DASH DIET AND HYPERTENSION- PART ONE

We hear DASH diet and many keep wondering, what exactly is this diet all about. We bring you the content and what the diet stands for and the benefit it gives to those that are on it.

DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. The diet is simple:

• Eat more fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy foods.
• Cut back on foods that are high in saturated fat, cholesterol, and trans fats.
•Eat more whole-grain foods, fish, poultry, and nuts.
• Limit sodium, sweets, sugary drinks, and red meats.

In research studies, people who were on the DASH diet lowered their blood pressure within 2 weeks.

Another diet -- DASH-Sodium -- calls for cutting back sodium to 1,500 milligrams a day (about 2/3 teaspoon). Studies of people on the DASH-Sodium plan lowered their blood pressure as well.

To Start DASH Diet

The DASH diet calls for a certain number of servings daily from various food groups. The number of servings you require may vary, depending on how many calories you need per day.

You can make gradual changes. For instance, start by limiting yourself to 2,400 milligrams of sodium per day (about 1 teaspoon). Then, once your body has adjusted to the diet, cut back to 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day (about 2/3 teaspoon). These amounts include all sodium eaten, including sodium in food products as well as in what you cook with or add at the table.

Tips for Dash Diet

• Add a serving of vegetables at lunch and at dinner.
• Add a serving of fruit to your meals or as a snack. Canned and dried fruits are easy to use, but check that they don't have added sugar.
• Use only half your typical serving of butter, margarine, or salad dressing, and use low-fat or fat-free condiments.

What is Gallstones

Gallstones (commonly misspelled gall stones or gall stone) are solid particles that form bile in the gallbladder.

The gallbladder is a small saclike organ in the upper right part of the abdomen. It is located under the liver, just below the front rib cage on the right side. The gallbladder is part of the biliary system, which includes the liver and the pancreas. The biliary system, among other functions, produces bile and digestive enzymes.


Bile is a fluid made by the liver to help in the digestion of fats.

It contains several different substances, including cholesterol and bilirubin, a waste product of normal breakdown of blood cells in the liver. Bile is stored in the gallbladder until needed. When we eat a high-fat, high-cholesterol meal, the gallbladder contracts and injects bile into the small intestine via a small tube called the common bile duct.

Symptoms usually occur as complications develop. The most common symptom is pain in the right upper part of the abdomen.Because the pain comes in episodes, it is often referred to as an "attack."

Attacks may occur every few days, weeks, or months; they may even be separated by years. The pain usually starts within 30 minutes after a fatty or greasy meal. The pain is usually severe, dull, and constant, and can last from one to five hours. It may radiate to the right shoulder or back.It occurs frequently at night and may awaken the person from sleep. The pain may make the person want to move around to seek relief, but many patients prefer to lay still and wait for the attack to subside.

What is Treatment of Gallstones

After a diagnosis of gallstones, the patient may choose not to have surgery or may not be able to have surgery right away. There are measures the patient can take to relieve the symptoms to include:

intake of only clear liquids to give the gallbladder a rest, avoid fatty or greasy meals, and take acetaminophen (Tylenol, etc.) for pain.

Call a health care practitioner if symptoms worsen or if new symptoms appear. Abdominal pain with vomiting, fever, or jaundice warrants an immediate visit to a doctor's office or a hospital emergency department.
