Politics / Presidency Jittery Over Obasanjo’s Stance On Lamido by dkolu(m): 1:29pm On May 31, 2013
The joy of the Presidency over the success of the mid-term assessment was cut short with former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s endorsement of Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, one of the speculated presidential aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at that state’s economic submit on Wednesday. Obasanjo who boycotted the Democracy Day activities reportedly presented Lamido as a preferred option to President Goodluck.

According to an informed Presidency source, while Obasanjo was speaking in Jigawa, he was monitored by two presidential aides who reportedly briefed President Jonathan. The brief was said to have angered Jonathan who was said to have summoned the chairman, Board of Trustees, PDP, Chief Tony Anenih, the chairman of the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, his chief of staff, Mike Ogiadomen and a few others where they deliberated on the arsenal coming from Obasanjo camp.

“The meeting was held on the Red Carpet and President Jonathan could not hide his disappointment in former President Obasanjo. He was said to have asked what does this man want again? But after a while, both Tukur and Anenih calmed him down and Anenih volunteered to intervene in the matter by meeting Obasanjo in Ota before the week runs out,” the source disclosed. - http://leadership.ng/news/310513/presidency-jittery-over-obasanjo-s-stance-lamido

Politics / Attainment Of Vision 20:2020 A Mirage, Says NESG by dkolu(m): 2:07pm On Dec 04, 2012
THE Federal Government may have been serenading in the dreamland if it believes that the country will realise its goal of becoming one of the largest 20 economies in the world by year 2020. This blunt assessment came Monday from the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) in Abuja, at the opening of this year’s summit of the economic experts. The Director-General of NESG, Frank Nweke Jnr, said rather the 20th slot on the economic development chart would go to Saudi Arabia.

Nweke made the observation while presenting the 2012 Nigerian Economic Scorecard at the three-day 18th NESG, with the theme:, “Deregulation, Cost of Governance and Nigeria’s Economic Prospects.’’ The Vision 20:2020 is aimed at making Nigeria one of the top 20 economies by year 2020.

“Based on our projections, using the IMF World Economic Outlook database, our findings are that “Saudi Arabia will be the 20th largest economy in the world by 2020, with a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of $1.2 trillion in Purchasing Power Parity (PPP).” “Nigeria, on the other hand would be the 27th largest economy in the world by 2020, with a GDP of US$864 billion in PPP; falling short of being the 20th largest economy by a GDP of US$316 billion,’’ NESG boss said. - http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=106569:attainment-of-vision-202020-a-mirage-says-nesg&catid=31:business&Itemid=562

Politics / Nigeria To Join Top 10 Economies In 2050 by dkolu(m): 2:51pm On Nov 16, 2012
With an estimate of 500 million people, making her the fifth most populous country by 2050, Nigeria will become one of the 10 largest economies by that year, according the Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Mahesh Sachdev,

Sachdev affirmed that Nigeria could actually meet the target of being among the 20 leading economies by 2020. He said by 2050, his country would have become the most populous, overtaking China, and the second or third largest economy in the world.

Sachdev, who spoke at the 10th award ceremony for winners of the National Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC)-organised annual secondary school competition for members of the NAFDAC Consumer Safety Club in Abuja yesterday, said India buys N7 billion worth of goods from Nigeria daily, amounting to N689 billion a quarter. He disclosed that India’s investment in Nigeria in 2010 was $5 billion, with more medicines coming from India into the country than any other nation. - http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/nigeria-to-join-top-10-economies-in-2050-says-envoy/130798/
Politics / Govt Raises Panels On Ribadu Report, Others by dkolu(m): 1:32pm On Nov 16, 2012
The Petroleum Revenue Special Task Force’s report may not be dead after all. The government yesterday gave a ray of hope that in spite of the controversy that greeted the report, it might still see the light of the day. President Goodluck Jonathan raised three committee to prepare draft White Papers on the report of the Mallam Nuhu Ribadu Committee and two others on the oil industry. The committees are to work for two weeks.

A statement by presidential spokesman Dr. Reuben Abati, said: “In furtherance of his declared commitment to doing all within his powers to ensure greater accountability, probity and transparency in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan today (yesterday) established three committees to prepare draft White Papers on the reports of the Petroleum Revenue Special Task Force, the National Refineries Special Task Force and the Governance and Controls Special Task Force. “The Committees are to study the reports, review the issues raised, and prepare draft White Papers for the consideration of the Federal Executive Council within two weeks. - http://thenationonlineng.net/new/news/govt-raises-panels-on-ribadu-report-others/

Jobs/Vacancies / ‘60% Of Nigerian Graduates Are Unemployed’ by dkolu(m): 2:57pm On Nov 15, 2012
Director General of the National Centre for Technological Management, Dr. Willie Siyanbola, has disclosed that unless both government and private sectors generate over 2.5 million jobs yearly, about 60 per cent of Nigerian graduates will remain unemployed.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ sensitisation workshop on ‘Entrepreneurial Attitudinal Status’ in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Siyanbola said about five million Nigerians are either not productively engaged or unemployed; a situation which he said was sad.

Commending the Federal Government and some state governments’ intervention programmes to reduce unemployment rate in the country, the DG stated that the effects of the programme would take some time to be noticed. According to him, the issue of job creation should not be left in the hand of the government alone; stressing that job creation was a business for all. - http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/-60-of-nigerian-graduates-are-unemployed-/130658/
Politics / Obasanjo Slams Jonathan’s Response To Boko Haram by dkolu(m): 3:27pm On Nov 14, 2012
It was meant to be a lecture in honour of a distinguished pastor celebrating his 40th anniversary on the pulpit. But the forum turned out to be more; it became a podium for a blistering criticism of the Jonathan administration. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo lashed out at the Dr. Goodluck Jonathan administration for what he called its slow handling of the Boko Haram insurgency. He also accused the administration and that of his successor, the late President Umar Musa Yar’Adua, of being soft on corruption.

Obasanjo, who was instrumental to the enthronement of the late Yar’Adua and Jonathan, said the sect’s activities would have been nipped in the bud had drastic steps been taken at the initial stage of Boko Haram’s insurgency – as he did in 1999 when he deployed troops in Odi community, Bayelsa State. The former president accused his successors of allowing the Boko Haram scourge to become a national security problem.

He said: “My fear is that when you have a sore and you don’t attend to it early enough, it festers and becomes very bad. Don’t leave a problem that can be bad unattended.” Reflecting on the crisis at Odi, Obasanjo said: “I attended to a problem that I saw; I sent soldiers. They were killed, 19 of them (were) decapitated. If I had allowed that to continue, I would not have the authority to send security anywhere again. I attended to it. “If you say you do not want a strong leader, who can have all the characteristics of a leader, including the fear of God, then, you have a weak leader and the rest of the problem is yours,” he added.

In his reaction to comments on rising corruption by public office holders in Akinyemi’s paper, Obasanjo blamed the weakened anti-corruption fight on his successor. “At one time, they said the fear of (Mallam Nuhu) Ribadu, former Chairman of the Economic and Economic Crimes Commission (EFCC), is the beginning of wisdom. Then, what happened to Ribadu? And there was no longer any wisdom,” he added. - http://thenationonlineng.net/new/news/obasanjo-slams-jonathans-response-to-boko-haram-2/
Career / China Warns Citizens In Nigeria Against Maltreating Employees by dkolu(m): 3:09pm On Nov 12, 2012
The government of the Peoples Republic of China has warned its citizens living and doing business in Nigeria and other parts of Africa against ill-behaviour towards their employees, saying it will not condone any act capable of tarnishing China’s image and simultaneously hampering the good relations between the two countries.

Speaking during a session with African jourmalists who are currently on a visit to China, Director General of Information in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Lu Shaye, said the government was aware of the misdemeanours of some of its citizens towards their employees in Nigeria and other parts of Africa, insisting that “we oppose such actions.”

Shaye who was responding to questions by the delegation about the ill-behaviour of Chinese employees towards their employers in the country, explained that the government was currently devising ways of correcting such anomalies, adding that the government had warned its citizens in all parts of Africa to treat peoples of their host countries with respect, obey their rules and regulations and as well live in harmony with them.

According to Shaye who distanced China and the government from “such acts, such attitudes are totally isolated and doesn’t represent China’s attitude,” as he appealed to the African media to assist the government of China in exposing any negative acts of Chinese residents in their countries, emphasising that the media should report such acts in a way that the relations between Africa and the country will not be hampered. - http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/china-warns-citizens-in-nigeria-against-maltreating-employees/130377/
Politics / FG Targets 75 % Electrification Across Nigeria by dkolu(m): 2:48pm On Oct 23, 2012
The Federal Government has said that it plans to bring sustainable electricity supply to about 75 percent of Nigeria’s total population within the next 13 years when the country’s power generation would have averaged 40,000 megawatts (MW).

Minister of State for Power, Mr. Darius Ishaku disclosed at a regional dialogue on the use of renewable energy technologies to improve agricultural activities organised by the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) in conjunction with the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties in Abuja that the ambitious plan will see a swift increase in the percentage of people with electricity in the country.

Recall that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) had in a survey it conducted in 2011 on the percentage of Nigeria’s population with access to electricity stated that about 35 percent of Nigerians are properly metered and captured as legitimate consumers of electricity supplied from the national grid. - http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/fg-targets-75-electrification-across-nigeria/128452/

Education / Re: University Of Ibadan 2012/2013 Admission Continua by dkolu(m): 4:12pm On Sep 05, 2012
quite an interesting thread you got here, i just feel i should say one or two things and clarify some things about ui admission especially on "change of course". one thing you need to know when changing your course is that you are not guaranteed automatic admission just because your score is above the cut-off used during the merit list admission. as a matter of fact the cut-off point used during the merit list admission becomes irrelevant due to the fact that there is limited space and many people are jostling for this limited space. hence, depending on the number of applicant and the number of spaces available the cut off point might go up or come down(but i can tell u its very rare for the cut off point to come down).apart from the limited spaces, there is also the consideration of staff children (ui staff, children are given some concessions in the admission process during change of course ). finally you have the "man know man" aspect but this is very rare and the person must be a top official probably a prof. or HOD of the dept. in essence what i am saying is that because you have a higher score than the previous cut-off point used in the merit list does not mean you will be admitted into that dept/course. but rather a new cut-off mark will be determined based on the new applicant and the available space. its this new cut off mark that will be used to determine who will be admitted. wish all of you the best in your studies
Politics / NSA Predicts Violence In 2015 Elections by dkolu(m): 3:25pm On Aug 30, 2012
National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, on Wednesday warned that there could be violence in the country during the 2015 general elections. According to him, this is based on the volatile situation in the country. The NSA however said the violence would come “with a different angle”, calling on security agencies to avoid post-election violence in the country.

Dasuki said this at the opening of a two-day workshop with the theme ‘Security Challenges of Election Management: Matters Arising from 2011 and Participating in 2015’, organised by the Independent National Electoral Commission and the Friedrich-Ebert Stiftung Foundation.

The retired army Colonel said, “The competition among politicians may be more intense in 2015; so more tension should be expected. Nigeria can get anything right when there is the determination and political will on the part of critical stakeholders to achieve success. No two elections are the same; 2015 is likely to bring new challenges. “There could be possible violence but with a different angle to it, not only post-election but before and during, because of the prevailing security situation, unless the security situations get better before then. “There are likely to be challenges, however well- prepared a country may be, especially in the provision of election security. The unexpected could happen; a good example was the post-election violence, (in 2011), which was not expected, especially in context and magnitude. - http://www.punchng.com/news/nsa-predicts-violence-in-2015-elections/

The Rejected Missionary

MYSTERY BABYLON DENOMINATION

FOREIGN MISSIONS BOARD

Rev. Saul Paul

First Christian Church

Antioch, Syria

Dear Mr. Paul:

I have your application for missionary appointment before me, and will be as frank as possible concerning your qualifications as a foreign missionary. We have to be very careful in choosing our missionaries, and our Missions Board has reviewed your case thoroughly. We have decided that it would be unwise to send you to the foreign field for the following reasons:

1. It has come to our attention that you are doing secular work on the side. We do not feel that making tents and full time ministry go together very well. It seems that you do not have enough experience in trusting the Lord for your income. You should make up your mind whether you want to preach or continue your profession.

2. Your previous actions have been very rash and unseemly for a minister. We learned that in a public meeting you opposed Dr. Simon Peter, an esteemed minister with a high reputation. We also hear that you argued so violently with some of our ministers that a special council meeting had to be called at Jerusalem to prevent a serious split in the churches. We frown on such radicalism. For your own good, I am enclosing a copy of Daius’ Carnegus book on “How to Win Jews and Influence Greeks. ”

3. We understand that you do not agree with all the points in our constitution and by-laws, and do not even believe in all our doctrines. In checking back, we discovered your Christian education consisted of a three year course in Arabia. We find that the Arabian school has not been approved by our accreditation board and we hear that there are some strange unknown doctrines being taught in that school. We also hear a rumor that; you are a snake handler. Such a reputation could only hurt the true cause of Christ and the Church. We don’t have all the details on that episode at Melita, but we understand you claimed immunity to harm from snake bite through a promise of Christ. It has come to the attention also that you preach much about “the Power of God “, and “the gifts of the Spirit”. Also that you speak in tongues a great deal. Surely you realize that such as this only drives off the better class of people, and attracts only the riff-raff. It would be better to tone down those more sensational forms of worship. You sound as though you are “off the deep end”, and it has been proven to our satisfaction that you had hands laid on you at Antioch with prophecy going forth, with none of the Apostles or Headquarters brethren present to conduct this ordination services in the prescribed manner. You must remember that prophecy is a dangerous thing unless handled properly, and we fear that you are associated with that “so called New order of the Early Rain”. Stay away from that brand, it could ruin your ministry.

4. We see here that you have a jail record in several places. If this is true, it puts you in a bad light, for our denomination has always stood for a high standard of holiness, and I fear it would damage our reputation to have someone representing us that had served time in jails and prisons. Frankly, Mr. Paul, we seriously doubt you could have been innocent and the judge wrong in so many cases. It just doesn’t look right.

5. It seems that you are a trouble maker Mr. Paul. Several business men of Ephesus have written us that you were the cause of severe loss of business to them and even stirred mob violence. You must learn to cultivate the friendship and influence of men such as these. We also have some details of a lurid”over the wall in a basket” episode at Damascus, plus a stoning at Lystra, and several other violent actions taken against your ministry. Haven’t you ever suspected that concilliatory behavior and gentler words might gain you more friends? We have never condoned such sensationalism in the ministry. This is just not the type of ministers that we send out. We have learned through channels that following some trouble with a preacher on the island of Cyprus, you had to change your name. This does not seem to us to be conduct becoming to the ministry.

6. You admitted in your application that in the past you neglected such needy fields as Bithynia, just because “the Spirit didn’t lead that way”, and that you undertook a hazardous journey on the strength of a dream you had at Troas. Mr. Paul, surely you don’t expect us to go along with such flimsy and fantastic excuses for your seemingly purposeless wanderings. Many times you did not stay long enough, in our opinion, to get a church established. You left your converts many times without even a pastor to guide them, and without setting the church in order in some good fundamental denomination. We hear also from Troas that you preach too long, one sermon lasting almost twenty-four hours, even to the extent that a young man fell asleep and was seriously injured. We Understand that you claim to have restored his life and raised him from the dead by falling on him and embracing him. What nonsense! If the man was injured, you should have called in a competent physician and had a rigid physical examination made. And instruct the church to carry sufficient liability insurance to take care of a situation like that. We need practical men in the ministry, Mr. Paul, not high strung emotional radicals. our advice is for you to shorten your sermons considerably. We find that about twenty minutes is the longest a minister can hold the attention of his audience these days. our motto is “Stand up, speak up, and shut up”.

7. We understand from your own home church that you could not get along with your fellowministers, that John Mark, a commendable young man and nephew of one of our leading ministers, had to leave your party in the middle of a journey, and that you had a violent quarrel with gentle, good natured Barnabas. Now these men are well thought of in Jerusalem, and we wonder why you are always having trouble with your fellow workers ? We have notarized affidavits from three fine brethren, Diotrephes, Demas, and Alexander, to the effect that it is impossible for them to co-operate with either you or your program. From what we hear, you seem to have a self-exalted spirit, boasting about your revelations and that God has chosen you to reveal some “new Mystery”. Can’t you realize that any new truth that is to be revealed would come through Headquarters to the recognized, more mature brethren, and that after it had been checked by our Procedure and Doctrine Committee that we would pass it on to the ministry? On top of all that, we hear that you are claiming to be an Apostle. We know nothing of this being passed upon by the proper authoritative channels, and wonder how you could back that claim up, when the last Apostle was voted into office right here in Jerusalem. That is a dangerous doctrine Mr. Paul, and I advise you to forget it.

As you see, Mr. Paul, we feel definitely after close scrutiny of your case, that you are undoubtedly the most unqualified applicant we have ever seen, and my advice for you is to find a church where you can work in harmony, and use your past education as perhaps a Sunday School teacher. I hope I have prevented you from making a terrible mistake in your life.

Most sincerely yours,

J. Flavios Fluffyhead

Jokes Etc / Upper Management Strategy by dkolu(m): 5:09pm On Jul 23, 2012
A metal fabricating company had just hired a new CEO who wanted to bring the companty into even greater productivity. He decied to visit the manufacturing floor and encourage the employees and use whatever influence he could to eleiminate laziness and spur hard work.

He walked unto the work floor and the people that saw him busied themselves trying to impress their new leader. He looked around impressed by the people's work ethic. Over by the lunchroom a young man exited the bathroom and lazily leaned up against the wall without any attempt to go back to work. It was two minutes before lunch and he seemed content to do nothing until the lunch whistle blew. The CEO decided it was time to make an example of him to the rest of the employees. He approached the man and asked him "Son, how much money do you make working each week?" The man said "About $400.00 a week", and still leaned against the wall lazily. The CEO quite flustered at the man's unwillngness to get back to work, whipped his wallet out and handed the man $1600 dollars and said, "Here's a months pay. Take it and get out of here!" The man seeing the anger on the CEO's face quickly took the cash and left.

The lunchtime whistle went off and the CEO asked a group of men who were heading into the lunchroom "What exactly was the job that lazy man did in this place?" One man answered, "He was the pizza delivery man waiting to get paid for delivering someones lunch."

i graduated from the university with a 2.1 grade i am also a chartered accountant (qualified during my school days though not inducted yet) although i went to school very late hence i graduated at the age of 32.this age thing has really an issue in getting any entry level position especially in audit firms where i would have loved to start my career as an accountant. however i was able to get an offer in a very small audit firm with a 35k/month take home pay i have been with this firm for the past 6month. but the problem with this firm are two fold
1, the firm does not train you in any way all they do is just to throw you into the midst of assignment with little or nothing on how you are to do the job. this is really frustrating as i had the intention of learning the ropes from the firm. to make matter worse we only have two staff(myself and my colleague who is also a young chap like myself). this has really discouraged me due to the fact that you have to be using your initiative to get things done. to top it up the managing partner of the firm is not ready to help you and he would criticize you if you cant get a job done
2 salary is very irregullar, most times salary is paid on the 21 of the next month there was even a month we collected salary on the 2nd of the third month. to make matter worst you have to pay your transport to clients office no matter where it is.
these and many more are the challenges i am facing where presently hence i am considering if i should resign or what do you think. i need advice
