Politics / My Government Will Punish Corrupt Officials, Buhari Insists by Drmlab(m): 6:35am On Feb 04, 2015 |
The Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Tuesday said any public official who betrayed the trust of Nigerians and illegally enriched himself under his administration would be made to face the full wrath of the law. He promised Nigerians that there would be no hiding place for corrupt elected officials, including governors and all other government officials in his administration. Buhari gave the assurance at the presidential rally held at the Pantami International Stadium, Gombe. He said, “We must do away with corruption as well as develop the Nigerian economy, if we are elected into office by the grace of God, any elected official that is elected or appointed to serve under me must be transparent, because if any of them embezzles public funds, he will face the consequences.” The presidential hopeful also promised to boost electricity supply in all parts of the country. He also pledged to revive moribund industries in order to address unemployment. “Our youths are suffering and walking round the streets without employment but we will strive to make them gainfully employed, so as to disengage them from vices that can destroy their future,” Buhari stated. The APC presidential candidate said he would also look into ways of collaborating with advanced countries to revamp the agricultural sector. He said schools would also be given a facelift and qualified teachers would be recruited. Also speaking at the rally, the National Chairman of the party, John Odigie-Oyegun, called on the Nigerian public to vote massively for the APC in the forthcoming elections to guarantee progress and development. He urged all party faithful to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards so as to have the opportunity to elect candidates of their choice. The party’s leader in Gombe State, Senator Danjuma Goje, described Buhari as the architect of change. He urged all supporters of the party to vote out the Peoples Democratic Party by turning out in large number on election days and also defend their votes by ensuring that the votes were counted in their presence. The governorship candidate of the party in the state, Alhaji Inuwa Yahaya, expressed optimism that the APC would win elections in Gombe State come February 14 and 28. The Gombe APC Presidential rally, which was the 34th in the series, was well attended and it ended peacefully. source: http://www.punchng.com/news/my-govtll-punish-corrupt-officials-buhari-insists/ |
Politics / Youths Attack President's Campaign Team In Bauchi by Drmlab(m): 2:27am On Jan 23, 2015 |
Angry youths in Bauchi on Thursday twice pelted President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign team with stones and water sachets. The broom-wielding youths first blocked the motorcade of the President on Nasarawa Street as it made its way to the palace of the Emir of Bauchi, where Jonathan and his team were going to pay homage. It took the combined efforts of soldiers and riot policemen to disperse the youths, who were chanting anti-Peoples Democratic Party slogans and extolling the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj.Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) Along the popular Ran Road, some of the youths, who were singing “Sai Buhari” disrupted business activities. In the President’s motorcade were Vice President Namadi Sambo; Governor Isa Yuguda; the PDP National Chairman, Adamu Mu’azu; and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Senator Bala Mohammed. Also on the convoy were Governors Ibrahim Dankwambo (Gombe) and Godswill Akpabio (Akwa-Ibom) as well as the Director-General of the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, Ahmadu Ali. Jonathan and his team however made their way to the Ibrahim Babangida Square venue of the campaign rally where they were again embarrassed by another set of broom-wielding youths. Before the arrival of the campaign team at the venue, the youths were chanting solidarity songs for the President and the PDP. They marched round the venue with drums and placards with the President’s pictures. They however suddenly turned wild when the programme began and started pelting dignitaries on the platform with objects. They also destroyed Jonathan’s campaign posters, some of the canopies erected at the venue and plastic chairs. Water sachets were thrown at the FCT minister while he was making his speech and pleading with the people of the state to vote for Jonathan and the PDP on February 14. The other dignitaries on the stand had to bend their heads to avoid being hit by the objects that were hurled at them by the crowd. The obviously embarrassed minister called on Jonathan and other dignitaries to ignore what was happening since it was the “handiwork of the opposition.” “Fellow supporters of the PDP, let’s ignore what is happening. This is politics. It is the handiwork of those who are bent on destroying politics in Nigeria,” he told Jonathan and the other members of the campaign team. When Mohammed shouted, “Nigeria, ” the crowd shouted back “sai Buhari,” “Ba mayi,” meaning, “We don’t support the PDP, we want Buhari.” A security operative, who claimed to have witnessed the incidents, told one of our correspondents in Abuja, that six of his colleagues in the Department of State Security, were injured. He added that four of them were treated at an undisclosed hospital and discharged immediately while the remaining two were admitted. The two, according to him, had deep cuts on their heads. source: www.punchng.com/news/youths-attack-presidents-campaign-team-in-bauchi/ |
Politics / Tokunbo Cars To Cost More From January 1 by Drmlab(m): 10:33am On Dec 31, 2014 |
Prices of imported used cars are expected to rise appreciably in the New Year as the Federal Government begins the collection of 70 per cent duty on second-hand vehicles imported into the country from January 1, 2015. This is the second phase of the national automotive policy, which was announced in November 2013. In a move to encourage local assembling of vehicles, the government had last year raised the import tariff on fully-built cars and used vehicles from 22 per cent to 70 per cent. The first phase of the policy involving the payment of 35 per cent duty came into effect in February 2014. The second phase of the policy involving another 35 per cent increase of the levy, expected to take effect on July 1, 2014, was later postponed to January 1, 2015 after consultations with stakeholders. Following the first 35 per cent duty increase on imported used cars, auto dealers at the Berger Yard Auto Market along the Apapa/Oshodi Expressway in Lagos reportedly reduced the number of imports by half due to a corresponding rise in the cost of imports. Dealers, who spoke with our correspondent, said sales had been badly hit as a result of the implementation of the first phase of the policy. When our correspondent visited the Berger Yard Auto Market on Tuesday, activities had considerably slowed down. Car dealers hanged around the various parks at the huge market and called out to passers-by in the hope of getting them to purchase some of the vehicles on display. A car dealer, Okechukwu Madueke, said, “Compared to previous years, sale this Yuletide is really bad. Usually at this period, we would have many people rushing to buy cars. At this park alone, we could sell between 10 and 15 cars daily; so, by the time you put the figure together for the other parks, you will know how well we were doing then. But now, it is a struggle to sell two to three cars daily. “I actually expected that there would be a rush to buy vehicles before the January 1 deadline to beat the enforcement of the second phase of the tariff increase, but things are not going that way at all.” The car dealer also said the heavy traffic along the Oshodi/Apapa Expressway and the devaluation of the naira were other factors that could be responsible for the poor sale. Our correspondent gathered that the current situation at the Berger Yard Market had been so for the past six months. Some dealers expressed their frustration at the traffic situation along the route, which they said could be one of the reasons for the drop in sales. As of the time our correspondent visited the market, petroleum tankers had completely blocked the expressway from Mile 2 to Apapa. Another dealer, Iyke Okoye, said, “Sometimes, buyers turn back at Mile 2 out of frustration after spending many hours in the traffic trying to get to this market. The reality is that there are other auto markets at FESTAC and in other areas of Lagos where they can buy cars. If people have to spend hours in the traffic to get here, they can as well go to other places if only to save themselves the stress. “Accidents happen here on an hourly basis because the petroleum tankers parked indiscriminately along the road. So, we don’t know if this is the reason why people no longer buy from us.” source: www.punchng.com/news/tokunbo-cars-to-cost-more-from-january-1/ |
Politics / Seven Boko Haram Bombers Die In Explosive-laden Van by Drmlab(m): 10:49pm On Dec 30, 2014 |
Seven suspected Boko Haram terrorists were on Monday killed when an Improvised Explosives Device hidden in a Toyota pick-up van exploded before it could get to Biu Market, suspected to be its destination. A security source, who spoke on condition of anonymity with our correspondent on the telephone on Tuesday, said, “A Toyota pick-up van, loaded with maize and beans with IED hidden under them, belonging to Boko Haram insurgents, exploded near Chikwarkir village of Biu, killing all the occupants of the van.” He said it was believed that the insurgents intended to sneak into Biu Market to detonate the explosives and kill many traders and customers. “As you know, it is harvest time and people are taking their farm produce to the market; but thank God, the bomb exploded before they could get to the market,” the source said. He added that the insurgents must have specifically chosen Monday, as they were aware that Monday and Thursday were the market days in Biu, the headquarters of Biu Local Government.-punch |
