Politics / We Must Plan A Nigeria Without Crude Oil – Osinbajo by DrinosBlog: 4:30am On Aug 05, 2017
The Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, on Friday said the government had to redefine a post-oil era in Nigeria, noting that the country must adjust to realities.

Osinbajo said this while delivering his speech at the Course 25 Graduation, National Defence College, Abuja.

The Acting President spoke on a topic, ‘The Battle has changed’.

Osinbajo said technological advancements and changing realities had helped the Boko Haram terrorists in the North-East to be able to spread their ideologies through the Internet and propaganda videos.

He noted that the Nigerian military, therefore, needed to be fortified with the cutting-edge technology to be ahead of the insurgents.

According to Drinosblog reports, He said,
“We have to redefine a post-oil Nigeria. With the changes and advancements in technology, we have no option but to adjust our realities to them.

There are now hackers who could do far more damage than conventional arms. Here, once degraded, the Boko Haram terrorists have resorted to cowardly acts of suicide bombing.

“Terrorists now have access to the quick release of propaganda videos, which was not possible before. Even with the Internet, fake news also influences election outcomes.

The battle has changed and our military must be at the cutting edge of technology. It is much easier to neutralise the terrorists than their ideology
“We must not wait until things have fallen apart before we show our people we care. We must prepare ahead before conflicts reveal themselves.”

The Senior Special Assistant to the Acting President on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, laid out Osinbajo’s speech in a series of tweets on Friday.Drinosblog Reports.

Romance / 10 Reasons Why You Are Still Single by DrinosBlog: 8:49am On Jul 31, 2017
There are two types of people in this world, those that are single and those that are not single.

For those that are single, you know the struggle; no one to share great times with, no one to gas you up when you post those fire selfies on Instagram, no one to ask if you've eaten or not , no one to chat endlessly with on Whatsapp, Facebook etc and never run of things to share, no one to cuddle on rainy nights when you feel cold and no one to share gist with.

There are actually more single people than those with partners according to me (DrinosBlog), these are the 10 reasons why:
1. Too choosy:
Being too choosy reduces the number of potential partners, obviously. And the more choosy one is, the higher the likelihood of being single for a while longer.

2. No one is asking
Another reason why some are single is because no one is asking. This is often because potential partners think they are already taken or because they're giving off a vibe of someone who is disinterested or unready.

3. Waiting to be successful
For some others, guys especially, the need to be successful comes before the search for bae.

4. Afraid of intimacy
For some reason, some people are single because they are scared and unwilling to open up themselves to the intimacy and affection that relationships are known for.

5. Trust issues:
Especially if a previous relationship ended terribly in a case of betrayal of trust, people tend to take their time before entering into another relationship, if ever.

6. Unsure of what they want:
There is also a class of single people who are single because of uncertainty. They can't tell whether or not they even want to be in a relationship; and there are those who want relationships but can't decide.

7. Recent breakup:
People are also single because they've only just broken up. They need time to heal from the hurt of their past relationship.

8. Confused
Confusion about love and other life issues is what makes some others remain single.

9. Unready:
Some are just bidding their time, working on themselves and their character. They are single because they are not ready for a relationship just yet.

10. Different reasons best known to you.

Feel free to drop your own..

Crime / Police Detain, Starve 7-month Pregnant Woman Over N50 In Lagos State by DrinosBlog: 6:44am On Jul 31, 2017
A pregnant pepper seller on Hassan Ogunlana Street, Ijaiye, Lagos State, has been traumatised after she was thrown into a police cell for reporting an assault on her.

The woman, Iyabo Taiwo, had lodged a complaint at the Meiran Police Station against a resident, identified simply as Simon, aka Best , who allegedly pushed her into a drainage channel.

Drinosblog learnt that the case was, however, turned against her because Simon was a relative of a senior officer at the station.

Our correspondent was told that Simon had bought some red peppers from the woman last Monday and was supposed to collect N50 change.

It was gathered that Taiye went to visit her ailing husband at a hospital the following day and did not open shop.
The woman said hardly had she arrived at the shop on Wednesday with fresh stock when Simon came to collect the change.

She stated that she told him to come back for the change, but he suddenly resorted to force and started taking her goods.

The 30-year-old woman, who spoke with our correspondent in Yoruba, said, “I explained to him that I had used all the money on me to buy peppers and begged him to give me little time to sell so that I will give him the change.

“But he dipped his hands into a basket to pack some peppers. So, I held his shirt. He freed himself from my grip and threw me into a gutter. I went to report at the Meiran Police Station and some policemen followed me to arrest him.

“On getting to the station, he spoke in English and Igbo with a police officer. Then, a policeman told me that some people beat him (Simon) and that I would be detained until they arrest those people. Simon was told to go.”

The woman said she spent over 24 hours in detention and was freed after members of a pepper sellers association she belonged to paid N4,500 to secure her bail.

She said, “I was locked up inside a cell. They didn’t give me food. I was feeling pains all over my body. Members of my association later contributed N4,500 before I was released in the evening of the following day (Thursday).

“My pregnancy is over seven months now. I have gone to do a scan at a hospital to know the condition of my baby. The result will be out on Monday (today).

“The Commissioner of Police invited me and some policemen to his office in Ikeja on Friday. He was angry with them and told them to refund the N4,500. They asked me to come for the money on Monday (today).”

A resident, who begged for anonymity, said shortly after Taiye was released on Thursday, Simon allegedly mobilised some thugs to beat two men, Ope and Muri Waheed, who cautioned him for asaulting the woman.

“Youths in the community confronted the thugs he brought and there was confusion everywhere. An elderly man tried to caution one of the thugs to no avail. On Friday, he came again with the thugs and they smashed bottles on the street.

“Some policemen came, but none of the hoodlums was arrested. The Divisional Police Officer of the station and the guy (Simon) that beat the pepper seller are Igbo. We also learnt that he has a relative at the station,” he added.

Waheed’s wife, Bose, told our correspondent that he (Waheed) was arrested on Friday and detained in the station.

“He didn’t know anything about the incident. They handcuffed him; his elder brother took food to him at the station. He was released on Saturday evening,” she added.

However, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, said neither the pregnant woman nor Waheed was detained.

He said the CP had intervened in the matter, adding that some policemen were being queried in respect of the case.

He said, “The Igbo man wanted to collect his change and she pleaded with him that she had not sold anything for the day. The guy was adamant. It was just a mere human misunderstanding. She was not detained from Wednesday to Thursday; that is not true. The case was not turned against the pregnant woman.

“All the parties involved have been invited and investigation is ongoing. Those that caused a breakdown of law and order have been arrested. The CP is aware; those officers involved are already undergoing investigations to know the police action as regards the incident. We will go to the scene to know what transpired.

“The provost of the command is investigating and if there was any misconduct as regards police action, we will deal with that departmentally.”

Crime / "Recent Killing In Ikorodu Not Likely To Be By Badoo Members" - Lagos Police by DrinosBlog: 6:32am On Jul 31, 2017
Read the press statement according to
Drinosblog reports below:-
Murder Incident reported in the early hours of 'Sunday 30th July 2017' where police operatives of the Lagos state command responded to a distress call at Oke Ota, Ibeshe, Ikorodu area of Lagos state.

Mobilizing to the scene where the police operatives found it extremely difficult to locate the house which was situated in a thick forest where it's remotely impossible for anybody to identify a dwelling house in the area.

Eventually arriving at the scene on foot, the house where a family of five was attacked, which is just a room & parlour with one open window and no visible form of security, it was reported that 3 died on the spot, (1) died while receiving treatment at the hospital and the last member is alive and responding to treatment.

As investigation commenced no visible trace of violence or clues linked to the cultist group was found. No stone was found at the scene. A case of murder is being investigated by police detectives, which doesn't fit in the modules of operandi of the cult group.

The Lagos state police command is using this opportunity to call on LCDA, CDA chairman, traditional rulers who may be aware of residents staying in isolated areas which are no longer safe to report/identify with the police in order to stop people from dwelling in insecure areas without proper social structures.

The command also wishes to inform members of the public to come forward with useful information to aid the police and not resort to jungle justice while an investigation is ongoing in order not to jeopardize the investigation that may lead to the arrest of the alleged suspects who are on the command's watch list.

Politics / 2017 Hajj: Osinbajo Inaugurates Airlift Of 79,000 Pilgrims by DrinosBlog: 4:27am On Jul 31, 2017
Acting President Yemi Osinbajo on Sunday started the process for the airlift of a total of 79,000 pilgrims who are travelling to Saudi Arabia for the 2017 hajj.

The first batch of pilgrims from the Federal Capital Territory were admonished by senior government officials and religious leaders during a ceremony that held at the departure lounge of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja to be good ambassadors of the country in Saudi Arabia.

Of the total number of pilgrims travelling for this year’s hajj, 60,000 are from various states of the federation and the FCT, while about 19,000 others were classified as those under private operators.

Osinbajo, who was represented at the event by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mohammed Bello, described the first airlift of pilgrims as the beginning of more work for NAHCON officials and those working in agencies at the airports where the exercise would hold.

He said, “The message of the government to the pilgrims is that you represent the largest single group of Nigerians that are leaving the shores of Nigeria to a foreign land within a very restricted short period of time. So, each of you is an ambassador of this country and we appeal to you to conduct yourselves as good ambassadors of Nigeria.”Drinosblog reports

According to Drinosblog reports, The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, NAHCON, Abdullahi Muhammed, said the ceremony at the NAIA marked the beginning of the 2017 hajj airlift exercise, adding that this year’s Hajj had special and peculiar challenges.

He said, “The challenge of the increase in the 2017 hajj fare has come, but with Allah’s guidance and support, a lot of Nigerians are able to make it for the hajj. As we speak, it will interest you to note that we are expecting over 60,000 Nigerian pilgrims that will perform the hajj under the state governments’ quota.

“And about 19,000 are also expected to perform the Hajj under the private tour operators. This number is unprecedented in view of the global economic recession which is not only affecting Nigeria but many other countries that will be performing the Hajj.”

The Minister of State for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, told the pilgrims not to travel with prohibited items to Saudi Arabia.

Politics / Will You VOTE PRESIDENT BUHARI To Remain In Power In 2019? by DrinosBlog: 9:58am On Jul 29, 2017
Muhammadu Buhari left Nigeria for London on May 8, 2017 for treatment of an undisclosed ailment.

He entrusted Presidential duties to Vice Presient Yemi Osinbajo , promising to return as soon as possible.

With rumours around the country that President had died a long time ago, it was good news when recent photos of the President in a happy mood began circulating the internet after a visit from some APC Governors in the country.

In fact political party rival PDP Governors described President Muhammadu Buhari recovery in London as a ‘miracle’.

We are banking on Buhari to return to Nigeria in good health soon and IF that happens, we have a question below for Nairalanders:

Politics / President Muhammadu Buhari To Return Next Week - Government Sources by DrinosBlog: 1:09pm On Jul 26, 2017
Federal government sources have said President Muhammadu Buhari will return from his medical vacation in the United Kingdom next week after being away from the country for 79 days.

But the sources who spoke under the condition of anonymity on Tuesday night, July 25, did not specify the date within the week when the president will be expected to return, Drinosblog reports.

One of the sources said: “We have been told to be on a standby for the return of Mr President next week. Everything is in place now for that.” Another source stated: “We are very very hopeful that Mr President will come back to Nigeria next week.

This is the only thing I can tell you for now.” The disclosure by the sources came hours after presidential spokesperson, Femi Adesina, told newsmen that he had no information about when Buhari will return.

“If anybody is giving a timeline, that person might have information that we don’t have yet. But the information at our disposal is that the president will return as soon as his doctors give him the go ahead,” Adesina said. recalls that President Buhari has been in the UK since May 7 on medical vacation.

During the period of his absence, some Nigerians, notably Governor Fayose of Ekiti state speculated that the president was critically ill or had become incapacitated. But these rumours were dismissed after a delegation of All Progressive Congress (APC) governors and officials visited the president at the Abuja House, in London on Sunday, July 23.

Speaking on the visit, the Imo state governor, Rochas Okorocha, said the president was very cheerful and has not lost any bit of his sense of humour.

The governor said the party delegation spent more than an hour with President Buhari over lunch, and that it was very clear from the discussions that he followed developments at home very closely.

Okorocha added that President Buhari was in good health and was completely unperturbed by the cocktail of rumours about his health. Meanwhile, seven governors were scheduled to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari in London on Wednesday, July 26.

This was confirmed by Garba Shehu who is the senior special adviser to President Buhari on media and publicity. Abdulaziz Yari who is the governor of Zamfara state and the chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum will lead the delegation that will meet with the president.

Celebrities / Justin Bieber Denies Claims He Cancelled His World Tour To Start His Own Church by DrinosBlog: 12:28pm On Jul 26, 2017
23-year-old Canadian singer, Justin Bieber has denied claims that he cancelled his world tour in order to start his own church.

The singer was questioned about his supposed religious calling as he headed out for sushi yesterday and appeared baffled at the suggestion.

He said: “ No, you already know the reason .”

Despite looking confused by the question, the 23-year-old appeared relaxed after announcing he has called off the remaining 14 dates of his Purpose World Tour.

The star was expected to play in locations including North America, Japan, Singapore, and The Philippines – but has cancelled them due to “unforeseen circumstances”, which believed to be stemming from the star’s “exhaustion”.

However following the news, sources claimed that Justin was looking at starting up his own church as part of his plan to get closer to God.

“I am led to believe that the real reason he has come off the road is because he wants to reconnect with his faith and he may be even planning to start his own church,” veteran showbiz reporter Richard Wilkins.

“We know that he was in the country (Australia) a few weeks ago having meetings and attending the big Hillsong Church convention that they had here,” said Wilkins.

“He’s very close to a lot of the Hillsong people. Whether he’s looking at teaming up with them in something of a more permanent situation or doing some sort of religious activity on his own – starting his own church – we’re not quite sure, but that’s the word from an inside source.”

Justin’s tour cancellation was confirmed on Monday via a post uploaded to his website.

Hope of early resumption for students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, (LAUTECH), Ogbomosho and Kogi State University, (KSU) Anyigba, who have been home for two years and seven months respectively may have been dashed following, what observers regard as ‘shadow chasing’ and hard stance by the governors, Sunday Independent investigations have shown.

While Oyo State government, over the week said the school would remain closed and that it will neither pay the accrued debt it owes nor open the university jointly owned by both Oyo and Osun State governments, until its management allows the accounts of the school to be audited, Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has banned the Academic Staff Union of the University (ASUU) accusing it of being used by his political opponents to frustrate all efforts at resolving the crisis.

The audit panel which was set up last month in LAUTECH reported that the institution had over 97 different bank accounts in almost all the commercial banks in the country which is not in line with the Treasury Single Account (TSA) policy put in place to promote transparency.

Addressing the student leaders of Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo, which was also closed down six weeks ago, in his office on Wednesday last week, the Oyo State governor, Abiola Ajimobi told the members of staff of LAUTECH to allow the auditing of the institution to be completed in the interest of peace.

“We appeal to the management and academic staff of LAUTECH to allow the consultants engaged to properly audit the institution’s account. We will not pay any money again until the books are properly audited. It is not by force, propaganda, mischief and innuendoes that they will get result but by positive engagement.

“There is nothing wrong in auditing the school, it is simply checking on what we have done so far, particularly the amount we have committed to the school. Why are they afraid of audit? We appeal to them to let the auditors do their job. And if the audit report requires us to pay more money, we will pay but the ones they have collected so far, they must also account for them.”

It was gathered that the Osun State government owed N5.327 billion, while Oyo government was indebted to the tune of N1.833 billion to the institution.

In banning the ASUU chapter of KSU last week, Bello had accused the leadership of ASUU of being used by his political opponents to scuttle every peace moves to ensure that they perform the duty they had signed to do.

“Apparently, there are certain forces from certain areas that were pushing them. That wouldn’t be my concern. But my concern particularly is that certain amount of demands that were put forward, among which is salaries, have been paid fully.

“Accordingly the Kogi State Government hereby make the proclamation and declare all activities of ASUU in KSU from today 19th, July 2017 proscribed,” he said.

But the National leadership of the union had described the proscription of ASUU by the governor as laughable, saying that what a rational person should do was to constructively engage the union leaders to ensure amicable resolution of the differences.

Professor Biodun Ogunyemi of ASUU described the action of the governor as laughable, alleging that what happened showed that the governor lacked the democratic credentials to be a state chief executive in democracy.

However, apparently disturbed by the recent governor’s remark and continuous havoc the closure of the institution will cause the country, the concerned parents and even the students of LAUTECH who have been denied the right to complete their university degree programmes like their counterparts in other institutions, the Alumni Association on Thursday took the matter to the senate.

Led by the chairman of the alumni association, Professor Adewale Sunday, the group urged the Federal Government, to provide intervention fund to the institution for immediate resumption of academic activities.

It also appealed to the Federal Government to initiate the process of resolving the ownership tussle of the institution as permanent solution to the crisis.

The Senate therefore promised to look into the issue and bring an end to the crisis soon. Addressing the delegates, the senate president, Dr. Bukola Saraki described the continuous closure as “pathetic and unacceptable.”

Saraki, through his Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Mohammed Isa, reiterated the commitment of the Senate to the quick resolution of the crisis.

“The Senate is touched by the ongoing 2-year strike at LAUTECH. Now that we have taken up this issue, we are not going to stop until action is taken. In the past week, I have had the opportunity to speak to the Minister of Education on the issue, and he has reassured me that efforts are being made to bring representatives of both governments together to resolve the ownership affair between the two states,” said Saraki.

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, however advised the Oyo and Osun State governments to set aside part of the newly disbursed Paris Club refunds for the reopening of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH, Ogbomosho.

Mr. Falana also called on the Osun state government to relinquish ownership of the troubled university as a long term measure, saying the state could not afford to ‘properly fund the university.’

He urged Oyo State government to be prepared to take over the ownership of the school and provide the needed funds for it, adding that the government could abolish its new university of technology and deploy the funds meant for it to LAUTECH.

Falana also urged the Attorney-general of Kogi State to enlighten the state governor, Yahaya Bello, to appreciate that the fundamental rights of Nigerian citizens to assemble and associate peacefully is constitutionally guaranteed and protected.

He argued that Mr. Bello “lacks the legal competence to proscribe a registered trade union like the Academic Staff Union of Universities.”

Meanwhile, a one-time female legislator from Oyo State who does not want her name in print has condemned the government’s decision to keep the school closed.

“Any time I think about the future of this country, I weep bitterly. If two state governments can find it difficult to finance one university, and begin to pass bulk on ephemeral things, then I guess we need to check up the level of the sanity of these so-called leaders. The students have been kept at home for two years and somebody is saying he is not bordered until one stupid account is audited? If the Federal government cannot intervene in this matter, then, we might have to go back to the drawing board,” she said.

Comrade Hassan Taiwo-Soweto, National Coordinator, Education Rights Campaign (ERC) also told Sunday Independent that Governor Ajimobi’s position is insensitive, callous and irresponsible.

His words: “If his children were schooling in LAUTECH, it is unlikely that he would take such a callous and irresponsible stance.

Ordinarily there is nothing wrong in auditing the account of the University. In fact as a public institution funded by tax payers money, this should be a periodic process and not something the government see fit to do because of the crisis the institution is currently enmeshed in.

But by using it as a condition for addressing the financial needs of an institution that has been under lock and key for over eight months with students unable to progress to the next class or graduate, is the height of callousness by an elected public office holder.

“The implication of the decision of the Oyo State governor is that LAUTECH students will continue to suffer at home. This is an unacceptable wastage of the time and lives of the students.

The Education Rights Campaign (ERC) condemns this stance and call on students and workers of the institution to embark on mass protests and demonstrations to indicate their rejection of the position of the Oyo State governor. The crisis in LAUTECH is a demonstration of failure of governance.

If two state governments cannot successfully fund an academic institution, then what exactly can they do successfully? Governors Ajimobi and Aregbesola should be ashamed that despite being in the same political party, they both are unable to resolve something as simple as funding a public institution.

Actually in a sane society, there is no reason why any of these two governors should continue to hold office for wasting away the lives of our youth,” he said.

Mr. Claude Fajemisin, one of the parents of the institution lamented on government’s insensitivity to growth of education in Nigeria. “Let them close down the school, period. Has it become a crime to send your ward to tertiary institution? My son has spent three years in the school and two years at home.

If I had sent him to learn a vocation, maybe he would have probably become independent today. I am a peasant farmer with meager income. When will this son begin to bring money for the parents when we don’t even know when he is going to graduate?” he said.

However, House Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila, on behalf of the Speaker, Mr. Yakubu Dogara said, “There are complications here because we run a constitutional democracy; your institution was established by two state governments and from your request, it is not that easy for the Federal Government to take over a state-owned institution because we run a democracy.

“But there are ways we can come in because the welfare of citizens is our primary responsibility and the issue of education is shared among the three tiers of government.”

Therefore, it is not certain when the students of LAUTECH would resume from two years of closure because the audit panel has 97 accounts to audit before the owners of the institution will sit on possibilities of reopening.

Similarly, the fate of students of KSU, Anyigba is still hanging in the air as Bello, who is believed to be fighting on all fronts, with the civil servants, who, some are said to be on half or quarter pay for years, lecturers and even political opponents, may not have the much-needed attention to resolve this crisis.
