Former Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid star Gareth Bale has announced his retirement from football. Bale had captained Wales at the World Cup in Qatar.
Gareth Bale has announced his retirement from club and international football with immediate effect.

The ex-Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid star, who most recently played for MLS side LAFC, wrote in a statement on Monday: "After careful and thoughtful consideration, I announce my immediate retirement from club and international football. I feel incredibly fortunate to have realised my dream of playing the sport I love.

"It has truly given me some of the best moments of my life. The highest of highs over 17 seasons, that will be impossible to replicate, no matter what the next chapter has in store for me. From my very first touch at Southampton to my last with LAFC and everything in between, shaped a club career that I have an immense pride and gratitude for.

"Playing for and captaining my country 111 times has truly been a dream come true. To show my gratitude to all of those that have played their part along this journey, feels like an impossibility. I feel indebted to many people for helping to change my life and shape my career in a way I couldn't have ever dreamed of when I first started out at 9 years old. The Deputy Director, Public Affairs of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, Kehinde Bamigbetan, and his counterpart in the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Cuncil, Anthony Ehilebo, have said that the endorsement of the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has no electoral value.

The APC and PDP chieftains made this known in an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme on Monday morning, monitored by our correspondent.

Bamigbetan said that Obasanjo’s endorsement would not change anything adding that the former president is entitled to his own personal opinions.

He further stated that Obasanjo would not be able to deliver his polling booth to the Labour Party candidate, Obi.
“Obasanjo endorsing Obi makes no difference. We have seen it coming and we are not surprised that he took that step because we have seen the signs. It will not translate to votes because Obasanjo said it. He (Obasanjo) will not even be able to deliver his polling booth in Abeokuta to Obi.”

When asked if the endorsement had any electoral value, Bamigbetan said, “It has no electoral value. We know it is a project that he (Obasanjo) has been working on for the past two, three years and it will soon blow up in his face.”

Similarly the PDP campaign council member, Ehilabo, said that nobody would notice Obasanjo’s endorsement of Obi.
Ehilabo said, “Nobody is going to know what Obasanjo says, his opinion would not even be heard in my village. It’s not going to sway any votes. He is an opinion leader, he is entitled to his opinion.

“The pragmatic choice for Nigerians would be who can get us out of this position and who has done it before.”

The PUNCH reported on Sunday that Obasanjo in a letter to Nigerians endorsed Obi as his choice candidate for president ahead of the 2023 presidential election in February.
In the 2023 New Year message signed by the former President and made available to newsmen by his aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo described Obi as his mentee and said the former Anambra State governor had an edge in the 2023 elections.

Obasanjo said, “None of the contestants is a saint but when one compares their character, antecedent, their understanding, knowledge, discipline, and vitality that they can bring to bear and the great efforts required to stay focused on the job, particularly looking at where the country is today and with the experience on the job that I personally had, Peter Obi as a mentee has an edge.

“Others like all of us have what they can collectively contribute to the new dispensation to liberation, restoration and salvaging of Nigeria.

“One other important point to make about Peter is that he is a needle with thread attached to it from North and South and he may not get lost.

“In other words, he has people who can pull his ears, if and when necessary. He has a young and able running mate with a clean track record of achievement both in public and private life.”

A former Governor of Sokoto State and leader of the All Progressive Congress in the state, Aliyu Wamakko, has revealed that the APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, was brought in to ensure the unity of the country is sustained.

Wamakko stated this while addressing the leadership of resident communities and the council of Obas in the state, who paid him a solidarity visit in his Gawon Nama home in Sokoto.

Wamakko, while welcoming the two groups said Nigeria is one indivisible nation adding, “therefore, Sokoto is a home to all the tribes irrespective of where one comes from.”

He said “Nigeria is for all of us hence the need to come together and work for a better tomorrow.”

Senator Wamakko explained that when he was the governor of the state, he abolished what was then called school fees for non-indigenes in the State.

He further revealed that, he also appointed one of them to serve as his special adviser in his government just to ensure that they were carried along.

He assured them that APC would consider them in its affairs if given the mandate come the 2023 polls.

Meanwhile, the council of obas and the resident's communities in Sokoto State had thrown their full weight behind the candidates of the All Progressives Congress in the state.

Speaking during their visit, the Chairman of the Council of Obas, Alhaji  Surajudeen Sahabi, who spoke on behalf of the association informed the senator that on their part, they were ready to work together with the APC leadership towards ensuring the success of the party come 2023 elections in Nigeria, especially the presidential candidate of the party, Tinubu and the APC governorship candidate in Sokoto State, Ahmed Sokoto, among other candidates of the party.

Similarly, the Association of Sokoto State Residents Community under the leadership of Alhaji Salmanu Oke, explained to Wamakko that they came to register their unflinching support towards supporting APC during the forthcoming polls.
