An individual who recently returned from the United Kingdom was identified as one of the victims of the explosion in Ibadan on Tuesday night. The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, confirmed the death of two people and injuries to 77 individuals due to the incident. Eyewitnesses, including Ayode Jajaye, a resident of the Housing Estate at Adeyi Avenue, Bodija, revealed that the UK returnee was the son of one of the landlords in the area. Jajaye called on the government to investigate the incident, expressing concern about the casualties and damages. Governor Makinde attributed the explosion to illegal mining, and investigations are ongoing.

The spokesman to Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, Mallam Isa Gusau, is dead.

Gusau, also the spokesman to the present Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, when he was the governor of Borno State, died on Thursday, January 11, at an Indian hospital.

A source who spoke to ThisDay on the demise said Zulum’s spokesperson has been on admission at the specialist hospital in New Delhi for over a month, battling a protracted illness.

The source said: “We have lost Isa to the cold hands of death, he was unconscious for about three days, we were all praying for his recovery but it was quite unfortunate that we lost him this evening (yesterday) in the hospital in New Delhi, India.”

Gusau was said to be actively involved in the governor’s publicity, right from his sick bed in India, issuing statements to promote his boss.


The Borno State government is yet to make an official statement regarding the death, and it is unclear if Gusau’s remains will be brought home for interment.

Gov Zulum Announces 30% Salary Increment For Section Of Borno Workers
Meanwhile, Zulum has announced a 30% salary increment for some selected workers in the state.

According to the governor, the state government health workers who have dedicated themselves to serving in rural areas will receive a 30 per cent increase in their current salaries.

This declaration was made during the commencement of the distribution of N100,000 and food items to elderly individuals aged 65 and above as part of the Renewed Hope Initiative led by the First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu.

Governor Zulum emphasized that this initiative is a testament to his administration’s commitment to supporting the elderly population in every possible way.

In addition, the state government will ensure the availability of specialized physicians who are trained in providing healthcare services to the elderly across various health facilities in the state

‘Mummy Be Calming Down’: Neighbours met husband on top of wife’s body – Police

Controversy is trailing the purported suicide of the woman in a viral ‘Mummy Be Calming Down’ video, Toluige Olokoobi Babalola, as the Edo State Police said reports from the husband of the woman and those of his neighbours contradicted.

The woman and her son became internet sensations after a video showed the little boy on his knees in 2020 frantically begging his mother after offending her.

In the video, the little boy was seen crying and begging his mom to ‘calm down and rest a little’ before taking any action against him.

On Tuesday this week, an X user disclosed that Toluige committed suicide in Benin, Edo State due to unknown reasons claiming that he was at the scene of the incident on Monday afternoon.

Speaking on the issue in the Edo State Command Headquarters of the Nigerian Police in Benin City, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Chidi Nwabuzor said the account of the husband of the deceased, Mr Lawal, and that of his neigbhours differed.

Nwabuzor also said this has made the State Commissioner of Police, Muhammed Adamu Dankwara launch an investigation into the issue.

According to Nwabuzor, “On the 8th of November 2023, the husband by name Lawal reported to the Evbuotubu Division in Benin City, Edo State that he returned from the market and met his child of two years old by the name Ife Lawal crying.

“Immediately he burst the door open and saw the wife on a rope tied to the ceiling so he loosed it and cried out to the neighbours who came and accompanied him to the hospital where the wife was confirmed dead and immediately deposited at a hospital mortuary in Benin City.

“Thereafter, he went to the Evbuotubu police station to report the incident, the DPO while responding to that case went with his operatives to the house where they recovered the rope and suicide note allegedly written by the late woman.”

He further said, “From there, the DPO went down with him to the hospital to check the body of the deceased if there was a mark of violence. With all diligence, the DPO checked and there was no mark of violence.

“Based on this, the Commissioner of Police, Edo state CP Muhamed Adamu Dankara directed the DPO to immediately transfer the case to SCID for further investigation.

“There are issues alleged and there are so many sides of the coin, the husband said the neigbhours came upon his outcry and helped him to lose the woman.

“The neigbhours are saying ‘No! We did not know anything about loosing the woman’ that when he shouted, we came and met him lying on top of the woman.

“There are so many issues, that is why the Commissioner of Police in his wisdom ordered for investigation.

“Moreso when there was a report from the DPO that there was no mark of violence, one would have expected in all truism that the woman that died of hanging, the mark of the rope will be there, that is the mark of violence we are talking about so he is under investigation.”

The Presidency has reacted to the nominations of Nigerian singers in the 66th edition of the Grammy Awards.

In a post via his verified X handle on Friday night, presidential aide, Bayo Onanuga congratulated the singers for their achievements.

A journalist employed by Daybreak Newspapers Nigeria in Kaduna State has once again been rearrested and detained for the second time due to his investigative news report highlighting the deteriorated and poor conditions of the 2023 Mando Hajj exercise.

Internet, phones ‘completely’ shut off in Gaza


Internet and phone networks were down across the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, the Palestinian telecommunications agency said, in the second such blackout in the besieged territory in less than a week.

“To our good people in the beloved country, we are sorry to announce that communications and internet services have been completely cut off in Gaza,” the Palestine Telecommunications Company (Paltel) said on X.

Global network monitor Netblocks confirmed that Gaza “is in the midst of a new internet blackout with high impact to the last remaining major operator, Paltel.

“The incident will be experienced as a total loss of telecommunications by most residents,” it said in a post on X.


An AFP journalist in Gaza confirmed the loss of communications, adding that his phone still had signal because he was using an international SIM card.

Another AFP journalist said only people with Israeli or Egyptian phone lines could still use their mobiles in the border town of Rafah.


Internet and phone networks were completely cut last week but were restored at the weekend.


The government of Palestinian militant group Hamas had at the time accused Israel of causing the shutdown in order to “perpetrate massacres” in the Gaza Strip.

Palestinian telecoms provider Jawwal had blamed Israel’s “heavy bombardment” of the territory for the blackout.

Gaza has in recent days seen fierce battles between Israeli ground troops and militants as Israel has pressed its mission to “crush” Hamas after it went on a rampage in southern communities killing 1,400 people, mostly civilians.

He then attended the Nigerian Law School, Lagos, and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1985. Justice Okoro began his legal career as Magistrate Grade II in 1986, eventually rising to the position of Chief Magistrate Grade I in 1996. He later served as a Judge of the High Court of Akwa Ibom State from 1998-2006 and was elevated to the Court of Appeal in 2006. He has served on various tribunals and has participated in numerous seminars, workshops, and conferences. Justice Okoro was elevated to the Supreme Court on November 15, 2013, and is currently the fourth most senior justice of the court.

**Justice Uwani Musa Abba-Aji**
Justice Uwani Musa Abba-Aji is the most senior female jurist on the Supreme Court bench and the only woman on the panel. She was born on November 7, 1956, in Gashua, Yobe State. Her educational journey took her through Central Primary School in Gashua and Government Girls Secondary School in Maiduguri. She earned a Diploma in Law from Ahmadu Bello University, followed by an L.L.B (Hons) from the same institution in 1980. Justice Abba-Aji was called to the Bar in 1981 and began her career as a State Counsel in 1982. She held various positions within the judicial system, rising through the ranks to become the Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal Kaduna Division before her elevation to the Supreme Court on January 8, 2019.

**Justice Mohammed Lawal Garba**
Justice Mohammed Lawal Garba was born on November 16, 1958, in Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State. He received his education in various institutions, including Demonstration Primary School in Maru, Government Secondary School in Gusau, and Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria. He obtained a Bachelor of Law degree from A.B.U, Zaria in 1980 and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1981. Justice Garba's career started as a Magistrate in the Sokoto State Judiciary, and he later served as Deputy Chief Registrar in the High Court of Justice, Sokoto State, and Solicitor-General/Director-General of the Ministry of Justice, Sokoto State. He became a Judge of the High Court of Justice, Sokoto State, and later the Chief Judge of the High Court of Justice, Zamfara State. In 2004, he was elevated to the Court of Appeal and served in various divisions. He is a member of several legal bodies and was elevated to the Supreme Court on November 6, 2020.

A group representing the Hausa people of Nigeria's Hausa land sharply disagrees with their Fulani counterparts regarding the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister's decision to employ an Israeli security outfit in Abuja.

The Hausa ethnic tribe, operating under the banner of the Hausa People of Hausaland Emancipator, has publicly expressed their support for the move by FCT Minister Barrister Enyesom Wike to engage an Israeli security outfit in Abuja, as well as any other security measures deemed necessary.

In a statement released on Friday and signed by the group's leader, Haj. Kalthoum Alumbe Jitami of the Hausa People of Hausaland Emancipator, they have accused Fulani elites and clerics of spreading misleading notions about Israel being an enemy.

Coincidentally, the sad incident of an alleged blasphemy accusation against me, for reposting a viral video of Hamas’ Son, Mosab Hassan Yousef, unfolded on a Friday morning in Kaduna, specifically during the Jumat prayer day.

The controversy was primarily fueled by my Muslim journalist colleagues, notably a former chairman of the Kaduna State council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), along with other colleagues who also practiced the Muslim faith.

The trouble began when some of my Muslim colleagues, upon seeing the video of Hamas’ Son, which I had reposted in the general WhatsApp group of the Kaduna journalists’ forum on a Thursday, reacted negatively, emotionally, and in an uncivilized and biased manner.

The viral video was titled “Son of Hamas Exposes Muhammad” and was both audible and visually clear. In the video, Hamas’ Son was not alone; he was addressing like-minded Muslims about the history of intolerance in the religion of Islam and its leader.

In this approximately 15-minute video, Hamas’ Son extensively discussed the religious intolerance within Islam, linking it to the brief teachings of Prophet Muhammad’s jihad.

I had gone to bed for the night, and by the time I woke up the following day, which was Friday, I discovered that I had been removed from the Kaduna journalists’ WhatsApp group. The group chat had already been inundated with reactions and counter-reactions, all directed at me.

Nollywood actress and producer, Moyo Lawal, has reassured her fans that she is still waxing strong following the unauthorised release of her sex tape in September.

Lawal made headlines when her private video was leaked on social media in September.

Although she had since stated that she planned to take legal action against whoever leaked the tape, Lawal also identified the man in the video with her as an ex-fiance.

“I want to emphasise that this video done with my ex I was to marry at that time was never intended for public consumption, and its unauthorised distribution is a breach of my boundaries.”

In a new Instagram post on Sunday, the ‘A Time To Heal’ actress shed more light on life weeks after her sex tape was leaked.

The post partly read, “One thing I can tell you for a fact is that things are never what they seem to be. I only had Bleep twice last year; one of those times was the video that I agreed to because he started recording after the fact he doesn’t live in Nigeria.

“He put a lot of work into winning my trust over the years, and I mean a lot. So much so we were already working towards a house, marriage and all.”

Lawal also addressed trolls who claimed she released the video herself.

“Meanwhile, to the set of unbelievers who thought I released that video because of a foolish narrative that started because I didn’t point fingers or start trash-talking or blaming anyone and stayed quiet to end it all quickly, I honestly don’t know what to tell you.

Fear gripped residents of the Dolphin estate in Lagos State after a huge python was killed last night for invading the home of one of the residents.

According to one of the estate residents, Olaudah Equiano, the snake was killed in a property occupied by a known young man who was absent but had a driver who lives in the boys’ quarter of the building.

The driver was in the boys’ quarters, which had a weak ceiling where the python came to lie and fell into the house.

The driver, apparently afraid called the owner to notify him that there was a huge snake in his house.

The owner of the property immediately called a friend in Parkview estate who came in with a licenced shot gun, and killed the python instantly.

In the video shared on social media by Olaudah, residents can be seen celebrating after the huge snake was killed.

In other news, Raynus Henry Ebiegberi, a wildlife conservationist recently shared photos on social media of a shark fish caught in Bayelsa State.

The incident occurred in Akassa community in Brass Local Government Area of the state.

Unfortunately, the shark was dead on arrival.
