Does anybody know or can anyone guess how many subscribers actively browse on the glo netwok ? MTN & Etisalat are the 2 companies that i know with active data subscribers especially MTN with the new mobile internet packages. Honestly, i have NEVER seen anybody that i personally know that uses glo to browse. Therefore, i am surprised to see where the customers are going to come out from when they start their ADSL services. Remember, its more expensive laying cables than over-the -air services. Therefore, the first packages coming out for the ADSL services might be expensive and beyond the reach of the average nigerian.

In another news, MTN BB service is now N3000 per month. This came about as a result of increased competition from Etisalat who has been offering reduced prices for their voice and data sevices & as a result winning over more subscribers.
3

As a matter of fact, MTN offers the best data services in the country. Occasionally i use glo only when having issues on the MTN link.
Glo doesn't seem to be serious with the average subscriber, but they have a large no of corporate clients on their fibre link, i should not be listing names but a i know of three banks on the their fibre links using it currently. Oil companies in the Niger Delta and others firms.

The BB service on the MTN platform is just a promo.

Then whats the point of making noise about it. Suffice to say, they would prefer corporate customers.

If they can get the infrastructure back in place, faster internet would be feasible in Naija else we'd stick to the same dial-up services they are currently selling.

Imagine, an ADSL router would serve more than 5 houses on the same street with good speeds.

Who says only Nitel can do it all, other telcos can also deploy ADSL or cable but now FTTH is the choice to beat
Glo is deploying FTTN and that's a good developement

the wimax technology being deployed by Mobitel does not qualify as 4G, although it potentially offers better speed than the HSPA currently used by MTN and glo.

As a matter of fact MTN and Glo have not achieved half of HSPA max downlinks, they can still tap further

Max downlink speed (bps) for the following technplogy is as follows

WCDMA(UMTS) 384k
HSPA (HSDPA/HSUPA) 14M
HSPA+ 28M
LTE 100M
LTE Advanced(IMT Advanced) 1G

For 802.16m 100M for mobile and 1G for fixed

Evil Brain:

You guys shouldn't be so hard on Mobitel. The 4g they're claiming is just normal marketing bullshiat and has more to do with the potential top speed of LTE than the actual download rate on their network.
We should be happy that another company is offering consumers more choice. With both MainOne and Glo-1 now active, there's far more bandwidth available but prices are still high. This shows that only more competition can bring the price down to sensible levels. You can bet that MTN and co won't pass any savings on to customers if they can help it. They'll happily charge 10k/month forever if they can.
The more companies there are competing for customers, the sooner one will have to lower prices and the better for us.

They are centuries away from the potencial top speed of LTE(IMT Advance) I Gbps is not a daydream

In another news, check this article out. I don't how true it is or the technical expertise of the company behind the network. Let's hope the competition keeps bringing down prices.

Ok, the article says 'Glo unveils submarine fiber cable' I didn't read anywhere in the article about commercial launch. Remember they said the cable landed and two years down the line, no show. A year ago they said the cable has been launched, one year later no show. Today the  cable has been unveiled. I hope it would be a year before it will be inaugurated, a year after lit, another year activated and a year after that,   grin

Glo 1 international submarine cable was inaugurated Thursday for commercial use.

well the highest for MTN on their HSDPA platform is 3.6Mbps and that speed is shared among all users connected to that cell at any given time t.

For real.I use glomobile for my internet and the connection is bleeping fast i mean.So why the hate?I got a very fast internet now and am very happy. They just need to work on the cost of internet in Nigeria.

I second you, many people make complains without actually testing out 4 themselves, glo is fast but the issue should be reduction in tarrifs. Infact for the past three days mtn has been down in town. i use both glo and mtn and where i am presently glo is faster.

The question is: Can you pay for such a plan?

Must internet plans be unaffordable?
aieromon:

I knew about these plans since last month.Unfortunately, the 106 code doesn't work for now and the dull CC Officers don't even know such plans exist. For now,i guess we're stuck with the 101,102 and 103 short codes.
As for the OP and Bolt thingy, you dead wrong!!

@flyuche

I am in Lagos, the guy I spoke to there said they bought capacity on main one but refused to tell me how much. The modem is the Huawei Echolife BM635. Like I said, they are testing the network so there are probably very few people using it.  Having said that, it is still very fast . I have no idea what to download now.

That's really an impressive speed. Next would be affordability. well u ve d opportunity of downloading d internet.

flyuche:

@jdoss. is swift on main? are you in lagos? what's the modem like? i am impressed. cool even in South Africa, we can not boost of this kind of speed.

Actually we're just kicking off, large cities is SA have far higher speeds for example cell c offers speeds of 7.2Mbps and 21.6Mbps on it mobile platform, u can imagine how d speed zaps. I hope MTN and Glo can move forward.

just to get back into the topic, i don't think the reduction in local calls has to do with Glo-1?

I think the international calls will benefit more from the connection of glo-1

Sure, international call ve always be on d low side, we need to work on our local rates.

On a recent developement, the broadband war is just kicking off with NCBC (Ghana), dropping the US$4,500 price tag at which it sells E1 to ISPs to US$2,100. That is more than a 50% reduction

Main One Cable, a new entrant to the international bandwidth market, sells the same capacity for US$1,050

Am so sorry but i don't have any links. I have a friend who works in their sales department. He activated my line for me. I think you dial *100*something# and send yes to confirm. I have been using it since yesterday. Its a newly launched promotion aimed at beating etisalat in the market. I dont even think they have updated their website yet. I promise however to post the instructions tomorrow morning by God's grace.

NB. Yes, am in Abuja now and i can confirm that glo has an EDGE network. They don improve from GPRS (abi na 2.5G dem dey call am). Where are all the people shouting about how improved glo 3G+ was ? Me, i never see 3G+ ooo! Am currently at Zone 6 behind Military Pensions Board. Abeg, prove this doubting thomas wrong.

No qualms i'll appreciate the instructions on getting on d plan.

Actually glo 3g is in Abj but i only know of wuse 2 where i was last month, it was really blasting on d 3g network, as said earlier maybe u should try other areas. 3g network is also in maitama

Why don"t you guys call it what it is. FBT. Technique. I have read this forum. Its like an inside joke among quite a few elites. Any novice can read this all day and not have a clue what is going on. MTN, GLO, ZAIN are all reaping everybody off! Not just a few. For every person have paid above 40$ a month for Unlimited bandwidth to these telcos, they deserve FBT knowledge.

I'll appreciate lectures man.

For Glo users in Warri you ll experience the power of 3G come Oct 1

Proxy, proxy proxies, some might be worse than our service providers.
Computers / Re: Globacom Submarine Cable - Glo-1 by Djcn: 6:21pm On Sep 14, 2010
I'm sick and tired of these monthly caps, In Japan ISPs beg subscribers to download and as such no single ISP in the country has a download limit, some only place an upload limit with the least upload being 150GB per month in that country. Net Value offers speed of 1 Gbps with no limits eitherway cost less than about $50.Comcast (US) offers 250GB for $24/month while Verizon gives no limit and costs $20/month

Glo should better make a difference with their fibre with at least 30GB/month for would be reasonable start otherwise their launch would make no real impact just like main one.

I also wonder what d Federal Govt and NCC is doing about all this, imagine i finished my Gig in just 3days that ought to be for 1 month.
Computers / Re: Globacom Submarine Cable - Glo-1 by Djcn: 11:58am On Sep 09, 2010
samir101ng:

Hi Guys,

i can now conclusively confirm that Etisalat DOESN'T HAVE AN UNLIMITED DATA PLAN.
1. Daily Plan N500 50MB
2. Night Time & Weekends N5000 3GB
3. Unlimited (yea right) N10000 3GB

So, please inform people about this.

Thanks for realizing this.

Actually Glo has the best offers for now giving 5GB for 10k while others offers 3GB
Users of glo 3g in Lagos and PH should experience an improvement as the test run is on on the glo1. For those in Benin u might not be able to connect for now due to fibre cuts around ore area.

It is true everyone is clamouring for the launch of glo 1 which has unforshunately been delayed until now. while main one is up and running, it seems not to exist because the impact is not been felt. The prices is still on the high side and the impact is yet to be felt.
Glo1 will actually change all of this.
@ samir, True in the north glo doesn't ve 3g services except 4 abj but the edge services is ok which i used through out my stay in the north west and north east.
MTN might be better but they surely have all it takes to give Nigeria a world class telcoms service, a ride with their service in SA will surely convince u that they are ripping us nigerians (and we pay higher).
And that's where glo come in, they serve to check and balance the excesses of MTN. Now did u recall how much MTN started selling Modems and what glo did to bring down d cost? Same applies to Sim cards, BB services and call rates, 3g and just name it.
True while glo may not be giving us the best of services, they surely are relevant in the market and we do hope there ll be a remarkable change come October

Hey Guys,

Etisalat is now the 1st GSM carrier to have an unlimited plan courtesy of Main One. Etisalat just launched a new plan called Easynet Time http://www.etisalat.com.ng/easynet.php. You can use it with your regular Etisalat prepaid SIM card or the Easynet data-only SIM card and Modem. Right now, i have subsrcibed to the N5000 Nighttime and Weekend Plan. I downloaded over 800MB on my first night. Etisalat is using an EDGE network but sometimes the speed rushes to 120 KB/S. I get an average of 29-35 KB/S using Internet Download Manager. Utorrent also works flawlessly with all ports opened. God bless Main One Cable Company as we are now reaping the rewards on the Etisalat Network.

There is data limits for the easynet time package. when u use up to 3gig u'll be cut off. I tried with the daily stuff and was cut off @ 50MB, i dont find their packages interesting. CDMA networks offer unlimited downloads, i dont know what's wrong with the GSM guys.

Its nice that all of this is coming up, it only shows that we're preparing ourselves for the fibre fever.
4llerbuntu:

^^^ well i did'nt want to get into an argument with the UP FIBRE CABLE brigade, but i dont know why you will tell me i have to ask for service first before you make it available to my area.

thats like saying i need to buy a phone and sim card before mtn decides to come install a mast in my vicinity. besides, if i am the only one who requires the service in my very large and remote area, are you telling me glo will then lay the cable all the way there just for me?

dude, lay the cables into the streets, when its there i can decide if i wanna join it or not!!!

You made a fine point but it doesn't always work that way. I think those doing networking should be able to explain better. Customers got responsibilities also whether they like it or not.

We've got what is called the CPE, the Demarcation point, the local loop and the central office, the service provider resposibility ends @ d demac.
That's all i'll say on that u can google further. As an analogy the water pipes don't run through every street, if it's not in urs u'll always ve to extend.

4llerbuntu:

funny thing is, all this hair pulling need not even occur sef. why cant we have small coys who will lay copper cable networks into particular vicinity and offer service based on the Big fibres? must it be the same coy who installed the transatlantic cable who has to do the domestic ones too? besides, if glo has cables into everywhere, in the event of cuts and all other stuff, can u imagine how slow response will be to rectify given naija factors?

there are business opportunities opening up, bottomline. the question is will the big players and the system let it flourish?

You're definitely right, main one was complaining of the cost of lay per km in Lagos, others can and should join in last mile connectivity, everything should not be left for main one and glo 1.
Computers / Re: Globacom Submarine Cable - Glo-1 by Djcn: 9:29am On Jul 22, 2010
flyuche:

can't glo buy bandwidth for it's 3G service tongue

i think its more about the technical and deployment issue, their edge is very stable, if u can recall zain gprs is poor in PH.

jdoss:

I wasn't trying to argue with you, I actually found it funny. I am just trying to find out the cost per MB to an ISP(for personal information, not because I represent some large company)

You can only get such bandwidth from resellers, it varies from one to another and depending on ur location.

4llerbuntu:

i can bet you, only PARTS OF LAGOS AND ABJ

That's not true, I am very sure of most of the Southern part of the country.  A Private firm is linking up in Warri right now.

flyuche:

are they doing that now? before we begin to enjoy this broadband speed? another 3year wait?

The truth of the matter is that the laying of fibre cables to home is not the sole resposibility of Globacom, Nigeria has no infrastructure in place, if u follow the broadband reports of news in the uk, Govt is taking it up as a serious challenge to give last mile connectivity to homes, i think the Govt and policy makers have a lot to play in this issue. (You can imagine LGC, State Govt and even street landlords demanding compensation because u wanna lay fibre)

goggs:

How can Glo just lay cables to houses without the owner first requesting for the service? I thought one had to request for the service first.

If you read this thread from the beginning you will know i am no Glo fan not to talk of being a staff! If i were one I would have been fired long ago.

In oversees u dont ve to request for the service first, its always up for grabs

I dont think we've got any glo staff here, everyone is just hoping for the best

If u reside in PH i can give u contact address.

For enterprises
We are selling capacity at a minimum of STM-1 either on 5 year lease or on an IRU basis.
Co-location can also be provided.
We deliver a minimum of STM 1 (155Mbps)
IP grooming charges are applicable if required.

If interested
u'll ve 2 state ur location
Terminal equiptments
