Health / Pornography & Pornography Addiction Gradually Becoming Active In Hospitals by DrEmekaO(m): 10:20am On Jun 23, 2018
Today, I believe it is high time to speak of this matter. Like a plague, a number of persons avoid this topic and rather maintain status quo. Pornography (or Pornography Addiction) is the plague I refer to.

Yea, you are probably adjusting in your seat, or you are trying to read this post in a solitude-rich environment or position, to avoid the peering Read on, because some things are rather said than left to eventually turn to monster.

Over the past three months, I have come across a number of pornography-related stories (or gossips) happening in a hospital/hospice environment.

Porn can include magazines, books, videos, movies, graphic novels, or any other medium in which sexual acts and or sexualized images are explicitly depicted.

Today porn is viewable at the click of a button by anyone with an Internet connection, though it also comes in the forms of literature, audio, magazines, and more. What effect has the ubiquity of porn had on us? Is it a harmless pastime for medical/health workers or a pernicious addiction?

It is a general knowledge that more men are consumers of pornography related materials than women. This applies in the hospital space as well. This have to do with the generally accepted notion that men are moved by ‘what they see’ and ladies are moved by ‘what they hear’.

But is Pornography Really an Active Addiction in Hospitals?

A Hospital should be a place where the ‘sick’ come to get well. This is a simplistic definition of what a hospital really is. So much more happen behind those walls, some noble and others, ‘less noble’.

Some female doctors have reported experiences where male doctors watch porn or bring porn materials onto hospital grounds. Of course, this does not mean that the male gender have a greater preponderance to consuming pornographic materials than the female sex.

A lot of medical doctors and health workers rely a great deal on the internet for a pastime, when they is no active work going on; like when there is no emergency to attend to, or when drugs have been given to in-patients, or even late at night, when the wards are quiet and cool.

The Internet remains the next port of call for professionals. Texting and chatting is a favorite pastime.

In the larger society, mobile penetration (ie internet access and use) have been increasing at over 84%, making Nigeria a mobile-first country. Personal inquisition on the subject matter have shown that medical doctors, nurses and other health workers rely heavily on pornography (mostly soft porn materials) to pastime in the hospital space.

By 2020, there will be 38 billion devices on the Internet of things; watches, kitchens, fashion and every facet of our lives will be online. This includes hospital and hospice care.

Even though there is little practical evidence that suggests negligence, on the part of hospital workers, stemming from the use of the pornographic materials, affecting patient care, pornographic addiction is a recipe that may precipitate poor care to patients and gradually transform medical/health workers to “Active Addicts”

The Truth and Facts About ‘Active Addicts’.

Porn addiction is considered a behavioral addiction that is characterized by an ever-growing compulsion to view pornographic content or material.

Pornography already exists and data has shown that whether it is viewed as a taboo or not, Nigerians are massive consumers of this forbidden fruit.

Although Medical and Psychiatric professionals do not treat the compulsion to view or use pornographic material as an addiction, the signs and symptoms of porn addiction are often very similar to those of Drug Addiction.

Pornography is indeed very dangerous. In any of its forms, it is a potentially addictive warped deviation from the true nature of sexual activities. Addiction to pornography and the resultant debilitating effects are its strongest actual downsides.

Signs And Symptoms of Porn Addiction

-Being unable to stop using porn or stop engaging in the behaviors associated with porn, despite repeated attempts to do so. Approximately 9% of viewers reported that they had made unsuccessful attempts to stop.

Experiencing cravings to view porn. Much like substance users report feeling strong urges to use drugs, porn addicts can experience strong urges to view porn.

-Becoming angry, hostile, or irritable when asked to stop using porn. Porn addicts may deny their porn viewing or be upset when loved ones request that they stop.

-Keeping all or part of one’s porn use secret from loved ones.
Porn addiction has been shown to lead to increased secrecy in relationships.

-Feeling as though one is living a double or secret life because of porn use. A person with a porn addiction may feel guilty or ashamed and work hard to hide his or her porn viewing from others.

-Continuing to view porn despite negative consequences, such as broken relationships or a job loss. Relationships where one partner is addicted to porn can lead to a reduction in intimacy, emotional distance, reduced sexual satisfaction, and an overall poorer quality of relationship. Being unable to abstain from porn during work hours can lead to disciplinary action or even job loss.

-Losing track of large chunks of time due to being absorbed in porn use. Porn addicts may spend much of the day viewing pornography. This can lead to porn becoming a priority, with everything else set aside in favor of viewing porn.

-Requiring increasing amounts or more explicit porn to gain the same satisfaction or thrill, similar to the development of a tolerance.

Like in some key operational indices in the hospital, medical and health workers are driving hard down the wrong path. Though it may seem pervasive and an unwritten writ of acceptance in the consumption of porn materials, the result will not be palatable for most.

A vibrant conversion against bringing pornography to the work place, especially a sacred work-place like the hospital setting should be discouraged and must be tagged a ‘taboo’.

Health / 15 Scientific ‘foods’ That Maintain Sound Health And Good Weight by DrEmekaO(m): 1:29am On Nov 09, 2017
Weight loss or gain keeps popping up across most social media trending conversations. A number of people keep making, or falling for, basic mistakes about this social topic. Quora user, Kim Johnson – Doctor, Physiologist, and certified body trainer, put down a beautiful piece of 15 scientific foods you must stick to if you are to maintain a good health and optimal body weight… I understand that some of the specifics may not apply universally to all my readers, but there is a tonne of lessons to be learnt from this beautiful piece. Just rejig it and stay healthy.

Hope this helps?!!!

1. Eat the foods you enjoy
Many people think that their food is more of their interest, except eating them, they understand that their weight will be under control. But Lisa Sasson, a nutritionist at the University of New York, said it is a farsighted remark. If you do not like the foods you do not like to eat, but instead you will be failing. Food is a delightful experience. If you exclude all the foods you like from your diet then you will not be able to do your work schedule.

2. Moderate amount
When you eat foods keeping in mind the weight control, a mental ingredient is added to the diet. If we are aware of the weight loss and the quantity of food we will win half of the war. You can avoid taking extra food. And the most effective way of controlling the weight is to eat a moderate amount of food.

3. Avoid restaurants
In order to maintain the quantity of food intake, do not eat more than one hand in one meal for a meal. And while going out of the house, take home-made food with you. Because if you eat in the restaurant you will be given calorie-rich foods more than you need.

4. Eat more than fiber and protein-rich foods
Fiber and proteins will keep you in full time. These ingredients are very small in candied and cooked foods. These are easily absorbable. That is why satisfaction is not achieved because of eating a bamboo chips after eating a foamy potato potato. If there is plenty of food then there is no danger of hunger.

5. Eat Mediterranean food
Studies have shown that so-called Mediterranean diet helps to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. And provides possible memory-related benefits. And in a recent study, with the planned eating habits, there is also a link between the risk of lowering breast cancer among elderly women. Olive oil, pasta, hammas, tomato groves salad are known as these Mediterranean foods.

6. Accept calories from food rather than drinks
Avoid drinks like juice and soda. Because the stored calories can store extra calories in your body. Studies have shown that weight loss is controlled by avoiding calorified beverages.

7. Be flexible
Flexible food planning is the key to keeping weight in control. Instead of eating the same food every day, keep the diversity in the diet all the time.

8. Eat easily eaten foods
The germs that you live in your stomach make an important role in the digestion of foods you eat. In a recent study, Swedish researchers discovered a mathematical formula for selecting food consistent with some stomach germs. According to this formula, one can easily select special digestible food for him. As well as keeping your weight under control, you can also be protected from some diseases.

However, this study is not final yet. Only in the initial stage. But in addition to any formula, eat healthy dairy products, vegetables, poultry, fish, eggs and oilseeds, if you want to learn healthy eating habit.

9. In addition to the trimmilage, the easy way to control weight
Avoid eating habits only if you are very hungry. This will eliminate the risk of ovulation. Another simple way to avoid overeating is to drink at least 16 ounces of water before 30 minutes before refresh food. Studies show that those who drink water before eating can reduce weight by 27 pounds more than those who do not drink water.

10. Do not go to the grocery store as hungry
A small study found that if one was hungry, he would buy more than one-third of the unhealthy food in general than the usual buyers while in grocery stores. So be careful not only about what you are eating but also about what you are buying.

11. Sleeping in adequate quantity at night
Along with the feeling of sleep, beware of the intense desire for food consumption. Studies have shown that if we do not sleep at night, our interest in eating fat and unhealthy foods increases. If we do not sleep properly then we become tired and we need extra strength. And that is why we are interested in taking gourmet and delicious but unhealthy foods.

12. Regularly breakfast breakfast
It is said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Proof of evidence has been found in the study, it is good to have digestion while playing breakfast regularly in the morning. And athletes always eat high protein, complex carbohydrate and low sugar foods.

13. No more snack after dinner
A brief study conducted on 29 young people found that they are taking less than 238 calories a day. When they were prohibited from taking any food between 7pm and 8pm. This has reduced their high fat and high calorie intake rates.

14. Avoid diet drinks
20% of Americans drink at least one soda daily. A study conducted from 1979 to 1996, found that people who drink soda regularly, their waist size is increasing by 75%, compared to those who drink irregular soda or do not drink soda at all.

15. Do not be hungry much
Avoid stay overtly hungry… Research have repeatedly shown that starvation do not help in weight lose, or in living healthy lives. Never stay too hungry.

Health / Benefits Of Sex During Pregnancy (no 3 And 7 Will Shock You) by DrEmekaO(m): 11:40pm On May 30, 2017
I uploaded a post earlier about sex during pregnancy and why it is advised. Fortunately here are nine reasons why pregnancy sex is not only healthy, but why it might be even better than before.

1. An easier labor and recovery.
Having an orgasm increases the contractions in your pelvic floor, which help to strengthen the muscles you’ll need for labor and after delivery.
“Once you’ve pushed your baby through those muscles, they’ll have an easier time strengthening up,” said Jeanne Faulkner, a registered nurse in Portland, Oregon and author of “Common Sense Pregnancy: Navigating a Healthy Pregnancy and Birth for Mother and Baby.”

2. Less bathroom breaks.
Feel like you always have to pee? Frequent trips to the bathroom, even leaking when you sneeze or laugh can happen when you’re pregnant. Plus, as your baby gets bigger and presses on your bladder, it can be even more uncomfortable. The good news is that the same muscles that you’ll be strengthening for your labor can also help with the flow of urine, said Tammy Nelson, PhD, author of “Getting the Sex You Want.”

3. Complication prevention.
According to a Danish study , frequent sex may help prevent pre-eclampsia. Researchers believe it’s because of a protein found in sperm that can regulate the body’s immune system. Yet because the cause of preeclampsia is unknown, it’s important to keep your prenatal visits and talk to your doctor about your risk.

4. Lowered blood pressure.
Although your blood pressure may be lower right after having sex, it’s only temporary so the cure isn’t sex all the time, Faulkner said. Since high blood pressure can be serious for both you and your baby, it’s important to work with your doctor on ways to prevent or control your blood pressure.

5. Better orgasms.
Since your body’s nerve endings are more sensitive, your nipples and clitoris are engorged, and there’s more estrogen drawing blood flow to your pelvis, it’s usually easier to achieve orgasm and they’re also longer and stronger, Nelson said. Plus, women who had trouble having an orgasm prior to pregnancy may now find they no longer do.

6. Improved self-esteem.
With all the changes that happen during pregnancy, it can feel that your body is no longer your own. Yet having sex can help restore your body confidence and positive feelings about yourself.
“For a lot of women, it’s a time in life where [sex] is a really important part of who they are, their relationship and how they feel,” Faulkner said.

7. Stress reduction.
Although pregnancy is usually a happy time, it’s normal to worry about things like work, finances and how your life will change after your baby is born. Oxytocin, the love hormone that your body releases when you have an orgasm, can help to negate some of that stress and also help you sleep better.

8. Improved connections.
Having frequent sex now will help strengthen the intimate relationship and bond you have with your partner and establish a healthy habit for the future.
“It’s important to connect with your partner now while you have time because you’re going to need that connection once the baby is born,” Nelson said.

9. Preparation for labor.
If you’re full-term or past your due date, having sex won’t put you into labor, but it can help your body prepare because semen contains prostaglandins which can help ripen the cervix, Faulkner said.

Education / Outbreak Of Ebola In Congo: See Solar Panel Test Kit For Detection Of Ebola by DrEmekaO(m): 6:00pm On May 15, 2017
Today, The World Health Organization confirmed the second case of Ebola Virus Disease...
This is simply an epidemic. African nations are already taking actions to prevent the spread into her territories. Of course Nigeria's Health Ministry have put all surveillance health teams at the borders and ports (air and sea ports) on red alert. Any suspected or actual case of the disease must be reported after established protocol is followed.

However, I recalled that during the last epidemic in Nigeria that saw Patrick Sawyer bringing the disease to us and numerous deaths in and across West Africa, I decided to follow the story keenly even before Nigeria was declared Ebola Free. After Nigeria was declared free by the WHO, a group of researchers invented a solar powered suitcase for prompt Ebola detection and diagnosis.

The mobile suitcase lab is operated with solar power and enables simple on-site diagnostics in remote areas without the need of an equipped laboratory.

The new detection method, a recombinase polymerase amplification technique, shortly RPA, is based on the rapid identification of viral RNA in oral swabs of infected persons at 42 degrees.

The mobile diagnostic kit facilitates detection of Ebola and other infectious diseases directly in the crisis areas. "In future, the diagnostic kit is also to be used for the detection of other viral infections." For example, Dengue virus, Chikungunya virus and Rift Valley fever virus. With this present threat, that future is NOW!!!

An Ebola infection case was detected after 30 minutes. The results of the field study have been published in the current issue of the journal Eurosurveillance.

Holla, glad to have you reading this post. An anonymous message came in my inbox requesting I put up a post on the centers that still have their application running for interns (doctors, pharmacists, radiographers, Lab Scientists etc). So I did some digging, and i was able to put up some of the internship applications currently running… could continue this if the requests keep coming in.

Health / Uni. Of Ilorin Teaching Hospital Doctors Embark On Protest...exclusive Photos by DrEmekaO(m): 12:39pm On May 12, 2017
Doctors working at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital have embarked on a peaceful protest in the hospital. The Doctors, yesterday took to the streets of the Teaching Hospital in Ilorin, Kwara State, to press home their demands.

Their protesting doctors carried cardboards and placards on which was outlined their demands and it includes full payment of the salaries owed them by the Federal Government since 2014, Government should cease paying their salary in parts, with some receiving only receiving 60% of the salary, all skippings and allowances be paid as well.

They also want the government to increase the salary of House officers in their hospital, which they describe as peanuts compared to the volume of work done by the House Officers.

One of the doctors we contacted, who do not want her name mentioned here, has this to say;

"The government should meet up with our demands. They should not renege this time around to avoid this cycle of strike. They are owing us arrears and we insist this should be cleared".

Family / Guys Or Ladies? Who Can Perform CPR Better? by DrEmekaO(m): 2:24pm On May 11, 2017
Now say the truth... Do you know what CPR is?
It is a medical acronym for Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation.

It is a procedure used in emergency condition where either the heart or the respiratory air tract fails to perform.

Example is when a drowning person is rescued. A CPR is usually done on the scene to save the person's life before doctors or nurses get to the scene.
So CPR is to be learnt by all. It involves lieing the victim in a certain position, chest compressions, and mouth-to-mouth breathing.

Now the big question is, in a Family who do you think would do this better? The Men or The Women.

Learn more about CPR in the link below...

Career / Nigeria Plans To Review Midwifery Practices by DrEmekaO(m): 1:40pm On May 11, 2017
The federal government is planning to upgrade the standard of midwifery practices in Nigeria by reviewing the training process and improving motivation for the professionals.

The Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole, announced the plan on Wednesday at a programme in commemoration of the 2017 International Day of the Midwife (IDM) in Abuja.

According to Mr. Adewole, a knowledgeable, skilled and motivated health workforce is an important catalyst to achieving Universal Health Coverage.

As such, he said, there is a need for pre- service training for health workers, which would involve regular curriculum review and provision of adequate funding.

In line with the plan, the minister explained that the government was reviewing the Midwives Service Scheme (MSS). The scheme was launched in 2009 with the aim of ensuring skilled birth attendants through the recruitment and deployment of midwives to underserved areas as frontline workers.

“Our plan is to modify the scheme based on lesson learnt to improve efficient service delivery in our drive to revitalize the primary healthcare services delivery in the country”, he said.

“Improvement on the training for midwives in the country is very crucial in service delivery, especially at the primary healthcare level which the Federal Ministry of Health has committed to revitalizing as the bedrock of the health system”.

Mr. Adewole noted that the National Health Policy considers primary healthcare as the framework to improve health services for all Nigerians, which include provision of health education, adequate nutrition, safe water and sanitation, reproductive health among others.

He said the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, NPHCDA, was established to provide strategic support for the development and delivery of primary healthcare, which include developing guidelines on the implementation of primary healthcare services and enforcing such guidelines.

Mr. Adewole said state governments were also expected to establish State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (SPHCDA) to directly oversee the implementation of primary healthcare services in the various states, stressing that the essence of the policy was to decongest the excess burden of consultations in the tertiary and specialist health facilities.

Also speaking at the event, wife of the Senate President and founder of WellBeing Foundation, Toyin Saraki, stressed the need for Government, NGOs and development partners to invest in capacity building for midwives and nurses.

The minister, while thanking the development partners especially UNFPA for strengthening the midwifery workforce over the years, commended Mrs. Saraki for supporting government’s initiative of providing quality maternal, newborn and child health services in the country through her NGO.

He wanted to know about the institutions in Nigeria offering Dentistry as an undergraduate course in school. I referred him to the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, MDCN Site.

I found this; the number of government approved universities legitimately offering that course as an undergraduate course are 9.

Like Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry is so sought after by unsuspecting applicants, that fraudsters play on this desperation to the detriment of the students.

With the proliferation of unapproved institutions claiming to be offering Dentistry, I hope this will help. I found this table on the MDCN official site. It shows institutions with full accreditation and those with a partial accreditation.

The MDCN regulates the activities of the activities of doctors and dentists alike in the country.

Now you know!!!

Health / Genotype And Blood Group: Learn Never To Forget The Difference!!! by DrEmekaO(m): 7:16am On May 11, 2017
Imagine I walk up to you and ask you this simple question, “What is your blood group?” What will be your answer? A Lot of times, most people I ask this question will retort sharply, “I am AA” or “I am not SS”. They go on to explain how they think the last test done confirms their answer; some even go as far as swearing that no body is a sickler in their household.

This, I notice is a common problem, even among the educated ones. The only group of people, I find, who would give a correct answer are pregnant women or nursing mothers. This is most likely because, as part of their routine ante natal care, is assessment of their blood group and genotype.

I hope to explain this two distinct concept, that have for a long time embarrassed many. Often, I have found myself also making this same mistake, but I hope to share some key things that make me decipher the difference in a split second.

Whenever I hear about Genotype, I think of the gene, normally in the nucleus, which is inside a human cell. The genotype is one of the factors that determines the physical appearance, phenotype, of a person. It is normally transferred from the parents to the offspring. This is why, a child may have some certain features of either or both of the parents. There are different genes for different traits. Genotypic manifestation, ie phenotype, is possible if the genes are in dominant or recessive pattern. I will pause here, so that you don’t mix up the next thing I am about to relay.

Blood group deals with just the red blood cells. These are proteins situated on the surface of a red blood cell. Think of it as blood group is outside a red cell while genotype is inside every cell.

Although there are different systems of blood groups, I just mention the two most popular – ABO blood group system and Rhesus factor system. An individual can either be Blood group A, B, AB or O.

When you check your lab result and it is written, your blood group is AB+, it simply means you have both antigen A and antigen B on the surface of your red blood cell. The (+) shows you are rhesus positive. This is exactly why people of blood group AB are called Universal Recipient.

O+ simply means that your red blood cell do jot have either antigen A or B on its surface, and the red cells are also positive to the rhesus factors. However, it should be noted that a person with blood group of O- is a known as a Universal Donor.

It can be confusion, I agree, but if you give this concepts a little more thought, then you would find it easy to interpret.

It is encouraged that every living person know his or her blood group and genotype. This knowledge could come in handy when you least expect it.
