What else do you expect? At least 26 million of us are responsible for the nonsense thats going on in Nigeria. When they open eye vote for known elements that have not performed well in the past, don't expect anything different!

No need for insults. I believe Nigeria still has freedom of speech enshrined in our laws so they are free to speak their mind and we can speak ours. We should engage on an intellectual level and ask under which laws would Buhari ban the programming? Or is he an all powerful president that can do as he pleases? |

Be prepared to prove this to the VO's. Past performance predicts future behaviour! You say you are Nigerian and live/work in Ghana. I'm not sure of Ecowas protocol, but do you have the necessary papers to work in Ghana and reside there? I'm not saying this is you, but if you are willing to live/work illegally in Ghana, what are the chances you will do the same in the US? If I were you, I will make sure I have my residence or work permits with me at the embassy. 1 Like |

This thread is going nowhere fast, just the way I suspect it was designed to be. However, I will attempt to make bricks without straw and elevate the discourse. We all know what Nigeria is today. Nothing gained by continuously reharshing the problems. The big question is why does the situation continue to deteriorate despite efforts to make it better and what are some solutions to rectify? First, there are entrenched forces that are actively working to keep the status quo because they are benefiting from the way things are. Electricity supply is epileptic not only because the systems and processes are inefficient, but in addition there are forces actively sabotaging government efforts because billions are being made from the situation. Second, there is the born to rule mentality of a certain section of the country despite facts pointing to their inability to do anything to better the situation and even worse, they are actively shielding saboteurs in the system. I think 2 easy solutions can get Nigeria back on track. The biggest obstacle to getting competent leadership at the helm of the federal government is our democracy. We have foolishly adopted a majority vote wins democratic system. America figured out that this does not work and will always end up in majority tyranny. A pure democracy is akin to two wolves and a sheep voting to determine what's for dinner. You can easily predict what will always happen. Nigeria needs to adopt an electoral college system that makes sure that whoever wins needs to capture significant college votes from every state in the country as opposed to what happens now with two sections getting together to marginalize others. In addition to this, we really need a social safety net that guarantees food and a roof over the heads of the jobless, poor and destitute. This will reduce the pressure on citizens to get involved in crime and perhaps even spur entrepreneurship when failure does not mean almost certain destitution. One more thing though. Only in Nigeria can a Peter Obi be a running mate to an Atiku and Osinbajo to a Buhari. Why is the running mate light years more competent than the principal. Even worse, who the hell voted for these tickets when we also had these people on the ballot: Kingsley Moghalu, Omoyele Sowore, Oby Ezekwesili, Donald Duke, Fela Durotote etc? Don't tell me we all don't know that any of these people will do a much better job than those two tickets? I tire for y'all. We are our own problem [/right] |

123JohnF: Again, you put words in my mouth. I said absolutely nothing of the sort.. per bolded text! My message was simple and clear. You asked why Nigerian is the way it is. I said It is simply human nature. I said look back in history at countries that found themselves in similar situations and you will find that they were like Nigeria in many respects. I never presented any opinions on the virtues of what other countries did or what Nigerians are doing today. Hopefully, the vast majority of readers comprehend my opinion even if you don't or refuse to. |

123JohnF: Not even remotely close to what I said. My point is that Nigerias situation today is exactly what Europe experienced in the past when under the same prevailing conditions .... poverty, oppressive leadership etc. What did Europeans do to better their lot? They ventured out into the new world looking for freedom and economic opportunity and in the process founded new colonies (America and Australia) and plundered the resources in other existing countries. Does this sound similar to what Nigerians are doing today? Only difference is that there were no established immigration controls back when Europe did it. The key takeaway point I am making is that there is a potential for any country to turn into " a Nigeria" given the circumstances it faces today. Countries in Europe faced these difficulties and did the same. I am not making any excuses for what is happening in Nigeria, I am just saying it should not be a surprise to anyone. 2 Likes |

123JohnF: You speak like Europe has always been like you describe. I will refer you back to a time in history when Europeans were as poor, uneducated and desperate as majority of Nigerians are today. Things were even worse than they are in Nigeria as evidenced by the numerous occurrences of the plague and upheaval ("let them eat cake" and other difficult times for the monarchy) that ravaged the continent. Lack of hygiene, crime, prostitution and other vices were common just like in Nigeria today. The common denominator between both situations is poverty and lack of education. When a people are poor, hungry, imsecure and unhealthy, primal instincts take over and survival is the most important thing. Everything else becomes secondary and unimportant. I will encourage you to go read about Nigeria's history and culture and how some of these virtues which you ascribe to Europe were ingrained in the culture. Europe and America are wealthy today partly, and I would even argue to a large extent due to (a) Europe ravaging the resources of other continents of the world (b) Almost 300 years of free labor used in developing America. Having said that, there is something to be said about how both continents have managed the wealth and built modern sustainable societies. Nigeria on the other hand is mismanaging its resources and cannot survive the way things are going. Something must give! 3 Likes 1 Share |

fkj950ax: And yet another sad truth about the situation is thIs... correct me if I'm wrong but is there any government agency in Nigeria that even comes close to providing the level of customer service that the American Embassy provides to Nigerians in Nigeria? These folks provide much better customer service to Nigerians than our own government and in our own environment. Our immigration service could learn a thing or two about customer service from their operations and use to better the awful passport issuing operation! 6 Likes 1 Share |

123JohnF: There are ways around this. Your kids will go to school free if in the USA or Canada. In the US, you can qualify for free after school care for your kids. Subsidized care is available at the Y during the summer. It is not easy but its possible. You will struggle for a few years to get on your feet, but when you do it will be so worth it. And don't forget that you can attend online school and there are now lots of jobs you can do remotely from home. Or you can attend night school or work at night. Lots of people have done this and are doing this. Desperate times call for desperate measures. There is no success without sacrifice in the West! 2 Likes |

Even Bigger WOW. How much does the US govt give Nigeria in Foreign aid every year? Read and learn. https://explorer.usaid.gov/cd/NGA 2 Likes |

EMMAACHILE: If you do your research before you migrate and set yourself up to succeed, you will surely make it financially in the western world! Now make no mistake, financial achievement does not equal success and does not automatically bring happiness and personal fulfillment. We as a people need to learn contentment. My original post referred to making sure you have marketable skills before you move or planning to upgrade and make your skills recognized. Majority of immigrants I know that do this are successful. However, many get derailed because of greed/lack of contentment, pride, show offishness, dishonesty, baby mama syndrome etc 1 Like |

Ugosample: This is so true. Making a visit to Nigeria is like planning a covert military operation. You need to first of all keep it a secret and make sure the information is not widespread. Second, plan for someone to meet you at that disaster of an airport called MMA. You can't move around freely without security protection especially if you're going to your village. Many do not stay in their personal homes anymore and prefer to move from hotel to hotel for fear of being kidnapped or robbed. And the list goes on. Compare and contrast to visiting a Caribbean country not to talk of a Western country. An American/European citizen can buy a ticket tonight, book a hotel and car rental and leave for the destination tomorrow. No forward or advance military planning The worst thing about Nigeria is not that it is a failed country today. It is that there is no hope for the country to get any better in the future. In fact, all indications are that it will be worse in the future. This is why many citizens want to leave, including our youth who can see clearly that the suffering is likely to continue throughout their lifetime and even into their children's. 1 Like |

EMMAACHILE: The bolded is the biggest misconception of the century. Where are you getting this fallacy from? How do you describe very comfortable? Many professional Nigerian immigrants have two homes, one which they live in and a second vacation/investment home. They have gone beyond public schools which in themselves are very good, and send their children to private schools. They take several vacations a year, but not in Nigeria anymore. You do not see them in Nigeria because they do not feel safe there. They are very comfortable from their employment. I know from first hand information that your statement is not true. I personally know engineers, accountants, finance professionals, physicians, investment bankers etc who are doing very very well, even by western standards. Nigerians are arguably some of the most financially successful immigrants in the U.S. and Canada. Successful professional Nigerians do not boast or make noise about their wealth. They are quietly enjoying their lives in the western world. 2 Likes |

EMMAACHILE: Like Ugosample said above, what is this Nigerian obsession with getting rich? This mentality comes from the fact that only rich people have access to all the basics of life in Nigerian. In developed societies, you do not have to be rich to access good health care, emergency services, security, running water, constant electricity, good education, decent roads, transportation etc. These are all the commonwealth of these nations and accessible to its citizens because they all pay for these services in some form or the other and hold their govt accountable when these things are not provided. In Nigeria, we don't want to pay for anything so we get nothing. Even when we pay, some rouges in govt steal our commonwealth and use the stolen wealth to provide for their families alone while the rest of the citizenry suffer and struggle to provide for themselves in any way possible, including 419, online fraud, money rituals, kidnapping etc We Nigerians are natural born complainers, we complain about anything and everything. Did you ask the guys that were complaining if they lack any basic amenities? Ask them if their kids are in good schools? Ask them if they fear for their lives when they go out at night. Ask them if they can go to the hospital and get treated for any ailment? Ask them if security services harass them on the streets of Canada? Ask them if they can eat whatever they want whenever they want? Ask them if they have to buy generators and store petrol/diesel at home like some kind of hoarder? Ask them if they are worried about how they will survive in retirement? Ask them if mosquitoes dey disturb them for night? Ask them if they are worried about their vote being counted when they vote in elections? Ask them if they fear Fulani herdsmen attacks? Ask them if they can write to their elected representatives and get an actual response? Ask them why they are always looking good in pictures and posting pictures contradicting their complaining on facebook? Ask them why they haven't come back home if life in Canada is so bad? Finally, let me tell you for a fact that you are misinformed with your statement about only specialized jobs can prevent you living from paycheck to paycheck. Bus drivers, police officers, and many many more are living good with great salaries in the western world. I know of custodians/janitors who have done very well for them selves and can afford vacations to the Carribean every year. The choices you make determine how you end up! 4 Likes |

In my opinion, the best way to relocate to a foreign country is through a job offer when you are still in your own country. Nurses are the most prevalant beneficiaries of this method. The company offering you the job will take care of all the details and if you prove yourself, will even file PR for you after a few years. Second choice is by getting admission to a school to complete a degree program. This could ultimately lead to a job offer when you graduate and then PR through company sponsorship. Third choice is getting immedialte PR through a visa lottery, express entry or family ties. Notice that I have given a higher ranking to the possesion of a skilled job, or being on the path to getting one, than having the actual PR in hand. Many Nigerians have found this out the hard way by getting a PR through lottery or express entry then facing difficulties getting professional jobs when they relocate due to the fact that their qualifications are not recognized or they have no working expereince in the country. My advice to the OP is this. If you want to be truely successful when you relolcate, make sure you have immediately employable/marketable skills beforee you go. Or prepare to go back to school immediately to upgrade your qualifications so that you can break into the professional cardre as soon as possible. 1 Like 1 Share |
Travel / Re: Visa Denials For Nigerians Increased In 2018 - US Data Reveal by Dialectics: 10:15pm On Jun 20, 2019 |
Truth is that the visa approval process can be very subjective. Nigerians are being denied today for reasons that did not cause any concern a few years ago due to the current rate of overstays. Its amusing to read comments stating that America makes lots of money from visa applicants without them considering the cost of providing services. We all know how expensive it is to run any operation in Nigeria, especially one with a high concentration of foreigners needing extra amounts of security and above average standards of comfort. Besides that, Nigeria received more than r $700 million in foreign aid from the US government in 2018. 1 Like |

seyewest: I can attest to Western Union, have used it many times. You can send money online from your foreign bank acct or credit/debit card to a Nigerian bank account. If you use a credit/debit card, the money will be available almost instantaneously in the Nigerian acct. You will be charged a fee, ranging from $2.99 to $20 (if sending dollars), depending on how you pay and how the receiver receives. You can also request that the person goes to pick the money up at one of their partner locations in Nigeria, usually a bank. They will pay out in Naira only. Its convenient, but exchange rate is lower than market rate. Today's rate was 348 Naira to a dollar. There may be other entities that provide this service but I recommend you use the big players like WU since you will be providing banking/crad info. Alternatively, you can go to a location and pay cash. |
