The truth is, alot of what is going on is the same emotive hullabaloo that preceded the elections. I have been using this Tinubu court case to actually rate Nigerian SANs and most of them are dullards.

The US govt confiscated the entirety of Tinubu's money that they related to proceeds from heroin sale and basically accused him of being a money launderer for the drug barons.

However he defended himself is immaterial but the bottom line is, the govt could not convict him of that accusation so they switched it to an issue of tax evasion for said sum. What that means is, since you are arguing that you made these monies legally, we are now alleging that you never paid taxes on those. Tinubu agreed to that and forfeited what would have been his tax and fine for evading the tax which summed up to $460k. The rest of his mula was remitted to him. That is all that happened.

1. Before a case is brought to court there must be an investigation. During investigation you don't get represented by a lawyer. Tinubu was not in the US during the investigation and so the prosecutor opted for a forfeiture. The reason was not avoid the cost of carrying out a full blown investigation.

2. A forfeiture is also a punishment according to US laws. You cannot be punished unless you have accepted guilt. The forfeiture arrangement was accepted by Tinubu, that was an admission of guilt. He accepted it because it was a fair deal for him and he even signed a no disclaimer agreement. If the money was legit, he will fly to US to claim his hard earned money.

3. All drug related money will also fail tax evasion. This is common sense. I hope you don't need explanation.

It's simple really, there were charges against Tinubu, which is what the documents highlights, if Tinubu was found guilty of those charges he would have been indicted and convicted. Religion and politics are 5 and 6 in Nigerian politics.

Mr Carson said the presidential election was one of the most competitive polls in Nigeria and in Africa.

He, however, observed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) needed to up its game.

“Nigeria deserves the very best electoral process. “To me, the problem is not with Tinubu and the other candidates,’’ he said.

Mr Carson hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for his commitment in delivering a free and fair election for Nigeria.
