Science/Technology / AI And The Robotics Revolution by Dominiondom: 10:56am On Aug 11, 2022 |
If Hollywood standards are anything to go by, the future is full of killer robots waging war against humanity. Most sci-fi plot lines have artificial intelligence systems running out of control, taking over the world and destroying our lives. The future looks bleak. But is it? Robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) systems already help us with everything from vacuuming and grocery shopping to driving cars and booking appointments. Machines that can learn, make decisions and automate tasks are already part of our lives—the big question is, how do we make sure they’re helping society, rather than harming us? It’s these ethical conundrums that researchers like Professor Toby Walsh are working to answer. As we continue to develop machines with decision-making abilities that are comparable to those of a human mind, recognizing and addressing these questions are more important than ever. Technology like AI will change society. It’s already becoming part of our lives,’ says Walsh. ‘But society also gets to change technology. We need to work out how to make sure it improves the quality of everyone’s life.’ Walsh’s fascination with AI, robotics and technology was fueled by a childhood spent reading science fiction by authors such as Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke. He has since built his career around artificial intelligence, trying to understand how computers can make decisions and act on them. Machines have been helping us with our work for a while. In a series of technological revolutions, humans moved from mostly working in fields, to factories, to offices. We built machines to take over tasks that were physically demanding, tediously dull or downright dangerous. With each societal shift, the nature of work changed. Historically, most of the machines we have built are very good at doing narrowly-defined, predictable work. Now, however, we’re developing intelligent machines that can learn and think a little like us. Sometimes, with the right training, they’re even better at making decisions than we are. ‘Humans are actually terrible at making decisions,’ Walsh says. ‘Behavioural psychology is full of examples of how humans are irrational in their decision-making. With the large data sets that computers can process, machines could be much better at it. ’‘What does it mean mathematically for a computer program to be fair—not to be racist, ageist, or sexist? These are challenging research questions that we’re now facing.’ Machines can only learn based on the data they’re presented with—so what happens if there are problems with that data? We’ve already seen artificial intelligence systems that preference male over female candidates applying for technical jobs, or making a range of errors about people with dark skin tones, based on the biased data they were provided with. arehouse-dwelling robots don’t get sore feet, aching muscles or occupational injuries from picking, packing and sending deliveries from a warehouse. AI algorithms can speed up medical research by rapidly (and accurately) predicting the shapes that proteins will fold into, while other algorithms help us communicate by breaking down language barriers. We’re watching the next technological revolution unfold. That means navigating a period of significant societal disruption as entire industries become taken over by machines—something that Walsh acknowledges we’ll need to manage carefully.‘We should celebrate when robots take over jobs because those were dull, repetitive jobs that humans probably should never have been doing.’ ‘We need to work out, as a society, how to support people as they re-skill to keep ahead of machines,’ said Walsh. ‘We’re going to be using technologies in 30 years’ time that were invented in 20 years’ time. We’re going to have to do lifelong learning and pick up those skills as we go along.’ But the future isn’t as bleak as Hollywood might have us believe. Transitioning to the Age of AI doesn’t mean humanity will be left jobless and adrift. It just means the nature of work will change, just as it has done in revolutions past: probably for the better. It’s a future that Walsh is looking forward to. ‘We should celebrate when robots take over jobs because those were dull, repetitive jobs that humans probably should never have been doing! We should celebrate now that we’ve got machines to do those things.’ source: https://advanxis.com/blog-news/tech/ai-and-the-robotics-revolution for similar stories visit: http://advanxis.com/blog-news/news

Science/Technology / Robots Will Soon Start Replacing Waiters In Your Favorite Resturants by Dominiondom: 10:59am On Aug 05, 2022 |
The Bear Robotics “Servi” food service robot seamlessly integrates with restaurant workflows by both delivering food to tables and clearing the tables at the end of a meal. As soon as guests arrive, Servi greets patrons with a warm voice and pleasing gestures. Customers then place their order through Servi, who relays the order directly to the kitchen. Once the order is ready, Servi is loaded up on one of her two top platforms to deliver food to the table. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrlCAvU2D-c Servi navigates to the selected table, carefully avoiding people and obstacles along the way. At the end of the meal, Servi returns to the table for diners to place dishes in her bottom bin. It can work full-time, in particular – depending on the configuration – from 8 to 12 hours on a single charge, according to the specifications released by Bear Robotics. The design is simple and functional, without appealing to the humanoid forms of the Pepper robot from Softbank Robotics, or the quadruped design of Spot, from Boston Dynamics, both companies belonging to Softbank. The food serving robot can move around the room, detecting obstacles and avoiding them, in particular, avoiding collisions with visitors. He is able to deliver orders and act as an assistant waiter, taking dirty dishes to the sink. The versatility of the robot is ensured by replaceable trays. Several robots can work simultaneously. Servi is said to improve the efficiency of the establishment and the quality of customer service. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpiJ5TuwAac source:http://advanxis.com/blog-news/robots-will-soon-start-replacing-waiters-in-your-favorite-resturants for similar stories visit: http://advanxis.com/blog-news/tech

Science/Technology / This Chatbot Can Speak For You After Your Death, But How Ethical Is That? by Dominiondom: 11:11am On Aug 04, 2022 |
Machine learning and Artificial Intelligence might have gone too far. Known as a deadbot, this type of chatbot allowed a man named Barbeau to exchange text messages with an artificial “Jessica”. Despite the ethically controversial nature of the case, why would it be right or wrong, ethically desirable or reprehensible, to develop a deadbot? Since Jessica was a real (albeit dead) person, Barbeau consenting to the creation of a deadbot mimicking her seems insufficient. Even when they die, people are not mere things with which others can do as they please. This is why our societies consider it wrong to desecrate or to be disrespectful to the memory of the dead. In other words, we have certain moral obligations towards the dead, insofar as death does not necessarily imply that people cease to exist in a morally relevant way. In what specific terms something might be detrimental to the dead is a particularly complex issue that I will not analyze in full. It is worth noting, however, that even if the dead cannot be harmed or offended in the same way as the living, this does not mean that they are invulnerable to bad actions, nor that these are ethical. The dead can suffer damages to their honor, reputation, or dignity (for example, posthumous smear campaigns), and disrespect toward the dead also harms those close to them. Moreover, behaving badly toward the dead leads us to a society that is more unjust and less respectful to people’s dignity overall. source:http://advanxis.com/blog-news for similar stories visit: http://advanxis.com/blog-news/news |

Health / Re: Nigerian Robotics Engineer Designs Smart Bra To Detect Breast Cancer by Dominiondom: 9:28am On Jul 29, 2022 |
“This bra doesn’t replace normal bra or is worn throughout the day. This particular bra is worn during the breast cancer check which doesn’t last more than five minutes.” Some oncologists have lauded the innovations, saying it would help in the fight against cancer since early detection is one of the quickest ways to combat the disease. Another oncologist, Dr Bukola Oshikanlu, described the innovation as a good development especially because it has the ability to help in the early detection of cancer which is fundamental to the cure of the disease. She said, “Yes it will, but for women who detect abnormal signals from their breasts, they should then go for additional tests to confirm if truly they have breast cancer. An additional clinical test is needed to confirm that it is breast cancer and once the diagnosis is confirmed, they should commence treatment immediately.” SOURCE: http://advanxis.com/blog-news/tech for similar stories visit:http://advanxis.com/blog-news/tech

Health / Nigerian Robotics Engineer Designs Smart Bra To Detect Breast Cancer by Dominiondom: 9:18am On Jul 29, 2022 |
Kemisola Bolarinwa, a robotics engineer, who developed the smart bra, stated: “My beloved mother died of breast cancer in 2017 at the University College Hospital in Ibadan, Nigeria because it was diagnosed late. “In her ward, I saw women of different age groups, even teenagers, groaning under the pain of breast cancer. That was when I felt I needed to contribute my part to fight the disease.” The bra is lined with small, battery-operated ultrasound sensors and syncs up with a mobile or web app. She said, “In 2021, I was able to do a test-run on a prototype of the smart bra. The bra has small sensors coupled with its nanotechnology that doesn’t cause harm to the body tissues. 1 Like
