and you OP.... you have been warned, look around you, if most of the mechanics around you only specialise in Toyota & Honda, don't buy a Peugeot!!!
cos he's going to troubleshoot your french car the Japanese way, it usually doesn't end well! especially the electrical part!!!

But if you've got competent peugeot specialists and you're ready to maintain your car the oyinbo way, U can then buy your 407 or 406 or whatever...afterall that car was produced some 15years ago and you still bought it in almost mint condition. so it's up to you to extend the mint state or carzeemise ur car.

I'm a proud owner of a 607,406 & 206. I have passion for the brand & I'm paying the good price... so I am going to rate the 406 higher than the 407 based on my personal experience. You don't want to be travelling Nigerian roads with a 407.

To your post, I have used both cars and I currently use the 407. As you are inexperienced with Peugeot cars, I will advise you to go for the 406 D9 (phase 2) with EW10 engine and manual transmission.

I said the above because if you are not knowledgeable about Peugeot cars, you may abuse the 407 which can cause you expensive repairs. 407 is very sensitive. Both cars parade the same engine type.

For your information, when I am done with my present 407, I will sell it and buy another 407.

Among the two Peugeot brands, I wud advice u to go with 406.
Manufacturer standpoint, 406 was a success throughout its production period and it made so much sales, reason attributed to its relative reliability, performance and less errors.
If u recall back in d days, 406 was a Nigerian government vehicle and there was no convoy u won't find it in. It really had its glory days and I got to develop my admiration there.

407 on the other hand was introduced to replace the 406 brand. But it was a woeful failure. Too many glitches, consumer complaints, and the personality was lost. Reasons why it didn't gain acceptance and besides, the competition was tough.

Users of 406 had always praised it for its outstanding AC, remarkable fuel economy, top notch security, engine reliability (esp. the EW10 engine. Its a monster on long journeys), car is surprisingly spacious despite its smallish look.
I also hear that the manual transmission is better to go for bcoz its the least problematic.
