Crime / Tension As Residents Clash With Members Of Strange Sect In Osun by Drmlab(m): 9:33pm On Jan 10, 2016
Residents of Kelebe Community in Olorunda Local Government Area of Osun State on Sunday clashed with members of a sect whose religion is considered strange by the people.

Our correspondent gathered that members of the community, armed with placards with various inscription stormed the worship centre of the sect recently built in the area and asked them to relocate.

The sect known as Toriqat Satia Organisation is said to combine Christianity with Islam and Traditional Religion in their mode of worship. This is said to be unsettling the residents, who accused the sect of being ritualists.

The protest which involved the young and the old in Kelebe community was targeted at the time members of the sect gathered for their own worship.

It was gathered that some of the protesters had searched the worship centre obviously to find things to link the sect with human rituals but none was found. The ransacking of the place of worship was said to have angered one of the sect leaders who engaged some of the residents in a shouting match.

The timely intervention of policemen at the scene prevented the place from being razed down by some youths who were angered by the effrontery of the sect members to challenge them.

The Chairman of Kelebe Community, Alhaji Ismail Adeniyi, was quoted to have told the policemen who stormed the scene that the presence of the sect was a threat to the residents who considers their religion strange.

Adeniyi said the community had written petition against the sect to the police, the Department of State Service, Christian Association of Nigeria and Muslim leaders.

He said that resident of Kelebe would seek all lawful means to ensure the relocation of the sect from the area.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Folasade Odoro, did not pick calls put across to her telephone by our correspondent.

She had yet to respond to the inquiry sent to her through text message as of the time of filing this report.

Politics / Scores Killed After Crane Crashes In Mecca Grand Mosque(photos) by Drmlab(m): 9:32pm On Sep 11, 2015
At least 65 people have been killed after a crane collapsed in Mecca’s Grand Mosque on Friday, Saudi Arabia’s civil defence authority says.

It said 154 people were injured as well.

Al Jazeera’s Hasan Patel, reporting from Mecca, said witnesses told him that a crane fell on the third floor of the Grand Mosque around 5.45pm.

Our correspondent said the mosque was packed, even though the incident happened shortly before the 6.30pm prayer.

“Dozens of ambulances are heading to the site. The authorities closed off the area shortly afterwards,” he said.

“This whole place is already a construction site. What made it worse is that around 5.30pm there was severe rain and it’s just gushing down the road,” he said.

“I am surrounded by people who are grieving. The mood here is of sadness.”

Al Jazeera’s Omar Al Saleh said bad weather was thought to be the cause of the accident.

There were reports that lightning may have struck before the crane collapsed.

Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims are expected to visit Mecca for the annual Hajj pilgrimage, which starts on September 21.

Politics / Seven Die In Lagos Fire Incident by Drmlab(m): 9:34pm On Sep 09, 2015
No fewer than seven people have died in a fire incident in Obele Lawanson Community, Surulere area of Lagos State.

The PUNCH learnt that only a six-year-old girl survived the fire accident.

She was said to have been rushed to the emergency ward of the Gbagada General Hospital, while the the remains of the other victims were deposited in a morgue.

The Director of the Lagos State Fire Service, Rasak Fadipe, said the agency could not tell why the casualty figure was high, as the fire only affected some parts of the house.

Fadipe, who said the state’s fire service responded to 12 fire disasters over the night, explained that there was need for increased vigilance among residents.

“We are still at a loss over why the casualty was that high because the fire itself was not that severe. The kitchen was not affected, so nobody can explain why it was that serious. The survivor was rescued from the bathroom,” he said.

Politics / Sultan Of Sokoto Tells Buhari To Go After Looters by Drmlab(m): 7:16am On Aug 18, 2015
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, on Monday told President Muhammadu Buhari to make sure that he prosecutes every person found to have looted the national treasury.

The Sultan said Buhari should not only prosecute the corrupt and ensure that the proceeds of their corruption are forfeited to the Federal Government but that such persons should be sent to jail.

“We are 100 per cent in support of your fight against corruption in this country, and it is our belief that all those found guilty should not only have their entire assets seized and forfeited to government but also face jail sentences,” he said.

The Sultan also asked the Federal Government to institute a national integrity plan as soon as possible. He however challenged the police and other security agencies to support the anti-corruption crusade of the Buhari government.

Abubakar spoke in a keynote speech at the National Security Summit on Community Partnership Approach to Internal Security and Crime Management, organised by the police in Abuja.

Buhari was also present at the event where he spoke about his administration’s plan to strengthen the police.

The Sultan’s support for Buhari’s anti-corruption crusade came amid alleged pressure on the President to forget probing his predecessor’s financial transactions and allegation of a witch-hunt by the Peoples Democratic Party.

Catholic Bishop of Sokoto and member of the National Peace Committee, Hassan Kukah, had reportedly counselled Buhari to forget about probing the ex-President Goodluck Jonathan’s alleged looting of the treasury.

The ruling All Progressives Congress on Sunday, in a veiled response to Kukah’s advice, said the President needed to probe the looters and recover the national resources they had stolen for the ‘change’ promise of the APC to be fulfilled.

In all, the ruling party said at least N11.2tn was looted under the Buhari administration, a claim the PDP has described as “reckless and capable of causing chaos in the country.”

Also on Monday, the Nigeria Labour Congress said it would not protect any corrupt worker in the country.

The NLC President, Mr. Ayuba Wabba, stated this in an interview with one of our correspondents in Abuja.

Wabba was reacting to the reported seizure of landed properties of three civil servants by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission.

The NLC president said that the war against corruption should be total, adding that the workers’ union was committed to the anti-graft war.

He said, “If the properties are acquired with ill-gotten wealth, they should be investigated and the properties should be seized and those involved prosecuted.

“The fight against corruption should be total. Labour and workers should be in the forefront of the war against corruption. We have demonstrated that by making the commitment that we will champion the campaign to recover all looted funds and prosecute those involved.

“We are not going to protect any worker that enriches himself through corrupt proceeds. NLC will not protect any worker that is used or allow himself to be used to perpetrate acts of corruption.”

Wabba, who said that the congress would show good examples, urged workers to be whistle-blowers.

He added, “We must start with ourselves first as workers and trade unions. Let them not be used as a conduit to bring our country to its knees. A lot of money has been stolen and there is no way this money can be stolen without the connivance of one or two persons, even workers.

“We are not going to defend and support such workers. They have done a lot of harm to some of us; the educational sector is in a shambles because of the money they have stolen. The NLC will neither support nor defend such people.”

The Executive Director, Civil Societies Legislative and Advocacy Centre, Auwual Musa-Rafsanjani, noted that the anti-graft crusade of the ICPC was an indication that the Federal Government would not tolerate corruption.

He called for the prosecution of corrupt persons and recovery of stolen public funds to deter others from toeing the same ignoble path.

“We should not only recover stolen public funds from corrupt people, they should also be banned from holding public office. Whatever the EFCC and the ICPC have done so far is commendable, but we need to sanction the culprits by naming and shaming them,” Musa-Rafsanjani stated.

The acting Executive Secretary, Anti-Corruption Network, Ebenezer Oyetakin, observed that the ICPC seemed to have found its rhythm, adding that “what is happening is because of phobia for Buhari.”

Oyetakin said that the anti-corruption campaign of the government would institutionalise probity in the country, noting that the setting up of eminent jurists to reform the nation’s anti-corruption laws was a bold move that indicated that the crusade would be encompassing.

Some civil society organisations and lawyers also commended the move by the ICPC to seize the properties of allegedly corrupt civil servants.

Respondents told one of our correspondents in separate telephone conversations that the move was in line with the President Muhammadu Buhari administration’s desire to tackle corruption in the country.

Executive Chairman of the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, Mr. Debo Adeniran, who hailed the development, said one could easily find out that some choice properties in Abuja and Lagos were owned by civil servants whose legitimate earnings could not account for.

He said, “We believe it is a long-overdue assignment. They (the anti-corruption agencies) didn’t need to wait this long to start this.

“For instance section 7 of the EFCC Act enables the EFCC to investigate anybody they suspect is living beyond his or her means.

“Many choice properties in Abuja and Lagos are owned by civil servants, judges and magistrates. All of these people should be investigated.”

Chairman of the Civil Society Network Against Corruption, Mr. Lanre Suraju, also reiterated the need to focus the anti-corruption searchlight on civil servants, whom he said were well grounded in the system.

Suraji said, “I think it is very important that the ICPC and other law enforcement agencies investigate the civil servants. The civil servants know the nitty-gritty of the system. Sometimes, they misdirect public officers.

“Go to Lagos and Abuja, you will be shocked to know of the many choice assets owned by civil servants. The anti-corruption agencies should seriously focus on the civil servants.”

Politics / Oyo, Yobe Declare Pvc Collection Holiday by Drmlab(m): 8:23am On Feb 05, 2015
The Oyo and Yobe state governments on
Wednesday declared public holiday to enable
voters to collect their Permanent Voter Cards
before the February 8 expiration given by the
Independent National Electoral Commission for
the exercise.
The Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi and his
Yobe State counterpart, Ibrahim Gaidam, had
declared Thursday, February 5 and Friday,
February 6, 2015, as public holiday in their
states.
According to a release issued by Ajimobi’s
Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Festus Adedayo,
the holiday is to enable the people of the state
to collect their PVCs.
The governor enjoined the people to take full
advantage of the public holiday by coming out
massively to collect their PVCs, reiterating that
it was an opportunity for them to connect with
their future by voting for candidates of their
choice.
Also, the Special Adviser to Governor Gaidam
on Press Affairs and Information, Mallam
Abdullah Bego, in a statement said the holiday
was to enable workers across the state to
collect their PVCs from INEC offices in their
respective areas.
Bego said, “The governor urges all workers and
people across the state who have not yet
collect their PVCs to use the period to
collect their cards as a step towards exercising
their civic duty to vote during the forthcoming
elections.”
He however said banks and other financial
institutions operating in the state could open their
doors for business during the two days.
Meanwhile, the Oyo State Resident Electoral
Commissioner, Rufus Akeju, has said that INEC
would not disenfranchise any voter by withholding
their PVCs.
He said this during a meeting with women groups
in Ibadan on Wednesday.
He assured the people of the state that the
cards would go round before the close of
distribution on Friday.
He said, “INEC is doing its very best and we
will see to it that all those who registered will
get their PVCs by Friday. Without the card, no
one can vote, in fact anyone without the PVC
has no business at the polling unit on election
days. All the remaining cards are available in our
office and we urge the electorates to visit the
ward where they registered to collect the cards.
We have realised that some people have refused
to come for their cards while they claim that
their cards were not ready. If you like your
country, you will use your voting rights justly but
you can only do that if you collect your PVC.”
