Glo 1 is already up for grabs. The truth is that only big enterprises might be able to purchase the bandwidth except you go through resellers. Pls you can confirm yourself. For those interested in bandwidth purchases just call 08032031645 or 08032608970 and discuss with the guy.

@Djcn. glo 1 is being tested? i will believe them when their crappy 3G service improves.

I was actually in glo office to make complains about their 3g service. They acknowledge the fact and said they're currently working on it tho no immediate results.
The truth is that main one is yet to start offering their bandwidth as i went to their office to discuss purchases. I strongly believe that glo will come out strong, as there is always a threshold period.

Mohamed Jameel, the Chief Operating Officer of Globacom told journalists last week after a meeting of operators and the Nigerian Communications Commission that Glo-1 had just finished undergoing some testing work.

"The Glo-1 submarine cable has been undergoing some testing work, which we just concluded. We would be due to begin operations in four weeks time or before the end of August 2010," Mr. Jameel said.

At the end of the day, what you guys fail to realise is that specs matter little - it's the ultimate user experience that wins overall.

if a poll indicates HTc desire has a better user experience, will u invariably say that the htc is the better phone.

As a matter of fact, specs in conjuction with user experience is what is most important. Apple made a breakthrough in d mobile phone industry with the release of the (legendary) iphone in june 07 but since then they've not recorded that success in their other products.
Other companies have improved and even outclassed them in some of the features.

june 07 iphone , july 08 3g, june 09 3gs, june 10 4g

texazzepete:

Please mention any other phone in the world that has similar 'features and functions'.

You should be in a better position to list features and functions cos all that i know are already existing features n functions.

since the announcements of the 4g Tech enthusaists around the world dont find anything truly unique or overwhelming.

pros
Design (u cant beat it)
Good battery life
Apps (bonus)

The phone is overprised (we're in iworld )
No Flash (85% of the top 100 websites uses flash)
Charges for satnav (too poor)
Facetime (doesn't makes sense, the world ve past that)

texazz:

Multitask/background apps is easily enabled through several jailbreak solutions.
And in before any snarky comments from Android users about not having to jailbreak, we'd have to agree that any serious Andoid fan really has to root his device. And iPhone jailbreaks are far easier these days than rooting Android phones.

Must we always jailbreak for for what is obtainable worldwide Does that makes sense cant we be free

If we're to go by polls
A recent poll in the US indicates that iphones fans are more inclined to get and stick with the android. (where're dollars heading to)

True developers are more in love with iphone but surveys by Appcelerator favours the android as the most favored platform for the future. (dollars will definitely shift)

Konjour:

1,000 Naira for 100mb? undecided I get 1 Gigabyte for 98 Rupees on my Blackberry(with Airtel)which is valid for 30 days, that equates to just about 450 naira, upload speed is about 30kbps.and the download speed which is supposed to be 3.1Mbps,is actually 45kbps. Also heard that there are plans to move Airtel's networks to Nigeria, prolly before the end of this year. Nigerians 'd definitely prefer their data plans to any of the ones currently operating in Naija now. Superb service delivery.

Their coming would not change anything. In US the two major carriers are AT&T and VZW and they compete favourably with afordable prises, but here we've got MTN, Zain Glo n Etisalat n a nos of CDMAs and they're all beating around the bush.
Computers / Re: Globacom Submarine Cable - Glo-1 by Djcn: 1:54pm On Jun 04, 2010
@jodoss I an not against ur statement or post, u got a first hand info which can be true. Well, what you've said makes much sense, in Nigeria the best data services is always limited to Lagos, Abuja n PH, that can reduce d costs of deployment. Well, it's not their fault, that's where the money is.

As the GSMA states "More than 50 mobile operators have already committed to LTE plans, trials or deployments that will take this speed well beyond 100 megabits."

Zain can actually rollout the plans in some selected cities, but again rolling out doesn't automatically translate to faster speed. Now come to think about this, if 10,000 persons in Lag have access to a speed of 100mbps, then where is the backbone? If there's no solid backbone support for that amount of data then ur speed would not be better than mine who's on a 3.6mbps.

I know the telcomms industry would naturally want to progress with other network operators around the world, but it would be much better if they tackle basic problems we still face in Nigeria.
Phones / Re: Etisalat's New Data Plan (For Browsing) by Djcn: 1:06pm On Jun 04, 2010
You guys are talking about Gigabytes limitation. This is very necessary for the Nigerian Telecomms Industry unless none of us can surf right now.
It costs so much to put in place infrastructure for 3g networks and that's why the network operators are slowly rolling out the services to other parts of the country. The operators are as a matter of fact yet to make profits on their 3g deployments in the country, but with the increase in data services patronage, that will soon change.
We just need to be patient, as things will get better.
Computers / Re: Globacom Submarine Cable - Glo-1 by Djcn: 12:59pm On Jun 04, 2010
It costs Millions of dollars to upgrade to to a 3g network and that is why the network operators are slowly rolling out the services and they're yet to make profits with regard to their 3g investment in the country, but i think that will soon change.

As for the deployment of LTE (ITU-R), it will cost America's AT&T about 10 billion dollars to upgrade their infrastructure to 4g and that will take 3-5 years. In Nigeria, we should expect the Nigerian telecomms to fully deploy their 3g services and improve the quality of their service.

Many will use it as a means for video entertainment. Free Netflix streaming, CBS and ABC video. Cheap TV shows. The works!

I would just advise u to leave the linux as it is, dont let the word linux scare you the one that comes preloaded on your machine has been made to be very easy to you so you wont have any problem, xp doesnt run well on netbooks, by the time you have your anti-virus it would just become very very slow to make any sense, also to be able to install XP u would have to get an external cd-rom, plus start looking for drivers that would work, after which u would end up with a system that is very slow to bootup, applications would be slow to start etc, when i got my compaq mini 700 netbook it came preloaded with xp, the performance was soo bad that i had to install linux, which has been slimmed down to run on netbooks i never when back. again linux is not that hard to use, incase you have any problem or question about it please let me know i would be glad to help . cheers.

Could that be really so, linux netbooks have drastically fell in market sales, cos more persons have been less satisfied with these stuffs, while windows experience a 10% INCREASE.

Windows-based netbooks grew to 96% of the market as of February, up from under 10% during the first half of 2008. Microsoft's gains were cut from the market share of Linux-based netbooks, a fact Microsoft attributes to consumers wanting a netbook that runs like their home PCs.

Computers / Re: Amd Or Intel? by Djcn: 7:07am On Feb 21, 2009
@Mac T, are u interested in buying branded systems to meet your need or u're only interested in the processor type? the truth is that there's always a system to meet your every need and even the most powerful games shiver on the Dell XPS 730X but if you are only interested on processor then go for the intel core i7 or AMD phenon to mee your needs,
don't forget, in PCs, not only the processing power counts.

@dual core, Comparable AMD processors, heats less than Intel Processors and that is due to a technology employed by intel known as deeper pipeliling to achieve faster process. Many at times, it's better, when you specify than generalize, i've been employing an AMD processor along with an Intel Processor, so apart from theories, i can actually see practically what's happening.

@nateevs, thx for the articulate answers. Actually, i had the LAN in mind, and that would most often lead us to EIGRP and OSPF.
With EIGRP, as u've said u'll have to think the cisco way as this protocol is limited to cisco routers, OSPF provides an open standard.
The Cisco syllabus deals more with EIGRP and so cisco people are more farmiliar with that standard, not knowing much functionality of the OSPF, especially when using different routers from multiple vendors. I had wanted to know the limitations of both and to some extent, u dealth with that.

@moonguy, I quite know of NEC, an Electronics firm, i think they make Japan's top 100 after some consolidation stuffs, i was only wondering, why they will be implementing such a bandwidth on their LAN or they are only thinking of creating such stuff as a backbone for the internet.
If all their staff were to be streaming a HD DVD content at the same time, they will stiff be using an infinitesimal of the network bandwidth when operating on zetrabyte.

@st, good to know that tokyo still leads to a large extent in broadband for home users, just wanted to confirm what a friend passed across. I'm hoping the UK and US will gear up the wheels. You can stop with non-disclosure thing cos i gat no work for you if you are fired.
On, the project stuff let me ascertain the reality and functionality, and once that is done, i'll do well to make the necessary contacts.
