Politics / No Restriction Of Movement For Saturday’s Local Council Elections In Edo, Says O by DollarUp: 5:18pm On Aug 31, 2023
No restriction of movement for Saturday’s local council elections in Edo, says Obaseki

...tasks on peaceful conduct, massive turnout

…CP Dankwara assures of security, safety

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said there will not be a restriction of movement for Edo State Local Government Area (LGA) elections scheduled for Saturday, September 2, 2023, assuring commuters transiting through the state of safe passage.

Obaseki disclosed this while briefing journalists after the State Security Council meeting held at the Government House, in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

The governor, who assured Edo people of adequate security during the election, urged voters to come out en masse to cast their ballots for their preferred candidates. He noted that the State will be very peaceful as all security agencies are on ground to protect the electorates.

According to him: “We reviewed the security situation, beginning with the forthcoming September 2nd local government election in Edo State. The local government election will be held on Saturday and one unique thing about the election is that movement is not restricted. People will be allowed to go about their normal activities after voting. Movement within the State and commuters going through the State will not be restricted.

“The security must be high. That is why we have met with the various security agencies to look at their readiness and preparation for the election.

“From the level of mobilization, we have seen what is happening across the parties and believe that there is quite a considerable level of sensitization. People will come out to vote. My advice is that as they come out to vote, they should do it peacefully. Election is not war.

“Enough preparation has been made to secure the people so that they can go to the polling unit, vote and go home. If they need to come back and wait for the votes to be counted and the election declared, they can also do so, but it must be peaceful.

The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Dankwara, said security agencies are prepared and ready for the local government election, noting: “We are prepared for the election and we are all on the same page with our sister security agencies and surely the election will be very peaceful.”

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has commended Bendel Insurance Football Club for their outstanding performance against ASO Chlef of Algeria during the preliminary stage of the CAF Confederations Cup, assuring the team of sustained support to ensure that they continue to do the State proud on the continental stage.

Bendel Insurance of Benin had last Saturday qualified for the next round of the CAF Confederations Cup after defeating ASO Chlef of Algeria 4-3 on penalties.

Receiving the victorious team, its officials and supporters at the Government House in Benin City, Obaseki reassured of his government’s commitment to sports development.

He said, “I want to thank you my boys for making us really proud and congratulate you for this great performance. You gave me your words and you kept your words. We thank God for your victory.

“It’s a long road ahead but you have shown from this first outing that you are up to the task and all you need is encouragement from the owners of the Club. I just want you to know that as long as I am on this seat as governor of Edo State, I will continue to support you.

Obaseki added, “We would do everything to bring out the best in you. We believe in you, you are good and you need support and encouragement as I speak for all Edo people. We are all praying for you and are sure Edo people will all come out on the 16th of September to support you against the Moroccan team, just as they did the last time against the Algerians.”

The governor also commended the coach and the technical team for their commitment which led to the victory, adding, “I want to thank the coach and the technical officials of the team for taking this assignment very seriously and responsibly. Thanks for taking the team like your own, giving your best to the team and this is the time to give more to the team. For the supporters’ club, you have always been there and your bus is ready.”

Obaseki further noted, “I want to welcome you back home. There are greater works ahead of you. You have done your part and kept your word and I will do my part and keep my promise to you and also not forgetting the supporters’ club.”

On his part, the Chairman of Edo State Sports Commission, Yusuf Ali, who was full of praises for the governor for his support of the team, said: “We have put up a great team, mobilized the fans and it was well executed as the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium was filled to capacity. We won the first leg and people were doubting what would happen in the second leg in Algeria. It was a very tough battle but we won.

“This is the happiest moment for us as we drove straight from the Airport to your office to receive us.”

Also, the Technical Director and Head Coach of Bendel Insurance Football Club of Benin, Monday Odigie, noted, “We are very grateful to you for the support you have given to the team since you came in as governor of Edo State. The boys will continue to give their very best to justify the huge investments and attention you have given to the team. We pray God continues to lead us to come out with a better performance as we have done.”

Politics / No Plan To Impeach Deputy Governor – Edo Assembly Speaker by DollarUp: 5:01pm On Aug 18, 2023
…No crisis in govt, we’re focused, says Obaseki

The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA), Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, has said there is no plan whatsoever to impeach the State Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, urging Edo people to disregard rumours of the purported impeachment by the State Assembly.

Agbebaku disclosed this on Friday when the 24 members of the Assembly visited the State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, at the Government House, in Benin City.

He said, “We are here to clear the air on the insinuation of the impeachment of the Deputy Governor of Edo State. I want to let the people of Edo State know that there was nothing of such in the State House of Assembly.

“There was no time that the governor called me and instructed me that there must be an impeachment against the Deputy Governor. The rumour of impeachment is from the pit of hell. I want to let Edo people know today that till tomorrow, and the governor has not called to say the deputy governor should be impeached, next tomorrow is coming and I don’t think the governor will say that to us.”

The Speaker further noted, “When I approached the governor, he asked if there’s anything of such? He asked what the impeachment is for? I told him there is no such plan. Nothing of such is going on. On my own, I called the Deputy Governor to tell him that there is nothing like an impeachment plan by the Assembly and what he heard was rumour.”

Agbebaku continued, “Today, I want to let Edo people know that the story about the impeachment of the Deputy Governor is just mere rumour as the governor has no such plans today, tomorrow, and forever; the governor doesn’t have such plans.

“This will be our second courtesy call to you (Governor). We are here to remind you that what we came to tell you in our first courtesy call, we are standing by it. We are resolute to follow in your footsteps and ensure you finish well. It is our responsibility as members of our various constituencies to give you the backing to finish well and strong.

“I also want to thank you for your resilience and for the rumors making you address the press as we don’t need that now but what we need is to make Edo people happy. We are here to support you and ensure you finish strong.

“The 24 members of the EDHA are all here to let you know that we will join you to finish strong as Edo people must live a good life and you are already setting the pace.”

On his part, Governor Godwin Obaseki said the focus of his administration is to continue with its developmental strides in the State as he would not be distracted on delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of Edo State.

He noted, “We have done so much in Edo. What the world should be hearing about us now should be the positive things going on in the State, not news about trouble or crisis. I want to thank the Speaker and members of the Assembly for this courtesy and solidarity visit. We have so much work to be done and I will try as much as possible not to allow any distraction.

“There is no crisis in Edo. No crisis in government. No crisis in EDHA and those who benefit from crisis, creating crisis, reporting crisis should not be given the opportunity here. What should be of concern to us today is the failure of federal roads in the State which have almost incapacitated the State as the people are unable to move. That should be a crucial concern to us as Edo people. Crisis situation is like a war situation where we can't move within our State. We have extensive federal roads and they lack the capacity of maintaining it and we in Edo and in the Country are almost cut off.”

The governor added, “We must speak about this and our citizens must know this and the efforts we have put in and that we are trying our best to build our own internal roads to get out of this situation and grow the economy of our State.”

Politics / Obaseki Lauds Military, Other Security Forces For Improved Safety, Security In E by DollarUp: 6:25pm On Aug 17, 2023
…assures of sustained collaboration to protect citizens, investments

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has lauded the military and other security forces in the State for their sustained collaboration with the state government in ensuring a formidable security architecture that guarantees the protection of lives and property of Edo people as well as the safety of businesses and investments in the State.

Obaseki said this when he received the General Officer Commanding 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Valentine Uzochukwu Okoro, who led other top military personnel on a courtesy visit to the Government House, in Benin City.

He said, “We want to thank your men for the support and assistance they continue to render to us in Edo to secure our State. The Brigade Command and your men in Benin and across the State are very active players in our Security Council and security architecture. We have enjoyed a very warm and cordial relationship with them and we do all to make sure they are comfortable.

“I thank you for giving the permission for the Army to be part of the squad that is training our vigilante network as we just completed the training of 1,500 of our men. From inception, the military has been part of designing the programme, helping us with the screening and things we need to do properly.”

The governor continued: “Please thank the Chief of Army Staff for the approval we received to build Forward Operational Base (FOB) in the State. The FOB in Ehor is almost ready and we would like to go through you to ask that he comes to commission what he has started.

“That deployment has helped us tremendously in the State because, before the deployment, the incident of kidnapping on that axis of the road was bad. We have now seen the direct benefits of having the military support our security efforts.

“Also, we want to thank the Chief of Army Staff and tell him that when he comes, he should use the opportunity to do the second foundation laying for the FOB in Sobe which has been approved, and also the operations taken in that axis which has been very successful reducing the number of incidents of kidnapping and activities of bandits in that area significantly.”

Obaseki added, “We are anxious to start the building of the OB there so that the men can be stationed there. Unfortunately, some of the bandits displaced from this area have moved up North towards the Akoko-Edo axis and increased the incidents in these areas. We thank you for the operation you have commenced this week. I am sure you will help us get more resources from the Auchi Brigade to support the efforts in that area.”

Earlier, Okoro commended the governor for his support and the conducive environment created for the officers and men of the military to effectively perform their duties of securing lives and property in the State.

He said, “I recently assumed command of 2 Division and decided to visit formation to familiarise myself with the operating environment. Thank you for what you have done to mitigate power supply in our cantonment and for other support to our men in Edo State. I assure you of the collaboration of the Army to check security and ensure citizens live in a secured environment.”

He is a loyal, consistent ally – Igbinedion

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has extolled the virtues of Edo former Commissioner for Agriculture, Sir Chris Agbowanegbe, describing him as very distinguished and someone who cares so much about his people.

The governor spoke over the weekend in Benin City, Edo State capital, during the celebration of the 70th birthday anniversary of Agbonwanegbe.

Governor Obaseki, who was a special guest at the event, said he holds the celebrant in high esteem for his consistency in following up on developments across the state and bringing to his attention issues of state that require his interventions.

While thanking God for his life, the governor congratulated him for his achievements, noting: “I have known him for the past 10 years as a brother and a friend. He is consistent, reliable and someone who believes in his people. He texts me almost every month to remind me of one issue or the other affecting Iyekeorhionmwon, particularly around Ugo.

‘‘It is the pressure he mounted on me that made me accelerate the construction of the Benin/Abraka Road, especially the section going to Ugo. For your information, Chris, I have now divided the contract into two. I brought two contractors so that they can finish that road before Christmas.’’

Turning to him, Obaseki said, “I hope that is enough as a birthday present for you?” Then turning back to the audience, he declared, “distinguish ladies and gentlemen, we are here to celebrate with one of our own, the one we are very proud of and we thank God for your life, we pray that God Almighty, who have seen you to the age of 70, will make sure that you continue to be in good health at 80, at 90, and you are on your own thereafter.”

Earlier in his remark, the former Governor of Edo State, Chief Lucky Igbinedion, who was the chairman of the occasion, congratulated the celebrant for his consistency and loyalty.

Represented by Alland Omorogbe, describing Agbonwanegbe, who served under him in different capacities and as Commissioner for Agriculture, Igbinedion said: “You are a much respected man, a strong man and of strong character and conviction, who has distinguished himself in every respect. Very consistent and loyal.”

Obaseki: Shaibu manipulated Edo youth council election in pursuit of his selfish ambition to become governor

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said that his deputy, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, manipulated the election of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Edo State Chapter, to install an Executive Council (EXCO) to advance his selfish ambition of becoming Governor of Edo State.

Obaseki made the revelation, at the weekend, during the celebration of the International Youths Day, with youths in the state, at the Youth House, in Benin City.

Recall that the emergence of the immediate past EXCO of NYCN, Edo State chapter, had sparked controversy among youth groups in the state as various interest groups protested the imposition of persons on the organisation and its organs. It took the intervention of the governor, who immediately moved to disband the EXCO and call for fresh elections, to restore order and sanity to the council.

Speaking on the crisis that rocked the Youth Council, Obaseki noted that Shaibu worked behind his back in an attempt to fester his ambition through the youth council.

According to the governor, “I want to apologise over the unfortunate incident that happened with the youth council election. It was done without my authorization and knowledge.

“As you can see now, the reason why my deputy governor manipulated your election is because he has political ambition and thought he could control and use the council to achieve his political goals. Please, I apologise. Going forward you will have an independent, well organised and well covered transparent election.”

Commending the youths, Edo First Lady, Betsy Obaseki, said, “You are the ones we are looking up to. That is the reason why we are getting involved in your affairs and life and are here to support you. We are expecting great things from you and are confident that you will not disappoint us.”

Edo graduates 1,500 security personnel to strengthen intelligence gathering, community policing

...reward system in place to motivate personnel

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the 1,500 Edo State Security, Vigilante/Hunter Network (ESSVN), will strengthen efforts to boost intelligence gathering and community policing across the State.

Obaseki made the remarks at the passing out parade of the second set of ESSVN officials, held at the Ogida Police Training School, in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State.

The governor said the exercise is part of the process to firm up the security architecture of the State, adding, “Today marks a major milestone in our renewed efforts to strengthen the security structure in Edo State to protect lives and properties, as we graduate another batch, making it about 2,037 trainees. The first set was 537 and now another 1,500.

“As a government, we are aware of the roles security plays in our socio-economic growth and development. This is why we have sustained efforts to continue to build a capable and well-trained security network across the state and to ensure that they are adequately equipped with the knowledge and skills which are required to effectively deal with the rapid changes in the security landscape.

"We are committed to building the capacity of all our security personnel who are at the forefront of combating crimes in Edo State. We understand the need to collaborate with other agencies, particularly with the Federal Government. That is why we have put in resources to upgrade facilities in the Police Training School".

Obaseki also thanked the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Commissioner of Police (CP) and other security agencies for collaborating with his administration in designing the training programmes for members of the vigilante and hunter network.

He noted that the state government recognises the peculiar need for a decentralized and participatory security model which is the current trend in the world. The governor added that a reward system has been implemented to motivate operatives of the ESSVN.

"We believe that it is when citizens are empowered to take ownership of their safety and become an integral part and partners in preventing and addressing the security concerns in their communities, that is when there would be guaranteed security," he added.

The governor expressed appreciation for the efforts of the Nigerian Police Force, Nigerian Army, Nigerian Correctional Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Department of State Services (DSS), and other partners and members of the Edo State Security Council who have continued to support and strengthen efforts to prevent, deter and respond to criminal activities which have led to the success recorded in the management of security over last few years.

On his part, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Adamu Dankwara, said the Force takes the training seriously as it will help in combating crimes and ensuring a crime-free society.

The CP, represented by DCP, Millar Dantawaye, urged the trainees to work in synergy with DPOs, Heads of operational units of Police in their various communities and other sister security agencies to check crime and immediately hand over suspects to the Police for further actions.

The Commandant, Police Training School, Benin, ACP Joseph Esegine, said about 1,500 personnel of the Edo State Security Vigilante/Hunter Network (ESSVN) Batch B from 12 local government areas of Edo South and Edo Central Senatorial Districts passed out from the school after 10 days of intensive training.

Investment / We Must Be United To Rebuild Nigeria, Says Obaseki by DollarUp: 6:34pm On Aug 10, 2023
…seeks increased collaboration to boost capacity, productivity of Edo workforce

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said Nigerians must come together to rebuild the nation and reposition it on the path of sustainable economic growth and development.

The governor noted that no matter the frustration and lamentations, the task of rebuilding the country remains the duty of Nigerians and shouldn’t be left for external actors.

Obaseki spoke while addressing members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Of Nigeria (ICAN) who were at the Government House, Benin City.

He said, "At this time in our national development, we need to rebuild this country and it's only Nigerians that can rebuild it. People will not come from outside to build and develop Nigeria for us. No matter the frustration and lamentations, we will do the hard work of building the nation. Institutes like yours have a great role to perform as it continues to set the standard as your Institute has achieved many great things over the years.”

Obaseki said his government through the John Odigie Oyegun Public Service Academy will sustain efforts to foster accelerated human capital development within the state public service, in collaboration with ICAN and other institutions.
Obaseki stated, "On Saturday, we will be opening JOOPSA which is one of its kind in the sub-continent. It's built by the state government for the training and development of public servants. The Institute is going to collaborate with a lot of institutes globally to enhance and strengthen the productivity and capacity of our public servants.

"Today, JOOPSA has developed a lot of relationships. It is not going to award certificates or degrees alone but will serve as an engine to strengthen service delivery, strengthening the capacity of our public servants as they work to deliver quality services to our people.”
He added, "In that light, we have courses slated to train our public servants in the areas of accounting, bookkeeping, and financial management, among others, and can't find a better Institute that will give us the level of collaboration we need to help us develop and produce the quality of manpower needed by the Country".

The governor further noted, "When we contact you for quality manpower, we are sure that your products are people who are diligent, and are of strong character and integrity. Your members have contributed and brought value to our government. Whatever we have contributed that made you rank the State third in your ranking has been largely contributed by your members who are in our government and that made us achieve the current position.

"Because of the value received and contributed by your members, we will make it a priority to hire more of your members into government. As a standing policy of my government, any Edo young person who makes a first class in any of the Nigerian universities gets automatic employment. I will give priority to qualified chartered accountants because we need them.”

In his response, Okwuosa commended the governor for his strides across various sectors of the State, adding, “As an Institute, we advocate for accountability and transparency in public finance management. ICAN accountability index which has been endorsed by the World Bank and International Federation of Accountants has helped to assess States' performance in public finance management and Edo is ranked 3rd position in the 2020 ICAN AI from its bottom position in 2019.”

Politics / Imuse, Edo APC Insensitive To The Plight Of Nigerians, As Party Superintends by DollarUp: 4:22pm On Jul 26, 2023
Imuse, Edo APC insensitive to the plight of Nigerians, as party superintends over liquidation of Nigeria

It was quite depressing to read a statement from the Chairman of the Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Col. David Imuse, whose government at the centre has thrown the entire State, and I dare say, the entire country into pervasive gloom and perpetual fear for the future.

Imuse’s statement is a slap on the faces of citizens of Edo State and, indeed, all Nigerians, considering the fact that it is his party, the APC, that is superintending over the gradual liquidation of the Nigerian State.

A litre of fuel which used to sell for N159 now sells for N700; one dollar which exchanged for N150, today goes for N870 and above; a pound which exchanged for between N850 and N900, is now exchanging over N1,100. Nigeria is gasping for breath under the chokehold of the APC.

Instead of Imuse to come to Edo people with unreserved apologies over their obvious failure to steady the ship of State, he is sauntering around with arrogant statements, grandstanding and attempting to shift the blame for the suffering of the masses to an innocent Governor, whose effort in the efficient management of the Edo economy has so far prevented a descent into anarchy.

Imuse in his statement repeatedly spoke about a certain N16 billion that was refunded to the Edo State Government from the alleged intervention in the repair of Federal Roads by Adams Oshiomhole, when he was governor.

He, however, conveniently left out the fact that the same Adams Oshiomhole left the state with nothing less than N160 billion debt expended on various jamborees, including the so-called Federal Roads that he fixed while seriously needed infrastructure and economic development in the State suffered.

Imuse may not have regard for his leaders including the Governor of Edo State but he should at least spare a thought for innocent Nigerians who are paying the ultimate price daily on the various completely dilapidated Federal Roads around Edo State. The least they expect from the Federal Government is to live up to their responsibilities of protecting their lives and properties.

The governor, who received the design at the Government House in Benin City, said the 170-room hotel is part of projects by the government to boost its tourism receipts and drive economic growth, adding that the project on completion will enhance the State’s chances to host sporting events.

According to him, “The reason why we have not won the right to host international sporting events is because of lack of accommodation that would pass the standard test of the governing bodies for events like gymnastics, swimming, tracks, and others.

“The need for this project can’t be over-emphasized. Our goal as a government is to complete the project before leaving office in 2024. With the right team, procurement processes, and right partners, this is possible.

“The financing for this project is being created and the project will pay itself up in less than five years. Projects like this are dollar-based and we need to make decisions on time and finish our procurement early enough. The team has been diligent enough in their job as we are dealing with public funds and making sure of accountability and transparency in the way the project is being handled.”

Obaseki added, “There is clarity on what is to be done to bring this project to reality. There is clarity about the long list of items to be bought ahead of holidays in Europe to enable these items to be bought and shipped on time. We will continue to support the project.”

Charging the project contractors on quality, the Governor said, “We know the quality standard you are made of and know with you, we have no doubt that you will do a good job.”

Earlier, the Project Manager, Jerry Donkor Associates, Jerry Donkor, who presented the design to the governor, said the project will be ready for opening in October 2024.

Noting that construction work is proposed to commence 27th of July 2023, Donkor added that “The project will be handed over to the Edo State Government on the 19th of September 2024, while the actual opening will be on the 18th of October 2024.”

On her part, the Commissioner for Finance, Budget, Economic Planning and Development, Mrs. Adaze Aguele-Kalu, said the project is very essential and critical for the State’s economic development.

Hailing the governor’s commitment to ensuring a safe and conducive environment for businesses to thrive, the Commissioner noted, “Opening a 170-room hotel will attract a lot of domestic and international travelers, boosting tourism in the State. It will open the State for hospitality, luxury and business.

“This hotel is a great opportunity for development as it is well located. The governor is passionate about ensuring we close this in the next 12 to 16 months as our partners are experienced.”

Politics / Edo PDP: Chief Hillary Otsu...the Proverbial Tortoise by DollarUp: 6:55pm On Jul 06, 2023
Edo PDP: Chief Hillary Otsu...the proverbial tortoise

By Barrister Ken Ebikaide

With the Edo State Local Government Elections just a few months away, the latest attempt by Chief Hillary Otsu to delegitimize the candidacy of members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the run up to the election reveals a pattern that have over time threatened the soul of the party.

It really speaks to the loyalty, magnanimity and patriotic zeal of members of the PDP in Edo State that they have exercised restraint in accommodating the excesses of some of these executive members, who seek nothing but the destruction of the party in the State, when the generality of the party members desire progress and to engender sustainable development in the State through the instrumentality and vehicle of the PDP.

Hillary Otsu have continued to deploy underhand tactics and sleight of hand in service of parochial and selfish interests, he is hellbent on dragging the party on a path of perdition. From his action, it is clear that he has long exited the party in spirit and in deed, but have remained to wreak havoc and deprive loyal party members the opportunity to participate in the electoral process and the accrued benefits that stem from their membership of the PDP.

While stakeholders in the political space heaved a sigh of relief and are gearing up for the local council election, the relative calm in PDP camp was replaced with an uneasy calm when copies of a Court proceeding requesting for an order to delegitimize PDP candidates in the forthcoming council election, was made public, alerting the members of the party to the tactics of the Secretary of the PDP in Edo State, Hillary Otsu, to subvert the chances of the party and its membership in the election.

In the court proceeding, Secretary of the PDP in Edo State, Hillary Otsu and 17 others in Suit B/506/2023, urged the High Court of Edo State, for an order of perpetual injunction restraining the third defendant (Edo State Independent Electoral Commission) from “acting on or recognising any purported list of candidates emerging from the 2nd defendant’s list of candidates for Local Government Election, 2023 in Edo State.”

It is pertinent to state that this is not the first instance when Otsu has orchestrated a calculated attempt to jeopardize the chances of the party and its members during an election, which calls to question his real interest in the party.

The same antics were deployed in the primary election leading up to the 2023 general election, during which Hillary Otsu and his co-travellers dragged the party to court.

Members of the PDP maintained neutrality and decided that whoever emerged from the conflict would get the members’ maximum support. They expected that the courts would settle the impasse and that the rule of law would prevail, ensuring that justice was done. The episode was allowed to pass.

A few months ago when EDSIEC first published the timetable for the conduct of the Local government council elections, they went to court to stop it.

Also, when Governor Godwin Obaseki offered Senior Special Assistant (SSA) and Special Assistant (SA) to members of the PDP, these persons led by Chief Hillary Otsu attempted to stop PDP members from taking the appointments and when they did, they were threatened and called names. The few that fell for their antics were effectively disenfranchised and prevented from reaping the benefits of being members of the party.

The endgame of Otsu is that he is not even trying to substitute PDP candidates this time, but attempting to ensure that the PDP does not have candidates in the forthcoming election.

It is a clear indication that he is no longer a member of PDP in Edo State, he is not interested in the growth or progress of the party but is rather working from within to drag the party to its knees.

The implication of the move must not be lost on the stakeholders in the state.

The local council election is germane to running a broad-based grassroot political machinery that has not less than 480 citizens and party members engaged directly with government and thousands of their supporters across the 18 local governments in the state.

To break this down to specifics, there would be 18 local government chairmen; 18 vice chairmen; 192 councillors across the wards in the State; five supervisory councillors across the 18 local government areas and at least 10 Senior Special Assistants (SSAs) and Special Assistants (SAs) across the 18 local councils in the state. These are the persons whose political fortunes will be truncated by the self-serving activities of Hillary Otsu, who is now in court to ensure that the PDP does not field candidates in the coming local council elections in the state.

It is obvious that this is an extention of the deal brokered during the presidential elections to sabotage PDP for the benefit of APC.

In all of these, it is impressive that the members of the PDP in Edo State have conducted themselves in a very disciplined manner and with equanimity. They deserve the praise and are encouraged to toe the path of peace in the run-up to the council elections which is scheduled for September. It is a sign that the political scene in Edo is attaining maturity and these PDP members will continue to work collectively for the progress of the people and the State in the wake of unwarranted distractions.
