It was released on 26 August 2016 by Wolf Tone and Caroline International in Europe, and Harvest Records in the United States.[15] The album received critical acclaim for its "sense of wonder", and "immediate impression", though it was also met with some mixed reactions, from critics who felt it was somewhat premature.[16] There are a total of 11 songs on the track listing, along with 11 characters illustrated on the cover art. Each song, along with its unique personality and quirks, represents a person on the album. The album was nominated for the 2017 Mercury Prize.

It was produced by Peter Tägtgren in Abyss Studios.[1] Like Sabaton's previous album Heroes, The Last Stand is a concept album and takes inspiration from "last stand" military battles. On 10 June 2016 the first single "The Lost Battalion" was released, followed by "Blood of Bannockburn" on 15 July and "Shiroyama" on 12 August. A lyric video for the title track was released on 25 January 2018. The Last Stand is the final Sabaton album to feature guitarist Thobbe Englund, who played his last concert on the band's own Sabaton Open Air festival on 20 August 2016, the day after the album's release.
