Politics / 2019 Election: Another APC Chieftain, Makama , Over 1000 Supporter Join Atiku In by Ebisco013: 10:04pm On Dec 04, 2017
Former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Kaduna State, Alhaji Yaro Makama has dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC and returned to the PDP.

Makama decamped to the APC prior to the 2015 general election.
MC EBISCO had reported that the former PDP chieftain and over 1000 of his supporters will return to the party following former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar’s footsteps.

Makama returned to the PDP, along with his followers at the weekend in Kaduna.

He was welcomed back to the party at a ceremony attended by top leaders of the PDP, including the interim National Chairman of the party, Senator Ahmed Makarfi and the Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT), Senator Walid Jibrin, among several others.

Speaking during the occasion, the decampee said he made a grave mistake by joining the APC in 2015.

Makama who spoke in Hausa language, said the APC has failed Nigerians, declaring that the time had come to “change the change.”

He said he joined the party, “thinking it would address the numerous problems confronting Nigerians” but regretted that over two years since its assumption of power, Nigerians were plunged into untold hardship.”

He further condemned the dismissal of teachers and Local Government workers in Kaduna State, alleging that Governor Nasir el-Rufai was implementing anti-people programmes.

He then advised Governor Nasir El-Rufai to start packing his belongings from the Government House, as the people will not vote him again in 2019.

He added, “The APC has brought much suffering to Nigerians, in Kaduna State, the teachers are crying, local government workers are suffering and traditional institutions are ridiculed.

“The school feeding program is in comatose, in fact, nothing is working in the state, so we must change the change.”

Makama was the Chairman of PDP in Kaduna State for eight years when Makarfi was governor.

Crime / How I Was Abducted By Suspected Ritualists – Female Student Narrates After Being by Ebisco013: 7:37am On Dec 03, 2017
Pandemonium broke out recently in Malete, Moro LGA of Kwara State as suspected ritualists reportedly abducted no fewer than 13 persons including a female student of Kwara State University.

A student of the Kwara State University in the Malete area of Ilorin identified as Dorcas Olanrewaju, who was kidnapped by suspected ritual killers on Thursday, has been freed.

According to PUNCH, Olanrewaju who was released at Omu-Aran by her captors on Friday 24-hours after she was kidnapped on her way to the campus said that out of 13 of them in the kidnappers’ den, six were killed.

While narrating her ordeal in the hands of kidnappers, the year two Mass Communication student said she left her residence outside the campus and boarded one of the campus shuttles.

She had an examination to take on campus but while on the way, she noticed that she was driven to an unknown destination. Sensing that she was in danger, she quickly sent a text message to one of her friends to inform her that she had been abducted by some unidentified persons suspected to be ritual killers.

She said, “While I was in the vehicle, a female passenger complained of cold, so the windows were closed. I lost consciousness thereafter. I later found myself among some people in a bush at night.

“We were about 13 in the bush but the kidnappers later took six victims away. We realised they had killed them when the kidnappers put seven of us in the vehicle again and the rest were nowhere to be found.

“They told us that they were heading to Ekiti State. I was kept inside the boot of the vehicle. When we got to Offa, they asked where I was from and I told them I was from Omu Aran. At Omu Aran, the vehicle was overheating. They then set me free. Unknown to them, it was in front of my father’s house.”

The Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer, Ajayi Okasanmi, said the command had commenced an investigation into the abduction.

He said that the police were on the trail of the perpetrators, adding that the report had been circulated to police formations within and outside the state to ensure the arrest of the perpetrators.

The statement said, “The university learnt that she sent a distress call through her mobile phone indicating that she could not identify the location at which she had been dropped.

“Immediately they were alerted, officials of the KWASU Safety Unit swung into action by contacting the security operatives and telecommunication agencies to track the phone.

“The victim was picked up by the police. Officials of KWASU Safety Unit and her parents were later invited to the Omu-Aran Police Station.”

At the moment, the identity of the vehicle involved in the kidnap incident and its driver are not yet known. But Aliaga assured that the security agencies would track the perpetrators down.

He said, “Following the incident, security has been beefed up around Malete and the campus. Armed police patrol has been deployed on the route and regular check of vehicles has intensified since yesterday.

“Management wishes to urge students to be security-conscious, to patronise only registered transport and to report strange persons or movements around their hostels and campus.”

Sports / NBBF Calls For Calm Ahead Of November 30 Deadline by Ebisco013: 10:27pm On Nov 29, 2017
The Nigeria Basketball Federation, NBBF, has called for calm ahead of the November 30 deadline date given by the Federation of International Basketball Associations FIBA to the Nigeria Olympic Committee to find an amicable solution to the leadership impasse.

At a media briefing held today at the secretariat of Lagos SWAN, Vice President of the federation, Babs Ogunade gave an assurance that the decision of the apex body will only establish a solid frame work for future elections in Nigeria.

Ogunade said that the board had compromised several times just for the sake of basketball and its growth but the outgone board had been so adamant despite attempts by the NBBF President, Engineer Musa Kida to open up communication.

“We had to sign an undertaken before the Federal Government could allow them use the Indoor Sports hall in Lagos for the conclusion of the Zenith Women’s final 6 and the concluding part of the premier league for women.

“When we went to Cotonou for the FIBA Africa 3×3 zonal qualifiers, another team was sent by the Kano group. When it was our turn to play, the Kano team received a call to also come on court despite not registering for the competition.

“The intention was to cause confusion and create an impression that there was a crisis, but out of maturity, we had to step down our teams in other not to embarrass the country.

“When we went to Madagascar for the draws for the African champions cup, the Kano group also sent representatives to come and represent Nigeria, but FIBA in their wisdom related with us.”

Also speaking at the event, the international representative on the NBBF board, Col. Samuel Ahmedu (rtd) denied claims that FIBA did not recognize their election.

“According to the letter sent to the different groups and the NOC, FIBA categorically stated that they were investigating the allegations of government interference during the conduct of the June 13 elections held in Abuja under the supervision of NOC.”

Ahmedu said the result of their findings will determine FIBA’s decision.

He corroborated the VP’s claim that the Kano group just wanted to create an artificial crisis where there was none.

“Despite our clear cut directives to teams not to participate in the final 6 and final 8 competitions subject to approval, we still compromised and allowed the teams that emerged from that championship to represent Nigeria at the international stage.”

Ahmedu who is the Benue state basketball association Chairman pointed fingers at the former board for several attempts to sabotage the country’s effort during the preparations for the cup of nations for men and women.

“When we were preparing for the women’s competition, the former board called some of the players not to report to camp because a special camping arrangement had been made for the players to be camped in Tunisia.

“For the men, most of the 2015 set who won the Afrobasket were influenced not to come play for their fatherland. Because of that, many of them gave different excuses while some demanded to be paid as much as 200,000 dollars before playing for Nigeria.”

The players’ representative on the board, Ejike Ugboaja maintained that FIBA who are interested in promoting the game globally will look for alternatives rather than banning Nigeria who are the reigning champions in the African cup of nations for women and FIBA Africa 3×3 competition for men.

“The players just want to play basketball. We are tired of the efforts by some people to destroy the fibre of basketball in Nigeria.”

He blamed Umar for the crisis rocking the Nigerian basketball and the embarrassment at the international level.

“He knew his time was up, that was why he went to Kano to conduct an election on the 12th of June. His plan was to use the election to muddle up the pond and create a rancorous situation which will force round table discussions.”

He said in line with the FIBA guidelines, the former president of the NBBF, Tijani Umar has completed his mandate of 2 terms and he is statute barred to even contest for another term of 4 years.

Politics / Biafra: IPOB, Nnandi Kanu’s Activities Putting 11.6 Million Igbos At Risk – Kalu by Ebisco013: 9:44am On Nov 29, 2017
Chikwendu Kalu, the Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, says the activities of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB under the leadership of elusive Nnamdi Kanu, put the lives of 11.6 million Igbo people living outside the South East at risk.

Kalu said this in an interview with newsmen in Abuja.

He stated that Kanu’s agitation was not done within the ambit of the law, stressing that the IPOB leader should have explored legal avenue to redress grievances against the South East.

According to Kalu, “Yes I was worried but I thank God for what He was able to use the governor to achieve during that period. What saved the situation was the curfew he imposed when the military came and that calmed the situation.

“But let me point out that the agitation on the part of Nnamdi3 Kanu was not done within the ambit of the law.

“If you have any grievance, it is incumbent on you to explore all legal avenues to redress it. It is not something you begin to militarize the environment to achieve. That is exactly what happened. Immediately after the curfew was imposed, what the House did was to condemn Kanu and adopted the position of the South-East governors by proscribing IPOB.

“Let me quickly point out, the young man possibly didn’t know that as at the time he was doing those things, 11.6million Igbos live outside Abia.

“They live in all states of the north and if anything had happened to the few northerners that were in Abia, those 11.6million Igbos may have come to harm.”

A 34-year-old man lost his life at Alaife Umuaku Uli, in Ihiala local government area of Anambra state following suspected accidental discharge from the gun of a vigilante operative, identified as Chinedu Ibeanozie.

Politics / AGF Lied I Bought Property Seized By Maina – Falana by Ebisco013: 6:52am On Nov 26, 2017
Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), has lambasted the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), for linking him to a N1bn property located at 43 Gana Street, Maitama, Abuja.

The embattled former chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina, had accused Falana of buying the building which was one of the properties he helped to seize from pension thieves and handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Malami had while testifying before the National Assembly last week, echoed the allegation, saying the property was sold to a ‘Lagos lawyer’.

However, Falana said, “I have decided to take issue with Mr. Malami over his false claim that the EFCC had sold the property in question to me. Contrary to Mr. Malami’s claim, I never bought any property from the EFCC.

“If Mr. Malami had conducted a search on the property in question, he would have found that it was one of the assets used to ‘collaterise’ a loan obtained from Bank PHB by A Group Properties over 10 years ago.

“He would also have found that the property is a subject matter of a suit which is currently pending before the Federal High Court sitting at Abuja. (See Suit No /2015 between Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria v A Group Properties Limited).”

The human rights lawyer added that the suit was instituted by AMCON due to the failure of the company to liquidate the loan.

Falana said in granting the ex parte application, filed by AMCON in the matter, the court ordered an interim forfeiture of the assets of A Group Properties Limited including No. 42 Gana Street, Maitama District, Abuja.

He added, “The said order was granted on November 11, 2015. However, in a bid to pay the loan, A Group Properties Limited decided to sell some of the properties. The sale of the property in question to me was made subject to the setting aside of the order of interim forfeiture which had been obtained by AMCON.

“Up till now, the case has not been concluded as the parties have asked for time to resolve the dispute amicably and file terms of settlement. To that extent, the transaction on the property remains inchoate.

“Although the said order of interim forfeiture was granted in favour of AMCON over two years ago, Mr. Malami has not deemed it fit to disclose to the Federal High Court that the property at 42 Gana Street, Maitama District, Abuja, was recovered by the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reform.”

Politics / 2019: Why PDP Will Not Return To Power – Kalu by Ebisco013: 8:54pm On Nov 25, 2017
Former Governor of Abia State and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Orji Uzor Kalu, has advise former ruling party, PDP, to stop boasting that it would “bounce back” in 2019.

Kalu, while speaking with newsmen at the private wing of Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos, declared that the PDP can never win election again in Nigeria because of the large scale looting of the treasury which equally attracted the attention of members of the international community.

His words: “How can they (PDP) bounce back when treasury was looted? How can they bounce back when the international community doesn’t see anything good in them? How can they bounce back when we gave them our treasury, they opened and looted it.

“We would call names if they want us to call names in future. All the world powers knew what happened and this is why they tactically insisted that PDP must leave power. PDP committed what was very shameful to have seen in a democratic process.

“There is no system that is not with corruption but going to loot is an affront to Nigerian people. They opened the treasury and looted the treasury. President Buhari, was restrained by some world powers not to open up what happened in the NNPC during PDP government.

“If Nigerians know what happened then,, those people would not pass this airport, people would grab them. What they did is what ears and eyes should not even hear. How can they come back? They will definitely go into oblivion, they would never win election again in Nigeria unless they changed their name.”

Sports / Why Nigeria Dropped In FIFA Ranking Despite Wins Over Argentina, Others by Ebisco013: 3:44pm On Nov 24, 2017
Football fans in Nigeria were angry after the November FIFA Rankings was release on Thursday and the Super Eagles were placed 50 in the world despite a 4-2 win over Argentina..

Fans were hoping Nigeria will move up from it’s 45th position after the win, but their expectations were dashed when Nigeria rather dropped to 50th in the world.

But an explanation as to how the rankings was conducted by the World Soccer governing body was made available by Giovanni Marti of the FIFA Media Department back in 2013 when a similar situation occurred.

The explanation came after Kunle Solaja of Sportsvillagesquare.com. demanded to know why the Eagles dropped in the monthly ranking.

Marti providing two documents and giving a web link for further clarification.

He asserted that FIFA was not calculating the “results and rankings on a hypothetical basis.”

Giovanni explained that the ranking is not based solely on current results, but older results have impact on recent scores.

“It’s simply an accumulated depreciation over the past years…meaning that as some matches grew older, they are devalued according to a calculating scheme, backing up the claims with the scoresheet of Nigeria’s matches since 2010.

After his response, other FIFA staff members – Nicolas Maingot and Matthias Kunz also joined in providing documents to back up the ranking.

The first set of match log sent was questionable. Nigeria’s matches carried wrong dates and were three years older than scheduled.

For instance, Nigeria’s 1-0 defeat of Benin played on January 16, 2010 was captured as having been played on January 15, 2006. All matches of 2010 were captured as 2006 and a day earlier than actual.

Those of 2011 were similarly captured as those of 2007 and so on. Considering that age is an important factor on current ranking, it is envisaged that it could have had negative impact on Nigeria’s total point haul.

Match results are depreciated according to age. A team’s total number of points over a four-year period is determined by adding the average number of points gained from matches during the past 12 months; and the average number of points gained from matches older than 12 months depreciates yearly.

Matches played four years ago are discounted to have 20% value. Those older than four years have zero value as they are deleted. Match average from Year 3 have a 30% value while those of last year have 50% value and the ones of the current year carry full value of 100%.

It was explained that four years, covering one World Cup cycle, are taken into account in calculating the ranking.

When the issue of wrong dates were brought up, Giovanni Monday sent another e-mail with another log for Nigeria explaining that his colleagues from the Ranking unit gave him another version as in the earlier one, the dates slipped in the excel-list when programming.

“But now my colleagues remark that everything has been controlled and everything is correct. There are no effects on the current points that Nigeria have”.

Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture, on Thursday said the President Muhammadu Buhari’s government has engaged over 200, 000 youths through its N-Power empowerment scheme.

Mohammed said this while noting that Buhari has delivered his major promises ‎to Nigerians.

Addressing journalists at the ongoing 9th meeting of the National council on Tourism, Culture and National Orientation in Jigawa State, Muhammad declared that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, will never come back to rule Nigeria.

“With tremendous achievements recorded in two years by this administration of APC under President Muhammad Buhari no reasonable Nigerian will give his vote to PDP again”, he said.

Noting that the difference between the All Progressives Congress, APC, and PDP’s administration is very clear, the Minister insisted that Buhari’s administration has succeeded in ensuring the security of lives and properties.

“It is very clear to everybody that the Boko Haram terrorism is now‎ reduced to its lowest level compared with last three years even as some of the young Chibok girls whom were abducted by the Boko Haram were saved and re united with their families,” he said.

Politics / Louis Amoke: Enugu LG Polls And Ugwuanyi’s Winning Ways by Ebisco013: 10:42pm On Nov 21, 2017
Last week, the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) released the final results of the 2017 Local Government Elections conducted to elect chairmen and councilors of the 17 council areas and 260 electoral wards in the state, respectively.

The latest results, which were the outcome of the bye-election in Eke and Obioma wards, Udi Local Government Area, saw the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Ezeako Lawrence and Mr. Chijioke Ikechukwu, emerging as winners of the two seats contested.

The Chairman of ENSIEC, Dr. Mike Ajogwu (SAN) had while declaring the results of the Saturday, November 4 Local Government Elections announced that the PDP won all the 17 chairmanship seats and 258 councillorship positions, stating that elections did not hold in Eke and Obioma wards.

The ENSIEC Chairman said that a new date will be fixed for bye-election in the two remaining wards, to elect their councilors.

Announcing the results of the bye-election, Dr. Ajogwu held that in Eke ward, Mr. Ezeako of the PDP pulled 1,625 votes against his only contender, Mr. Philip Eze of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who scored 384 votes. He added that in Obioma ward, Mr. Chijioke of the PDP scored 1,763 votes to defeat his only rival from the APC, Onyema Hyginus, who polled 31 votes.

Describing the bye-election as credible, free and fair, the ENSIEC Chairman commended the electorate and the security agencies for the peaceful conduct of the exercise, adding that the winners will be issued with the Certificate of Return, accordingly.

Dr. Ajogwu, as a promoter of sportsmanship, advised the winners to be magnanimous in victory, and urged the losers to join hands in the development of their areas in particular and the state in general.

With the latest results, the exercise came to a peaceful conclusion with the PDP winning all the 17 Chairmanship seats and 260 Councillorship positions, a landslide victory that reaffirmed the party’s stronghold in the state, evidently made possible through the visionary and people-oriented leadership of Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

The governor’s good works, his humble disposition and Midas touch in boosting the state’s lean resources through vision, innovation, accountability, fiscal discipline and prudent management for sustainable economic growth have endeared him and his administration to the people of the state.

Gov. Ugwuanyi has institutionalized a culture of governance that is inclusive, endearing and also impacts positively on the lives of the people of the state in all spheres of development, despite the drought in the state’s finance, occasioned by the nation’s economic challenges.

Interestingly, Enugu State under Gov. Ugwuanyi has been experiencing peace and good governance, and fervently secure in the hands of God. The governor has shown tremendous commitment to the wellbeing of the people, through the provision of critical infrastructure, especially in the rural areas to create more urban centres for socio-economic expansion, in line with his administration’s rural development agenda.

Apart from the over 10 massive road projects that were executed across the three senatorial districts of the state in the first two years of the administration, in addition to the over 35 development projects that were simultaneously executed in the 17 Local Government Areas, Ugwuanyi’s administration has recently awarded multiple road projects in some satellite areas and communities such as Abakpa Nike, Amurri, Awgu, etc to ameliorate the hardship being encountered by the people of the areas as a result of the deplorable condition of the roads.

Away from infrastructural development, the governor’s giant strides in regular payment of workers’ salaries and retirees’ pensions, when many states are unable to pay not to talk of embarking on capital projects because of the nation’s economic downturn; his remarkable achievements in other strata of the economy, such as in education, health, investment promotion, empowerment, water supply, agriculture, sports, etc, have also brought enormous goodwill to the PDP-led government in Enugu State.

For instance, in education, apart from construction, renovation and equipping of primary and secondary schools, more teachers are being recruited to improve the standard of learning in public schools. In line with this vision, the governor recently approved the recruitment of 2000 tutorial staff across the 291 public secondary schools in the state, under the Post Primary Schools Management Board (PPSMB) and one is glad to note that the jobs were advertised, accordingly.

All these elements of good governance, coupled with the governor’s accessibility and closeness to the people, no doubt, contributed immensely to the overwhelming victory of the PDP in the just concluded council elections in the state.

Kudos must, therefore, go to the people’s governor for this great feat recorded by the PDP at the polls, notwithstanding the challenges posed by the opposition political parties.

The landslide victory was quite commendable and outstanding, considering the fact that this was the first time since 1999, the PDP in Enugu State went to the polls as an opposition political party at the national level and still won 100 percent. It shows the level of goodwill, solidarity and support the party and its government enjoy from the people of the state.

Prior to the November 4 council elections, predictions were made that the PDP will sweep the polls, overwhelmingly. The prediction was based on the glaring fact that the party and its government were very popular and acceptable in the state, having kept faith with the promises they made to the people. It was also based on a critical evaluation of the engagement of the political parties in campaign, which is the most tedious aspect of the electoral process.

It is on record that, Gov. Ugwuanyi, at the pre-election stage, led the PDP to prosecute an intensive, sustained and vigorous campaign in the 17 councils, traversing all the nooks and crannies of the state, canvassing for votes.

The rich and well attended campaign rallies were anchored on the sustenance of good governance, continued service to the people of the state, as well as the need to deepen and advance development in the rural areas, to give the dwellers a sense of belonging as the true heroes of democracy.

Intensifying efforts towards a total victory at the polls, Gov. Ugwuanyi, personally took the PDP campaign to the streets, markets and door-step of the people, urging the electorate to come out en masse to vote for the candidates of the party. It is pertinent to note that while all these were going on, other political parties showed less commitment to campaigns, resulting to their poor performance at the polls and the overwhelming victory of the PDP.

One appreciates the fact that the elections were adjudged peaceful, credible, free and fair by not only the independent monitors but also by 37 out of 40 registered political parties in the state.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) was the first to commend the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) for organizing peaceful and credible Local Government Elections in the state, “in spite of some failed plots to undermine the exercise”.

Speaking after monitoring the elections, the National President of NANS, Comrade Chinonso Obasi, told journalists that they were pleased with the conduct of the elections, and applauded Gov. Ugwuanyi for providing an enabling environment, which he said gave the electorate the opportunity to exercise their franchise.

NANS President explained that despite the complaints by the opposition over the alleged late arrival of election materials, the swift intervention of the electoral body by extending the polls till 5 pm addressed the issue, satisfactorily, adding that “our observations from the polling units visited showed that the exercise was successful, peaceful and in accordance with the commission’s guidelines”.

In a grand endorsement of the polls, the 37 out of 40 political parties in the state, unanimously adjudged the exercise as free, fair and credible and in conformity with the minimum requirements of international best practices.

Addressing a press conference in Enugu, the political parties in a statement signed by their state chairmen, congratulated the ENSIEC for the peaceful, free and fair conduct of the elections across the 260 electoral wards of the state.

The political parties also applauded Gov. Ugwuanyi for providing the enabling environment and the “needed support and funding to the commission to discharge its constitutional mandate without any interference whatsoever”.

They noted that “never in the history of Local Government Elections in Enugu has there been a commission that leaves its door open to the political parties”, adding that the electoral body was “accessible to the political parties and much more they were receptive to superior arguments”.

The group also congratulated the candidates who emerged victorious at the polls as Chairmen and Councilors as well as those who lost, saying: “Without the losers in the contest, there would be no real yardstick to measure or assess our democratic progress”.

From the above narrative, it is crystal clear that the PDP witnessed a well deserved victory at the just concluded Council Elections in Enugu State. It is now, therefore, expected of the winners to maintain the tempo of good governance being championed by Gov. Ugwuanyi in line with the dogma that Enugu State is truly in the hands of God.

Politics / Falana Denies Buying House From Wanted Ex-pensions Boss, Maina by Ebisco013: 10:26pm On Nov 21, 2017
Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has denied buying any house from wanted former chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), Abdulrasheed Maina.

Falana said on Tuesday in Lagos, that there was no truth in the claims.

He challenged Maina to produce the details of the house that he purportedly bought from him.

“Which house? Where is it located? Is it in Lagos or Abuja,” he asked.

“Let him give details of the house. I have never met him or had any dealings with him before.”

“He is engaging in the reckless blackmail because I criticized the careless handling of his matter by the federal government,” he maintained.

Maina, had through his lawyer, Sani Katu, alleged that Falana was a beneficiary of a recovered asset which was sold to him for N1billion.

According to him, “it was because the lawyer was a beneficiary of the recovered assets that he has resorted to attacking Maina, fearing that he would be exposed.”

“During the assignment of the Maina Led Pension Reform Task Force Team, it recovered assets and funds worth N1.6trillion. Amongst the real Estates recovered from pension thieves is a Maitama mansion worth N1billion situated at No 42 Gana Street, Maitama Abuja.”

Crime / OMG!!! Kwara State University Lecturer Commits Suicide by Ebisco013: 10:09am On Nov 18, 2017
It was a sad day at the Kwara State University as a lecturer at the Department of Crop Production, College of Agriculture, Kwara State University, Malete, Dr. Solomon Osunlola, committed suicide.

The Director of the institute’s Public Relations Department, Dr. Isiaka Aliagan, who confirmed the incident on Friday in Ilorin, said that the deceased was a Lecturer 1 with the College of Agriculture.

He said that Osunlola joined the services of the institution on a full-time appointment in 2010.

“However, during staff verification, it was discovered that Osunlola retired from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, before taking up a full-time appointment with KWASU.

“But, in spite of this discovery, the university, in August 2017, converted Osunlola’s appointment to a contract engagement on compassionate grounds,” he said.

Sources indicated that the school had conveyed its conversion of Osunlola’s appointment to him via a letter signed by the Registrar.

The sources, however, said that the loss of his full-time status led to a steady decline in Osunlola’s mental stability as he became depressed and “started misbehaving”.

“One of his friends even offered to assist him to secure a job at Landmark University, but the deceased did not submit his credentials when he was asked.

“Another friend also took him to a cleric for prayers and counselling after noticing that he was depressed,” the sources added.

A family source said that relations broke the deceased’s door when he did not come out in the morning on Friday where they discovered that he that he had committed suicide.

Politics / Anambra Guber: 10 Major Things To Know by Ebisco013: 7:47am On Nov 17, 2017
Saturday’s governorship election in Anambra is expected to be a close contest between four leading candidates. However, there are 37 candidates in the election including five women. Here are 10 major things to know about the coming election as well as previous elections in Anambra.
The Centre for Democracy and Development, CDD, in partnership with PREMIUM TIMES will bring you a comprehensive coverage of the election.
1. Godfatherism
The politics in Anambra State is the case study for Godfather Politics in Nigeria where the quest to hold on to power with so much enthusiasm, by these politicians as our foremost leaders, is on the increase. From the Fourth Republic, the state has witnessed these ugly trends as political actors and their estranged political godfathers are always in contention for who is who in their state. For each electoral cycle, there is a godfather.
The political brawl (which could be said to have birthed godfatherism), in Anambra State began with Governor Mbadinuju and Emeka Offor. The trend continued with the inception of Governor Chris Ngige and his political godfather, Chris Uba; a crisis that caused a lot in the polity of the nation and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in particular.

Below, is a compilation of godsons and their godfathers since 1999:

1999-2003: Governor Chinwoke Mbadinuju and Emeka Offor
2003- 2006: Governor Chris Ngige and Chris Uba
2006-2014: Governor Peter Obi and Emeka Ojukwu
2015-date: Governor Willie Obiano and Peter Obi

Each of the front liner candidates in the Saturday elections is already linked to a godfather. However, the fight between Peter Obi of PDP and Willie Obiano of APGA, will partly define the electoral outcomes.

List of Governors of Anambra State from 1999 to 2017:

Chinwoke Mbadinuju: From May 29, 1999 to May 29, 2003 PDP

Chris Ngige: From May 29, 2003 to March 17, 2006 PDP

Peter Obi: From March 17, 2006 to November 3, 2006 APGA

Virginia Etiaba: From November 3, 2006 to February 9, 2007 APGA. (Appointed when the previous governor, Peter Obi, was impeached by the state legislature for alleged gross misconduct. She transferred her powers back to Peter Obi three months later when an appeal court nullified the impeachment).

Peter Obi: From February 9, 2007 to March 17, 2014 APGA. (Andy Uba was elected and sworn in as the governor of Anambra State on 29 May 2007. He was removed by a Supreme Court decision on June 14, 2007. He governed the state for 14 days).

Willie Obiano: From March 17, 2014 to date APGA

Anambra State is the only state that paraded five governors under controversial circumstances from 1999 to 2007, including one who spent just 14 days in Office.

2. Power Rotations
The matter of zoning or power rotation – where elected positions rotate between different geographical areas – has emerged as a major factor in the campaign for the Anambra State November governorship election.
The popularity of zoning in Anambra State politics was developed while Peter Obi was rounding off his eight years in office as the governor of the state. It was initially dismissed by his political opponents as a non-issue in the Anambra governorship election. Many stakeholders in the state are, however, beginning to realise that it is the only way to ensure equity and fair play among the three senatorial zones.

In the run up to the 2017 governorship election, the issue of zoning prevailed in all the major political parties in the state. The three major political parties, the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, (with Willie Obiano as its governorship candidate), the All Progressives Congress, APC, (with Tony Nwoye as its governorship candidate) and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, (with Oseloka Obaze as its governorship candidate), have all zoned their governorship candidate to Anambra North. This has set the stage for a bull fight in the upcoming governorship election in November.

3. No Referendum, No Election
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has threatened to stop the November 18, Anambra Governorship Elections by utilising the strategies of community evangelisation, awareness raising, rallies, posters and circulation of text messages.

Earlier proscribed by the government as a terrorist group and barely a week to the governorship election in Anambra State, members of IPOB, on Friday, November 10, marched around some streets in Onitsha, Anambra State, chanting :“if you vote you will die. Don’t go out, stay in your house,” They vowed not just to disrupt the elections but also ensure a lockdown on the day of the election on Saturday, November 18.

The IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, whose whereabouts remain unknown, earlier said that unless the Nigerian State calls for a referendum to determine the status of the country, no election will be held in Anambra State or indeed the South-east in 2019.

4. Battle Field
The Idemili North State Constituency in Anambra State elections will be held alongside the governorship election on November 18th. The following areas are considered battleground in the state, including Idemili South and North Local government areas.
Local Government Zone
Onitsha North Anambra North
Onitsha South Anambra North
Idemili South Anambra Central
Awka South Anambra Central
Ihiala Anambra South
Ekwusigo Anambra South

Notwithstanding, contest for vote will be stronger in local government areas in Anambra South Senatorial district. This is because no candidate from the three major political parties emerged from there. The three major parties will focus more in the South for votes during their campaigns and election.

5. Parties and Candidates
There are 37 political parties running in the elections with five identified as frontline candidates. They are Oseluka Obaze (PDP), Tony Nwoye (APC), Osita Chidoka (UPP), Ezemuo (PPA) and the incumbent governor Willie Obiano of APGA.
Anambra state is the first to have 37 candidates contesting for a governorship position in an election since the history of elections in Nigeria.
