Amid the advocacy for inclusive and widespread participation in the 2023 elections, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Benue state are demanding payment from the electorate attempting to obtain their permanent voter cards (PVCs).

Although INEC’s guidelines on voter registration frown against the act, TheCable observed that there is a charge attached to voter registration in Oju LGA of Benue, a situation which discourages residents from undertaking the process.

Susan Abari, 25, is an indigene of Ebenta village. She travelled from Zaria in Kaduna state, where she is based, to enrol for her PVC, but rather than get it without a cost, she was asked to pay a fee of N300.

“This is my first time ever, I have not done PVC before and I was told by my people that to do PVC is free,” Abari told TheCable.

“When I got to the office, I met a crowd outside complaining. Amongst them were women, youths and even elderly men. A lot of them went back home. I found out later.

“I waited a few minutes until it was my turn. When I sat down, the first thing they did was ask me for money. I was surprised. I was not expecting it. Seeing that I was hesitant to respond, the enroller got angry and asked me to stand up and leave the seat.

“I couldn’t pay so I left.”

Unlike Abari who refused to pay, Samuel, 19, thought it necessary to cooperate and collect his PVC. Samuel said nothing will stop him from voting in the 2023 elections — even if he has to bribe INEC officials.

“At the time they sent people out of the room, I knew I had to pay,” he said. “Although we were told that it is supposed to be free. However, what is happening here is different and it looks like nobody is saying anything.

“I paid N300. According to what I heard, the N300 is for the data and for slip lamination.”

The moment Nelson, an INEC official, received money from an enrollee.

Like Samuel, Ode Ruth was willing to make the payment, but when she reached into her purse, she could only find N200.

“They were unwilling to collect. It was at that time I ran back home to borrow N100 to add,” Ruth said.

According to the INEC guidelines, fresh voter registration is free and can be done for anyone above 18 in the designated location approved by the electoral body.

However, an INEC official in Oju LGA, who identified himself as Mr Nelson, said the government is no longer providing funds for internet accessibility.

“Because we need to keep the office running, [and] we have a limited time frame to enrol people,” Nelson said.

“It is why we are collecting N300. But when we go to a community, it’s a different thing.”

Fast-rising Nigeran singer, Portable has taken to social media to call out Grammy award-winning singer, Burna Boy for using his content without his approval, IGBERETV reports.

Senate Chief Whip Orji Uzor Kalu has stated there is nothing wrong if the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, runs a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

Kalu, who spoke while answering questions from reporters at the Senate, said it would be politically naive for Tinubu, a minority Muslim from the South-West, to choose a minority Christian from the North as his running mate.

THERE was tension in Benin-City, yesterday, after  a hawker, whose identity was not known but believed to be from the northern region of the country, inflicted a machete cut on an Igbo trader identified as Anthony Jibunor.

The incident led to violence as a mob descended on the assailant and would have been lynched but for the timely intervention of a vigilante group before the arrival of security personnel.
But Edo State Police Command said the assailant was a mad man.

A statement by the Edo State Command’ s Police Public Relations Officer, Chidi Nwabuzor, said:
The Edo State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that its aware of the incident that occurred today being Saturday, 11th June 2022 where a young man whose name and address are unknown but profiled to be a mad man used cutlass to inflict bodily injuries on one Mr. Anthony Jibunor ‘M’ of No. 116 Mission Road, Benin City, Edo State.

“Immediately, the command received the distress call, Command Tactical Teams, Patrol Teams from various Police Divisional Headquarters and their various Divisional Police Officers in and around New Benin Police Divisional Headquarters were dispatched to the scene to bring down something seemly to riotous situation to normal and for protection of lives and property.

“The contingent of policemen that were dispatched to the scene met the assailant who was already in the hands of angry mob that beat hell out of him and the victim who the assailant brutally cut with a cutlass. The assailant and his victim were rescued from the angry mob and both of them taken to undisclosed hospitals (for security reasons) for medical treatment. “The good news so far, is that, both the victim and the assailant are in good stable medical condition.”

Nigerians want him and the only thing we can do for him is to encourage him to answer the call of Nigerians. So, he will contest and I’m sure he will win, all things being equal.

“Today, Nigerians want change and Peter Obi has been seen as a symbol of that change, so the issue of structure people talk about does not arise. The last time they asked him about the structure of his party, he said Nigerians across the country were the structure and that is the greatest structure.”

Asked how Obi intends to defeat Atiku and Tinubu, the media aide told PUNCH, “What is happening in Nigeria today is a peaceful revolution. Nigerians want to break away from the old order. Nigeria is ripe for a peaceful transition and Peter Obi is lucky to be at the forefront of that change.”

He stated that Nigerians, including northerners, were desirous of good governance.

Suspected bandits in the early hours of Monday June 6, 2022 attacked Efab Mini-Estate inside the bigger Genuine Estate in the Federal Capital Territory and operated from 1am to 4am before abducting several residents of the estate.

Lawmaker identifies those behind massacre

The representative of Owo Constituency in the Ondo State House of Assembly, Olayemi Adeyemi, has alleged that herdsmen were responsible for the killing of worshippers at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Owo, Owo Local Government Area of the state.

“This is a reprisal attack to send a diabolical message to the Governor.”

Gunmen had invaded the church on Sunday, using guns and explosives to cut down over 50 worshippers, including children.

Adeyemi said the attack was a reprisal for the decision of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu to send away Fulani pastoralists from the area.

He said: “Fulani herdsmen entered our community and started shooting.

“They killed about 28 people and dozens were severely injured.

We have dozens of injured people at Federal Medical Centre, Owo and I am on my way there now to see the victims.

“We have enjoyed improved security since herdsmen were driven away from our forests by this administration.

“This is a reprisal attack to send a diabolical message to the Governor.”

Presidential aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has said his recent speech, in Abeokuta, on his presidential ambition did not demonstrate any disrespect to President Muhammadu Buhari.

A statement signed by the Director, Media and Communications, Tinubu Presidential Campaign Organisation, Bayo Onanuga, Friday said, no time did Tinubu play any ethnic card or denigrate any ethnic group.

He noted that the main thrust of Tinubu’s presentation was that his huge contributions to the formation and electoral success of the ruling APC should count in his favour, as a true party man who desires to be the flag bearer.

“That is surely out of his character, as Engineer David Babachir Lawal, attested in his viral whatsApp statement. Tinubu’s speech did not demonstrate any disrespect to Buhari for whom he has a very high regard, and whose re-election campaign he chaired in 2019.

“Since the video of the speech he delivered in Yoruba hit the social media, varied interpretations have been given to the speech, which in the main was about Governor Abiodun, who in the true tradition of Yoruba culture bowed to his leader after Tinubu’s short speech,” the statement partly read.

According to Onanuga, the fresh conditions proposed by President Muhammadu Buhari for the consideration of a presidential candidate of the party made it necessary for Asiwaju to labour to convince the delegates that he fits the bill.

“We are least surprised that he is the target of well-calculated and most unkind virulent attacks,” he said.

He described the former Lagos governor as a great party man and remains the man to beat at the party’s convention on Monday.

“In his effort to convince the party delegates to vote for him at the primaries, he went down memory lane to provide specific instances when he brought his political clout and strategic skills to assist individuals, groups and tendencies in the party to gain political power.

“These factual references are already in the public realm. They have been reported and analysed in the media in the last eight years. They are therefore matters of public knowledge,” he said.

Meanwhile, the campaign organisation has appealed to the media to avoid over-sensationalising issues of facts and play its constitutional role of informing the electorate to make informed choices at the presidential primaries.
