The issue of Bakassi have trended for years in the West African region between Nigeria and Cameroun over the oil rich region but the Former Governor of Cross River state disclosed how France would have gone to war with Nigeria over the oil rich region.

Speaking at the 60th birthday lecture in honour of Justice Charles Archibong (rtd) held in Lagos, Duke said any attempt to ignore the International Court of Justice, ICJ, judgement would have been disastrous for Nigeria. He said: "France would have wiped us out.


Cameroun is still a protectorate of France and has a defence pact with France. And France is duty bound to honour that pact, even though it has a lot of investments in Nigeria.
"The French President made it clear to us that it has put on alert its military and showed us the entire position of our military and exactly where we were and our daily movements.

"If we engaged Cameroun in war, France would have wiped us out. We tried to liaise with the Chinese and the Russians, but America made it point blank that where the British stands that is where they stand.

We were ready to table it before the Security Council, but they were not ready to take it.''

The former governor said after the ICJ judgement, Obasanjo tried to remedy the situation by seeking protection from Britain and United States, but they were not ready to assist.

Duke also said Camerounian President, Paul Biya, snubbed former President Olusegun Obasanjo when the latter visited him over the Bakassi issue.

The former governor said Obasanjo and his entourage were kept waiting for about three hours before they were grudgingly attended to by the Camerounian president. He said a lot of meetings were held behind the scene to resolve the issue, but the Camerounian leader refused to cooperate.

Duke said it was later discovered that the reason Obasanjo was snubbed was due to an earlier confrontation between Biya and former Military Head of State, the late General Sani Abacha over the issue. He said: "No one questions the ancestral ownership of Bakassi. Behind the scene there were lots of works, lots of meetings that went on. The problem of Bakassi did not start with the civilian administration; the case actually went to court in 1996, even before we were sworn in into office in 1999. "There was this famous world tour by President Olusegun Obasanjo.

One of the places we visited was Cameroun, we arrived at the airport, we met President Paul Biya who was seeing-off another leader, but he snubbed us. "He left us at the airport for over three hours. We were there and the embassy staff did not know what to do. Grudgingly, he met with us, and lectured us on Bakassi.

Later on, we found out that he was reacting to an earlier confrontation he had with late General Sani Abacha. "We thought we could settle the matter out of court, because we knew we should never have gone to court in the first place, we don't stand a chance. But, we thought we could settle it out of court, but Cameroon was adamant. "We took the matter to the African Union, AU, the union tried to facilitate peaceful resolution of the matter, but it couldn't work."

After the previous Edo boy, Daniel Oikhena several weeks back stowed in a plane from Benin to Lagos, i guess other teenagers have also been planning to do the same but couldn't stow as three teenagers were caught after planning to stow on Tuesday.

The Commissioner in charge of the command, Waheed Salau, handed over the teenagers, Joshua Amadi, 14, from Ebonyi State; Onyedikachi Ukpabio 14, Abia, and Lateef
Popoola 13, Ogun, to their relatives.

One of the teenagers, Onyedicachi Ukpabio, an SS1 student, said they had not decided where to travel to before they were arrested.

He added that they were just at the departure hall when they saw a man, who approached them and asked them if they had a BlackBerry charger to enable him charge his phone.

Ukpabio said they told the man that they didn't have one, before his friend, Amadi, asked the man if he knew the plane going to Malaysia.

He said the question made the man to alert the airport police and got them arrested.

Popoola, a primary three pupil from Ogun State, was caught on Wednesday, a day after Ukpabio and Amadi were arrested.

Experts have described the discovery in China as ­“stunning”.

Palaeontologist Professor John Long of Flinders ­University, Adelaide, said: “It finally solves an age-old problem about the origin of modern fishes.

“We now know prehistoric fish gave rise to the modern fish fauna as we know it.”

Fellow palaeontologist Matt Friedman added: “It will take time to fully digest the ­implications of such a ­remarkable fossil, but it is clear that a major reframing of our understanding of early jawed vertebrate evolution is now in full swing.”

The fish they found would have been eight-inches long and armour plated.

It is the most primitive vertebrate discovered with a modern jaw, and includes a bone found in humans.

British fossil expert Matt Friedman said of the creature: “It is the deepest branch of our family tree that bears the kinds of jaw bones found in humans.

“This is an unexpected discovery that inverts ­schoolbook teaching on the evolution of bony skulls.

“Up until now it had been thought the anatomical ­peculiarities of bony fishes, the group that would ­eventually give rise to human beings, are specialisations that arose later in vertebrate evolutionary history in our own bony fish lineage.

“But now that narrative has been turned on its head.”

The fossil was shown off by Professor Min Zhu, one of the team of scientists who found it, in his Beijing laboratory.

3. Could I have accidentally ‘peed’ the bed during séx?

She advises strengthening your pelvic-floor muscles through Kegels (seriously, they work!) and consider bringing this up with your gynecologist or a women’s health physical therapist.

4. Should I be worried if I bleed after séx?

If the blood is a light color, and this happens only once (especially after a strenuous romp), then it’s probably just the result of irritation or friction, Streicher says. But if it happens again or if there’s a fair amount of blood, then you should make an appointment with your gynecologist. It could be coming from the cervix, the uterus or be caused by an infection like chlamydia or gonorrhea.

5. Why do I sometimes laugh or cry uncontrollably during séx?

“séx is a neurological and emotional event,” says Debby Herbenick, a research scientist at the Center for séxual Health Promotion at Indiana University. In other words, it’s intense, and getting unclad (physically and otherwise) with someone can trigger unexpected feelings. An emotional reaction could also be due to hormones, where you’re at in your menstrual cycle or fears you have about the relationship. You know yourself best: If you feel something’s not right, consider bringing it up with your partner or with a therapist.

While CNN was recording a tape, Obama was standing up after the event and asking the man next to him if he had given up smoking, but the man returned the question to him.

I'm scared of my wife."

In February 2011, First Lady Michelle Obama who is a campaigner for public health said that the president had not smoked for a year and that she was not giving him a hard time about the issue.

A lucky day for this boy who 'brilliantly' played dead to survive being killed in the Kenyan shopping mall attack led by the assumed islamist terrorist sect 'al shabaab'.

The boy said 'I suddenly heard gunshots and saw everyone running around so we lied down. I saw two people who were lying down and bleeding, I think they were hit by bullets'

Another mall employee Sudjar Singh also recounted how he escaped death, he said 'The gunmen tried to fire at my head but missed. At least 50 people were shot'.

Sadness is what would have filled their mother's heart, when the news would have reached her ears that her son killed her other son while fighting over trivial issue.

This incident happened on Monday Sept.16th at Bida road, Onitsha. A fight led to the horrible death and the cause of the fight is unknown. The brother who did this terrible thing is nowhere to be found.

Even when the owner was nominated for the Future Awards, I was one of the very first who congratulated him on-line despite the fact that I do not know him personally.

Nairaland is one of the best platforms on-line whereby one’s write-ups and sites are acknowledged; which is why a lot of Nigerian Bloggers and music sites choose to post their contents and links. The moderators will not only publish such articles; they would also move them to the front-page if it is “front-page worthy”. Also, they will boldly include the name of the site and the “click-able” back-link to it. Now, that’s fantastic, despite the fact that the site is a forum!

You will agree with me (for some of us who have on-line platforms) that building an online platform is challenging and tedious with time, resources, electricity, internet connection and communication posing itself as one of the greatest challenges. Being a young Nigerian Corps member, these challenges are further heightened by the near-rural setting in Niger State where I found myself contributing my quota in my Place of Primary Assignment (PPA). Yet, is it not better to do something worthwhile with what I have passion for as a Mass Communicator than to engage myself in “no-gloryfing” activities?

With bloggers and on-line writers like Linda Ikeji, Gistyinka, Ladun Liadi, Kemi Filani, Laila Ikeji and so on borrowing information from each other and editing them properly, it is rather ridiculous that a site which claims to be No 1 information site in Nigeria will just pull original content from another site, copy and paste it without any sort of referencing. We respect some of the most powerful media brands like Vangurd, Punch, Guardian, Thisday, Complete Sports, Encomium, City People and few others who are the usual go-to in term of authentic information and content. And so, despite re-writing their content, we still deem it fit to also acknowledge them in our write ups.

This niche is true, “Content owner is king and it’s good to pay due acknowledgement to who deserves it”.
