Crime / Undergraduate Explains Why He Impersonated Oyo Governor’s Wife On Facebook by Donaldillikah(m): 11:18am On Dec 14, 2015
The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, CP, Mr. Leye Oyebade, has confirmed the arrest of a certain undergraduate of History and International Relations in an unidentified private University in Osun State, who impersonated the wife of Oyo state governor, Mrs. Florence Ajimobi on Facebook.

The 400-level student, simply identified as Adubi, had reportedly revealed that the heavy burden of paying his school fees after his father’s death, forced him into the crime.

According to the CP, who spoke with journalists at Eleyele in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, the suspect explained that the sudden death of his father last year, who was a laboratory scientist, made life difficult for him on campus.
“He was arrested for opening a fake Facebook account belonging to Mrs. Ajimobi. The suspect had the intention to defraud innocent and unsuspecting members of the public on the wall and timeline of the fake Facebook account by requesting them to pay certain amount into his bank account.

“The suspect lied to many people, informing them of the non-existent Women Empowerment Programme and Car Loan Scheme of the First Lady.

“The suspect confessed to the crime,” the CP said.

Confessing to the crime, Adubi said, “I opened a new Facebook account in the name of Mrs Ajimobi, searched for her pictures on Google and uploaded them later on the account and posted on the wall and timeline of the account, two, schemes – Women Empowerment Programme and Car Loan Scheme.

Adubi further stated that four persons contacted him on the scheme, but they said that they had not paid any money into his bank account.

“Initially, I contacted a woman and intimated her about a woman empowerment programme going on in Oyo State and she promised to get back to me. She was the only one I contacted concerning the empowerment programme.

“After that, I made it public on the timeline that there is a car loan scheme going on as a way through which the governor and his wife intended to compensate the people of Oyo State for their loyalty and faithfulness towards his administration. So, interested people contacted me.

“A woman contacted me first. She asked about the details of what it would take to get the car. I told her that the kind of car she wants would determine how much she would pay as deposit. She asked for NISSAN Micra vehicle and I told her it would cost N300, 000. But she would make N100, 000 as deposit. So, she said she would get back to me, but she never did. Another person contacted me for NISSAN Micra vehicle and he also promised to get back to me and up till now, he did not.

“Then, another man contacted me as well for 2003 model of Toyota Camry. I told him the 2003 model was not available, but informed him that it was the 2006 model that was available and I asked him to deposit 300,000. He promised to get back to me as well. From that moment till now, I have not received a dime from him as well.

“I believe I should get a pardon because, I have not received a dime from anybody. If I am actually given the opportunity to have a heart-to-heart talk with the First Lady, I can plead with her as a son to assist me so that I can go back to school and get a first degree. Nobody around me, who knows me very well, would allow my level of intelligence to waste away,” he said.

“I lost my father last year and the financial burden has been too much for me to pay my school fees. So, that was what led me into it.

“Nobody taught me how to do it. In this computer age, every youth has access to the Internet; provided you are computer literate, there are so many things you will be able to do by yourself without being taught.

“I still have a mother, but it is different when the responsibilities of two parents become that of one person. The portion of my father’s gratuity that got to me was used to settle the debt I incurred while going to school.

“I plead with well-meaning Nigerians to give me a chance to go back to school,” Adubi added.

Crime / Lagos Police Arrest Herbalist Who Makes Charms For Robbers by Donaldillikah(m): 11:04am On Dec 14, 2015
A certain herbalist, identified as Musiliu Otun was arrested over the weekend by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly keeping arms, ammunitions, and making charms for suspected armed robbers.

Confirming the arrest, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Muyiwa Adejobi, said, “SARS operatives have been probing the involvement of the herbalist in many robbery operations, which led to his arrest.”

The herbalist, the PPRO said was arrested at the Itunranikenken area of Sagamu, in the Sagamu Local Government Area, with guns, ammunition and charms.

Adejobi said the Commissioner of Police, Abdulmajid Ali, had directed that proper investigations be carried out on the cases.

He said the command would leave no stone unturned to ensure adequate protection of lives and property in Ogun State.

In a similar development, Adejobi also said the Sagamu Police Division on Sunday, December 13, arrested one Kabiru Soyemi for robbery and cultism.

According to him, the policemen who responded to a distress call from some victims attacked by the suspect, arrested Soyemi with a locally-made pistol.

Adejobi added that other members of the robbery gang fled, however, “both suspects are helping the police in their investigation, and efforts are on to arrest the fleeing members of the syndicate.”

Politics / Buratai Arrests Soldiers Involved In Benue Killings, Hands Them Over To NHRC by Donaldillikah(m): 10:50am On Dec 14, 2015
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant-General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, has arrested men of the Nigerian Army who killed some civilians and destroyed their property worth millions of naira at the North Bank area of Makurdi, Benue State and handed them over to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) for prosecution.

Executive Secretary of the commission, Prof. Bem Angwe, disclosed this in Konshisha Local Government Area of the state during a programme to sensitise the people on their rights organised by a House of Representatives member representing Vandeikya/Konshisha federal constituency, Hon. Iorwase Hembe, in collaboration with the state government.

Angwe said all the soldiers, who in July this year, killed and destroyed people’s property, were arrested on the orders of the COAS and had been brought to the commission’s secretariat in Abuja for prosecution.

He vowed that all the affected officers would be punished according to the laws of the land and compensation paid to the victims.
He warned the people against the violation of human rights such as extra-judicial killings, domestic violence, child abuse, kidnapping, sexual harassment, child labour, unlawful detention and all forms of discrimination as well as denial of rights of education, health and water, constitutes abuses.

The NHRC boss said the commission was poised to collaborate with the National Assembly to educate Nigerians on human rights across the country.
While commending the House of Representatives member and the state government for organising the enlightenment campaign in the area, Angwe urged the people to report anyone that violate their rights to the commission without any cost.

The United Nations Declaration of Human Rights booklet, which has been translated into Tiv vernacular was distributed to the people.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Chairman of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), Paul Unongo, has called on the Federal Government under President Muhammadu Buhari, to release the N8 billion judgement debt owed victims of the 2001 Zaki Biam military invasion in Benue State.
Former President of the defunct Benue Development Movement (BDM), the late Dr. Alexander Gaadi, had dragged the Federal Government to court, claiming the initial sum of N41.8 billion as compensation for victims of the invasion of Zaki Biam, Gbeji, Vaase and Katsina Ala towns during which thousands of people were massacred.

Politics / FG Spends N3.42tn In Nine Months by Donaldillikah(m): 10:03am On Dec 14, 2015
In the first nine months of the year, the Federal Government had spent N3.42tn out of the total N4.493tn spending approved in the 2015 budget.

These figures are contained in the Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper (2016-2018) sent by President Muhammadu Buhari to the National Assembly.

The document was approved by the Federal Executive Council on Monday and sent to both chambers of the National Assembly on Tuesday for deliberation and approval.

In the MTEF, a copy of which was obtained by our correspondent, the Federal Government said the N3.42tn was spent on both recurrent and capital expenditure in the nine-month period.

It stated, “Of the total appropriation of N4.49tn and a supplementary budget of N574.53bn for spending on security and emergency provision of subsidy claims, N3.42tn had been spent as of September for both recurrent and capital, with the shortfall in revenue inflow being made up by additional financing from borrowing and other sources.

“Recurrent expenditure has been on track. About 78.1 per cent, that is N1.77tn of the N2.23tn budgeted for the payment of salaries, pensions and overheads has been released, while debt service has been largely covered.”

The document stated that while recurrent expenditure had been on track, capital spending had been lower than what was budgeted due to revenue shortfalls.
The seventh Senate had in passing the 2015 budget, slightly reduced the N2.607,601,000,300 proposed by the executive to N2.607,132,491,708 as recurrent expenditure, and simultaneously scaled down the capital expenditure from N642,848,999,699 estimated in the proposal to N556,995,465,449.

The budget was based on $53 per barrel oil benchmark price, an exchange rate of N190 to the United States dollar; 2.2782 million per barrels of crude oil production per day; and a deficit Gross Domestic Product of 1.12 per cent.

The document also put the fiscal deficit at N1.075tn; N953bn for debt service; and N375.6bn as statutory transfers.

Education took the lion’s share of the budget with N392.3bn; followed by the military, which got N338.7bn, while police commands and formations got N303.8bn.

In the same vein, N237bn was voted for the health sector; N153bn for the Ministry of Interior, while N25.1bn was budgeted for the Ministry of Works.

The MTEF stated, “Capital spending was lower than budgeted due to the revenue challenges and the need to cater for pressing procurement needs like payment of salaries and debt service.

“As of September, N194.77bn of the N557bn budgeted for capital spending had been spent by Ministries, Department and Agencies.”

The country had in the last 18 months experienced price and commodity shocks owing to decline in oil prices as well as crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism.

Politics / Lagos Approves Flyover Bridge For Ajah, Abule Egba by Donaldillikah(m): 9:56am On Dec 14, 2015
The Lagos State Government has approved the construction of flyover bridges for two of the State's high-density traffic zones, Ajah round about and Abule Egba junction. The two major projects were approved by the State's Executive Council and have been duly awarded to contractors for a speedy commencement of work.

In a press release issued yesterday December 13th by the State's Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Steve Ayorinde, the projects will be completed within 16 months.

The statement said the construction of the reinforced concrete flyover and signalized intersection at Ajah roundabout will be undertaken simultaneously with the rehabilitation of Freedom Road in Lekki, with a view to reducing the heavy traffic being recorded at the Ajah round-about and the Lekki-Ikoyi axis. Ayorinde said the Ajah flyover bridge will have a solar-powered signalized intersection in order to greatly improve traffic, while the upgrade of Freedom Road is expected to ease traffic considerably for vehicles using the Third Roundabout to connect Lekki through Admiralty way.

While the Ajah project will ease movement of residents and commuters on the Lagos Island - Ibeju Lekki areas, the construction of the reinforced concrete dual-carriage flyover bridge at Abule Egba junction will equally bring joy and relief to millions of commuters that use the Lagos -Abeokuta Expressway in Ifako-Ijaye Local Government Area of the State on a daily basis when completed. Like the Ajah project, Ayorinde said the Abule Egba flyover bridge will also have signalised intersection under it to service Oko-Oba and other link roads within the axis.

He said as at last weekend, more than 300 roads have been repaired and rehabilitated through the Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC)'s ceaseless road maintenance that has left no local government area unattended to.
