Jay-Z has opened up about why he chose to return to the Grammys after previously boycotting the event.

During Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy gala on Saturday night (January 27), the rapper picked up the Grammy Salute to Industry Icons Award. Speaking at the legendary annual event, Jay discussed why he chose to boycott the ceremony earlier in his career.

Toyota plans to offer more than 10 purely electric vehicle models in its lineup by the early 2020s, marking the Japanese automaker's commitment to that growing technology sector.

Toyota Motor Corp. now offers no purely electric vehicles, although it leads in hybrid models, which switch between an electric motor and a gas engine.

Executive Vice President Shigeki Terashi said Monday that Toyota's EVs will be first offered in China, a nation that's encouraging electric vehicles with subsidies and other policies, and is expected to drive massive growth in that technology.

Terashi says Toyota's EVs will also later be offered in Japan, India, the U.S. and Europe.

The company says that by about 2025, every model it sells will have some kind of "electrified" version, such as hybrid, electric or fuel-cell.

Facebook plans to stop paying publishers and other content creators to produce live and on-demand videos, Digiday reports.

Under the current program, Facebook pays about 300 publishers, influencers, celebrities, and content creators given they produce a minimum number of minutes per month; live videos must be at least six minutes long, and on-demand videos at least 90 seconds long. Most of the deals Facebook has with publishers will expire by the end of the year or in early 2018.

The move to cut publisher funding for live and short on-demand videos points to Facebook's commitment to Watch. The company is now primarily focused on allocating bigger budgets to a fewer number of longer shows on Watch, according to Digiday.

This strategy could increase Facebook's chances of curating a library of "lean back," TV-like shows, ultimately shifting the way consumers view content on the platform. As a result, Facebook could ultimately better monetize mid-roll ads, which only play after 20 seconds of viewing. By establishing a viewer base that seeks TV-like content, Facebook could also become well positioned to attract US TV ad spend that's being shifted to digital platforms.

Grazing FB is ruining your life, admits social network after probing its army of addicts

Facebook has just publicaly slapped itself upside the head, admitting that its very existence is often detrimental to the wellbeing of its users.

An analysis today from Facebook's research director David Ginsberg and research scientist Moira Burke serves as a mea culpa of sorts from Zuck and Co about the emotional and mental toll the social network takes on its addicts.

"We don’t have all the answers, but given the prominent role social media now plays in many people’s lives, we want to help elevate the conversation," the duo write. "In the years ahead we’ll be doing more to dig into these questions, share our findings and improve our products."

In particular, they note studies that show simply reading Facebook actually makes people feel worse than those who do not consume at least 10 minutes of their FB feed every day. Another study noted that status updates gives negative social comparisons; by only seeing others (mostly) positive status updates we think our own lives are worse in comparison.

We're not overblowing this. This is literally what Facebook admitted today:

In general, when people spend a lot of time passively consuming information — reading but not interacting with people — they report feeling worse afterward. In one experiment, University of Michigan students randomly assigned to read Facebook for 10 minutes were in a worse mood at the end of the day than students assigned to post or talk to friends on Facebook.

Another finding from Zuck's department of the bleeding obvious:

Another theory is that the internet takes people away from social engagement in person.

Perhaps most damningly, a study cited by Facebook noted that heavy users, those who click more links and like more posts, reported worse mental health. In other words, Facebook is the fast-food burger chain of the internet. The cancer-stick maker of the web. The cyber-tobacco giant. A digital crack dealer. It is actively destructive to its most loyal followers.

And like many of those burger joints did after getting dragged through the mud in the early oughts, Facebook is trying to temper the bad press by offering users options to "limit" what they see on the site.

One of the features will be called Snooze and will serve as a way to temporarily hide a person. The button will put a 30-day mute on a person, hiding their posts from your news feed without having to permanently unfriend them. Another option, dubbed Take a Break helps users get over breakups (or at least limit the Facebook-induced misery) by hiding an ex's status updates from the user's profile, as well as the ability for the ex to see their posts.

Take a Break came about because Facebook realized its very website makes ending a relationship a nightmare for couples, as per its own confession:

Research on peoples’ experiences after breakups suggests that offline and online contact, including seeing an ex-partner’s activities, can make emotional recovery more difficult.

Finally, Facebook is making the time-honored publicity move of throwing donations at the problem, promising some pocket change – $1m – to research on the effects of social networking use in youth development.

Of course, the Silicon Valley giant isn't about to take all of the blame here. Carefully placed throughout the post were notes that, really, these problems are a user's own fault in the end.

"According to the research, it really comes down to how you use the technology. For example, on social media, you can passively scroll through posts, much like watching TV, or actively interact with friends — messaging and commenting on each other’s posts," Facebook offered. "Just like in person, interacting with people you care about can be beneficial, while simply watching others from the sidelines may make you feel worse."

Too late, Zuck.

Erik Huggers, CEO of music video site Vevo is leaving the company, effective immediately. CFO Alan Price will be interim CEO, the company said in a statement.

The statement was short on reasons, saying only that Huggers "has decided to step down to pursue new opportunities."

The backstory: Huggers had been pushing the company, which gets most of its revenue by distributing its videos on YouTube, into trying to become a destination in its own right. It will be interesting to see which direction Vevo goes from here.

Russian Transportation Minister Maxim Sokolov announced on Friday that flights between Cairo and Moscow will resume after they were halted in 2015.

Sokolov said he and Egyptian Minister of Civil Aviation Sherif Fathi signed a protocol on security cooperation that would allow direct flights between Moscow and Cairo to resume, starting from February.

Russia, however, is not yet talking about resuming charter flights to Egyptian resorts on the Red Sea, once a popular destination for Russian tourists, Sokolov said, adding that this would be "the next stage" of negotiations.

Later Friday, Egypt's civil aviation ministry said in a statement that the two sides will hold talks in April on the resumption of Russian flights to Egyptian resorts.

Moscow suspended flights to Egypt after the crash of a Russian airliner over Sinai in October 2015, killing all 224 people on board.

President Vladimir Putin on a visit to Cairo on Monday said the deal on the resumption of flights could be signed "in the nearest time."

This isn't the first time Uber has charged a customer an exorbitant amount for a seemingly quick ride.

Uber mistakenly charged a man in Toronto, Canada a whopping CA$18,518.50 ($14,415, £18,518) for a short 21-minute, five-mile ride. The outlandish cost of the trip was shared on Twitter after a user named Emily Kennard tweeted a screenshot of the ride's receipt.

"My friend was charged 18K for a 20 Min ride (!), and they are sticking to it. What in the world This is insane!" Kennard tweeted on Saturday (9 December).

The Uber receipt was first shared by an Instagram user with the handle "votethehish" who has a private account.
