Hello cartalkers, there's a facelift 2009 benz E350 4matic I need advise on for purchase. Car is a clean first body. I took it on a test drive, no scans and everything appeared okay. Engine sounds good.

Issues on the instrument cluster are with the brakes, Abs, airbags, engine coolant and AC isn't cooling .

I'll like to know what the average cost of a Naija used example is. Owner is asking for 1.8m

HeavenlyBang:

Doesn't sound like a great idea.

Flee very fast.

Long post alert - in short, don't buy unless it's cheaper than 1m.

On a lighter note, I'm tempted to concur with the sensible advise proposed by those senior men above. But then again, if the price was 1m or less I'll advise you scan the vehicle and post codes (don't use a generic scanner, you’ll end up with what the instrument cluster is telling you, find a C3/C4 clone and it'll pull the DTCs.

For the brakes, that year model doesn't use the notorious SBC, so it may just be a brake switch or even worn brake pads (brake pad wear and tear sensors), Airbags are the more serious issue, confirm vehicle wasn't involved in an accident before (the airbag lights could come up if the SAS isn't properly calibrated after a control stalk/angle sensor replacement. Does the car's horn work or it's low pitched?

As for engine coolant, does the instrument cluster say "check coolant level"? If yes 3 things are in play here, 1. Blown head gasket 2. Leaking coolant hoses/coolant expansion tank/water pump - all of them will fail, it's only a matter of time (I can't find the post to the DIY i did sometime ago on my own, but it's somewhere here in this thread). 3. Confirm vehicle's thermostat hasn't been tampered with (easy way to check look at the temp guage, if it doesn't read it means kazeem don comot water switch/coolant temperature sensor).

As for AC - if you hold am stand, Aunty rada will sort you out. But if you're on a budget like I'm always. There are nice folks on here who will be able to provide professional direction. But be prepared, you'll most likely change that compressor, vacuum the entire system, maybe the condenser and if you're really unlucky the evaporator core. Before i forget, the expansion valve must be changed, I suffered for 600 years before Gazzuzz pointed me in that direction.
Don't worry about the HVAC's electrical system - that SAM was built to code, I read somewhere that it is the last electrical component that dies on the W211.

Oh, here's a picture of my W211's instrument cluster - my kid brother's mantra is if it dies, then it dies !

Can you name one or two that you consider the best to '' park our cash in '' I know of Stanbic assets managers, is there any other better?

Stay with Stanbic Asset Managers, it's very easy to keep track of your portfolio especially if you're always on the move (and invest in more than one offering, plan or instrument). Better app interface, more responsive customer care and besides less queues at physical branches in the event that sh*t hits the fan and you want to redeem more than the limit allowable online.

Did I forget to mention that redemption requests are processed faster than Zenith. I use both, had to diversify my small portfolio a while back, in retrospect I should have kept everything with Stanbic.

Hi guys, if you were to recommend a Benz for a first time car buyer, i mean my very first car; which would you recommend??

My brother look at the w203s advertised by chukel and Philadelphia, I believe their cost may fall well within your budget.

Dear Shortgun, HeavenlyBang responded to the OP's RFI or need for recommendation/clarification as to which Benz he should go for if he earns #1,800,000 p.a. There's no need for us to always fight on here, I love Benz's but as long as I can't currently afford my dream 3 pointed star without credit, I've learnt to be practical. Note, assuming this #1.8M isn't tax free, then the OP's net salary on a monthly basis becomes #137,033.33 - the tax burden of #12,966.67 will easily give him fuel to last 2 weeks if he picks a puny engine and doesn't do much driving.

Hopefully, he plans on buying a toks. This will definitely offset any major maintenance costs in the first 9-18 months of ownership. And for the love of God, my brother maintaining a Nigerian used Benz or Bimmer made after 2000 isn't cheap for the average Nigerian.

UBA & Access bank has been on my case to collect loan. Text messages & emails every now & then..

Chief, they need you to take those loans. Zenith and Stanbic have been offering some good deals lately but I'm willing to hold on for 27% for a 3 year repayment plan with just a 1 month moratorium. If not, I go continue to look those Federal Government CBN schemes - proper value for money imho.

Please I've not collected loan before, I am asking for your advice.

A loan firm offers me a loan of N708,508

Monthly repayment:
N26,330.70

Will be Deducted from monthly salary. For 3 years

So I will be paying back N947,880
While The loan is N708,508

A difference or interest I am paying back is N239,372.

Please do you people consider this fair?

Long post alert wink
Pardon me, my finance is rusty but let me try.

If you borrow #708,508 from a "loan firm" for three years and you're expected to pay #239,372 in interest for those years, your stated interest rate is almost 34%. Here's the calculation:

E.R on a S.I Loan = Interest/Principal = #239,372/#708,508 = 33.7%

A monthly payment of #26,330.70 means your loan's annual interest rate is close to 20%

In 3 years? 33.7% interest is on the high side, because of the 3 year tenor - this is quite understandable from the loan firm's perspective. The true position is that this loan's collateral is largely dependent on you earning your keep for the next 3 years even though this is not explicitly stated in the signed terms!

Read more or walk into a proper bank and ask the account officer to explain the marginal cost of lending rate. You see, when it comes to giving out loans, banks quickly revert to the 'buy low, sell high strategy' - The CBN's MPR is at 13.5 per cent and the Apex bank's minimum LDR for commercial banks has been increased to 65%, all this is aimed at compelling banks to increase their credit capacity, mainly to SMEs and individuals with proper credit scores. Banks are in a race against time to find agricultural entrepreneurs and farmers, talk to them there may be a better Annual Percentage Rate or package (effective rate of interest) somewhere and since it's your salary account, talk to other banks if you can easily migrate the account to another bank (I understand this is a risky maneuver for public servants) assuming you are one.

Personally, I'm currently weighing offers from Stanbic and Zenith.

Hmm, a Corolla really shouldn't be getting under 25mpg combined, I'd say. With a 13.2 gallon tank, that's about 320 miles range.

Wetin you dey try do? Paddle shifters? Steering angle sensor?

Hit a pothole while flashing my high beams at an oncoming vehicle on my way to Calabar from Makurdi early last week, I think the impact broke my stalk and the high beams have been on permanently since then. Once I turn on the vehicle they stay on, till I turn off the ignition. So, I hit up oluwaseunla and he provided the replacement parts, you should try him!

That's poor economy for a Corolla. There are plenty possible reasons for that, though.

240 miles is approximately 390 kms for a 50 litre tank or thereabout? I usually average 440-450 for an 09 Corolla. I don't see plenty wrong with his fuel consumption for an older car especially if he uses AC always for his city runs.

Besides I'll kill to average that 390 kms City driving for a 72 litre Charger with no codes and problems. Currently I can only achieve 410-430 on highway driving before the reserve light comes on. And at the very best 320 city driving before the yellow light blinks.

Make him no follow wetin oyinbo write, even an IS 250 i occasionally drive struggles to do 340km city driving on a full tank.

In other news, I dey do one DIY with my ol' boy now. We don pause, dey watch YouTube first. grin grin No mind the riced floor mats and steering wheel, the cost between dis one and the normal ones bin no plenty - E be things!

The W140 is a better built vehicle, it's a full sized limousine some even came with double glazed glasses and better quality leather upholstery and won't suffer similar reliability issues the W210 suffered from.

The W210 suffered from extensive rust issues.

Personally, I'd do the W140 if I'm to choose between both.

Hello Guys, pls I need a good mechanic with expertise in Lexus. I bought a Lexus RX 330 Nigerian used about a month ago and gave it to my "trusted" mechanic to put it in good shape. I spent over 200k and now it's not working well as expected. When i am on speed and want to brake, the steering shakes so violently and the hand is never straight, if I take my hands off the steering, it starts to veer to the left. I tried another mechanic but he seems not to be getting it also.

Kindly assist with the contact of a Good Mechanic in Lagos.

Check your rotors, tyres and wheels first. As for the second part, you're spoilt for choice.

End this charade already.

"Beware people who think the only two options are we quarantine until there’s a vaccine or you want people to die."

“There are TWO OPTIONS and people will DIE from both. One is create a herd immunity and the second is lockdown. One allows for freedom while the other increases poverty, depression, anxiety, suicide."

There will be no vaccine, at least not this year.

Start coming to terms with that reality and it’s implications.
