Health / Re: Laugh Your Way To A Stronger Immune System by ebisinez: 10:22am On Jan 22, 2016
eyitiade:
Another simple and natural way to boost the immune system without
synthetic drugs is with Laughter. The Bible states in proverbs that
“ A merry heart does good like a medicine...”( Proverbs 17:22a) and
now scientific evidence available proves the validity of this scriptural
statement.

We all laugh but do we laugh often enough? The more time we give to
laughter or rejoicing, the more robust our immune system and the
healthier we are. This applies not just to laughter but to all positive
emotional states like joy, love, happiness, hope, faith etc. Several
researches have been done to demonstrate that positive emotions
strengthen the immune system while negative emotions tend to cause
a drop in our immunity. This observation is one of the key principles
of the new medical field of psychoneuroimmunology.

Most of the researches done on the effect of positive emotions,
especially laughter on the immune system demonstrate a marked
increase in the level of immuoglobulin A(hormonal component) in
the saliva compared to before exposure to comedy materials. Another
team of researchers Lee Berk and his associates at the School of
Medicine Loma Linda University also obtained similar findings for
other components of the immune system apart from IgA. They observed
that IgM and IgG are also increased in response to mirthful laughter. In
addition, after an hour of comedy there was an increase in the following
cellular components of the immune system:

1. Increased number of B cells
2. Increased number and activation of T cells
3. Increased number of Helper T cells
4. Increased ration of Helper/suppressor T cells
5. Increased number of and activity of Natural Killer cells(NK)
6. Increased level of gamma interferon

The above research findings demonstrates empirically that laughter has
beneficial effects on the immune system and so watching programs that
make you laugh has profound health benefits.

In the 2006 hit film/book “The Secret” a woman Cathy Goodman, gave
an account of how she overcame cancer within 3 months by affirming
constantly “Thank You for my healing” and watching funny movies.

The most famous triumph-by-laughter account was by Norman Cousins who
was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis (a degenerative disease causing
the breakdown of collagen). Given up to die within a few months in 1965 and
almost paralysed, he checked out of the hospital and moved into a motel.
From here he placed himself on a high dosage of vitamin C and continuously
watched comedy programmes. His condition gradually started to improve
until he gained the full use of his limbs and returned to his full time employment.
He lived till 1990. All from the power of laughter!

With the above examples it is clear that you can use your amuse system to
boost your immune system. By incorporating deliberate laughter in your life
you are saying Yes to a healthier life and more resistance to sickness and
diseases. Laughter today will keep the doctor away or at least reduce cost
of medicare.

This also shows that the work of our local comedians and stand up acts like
Julius Agwu, Basketmouth, Ali Baba etc. has its own health benefits and it
is to our advantage to have some of their materials at home to entertain
ourselves or even attend their shows. If you like you can go for the American
or other foreign comedy programmes like Eddie Murphy, Mr Bean, Chris Rock,
Ben Stiler etc.

The important thing is to laugh a lot and reap the benefits by any means
necessary. Your immune system will thank you for it.
