Music/Radio / Re: Nigerian Artistes And Poor Live Performances by ego(f): 1:40pm On Sep 30, 2006
I understand the issues, i must say that having been at concerts both in and outside Nigeria, we still have a lot of work to do.
A live performance set needs more than just music. A live band can change the way a performance is perceived i tell you. but how many artistes can afford a band? they often resort to soundtracks or miming (yes RUKUS they do mime sometimes)
Then there is sound engineering like TOLALA said. it really is a big issue. We focus too much on the artiste and not enough on the people who 'make' the artistes.
Nobody thinks that lights, graphics and effects matter much but they really do.
So you see, it's quite a whole package that needs to be looked into.
But while we're complaining, some support for our local artists please? They're doing great work and if we attend more of their concerts and support their efforts, the encouragement will go a long way to making them better.
Trust me, I know, I'm one of them.
Dating And Meet-up Zone / Re: Can Nairaland Produce A Couple? by ego(f): 6:42pm On Sep 08, 2006
A wedding eh? wow! I think it's nice that people who meet via internet could hook up and even get married. isn't net dating supposed to be all fantasy though? how much of it can really be real? I'm thinking this way cos online dating is so, so, it's just so impersonal, it's MEANT to be impersonal. Everyone is supposed to remain anonymous and behind their computer screens then you can be who you want to be, say what you want and leave without regrets, but: A WEDDING!! wow! post photos so we can see oh! wink
Fashion / Re: Girls' New Dress Code: Wear Your Trousers To Show Your Underpants! by ego(f): 6:36pm On Apr 13, 2006
I'm surprised that men complain about the way women dress. I dress decently and get asked why i don't try to look more 'attractive'. Well, Think about it. Women are supposed to dress to attract attention. If not from a man who's straight laced, then at least from a man who'll pay her a little attention(and, if she's lucky, put some bling in her ears or in her wallet)
I have not heard of anything designed for women: clothes shoes, bags, makeup, underwear, perfume, for which the designer does not strive to attach the word 'sexy' to. And what for? to attract the opposite sex of course.
So the next time you're wondering why a woman's ass is showing, it's so that you'll notice and pay attention.
If it gets too much, look away, in digust, in disdain, in disagreement, and if every man looks away everytime, one day you'll wake up and never see an ass or underwear showing through clothes again.
But, men being men,

Literature / Re: Robert Ludlum Or John Grisham? by ego(f): 5:25pm On Mar 29, 2006
I think kinglarry is rather cruel to make me compare two of my favourite, nay two of the world's greates writers.
But i must agree that Ludlum is kinda predictable. Grisham has managed to shock me with almost every story, and at first i thought 'how many stories can you weave around a courtroom'.
I didn't expect 'A Painted House' though. Have any of you read it?

Travel / Re: Is Life Really Better Abroad? by ego(f): 5:14pm On Mar 29, 2006
The topic of this post should change to 'is life really better in the US?'.
I took a poll in my office and most people would rather live in Nigeria, but then most of them have not travelled beyond our borders, they may yet change their minds.
If you poll Nigerians living outside the country, most would probably complain about taxes, ill-treatment and so on, but very few would admit to life being better in Nigeria. So where does this leave us?
I believe it all depends on what we want from life.

Contrary to what Blacknbold says, Money is not more available abroad than it is at home. There are Nigerians who earn 7thousand naira a month, spend 10 on transportation and still manage to eat, house and clothe themselves and their families (don't look at me like that, you know people who live like I just described).

Perhaps it's the conveniences electricity, water, but before these were available, we didn't miss them did we? We managed to do incredible stuff like build pyramids out of groundnuts, villagers drinking from streams outlive us town folk by decades, so are we better off with our light and water?

Safety?  when we're attacked in Lagos, we move abroad, and get splattered all over the highway courtesy of the suicide bomber who was sharing our seat on the bus.

I agree that Nigeria is one great big study in contradictions. Nothing works, yet everything functions. Poor as dirt, incredibly wealthy. But, that's the beauty of us. We make the most of what we've got. Take it from someone who has lived outside of Nigeria and has chosen to come home: Life is not better anywhere, It's what you make of it right there where you are.

@ Bella Rouge
By the time the choice is up to you, come and visit. You might like it enough to stay, or be cured of your home sickness  wink

Travel / Re: What Countries Would You Like To Visit? by ego(f): 12:38pm On Feb 17, 2006
I would like to visit every part of the world. Every continent if not every country. There's always something new, different and exciting about other countries: the history is always different, the people, the air smells different. You'll be surprised at how far you can go on a lean budget. I've seen a few countries in West Africa, Some in the Southern Axis of Africa, the US, this year it's some countries in Europe and hopefully North Africa, if the pocket agrees, there may be some other African destination. Next year it's South America and/or Asia. Australia will take a while and the Middle East is on a prolonged postponement for obvious reasons. But i love the humid air and bustle of Lagos international and the almost inactive dryness of Abuja International when i come home. I think I like to travel cos i like the feeling of coming home.

@ The Brain: Thanks for the great post about the maldives. Probably will see it sometime soon if God gives the strength

Business / Re: Can One Be 'Comfortable' Without Being Rich? by ego(f): 11:22am On Oct 13, 2005
Kazey has raised a very pertinent issue about being comfortable in Nigeria. Reading your posts, I would, however, disagree with Uatuku that it’s impossible to live comfortably in Africa, let alone Nigeria.

What if I said that all you needed was a source of income? What if I told you that a little consistency with your finances could afford you the basic necessities of life on the smallest income? Like Diakim rightly said, one must be able to pay one’s bills on time.

For those of us who live in developing countries, the idea of living on credit would raise brows and a lot of people would swear “NEVER!”; that it’s impossible for the Western model of lifestyle to be implanted in Nigeria (of all places) and they would prefer to go to the UK or USA to live a life of ease and comfort…ON CREDIT! Credit is crucial for any economy as it mobilizes resources that can be used in other productive ventures and encourages the growth of the private sector- a strong indicator of a developing economy.

It’s why life is comfortable in developed countries. Not because the people are rich, but because they’ve learned how to be financially responsible especially where it concerns credit. With a regular paying job, they can afford the basics and some luxuries on a few dollars or pounds a month.

Take this scenario: Say you earn 10,000 naira a month and need to cater for a wife and two kids. Even if you were single, it would still be difficult to maintain a ‘comfortable’ lifestyle every purchase is cash-based and payment is usually upfront or pre-paid. One would have to take into account food, accommodation, education, clothing, transportation, etc. So you borrow from friends/family and struggle along or you try to run your own business which would take up time from your work which would affect your productivity which could get you fired or you do like Anini and invest in a shotgun and rob people who travel on the night bus.

But Imagine that you earn the same amount, you can pay your rent in little bits over a 12 month period, your children’s fees over a 3month period, and there’s even this new Toyota you’ve been eyeing can be bought and financed over a period of time… would make a difference wouldn’t it? It would mean that you could own everything you cannot immediately afford and pay for it in little installments and still have some cash in your pocket to take the kids to Mister Biggs and invest with! This is long overdue.

One major factor by which this can be achieved is through the service of a credit referencing agency.XDS Solutions is a risk solutions company that runs a Credit Referencing Agency and it is based in Abuja, Nigeria. Luckily, the CBN and the banking industry have found it necessary to formulate policies for the successful operation of such an agency. With such structures in place, the improvement of banking logistics, credit education, technology and the proper capture of credit information, the concept of a comfortable life for the ordinary, honest Nigerian is just within reach.

Thank you for your patience in reading this looong piece.
