I've already answered that question. I'll ask you a question instead. What's the difference between a violent mutiny and a strike?
thats where the problem lies, you are talking about mutiny while am talking about strike...
MUTINY- Is an open rebellion against authority by soldiers or sailors-- Rebellion is a fight against an established government or ruler. While

STRIKE- is the refusal to work as a form of organised protest.

So you see mutiny and strike are two different topic, but the topic we are discussing here is strike, and i was not only talking about the soldiers, i was also talking about the police, airforce, and navy, you got to think like an economist, try to assume sometimes, this world is based on assumption, how can someone say that the world is coming to an end, can't you see that that person is assuming, so try to look into the future and forget the past...
Now if a situation in which fed govt want to scrap out ASUU can occur in the future, don't you think that the security forces can also go on strike, based on the assumption that we are living in a democratic country, just try to reason the situation...

The soldiers did not go on strike, they mutinied (going on strike implies that they simply refused to work. They went on a violent protest). Soldiers will not go on strike in Nigeria. They will not simply refuse to work. They will either lay their complaints through established channels or they will mutiny (that is, go on a violent protest or even overthrow the government). They know the consequences of a mere strike, why strike when you can use force of arms?
ok thats your own point of view, so are you trying to tell me that if they don't receive their salary for 4 months like ASUU, they would still not go on strike?
Politics / Re: What Would Happen In Nigeria If The Security Forces Goes On Strike For 2 Days? by DonColz1(m): 9:56am On Nov 30, 2013
Ok the soldiers went on strike and they were given life imprisonment, but that was in ondo state only, now imagine if it was nationwide, i mean the whole of nigeria, are you trying to say that they would imprison all the whole soldiers in Nigeria?, that is impossible nah, we are in a dynamic world, infact everything is changing. I want to ask you a question, did anybody ever believe that the medical doctors will go on strike?
Did anybody ever believe that jonathan would order the federal universities to open without ASUU?
Did anybody ever believe that they would release asari dokubo?
So you see anything can happen, don't be surprise when jonathan will wake up one day and decide not to pay the military,
Or don't you use to hear when jonathan would say that Nigeria has no money?

Politics / PDP Plans Punishment For Rebel Governors And Lawmakers by DonColz1(m): 2:50am On Nov 30, 2013
Rattled by the defection of five out of its seven aggrieved governors to the All Progressives Congress on Wednesday, the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party has scheduled an emergency meeting for next Monday.
Saturday PUNCHlearnt in Abuja, on Thursday that the party’s leadership at the meeting would determine the fate of the rebel governors.
It was further gathered that the emergency meeting would among other things, decide on what punitive measures to be taken against the governors and lawmakers, who are likely to join them.
Sources close to the party told our correspondents that the party was afraid there could be mass defection of the PDP National Assembly members to the APC.
Investigations also revealed that the National Working Committee of the PDP at the meeting would discuss how it would not lose its majority status in the National Assembly to the APC.
It was learnt that the meeting was specifically put in place to brainstorm on the movement of the governors to the APC because the weekly NWC meeting traditionally holds on Wednesdays.
One of our correspondents gathered that the leadership of the PDP had been considering how to curtail the movement of any lawmaker elected on the platform of the party to the opposition.
A source in the party said, “We are going to consider all the legal options before deciding on punitive measures for the governors and lawmakers that defect to the APC.
“Nothing is on the table yet, but I can assure you that the PDP will hit back. One of the punitive measures we will consider is impeachment of the governors and how feasible it is. By Monday, we will unfold our strategies. Also, we must ensure that the PDP does not become a minority party in the National Assembly.”
When contacted, the National Publicity secretary of the PDP, Chief Olisah Metuh, confirmed to one of our correspondents on the telephone on Thursday, that the PDP was indeed planning to hold the meeting on Monday.
He also said that the issue of the rebel governors would form part of deliberations.
According to him, the meeting will, among other things, discuss issues affecting the party in general and other recent developments in the polity including the defection of some of their governors.
Metuh, who also spoke on the issue of the threat by some lawmakers to defect from the PDP, said that the national leadership of the PDP had implicit confidence in the leadership of both houses of the National Assembly to maintain the party’s positions.
He said, “Well on the issue of Amaechi and the other governors who have defected, there is an emergency meeting of the NWC to discuss all matters on Monday.
“On the issue of the lawmakers, the leadership of the two houses of the National Assembly are PDP members. The leaders are capable and are loyal. We have confidence in them. They have not shown any cause for doubts. They are loyal party members who can be relied upon at any time. All I can tell you is that we are going to discuss all the issues.”
When contacted, the Kano State Governor, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso said he was not bothered about his position as governor.
This, he said, was because the struggle he and his colleagues were involved in was a struggle to salvage democracy and not about any individual.
Kwankwaso spoke toSaturday PUNCHthrough his Director of Press and Public Relations, Baba Dantiye, via telephone on Thursday.
He said, “Let’s wait and see what happens on Sunday (after the meeting with the President). It’s not a matter of seat; it’s the issue of rescuing democracy and the nation.”
Saturday PUNCH also tried to find out if the deputy governors of the affected states would also defect to APC, but most of them could not be reached for comments.
Although the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Umar Ganduje could not be reached for comments, a source close to him confided in one of our correspondents that he had implicit confidence in the governor.
The source said, “You know His Excellency, the Deputy Governor is a close confidant of the governor. Politically they have been on the same page and will continue to be.”
The Spokesperson of the Kwara State Governor, Dr. Muyideen Akorede, in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Thursday declined to respond to the question on whether the Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, would be willing to vacate his office as a result of his defection to the APC.
He said Ahmed was not in town, adding that he was the only person who could respond to such an issue.
“We have no response to the question. The governor is not in town. He is the only person that can respond to such a question,” Akorede said.
Meanwhile, a former governor of Kano State, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, has said that he is ready to work with anybody in the state because politics is about people.

I doubt that the army would go on strike. They would rather mutiny. That has happened a few times in the past (the most recent case that I can remember occurred when some soldiers alleged that they were not paid their UN allowance. Some soldiers were initially sentenced to life in prison for that mutiny).
you are just assuming, are you trying to say that the security forces can never go on strike What of if jonathan refuses to pay the security forces (army, navy and airforce) for one month, don't you think that they would go on strike
Politics / Lagos Records 322 Murder Cases In One Year – Police Commissioner by DonColz1(m): 12:11pm On Nov 29, 2013
Thirty nine police officers were also killed in
shoot-outs during the period.
There were 322 murder cases recorded in
Lagos State in the past year, the
Commissioner of Police in the state, Umar
Manko, said on Thursday.
Mr. Manko spoke at the state’s seventh town
hall meeting on security in Lagos.
He said that 126 of the cases were recorded
between November 2012 and April 2013,
and the other 196 from May to October,
2013.
The commissioner also said that the state
recorded 54 robbery cases, adding that 146
robbers died in shootouts with the police
while 472 robbers were arrested.
“We unfortunately lost 39 of our officers
during encounters with these criminals
within the period,” Mr. Manko said.
He said that 390 arms were recovered and
16,034 ammunition seized.
Mr. Manko said that the year was a tough
one for criminals as the notorious ones and
kidnappers were either killed or nabbed.
He cited the arrest of an alleged notorious
robber, one Abiodun Ebenezer, otherwise
known as Godogodo, who had terrorised
the state for 14 years, as a major
breakthrough.
The commissioner commended the state
government for supporting police
operations through the provision of vehicles
and other logistics.
He, however, said the command still needed
bullet proof vests and more vehicles to
perform optimally.
Mr. Manku also urged residents of the state
to co-operate with the police in fighting
crime by reporting suspected criminals in
their communities.
He also urged the reform of the state’s
criminal justice system to ensure conclusive
adjudication of criminal cases.
“Our criminal justice system should be
reformed in such a manner that would
guarantee faster and impartial dispensation
of justice to all concerned.
“I want to appeal to the Directorate of Public
Prosecution (DPP) to exercise constraint in
throwing away or discharging cases on the
slightest technical reason,’’ Manko said.
According to him, case files are referred to
the DPP not only to determine the culpability
of suspects but to ensure that justice is
done to parties.
“Where lacuna is noticed in police
investigation, the nDPP should draw the
attention of the police to the gap and also
suggest means of filling the chasm to
guarantee justice for all.
“Also criminal cases should be disposed off
with minimum delay and appropriate
punishment must be awarded at all times to
guarantee the sanctity of the rule of law,’’ he
said.
The state governor, Babatunde Fashola, said
that police officers deserved great
recognition for putting their lives on the line
to protect others.
He said that his government would continue
to motivate police officers in the state and
supply them with some of the things they
needed to perform optimally.
Mr. Fashola rewarded some police officers
for gallantry and dedication to service.
He also presented all the award recipients,
comprising junior and senior officers, N10
million for their efforts.

Politics / I Won’t Contest For Any Office In 2015-nyako by DonColz1(m): 6:39pm On Nov 28, 2013
The Governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako, has said neither he nor his son would contest for any elective office in 2015.
Nyako said this while addressing a crowd of supporters in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, on Thursday.
He also used the occasion to explain that his decision to dump the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in favour of the opposition All Progressives Congress, was to protest against the prevailing level of injustice and impunity in the PDP.
The governor had, along with four of his colleagues -Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto), Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara), Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano) and Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers)- on Tuesday, announced a decision to defect from the PDP into the APC.
Before now, there were unverified reports that the Adamawa State governor was positioning his son, Abdulaziz, to take over from him as governor in 2015.
Director of Press and Public Affairs to the governor, Ahmad Sajoh, clarified his principal’s position in a telephone interview with THE PUNCH, in Abuja.

Politics / NBA Doubts Inec’s Ability To Conduct 2015 Elections by DonColz1(m): 5:31am On Nov 27, 2013
The Nigerian Bar Association on Tuesday expressed doubts over the ability of the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct credible elections in 2015.
In a communiqué at the end of its National Executive Committee meeting in Nasarawa State, the NBA described the inconclusive governorship election in Anambra State as embarrassing and unacceptable.
NBA President, Okey Wali, SAN, read the communiqué at a press conference in Abuja.
The communiqué read in part, “The inconclusiveness of the said elections and the serious operational and logistical challenges that gave rise to the supplementary elections have created serious doubts in the minds of Nigerians regarding the preparedness of the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct acceptable elections in 2015.
“The NBA views as very embarrassing and unacceptable the inconclusiveness of the Anambra State governorship election, occasioned by operational and logistic challenges in an election supervised by six national commissioners, 15 Resident Electoral Commissioners and a galaxy of permanent staff from the contiguous states.”
The lawyers’ body noted that there were highly compromised officials within the electoral commission and called on the relevant authorities to immediately arrest and prosecute those involved in the irregularities that marred the Anambra poll.
It added, “The NBA is also concerned that there are still apparently highly compromised officials within the Commission and these officials have been playing critical roles in the conduct of elections in Nigeria.
“All the officials identified to have compromised their oath of office and official functions in the conduct of the Anambra governorship election should be arrested and prosecuted in proper constitutional courts.”
The association urged INEC and the National Assembly to speed up the promulgation of the Electoral Offences Commission Act, which is expected to deal with the arrest and prosecution of electoral offenders.
Also, NBA said INEC “must carry out a surgical operation of its processes and procedures.”
“It must tackle frontally the recurring challenges of operational and logistic failure ahead of the 2015 elections. INEC must also intensify continuous voters registration and weed out the fraudulent names that are self evident in the current register, as this is fundamental to the credibility of future elections,” the communiqué added.
The association further advised all the political parties and candidates who contested the November 16, 2013 governorship poll in Anambra State to “carry out their protests within the ambit of the law and the Constitution.”
“The complaints, petitions and grievances relating to the election must also conform with the provisions of the constitution and the Electoral Act,” it said.
In the same vein, the NBA endorsed the proposed National Dialogue/Conference on the condition that its report “shall be final, binding and validated by Nigerians through a referendum.”
The communiqué explained that the association had constituted a National Conference and Constitutional Review Committee to articulate its positions, firstly on the report of the Presidential Advisory Panel and the National Dialogue/Conference proper.
NBA also condemned the decline in budgetary allocations to the judiciary.
It noted, “A situation where budgetary appropriation to the judiciary is dwindling while that of the other arms of government is burgeoning cannot be right.
“Statistics have shown that funding from the Federal Government in the annual budget has witnesses a steady decline since 2010, from N95bn in that year to N85bn in 2011, then N75bn in 2012, and dropped again in the 2013 budget to N67bn.”

Politics / CBN To Ditch Tougher Polymer For Paper Banknotes by DonColz1(m): 2:30pm On Nov 26, 2013
LAGOS – The Central Bank announced it will revert to paper banknotes, in a policy switch bucking a growing trend around the world for tougher polymer-based currency.
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) signed a deal in 2006 with Australia’s Securency International to print lower more-circulated units of the naira in polymer, while higher denominations were kept in paper form.
But six years down the line — and after allegations that the manufacturer bribed foreign officials to secure contracts, including in Nigeria — the CBN said it was being forced to reverse the policy.
“Polymer has been on a test run since 2007. This explains why we did not go the whole hog by printing all the notes in polymer,” central bank spokesman Ugochukwu Okoroafor told AFP.
“We only used polymer for N5, N10, N20 and N50, while N100, N200, N500 and N1,000 are in paper form.
“We soon discovered that the (polymer) notes easily fade out because of our peculiar hot climate in Nigeria… making them look tattered when in use over time.”
Earlier experiments indicated that the polymer-based notes, which are in use in 23 countries around the world, including Australia, could last longer than traditional cotton-paper notes.
But Nigeria’s central bank said there had been a public outcry about the poorer quality of some of the new currency in circulation.
Securency International was reported to have supplied 1.9 billion of its Guardian brand polymer-based notes to Nigeria between 2006 and 2008.
In the wake of the bribery claims, the Reserve Bank of Australia sold its 50 percent stake in the firm.
Innovia Security, which bought out Securency International earlier this year, said it did not comment on clients or their business but added that a number of countries with hot and humid climates used their product.
“We have had no issues of premature ink wear or colour fading in these markets,” a spokesman said in an emailed statement.
‘Policy somersaults’
Nigeria, whose economy is predominantly cash-based, is looking to increase people’s use of electronic payment methods such as credit cards, online trading and introducing cashpoint machines in a bid to try to reduce the amount individuals carry around at any one time.
However, there are concerns that switching back to paper notes is a sign of a lack of a coherent policy.
“My concern is that Nigeria is fond of policy somersaults,” said Moruf Akamo, a former banker.
“What becomes of the initial investment in the polymer technology, considering that the notes have been in circulation for only six years after their adoption in 2007?”
Akamo said the CBN should have done more research to ascertain the feasibility of polymer notes before starting the project.
“Why is Nigeria going back and forth? It’s time our policy makers got their acts together and do what is right for this country,” he said.
Yemi Adegbola advised the central bank against spending money to print paper notes, which can degrade quickly with daily handling and the tropical climate.
“I can’t see any logic in going back to paper notes,” said Adegbola, a treasury manager at a commercial bank in Lagos.
“The trend worldwide is to embrace polymer. I wonder why Nigeria’s case is different?” he added, claiming that polymer was less susceptible to forgery.
“It’s not easy to fake polymer notes like paper notes,” he said.
Ufoma Okeke, a 25-year-old business administration student, said the CBN should not waste scarce resources on paper banknotes.
“Nigeria is broke. The states are finding it difficult to pay their bills. We can better utilise our limited resources rather than waste such on a white elephant project,” she cautioned.
The CBN, however, said the switchover, likely from the middle of 2014, would not be a drain on the country’s finances and would be gradual.
“What we have decided is to switch over to paper notes when we next want to print naira notes,” said Okoroafor.
“When the polymer notes in circulation become tattered and ready to be disposed of, we will start the printing of paper notes.”
New paper notes will be printed locally by the state-run Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company rather than abroad, he added.

Sports / I’m Not Afraid Of Sack – Keshi by DonColz1(m): 4:10am On Nov 26, 2013
Stephen Keshi insists he is not worried he could be sacked before the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Under Keshi’s guidance Nigeria reached next year’s finals after a 4-1 aggregate win over Ethiopia in the play-offs.
But the former Super Eagles captain has twice before missed out on the tournament after a successful qualification campaign.
From left: Super Eagles Assistant Coaches, Ike Shorunmu; Daniel Amokachi and Head Coach, Stephen Keshi, at a media chat on 2014 Fifa world cup qualifier between Nigeria and Ethiopia, in Abuja recently.
In 2002 Keshi was assistant to Shuaibu Amodu when Nigeria qualified for the World Cup, but the pair were sacked and replaced by Adegboye Onigbinde before the showpiece in South Korea and Japan.
Four years later Keshi experienced a similar fate when he was sacked by Togo ahead of the 2006 World Cup in Germany despite having guided them to the finals for the first – and to date only – time in their history.
Keshi could therefore be forgiven for feeling nervous history could repeat itself once more, but the 51-year-old is philosophical about the nature of football.
“This job is all about hiring and firing,” Keshi told BBC Sport. “When I was sacked in 2002 it came as a terrible shock but that is life, we all moved on because you can’t keep living in anger and disappointment.
“We are talking about Nigeria here, so you never know what may happen.
“But what is important right now is that we are only focusing on what lies ahead which is preparing my players and nothing else.
“You can’t distract yourself with what might happen or could happen. We’ve achieved beyond some people’s expectations but the rebuilding exercise continues.
“I don’t live in fear [of getting the sack]. To be honest, it is just a waste of energy, it is energy-sapping.”
Keshi has had a stormy relationship with his employers, the Nigeria Football Federation, since leading an inexperienced side to the Africa Cup of Nations glory in South Africa at the start of 2013.
Back in February he decided against resigning from his post only hours after leading the country to their first Nations Cup title since 1994.
He and his assistants are owed seven months’ salary and Keshi has been paid only two months’ salary since he led the Super Eagles to that title 10 months ago.
Keshi feels the situation is disrespectful, unacceptable and has publicly criticised the NFF for failing to pay him his salary arrears.
While the Nigeria sports minister Bolaji Abdullahi has chastised him for taking the matter to the media, the former Togo and Mali coach has decided to focus on the task ahead.
“We have the CHAN tournament in South Africa to prepare for as well as focus on improving the team in friendlies,” Keshi said.
“You have to keep looking forward. We are building a team that Nigerians will be proud of and there is still room for improvement.”
Keshi is the first black African coach to have won the Nations Cup trophy in 21 years and the only African coach to have qualified two nations to the World Cup tournament.
Meanwhile, Keshi says he is stunned to hear top officials proposing to employ a foreign coach to assist him during the World Cup.
“I don’t need any foreign technical assistance to guide the Super Eagles to perform well at the World Cup so if one is suggested I will politely reject the offer because I already have capable assistants working with me,” Keshi said.
“Let them (those clamouring for it include the NFF) provide us an enabling atmosphere and requirement and we shall get the job done in Brazil. We are not saying we shall win the World Cup but we shall make an impact.”

ABUJA — The Federal Government, yesterday, condemned the new conditions which Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, insists must be met before the five-month old strike could be called off.
The three conditions were payment of four months salaries, which accumulated during the period of the strike; immediate implementation of the N1.2 trillion offered by the government to public universities, starting with the release of N100 billion this year and the balance of N1.1 trillion to be spread over five years from 2014.
The union also demanded that the salary arrears must not be paid in piecemeal.
These were some of the resolutions reached by members of the National Executive Council, NEC, of the union that met in Kano on Friday.
Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, condemned the new conditions but assured that he would present them before President Goodluck Jonathan.
EBSU breaks ranks, recalls students
Meanwhile, the management of Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, EBSU, yesterday ordered lecturers and students of the institution to return to classes following the inability of ASUU to end its strike.
A statement by the Registrar of the institution, Mr. Sam Egwu, stressed that the institution had resolved to resume academic activities regardless of the ASUU-FG dispute, adding that academic activities would resume in all the campuses of the institution from today, Tuesday, November 26.
EBSU chapter of ASUU however, said that lecturers would not return to classes until their demands were met in line with the position of its national body.

Politics / Ngige, Nwoye, Ubah Can’t Win Election In Anambra —obi by DonColz1(m): 3:46am On Nov 26, 2013
The Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, on Monday in an interview with State House correspondents in Abuja said those who were prevented from rigging the inconclusive November 16 governorship election in the state were the ones now crying foul over the conduct of the poll.
The governor said that if the election was held 10 times, the All Progressive Grand Alliance would win.
But the All Progressives Congress challenged the governor to back his claim with evidence, while the Labour Party dismissed Obi’s claim.
The APC governorship candidate, Dr. Chris Ngige; his counterpart for the Peoples Democratic Party, Tony Nwoye; and Ifeanyi Uba of the LP had called for the cancellation of the election.
They called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to organise a fresh election in the state.
But the commission had fixed November 30 for a supplementary election.
Obi on Monday boasted that he could go anywhere to declare that he did not rig the election in favour of the APGA candidate as being alleged.
Obi said, “Let me tell you, in the election in Anambra State, I can go to any where as a Christian and tell you there was no issue of rigging.
“Those who wanted to rig were prevented from rigging and they are now crying. Go to the people of Anambra State, if you repeat that election 10 times, they will never win.
“What are they even talking about cancellation? The regulation, the rules or the law says that you have to win at least 25% in two-third of the local governments and in Anambra’s case, it is 14 local governments.
“Only APGA can boast of that; we won in 18 local governments. The nearest, which is PDP, won in nine local governments, APC is seven. And I can tell you that even those results they are shouting about, their own are the one that is doubtful.
“Everything for APGA is real. I cannot be part of rigging; I don’t have money to pay for people. You know those who spend money and I am not one of them.”
But the Interim National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in an interview with one of our correspondents, said, “We have given eight reasons why the election should be cancelled. Let him give one reaon for what he said. He should go public with his evidence.”
On its part, the Anambra State Chapter of the LP dismissed Obi’s claims that it was those that were prevented from rigging the election that were complaining about its outcome.
The state chairman of the party, Mr. Sam Oraegbunam, told one of our correspondents that the governor was talking like a thief who would not admit to the fact he had stolen what belonged to someone else.
“It is obvious to every Anambra person and the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Jega that the election was flawed. And that is why they are having a supplementary election.
“You don’t expect him to say anything otherwise. You do not expect a thief to admit that he is a thief,” Oraegbunam said.
Also, a former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, described the November 16 governorship election in Anambra State as a bad omen for 2015 general election.
Abubakar, who spoke in Abuja at the premises of the Maidunama Sickle Cell Foundation on Monday as part of activities to mark his 67th birthday, urged INEC to buckle up.
He was responding to questions from reporters on the outcome of the controversial election, which was marred with several complaints and irregularities.
The former VP said, “The outcome of the Anambra State governorship election is a very serious disappointment and a bad omen for the 2015 general election. INEC need to do a lot of homework to correct the anomalies.”

The newspaper’s popular Thursday columnist, Abimbola Adelakun, was second runner-up with her article, ‘Blame it on the culture of poverty” published on July 19, 2012.

PUNCH’s Kwara State correspondent, Success Nwogu, was nominated for the News Agency of Nigeria prize for Agriculture Reporting but he lost narrowly to Sina Fadare of the National Mirror.

Similarly, PUNCH cartoonist, Bennet Omeke, was the second runner-up in Editorial Cartooning category after losing out to Chukwuemeka Emenike of the National Mirror and Gabriel Erapi of the Daily Sun, who were the winner and the first runner-up respectively.

Ololade Olatunji of The Nation picked up two awards, the Anthony Enahoro Prize for political reporting, sponsored by Tell, and the UNICEF Child Friendly reporting prize. The Anthony Enahoro prize for Development Reporting, sponsored by Tony Iyare, went to Isioma Joseph of the National Mirror.

The Omobola Onajide prize for Television Reporter of the Year went to Adebayo Bodunrin of the Africa Independent Television for his work titled, ‘Subsidy War’. Superscreen’s Adenike Owoeye’s two entries in the category were first and second runner-up.

The CEO of Diamond Publications Ltd, Mr. Lanre Idowu, who dwelt on the state of the media in his remarks, said that DAME was designed to encourage media responsibility.

Idowu said DAME had some challenges but added that it would not sacrifice its integrity.

“We would not look for money from just anywhere. We would not look for money anyhow. The integrity of the brand must be protected because it is for professionals,” Idowu said.

He lamented that the quality of reporting by the current generation of journalists was on the decline. In order to address the ugly trend, Idowu said DAME was going to use the funds that were provided for the sponsorship of some categories for the training of journalists.

He said the affected categories would be those in which no winner emerged. He noted that there was no award for some categories this year because they lacked outstanding entries.

There were no awards for sports reporting, health reporting, news magazine of the year, television commercial, radio presenting, press advert and radio commercial.

Six women and 15 men served as judges at this year’s awards. They included the Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Caleb University, Prof. Nosa Owens-Ibie; Dr. Bisi Olawunmi of the Department of Mass Communication, Bowen University; Executive Secretary, Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria, Mr. Feyi Smith; a former Permanent Secretary and former editor at the Daily Times, Mrs. Agbeke Ogunsanwo; former Editor-in-Chief of The Guardian, Mr Femi Kusa; and Editorial Page Editor of the Sun, Mrs. Wale Sokunbi.

Politics / PUNCH Is Newspaper Of The Year Again by DonColz1(m): 5:34am On Nov 25, 2013
With accustomed flourish, Nigeria’s most widely read newspaper, PUNCH, has again confirmed its preeminent position in the country’s newspaper industry.

At the 22nd Diamond Awards for Media Excellence awards in Lagos on Saturday, your darling newspaper swept all the top prizes, winning seven of the 12 available prizes and leaving only five for other newspapers to share.

PUNCH beat the National Mirror, which won three prizes in all, and The Nation, which won two, to emerge Newspaper of the Year. The top prizes won by PUNCH were Editor of the Year, Press Reporter of the Year, Judicial Reporter of the Year, the Action Photography award, Best Editorial Writing award and the Informed Commentary award.

PUNCH’s outstanding outing at the awards, an annual celebration of journalistic excellence, is reminiscent of the newspaper’s feats at all the country’s foremost journalism awards in the last four years.

PUNCH is the country’s current holder of the Newspaper of the Year and Editor of the Year prizes of the country’s two foremost journalistic awards – DAME and the Nigerian Media Merit Awards.

PUNCH had won DAME’s Newspaper of the Year award last year, and for the fourth time, after beating The Guardian and National Mirror to distant second and third positions respectively. In the same year, Nigeria’s most widely read newspaper also won the Newspaper of the Year prize at the Nigerian Media Merit Awards, for the second year in a row.

During the Saturday event, which started around 8pm at the Sheraton Lagos Hotel and Towers, Ikeja, DAME also gave lifetime achievement awards to two veteran journalists, Mr. Felix Adenaike and Mrs. Omobola Onajide.

Mr. Adenaike, one of the country’s most distinguished journalists, is a former Chief Executive Officer and Editor-in-Chief of the defunct Sketch newspapers, and also a former Editor-in-Chief of the Nigerian Tribune. Mrs. Onajide was the first Nigerian woman to work in a television newsroom and the first General Manager of the old Midwest Television.

PUNCH’s Controller, Publications, Mr. Adeyeye Joseph, the editor of the newspaper in 2012, the year reviewed, beat Steve Ayorinde, a former editor of the National Mirror, to win the Nigerian Guild of Editor’s Prize for Editor of the Year. Joseph had also won the prize last year.

The newspaper’s Editorial Board, which has won critical acclaim for its hard-hitting pro-people editorials won the Tunji Oseni Memorial Fund prize for Editorial Writing. Its winning entry was an editorial, ‘13 years of democracy and despair’, published on May 29, 2012. The prize came almost a year to the date that the newspaper’s editorial board had published one of the most shared and widely discussed editorials in the country in 2012.

The prescient editorial, Jonathan Spendthrift: Enough is Enough, had flayed the Goodluck Jonathan administration for its extravagance.

PUNCH’s serial award-winning journalist and Editor, Sunday PUNCH, Toyosi Ogunseye, won DAME’s Sam Amuka Media Fund prize for Press Reporter of the Year. Ogunseye’s winning entry was a three-part story titled, ‘The rich also cry: A tale of deaths and diseases in a heavily polluted upscale estate.” To clinch the prize, Ogunseye beat Sam Oluwalana of National Mirror and Lucas Olumuyiwa of Tell.

Earlier in the year, Ogunseye’s story had won the Health Prize in the CNN African Journalist of the Year awards held in South Africa. Only last month, Ogunseye had also emerged runner-up Best Young Journalist from the Developing World at the United Kingdom Foreign Press Association’s Media Awards.

Of the three journalists nominated for the DAME prize in Judicial Reporting, two were PUNCH journalists. They were PUNCH’s current outstanding employee of the year, Eniola Akinkuotu, and the newspaper’s Judiciary Correspondent, Adeyemi Adesomoju. But in the end it was Adesomoju, who picked up the Justice Omotayo Onalaja Prize for Judicial Reporting. Adesomoju’s winning entry was ‘One day in court, life in jail’ published on June 25, 2012. Akinkuotu, whom PUNCH had rewarded with a brand new car for his emergence as the company’s outstanding employee of the year, emerged first runner-up, beating Francis Famoroti of the National Mirror to third place.

PUNCH also had two nominations in the Action Photography category. The newspaper’s Photo Editor, Olusegun Bakare, and photojournalist, Adegoke Famadewa, were nominated alongside Ezekiel Adeparusi of the National Mirror.

However, it was Bakare’s photograph of a physically challenged man being assisted during the January 2012 subsidy protest in Lagos that won the prize. Famadewa emerged second runner-up with a June 1, 2012 shot of a tanker fire that killed two persons and razed 10 trailers.

Your newspaper also had two nominations in the Informed Commentary category. PUNCH’s Friday columnist, Prof. Ayo Olukotun, won the Alade Odunewu prize for Informed Commentary with his piece titled, ‘Wanted: An alternative national honours system’.

Politics / We’re Committed To Creation Of Ibadan State – Akinjide by DonColz1(m): 8:26am On Nov 24, 2013
Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief (Mrs) Olajumoke Akinjide, has reiterated her commitment to ensuring the creation of Ibadan State anytime new states are to be created in the country.
Akinjide spoke in Ibadan on Saturday, shortly after she was decorated alongside Senator Olufemi Lanlehin; Mr Seyi Makinde and others, with a merit award of excellence by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba (Dr) Samuel Odulana, through the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII).
She said Ibadan deserved to be given a full-fledged state as one of the regions that were created since the colonial era but were yet to become full states, assuring the people of the state of her commitment to pursuing the clamour on the national scene.
The minister also disclosed that the Federal Government would soon begin the dualisation of Akaran-Ijebu Igbo Road, an interstate road that traverses Oyo and Ogun states, when the reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan Highway is completed.
She commended the Federal Government for its impact that was being felt in Oyo State through a number of projects ongoing and forthcoming, particularly the privatisation of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, adding that a better future awaited the people of the state in President Goodluck Jonathan’s government.
“The people of Ibadan should be ready to invest in Ibadan because the Federal Government has provided the enabling environment and infrastructure as it is done in great cities of the world, it is left for the state government to be investors-friendly and to attract investors.
Asked what the award meant to her, she said “as you can see, I am very delighted to be recognised by my own people and in my own native city. So, I feel elated and encouraged because such recognition as this gives me more fuel to do more in service to humanity.”
