Education / Brother Chops Off Brother’s Ear by DGreatMan(m): 4:15pm On Oct 09, 2010
The fight between two brothers, Olubukola Foresythe and Adetunji Wright has made the elder one to loose his ear to the younger one who allegedly bites off his ear during a scuffle.

P.M.NEWS gathered that the quarrel was over the sale of the property their late mother left for them at 1, Old Yaba Road, Adekunle, Yaba, Lagos, Nigeria.

It was learnt, Olubukola, the younger of the two brothers suggested that the building be sold for he intended to use the proceeds to start a new life.

His elder brother Adetunji disagreed. The argument degenerated into a scuffle during which Olubukola reportedly chopped off Adetunji’s ear. Neighbours came to his rescue as blood was gushing out of the wound.

The police from Adekunle police division later arrested Olubukola. After investigation, he was arraigned before the Igbosere Magistrate’s court, Lagos on a one-count charge of assault occasioning bodily harm.

The police said the offence is punishable under section 335 of the Criminal Code Cap 17, Vol.11 Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.

When the charge was read to him, Olubukola Foresythe pleaded not guilty.

The presiding magistrate admitted him to bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in the like sum.

The case has been adjourned till 15 November, 2010 for mention.
Education / 4 Brothers Of The Same Parents Sent To Kirikiri Prison by DGreatMan(m): 4:11pm On Oct 09, 2010
Four brothers of the same parents have been charged to Ejigbo Magistrate’s Court for allegedly raping two sisters of the same parents and infecting them with venereal disease.

The brothers, Peter Eboka, 30, Chuks Eboka, 28, Emeka Eboka 26 and 22-year-old Ejike Eboka were alleged to have raped the victims (names withheld) aged six and seven years. The are the daughters of their neighbour.

They knew that all of them were involved in the same act when the matter blew open. They were alleged to have had sex with the victims at various times and warned them not to tell anyone about it.

The incident happened at Olorunfemi area of Igando, Lagos, South-West Nigeria where both the defendants and the family of the victims reside.

The matter, however came to the open when the mother of the victims discovered that her daughters were no more walking properly and on checking their private parts, she discovered that they had wounds and bruises.

It was then that the mother asked them who had been assaulting them sexually. They told her it was the defendants that usually took them into their apartments and had sex with them.

According to their mother, Blessing (surname withheld) she went to report the matter at Igando Police Station and the police advised her to take the little girls to the Alimosho General Hospital at Igando for check up.

The checks conducted on them showed that they had contracted a sexually transmitted disease as a result of the rape.

The four brothers were arrested and charged to court on a four-count charge of defilement, unlawful carnal knowledge and threat to lives of the victims.

The offences, the police said, were contrary to Section 516, 218 and 86 of the Criminal Code Cap 17 Vol. 2 Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2003.

They pleaded not guilty to the charge. The Magistrate, Mrs. S. O. Solebo granted them bail in the sum of N200,000 with one responsible surety.

The court also ordered that the surety must deposit N225,000 into the Chief Registrar’s account each and must be gainfully employed.

The matter has been adjourned till 25 October, 2010 while the defendants were remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri, Apapa, pending when they meet their bail conditions.

Education / Ibb’s Billboards, Posters Destroyed by DGreatMan(m): 3:16pm On Oct 09, 2010
Residents of Ibadan, capital of Oyo State have continued to show their resentment against  the quest byformer military dictator, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, to contest the  2011 presidential election by defacing his campaign billboards and destroying his posters  in the city.

His billboards erected at the three highways that lead into Ibadan have been defaced.  There is one along Ibadan-Lagos expressway, another one very close to the tollgate along  Ibadan-Ife expressway and the third one very close to IITA along Ibadan-Oyo expressway.
The face of IBB on the billboards was marked with letter X in red ink.
Also, IBB posters pasted at strategic places in the city have been mutilated while some  were completely torn or removed.
Some residents who spoke to P.M.NEWS said if they had the opportunity, they would removed  all his billboards.
They said they decided to deface the billboards because that was the only thing they  could do now, adding that with time, they would either destroy or remove the billboards  completely.
One young man who identified himself as Mukaila condemned those that are campaigning for  IBB in the South West, stressing that it is only naughty person sons of Oduduwa that would  campaign for IBB among the Yoruba race.
Mukaila said: “Is it not insultive that IBB wants to contest 2011 presidential election  after destroying this country for us? What else does he want to do that he has not done?  After spending eight years in destroying the nation, he still wants to come back. That  will not happen and God will not allow it to happen.”
However, one of IBB’s media aides in Ibadan who spoke with P.M.NEWS under anonymity,  condemned the people that are defacing the billboards and destroying his posters.
He said that the act shows that they are intolerant.
According to him, IBB should be allowed to contest and if Nigerians don’t want him, they  will not vote for him and that will be the end of the matter,
Confirming the destruction of IBB’s campaign billboards and posters in parts of the  country, Kassim Afegbua, IBB’s spokesman, said it was an unwarranted provocation.
Speaking on a TV programme monitored in Lagos this morning, Afegbua said the campaign  posters were removed in Jos, the Plateau State capital ahead of President Goodluck  Jonathan’s visit to the state today.
He also said IBB’s billboards were being pulled down in Abuja, saying that such  intolerant and provocative act was uncalled for.
Education / National ASUU Begins Strike. by DGreatMan(m): 1:21pm On Oct 09, 2010
Varsity teachers begin strike on Monday
THURSDAY, 07 OCTOBER 2010 00:00 FROM LAWRENCE NJOKU, ENUGU NEWS - NATIONAL

IRKED by the alleged insensitivity of South East governors to the plight of lecturers in the zone, the national leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a nationwide strike from Monday, Oct 11. It affects all universities.

“That will be the first in a series of strong and telling actions which will follow shortly after, the National President of ASUU, Prof. Ukachukwu Awuzie, declared in Enugu yesterday at a press briefing.

“For the avoidance of doubt and as a measure of our commitment to the struggle for the emancipation of the South East state universities in particular, and for the proper implementation of the Federal Government and ASUU 2009 agreement and the better funding of Nigerian Universities in general, the Academic Staff Union of Universities had directed academic staff in all Nigerian Universities to proceed on strike from October 11.”

Flanked by other officials of the Union, Awuzie stated that the three-day (October 11 to13) strike was in sympathy and solidarity with their colleagues, the affected institutions as well as students of the state-owned universities.

Academic activities have been paralysed since July this year in all state-owned universities in the zone following the inability of the state governments to meet the terms of the renegotiated agreement reached between representatives of Federal Government and leadership of ASUU.

Although governors of the zone had met on two occasions to discuss the over three months old strike, nothing concrete had been achieved as the meetings ended with them asking the teachers to go back to the classrooms.

Awuzie who lamented the ugly development stated that the governors had ignored the demands as well as the welfare of the generality of the people of the zone, stressing that ASUU would not renege in her effort to ensure the full implementation of the agreement.

He said: “The governors of the South East states have basically ignored the demands; they have completely ignored the sad and dangerous fact that over two hundred and fifty thousand of their youths have been idle, roaming the streets and merging with the hundreds of thousand other unemployed in the regions; they have ignored the fact that it is their duty to ensure that such a crisis never occurs; they have ignored the dangerous crisis completely and with impunity.”

Awuzie, who painted a gory picture of the situation of the state-owned universities in the South East said the rot arising from the criminal underfunding of the institutions was unmatch anywhere in the world.

In Abia State University (ABSU), according to him, staffing is utterly dismal as a result of conscious government policy not to attract or retain the appropriate staff in number and quality, adding that for a student population of about 30, 000, the university has only 63 professors out of whom only 32 are permanent members of staff.

For a student population of 21, 000, Anambra State University can only boast of five professors, four readers, and 49 lecturers, while government subvention to the institution had remained abysmally low.

With a student population of 20, 000, Ebonyi State University has 61 professors most of whom are borrowed either as adjunct or contract staff. At Evan Enwerem University in Imo State with a student population of 30, 000, there are only 32 professors.

While lambasting the Enugu State government for dragging members of the ASUU in its university to the National Industrial Court over the lingering dispute, Awuzie said the union was no longer ready to tolerate the situation and would engage Governor Sullivan Chime’s administration in a showdown.

Awuzie added: “It’s obvious that the political class in the South East has collectively failed their people. They include the governors, legislators at the state and federal levels, ministers and other government political appointees because they have all refused to ask the governors to address the problem. The interest of the people is completely abandoned.”

“ASUU wishes to make it clear to the governors of the South East and their conniving political associates that the crisis in their universities is one responsibility that they can neither shirk nor wish away. The current strike will continue as long as they compel it to, even if it takes them five years to make up their mind to either run their universities or totally abolish them.

Education / You’re Hypocrites, Jonathan Slams Northern Elders by DGreatMan(m): 11:34am On Oct 09, 2010
Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, has declared that some Northern leaders, now claiming to love the North and its people, are just selfish individuals pursuing their own agenda.
President Goodluck Jonathan
The President, in his facebook message titled ‘In Defence Of Life, Liberty And Property’ , noted that when the North was recently plagued by series of human-made and natural disasters, Northern leaders who are now very vocal over the Abuja bomb blast remained silent and inactive.
Jonathan was reacting to the attacks on him by some Northern leaders after the bomb blast on 1 October.
The President reasoned that these Northern leaders specialise in playing one part of the country against the other and riding on sectional sentiments to promote their narrow ambitions.
“To prove to you that their interests are personal and not for the people they claim to represent, you will notice that while this administration has spent considerable time and resources as well as focused attention on the recent floods in Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi and Jigawa states and the cholera epidemic in certain parts of Nigeria as well as the lead poisoning that has consumed 400 children in Zamfara State, these so called concerned people have not been known to address any of these issues or offer a word of succour to the victims.
“This is irrefutable proof that their only focus is how to get power and not the wellbeing of the long suffering people of Nigeria whom I have sworn to Almighty God to protect.
“At this critical time, we should be mourning the dead and praying for the families left behind. What they need at this sad hour is not politics but compassion and empathy,” Jonathan said.
The president promised that the Federal Government will do everything possible to share in the pains of the bereaved and the injured.
“We will give the best medical care possible to the injured. We recognise that nothing can compensate for the loss of a loved one. But we offer our shoulders to the bereaved in this moment of need.”

Education / Man, 28 Defiles 6-year Old Girl by DGreatMan(m): 11:05am On Oct 09, 2010
There was a mild-drama at Igando Police Station in Alimosho Council of Lagos State when a 28-year old man, Wale Ipolola, escaped from the police station where he was detained over alleged involvement in a rape case.

Wale was arrested by the police for allegedly raping a 6-year old girl (names withheld) who was his neighbour’s daughter.

Instead of defending the charge against him at the police station, he attempted to escape. But he was unlucky as the policemen launched a manhunt for him and was re-arrested.

He was arraigned on a two-count charge of rape and escape from police custody at Ejigbo Magistrate’s Court.

Police claimed he took the little girl inside his room, laid her on the bed and had sex with her.

The incident happened at their residence, 28, Modina Road, Egan, on the outskirts of Lagos, South West Nigeria.

The alleged offence was blown open when the victim’s mother saw her as she entered the defendant’s room. She wanted to carry her but she discovered that fluid suspected to be sperm was coming out of her private part.

She raised an alarm and confronted the defendant. She later reported the incident at the police station.

The suspect was later arrested and charged to an Ejigbo magistrate’s court.

When the charge was read to him, he pleaded not guilty.

The presiding magistrate, Mrs. S. O. Solebo, granted him bail in the sum of N200,000 with two responsible sureties in the like sum.

The matter has been adjourned till 1 November for hearing.

Education / Abuja Bombings: S’south Elders Demand Apology From Northern Leaders by DGreatMan(m): 10:47am On Oct 09, 2010
The dust raised by the call on President Goodluck Jonathan to resign appears to be heightening as the South-South Elders and Leaders Forum cautioned the Northern Political Forum to desist from overheating the polity.

The SSELF, in a statement on Thursday, implored the United Nations, the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States to intervene and call the NPF to order.

The NPF, a group comprising prominent Northern leaders had on Tuesday said it had lost confidence in Jonathan’s ability to continue to lead the country.

The group’s call for the resignation of the President followed the October 1 bomb blasts in Abuja.

Jonathan on Wednesday fired back at his critics, saying it was “unfortunate that an unprecedented national tragedy has been politicised by people whose only interest is what they can get from the country and not what the country can get from them.”

The Senate and many members of the House of Representatives also took a swipe at the Northern leaders for their “unwarranted comment.”

In its reaction on Thursday, the SSELF, a group of elders and leaders in the South-South, demanded a retraction of the comments by the Northern leaders and an apology from them for slander.

“We wish to caution that if not urgently called to order, these isolated hawkish Northern leaders appear intent on replicating another Somalia or Rwanda incidents just because they believe only them have a right to decide who leads Nigeria,” the South-South elders said in the statement by their Secretary, Chief Ayakeme Whiskey.

They stated that the northern leaders were only trying to whip up sentiments within the military by insinuating that it was the recent changes in the nation‘s defence hierarchy that led to the October 1 bombings.

Incidentally on Thursday, the Chairperson of the AU Peace and Security Council, Dr. Monica Juma, called on the Federal Government to fish out and prosecute those behind the Abuja bombings.

Juma, who is also the Kenyan Ambassador to Ethiopia, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Addis Ababa, that bringing the culprits to book would serve as deterrent to others planning to execute such heinous acts.

“While we condemn the act in its totality, the AU Peace and Security Council wants the Nigerian government to thoroughly investigate the act, arrest and prosecute those behind the bombings, so that such unfortunate incident will not occur again in Nigeria and other parts of Africa,’’ Juma said.

In Jos, Plateau State, the Nigeria Renaissance Network, Goodluck Nigerians Movement and Christian Foundations for Social Justice and Equity, in separate statements said that the Northern leaders were misdirected when they asked the President to resign.

The statements were signed by Mr. Yakubu Dati for the NRN; Mr. Charles Sylvester for the Goodluck Nigerians Movement; and Mr. Joseph Sangosanya for the CFSJE.

But the Civil Rights Congress, disagreed, insisting that the President must resign

The CRC said that the Federal Government’s handling of the blasts only ridiculed the country and raised question on the competence and ability of the President to handle such commissioned tragedy.

The Federal Government may spend about N14 billion on Muslims who will attend this year’s pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, sources at the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), have said.
It was gathered that although 95, 000 Muslims in the country will take part in this year’s Hajj as the pilgrimage is known, the Federal Government will sponsor 26, 235 pilgrims.
Sources said that it will cost between N460, 000 and N540, 000 to sponsor each pilgrim for this year’s Hajj. The total amount to spend on 26, 235 pilgrims will be between N12 billion and N14 billion.
“The number of pilgrims for this year’s Hajj is 95,000 and the government will sponsor 26,235. The allocation of Hajj seat for the states and officials under Saudi Arabia Royal Embassy in Abuja for us this year is 95,000 and this includes the Medical team, the Security and the Welfare team. As I am talking to you now, the Saudi Arabia Embassy has issued about 15, 077 visas to some pilgrims and the issuance still continues,’’ the source said.

P.M.NEWS gathered that out of the total number allotted to the country, there are 10,000 special slots being given out to some wealthy citizens.
It was learnt that Niger State has the largest contingent of pilgrims for this year’s Hajj with 4,322 pilgrims. Lagos State follows with 3,896 pilgrims and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has 3,115.
The states with the smallest pilgrims are Ebonyi State, with just 8 pilgrims. Abia, Adamawa and Akwa-Ibom States have 50 pilgrims each.
