Sports / Re: All You Need To Know About The Uefa Nations League by ElvisThePundit: 7:11pm On Sep 08, 2018
I feel it's a nice concept too, but I have doubts about it's sustainability.

Lower ranked countries in the leagues might not like the idea of being stuck playing matches against countries of similar strength until competition warm ups, when they could easily arrange grade A friendlies with top nations from other continents.

WHAT IS THE UEFA NATIONS LEAGUE?

The Nations League is a competition created by UEFA to improve competition among its member states, and reduce dead rubber friendlies which affects points gartered.

WHY ARE THERE FOUR DIFFERENT LEAGUES?

The 55 member nations of UEFA are divided into four Leagues of 12 teams (with League C and D having 15 and 16 teams), based on their FIFA ranking.

So the highest ranking 12: from France to Iceland are drawn in League A (the big boys), while the lowest ranking 16, Andorro, Kosovo etc are drawn in League D (the small teams), with middle ranking teams like Wales and Czech republic in League B.

League A
Germany, France, Netherlands,Belgium, Switzerland, Iceland, Portugal, Italy, Poland,Spain, England, Croatia

League B

Slovakia, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Russia, Sweden, Turkey, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Northern Ireland, Wales, Republic of Ireland, Denmark

League C

Scotland, Albania, Israel, Hungary, Greece, Finland, Estonia, Slovenia, Norway, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Romania, Serbia, Montenegro, Lithuania

League D

Georgia, Latvia, Kazakhstan, Andorra, Belarus, Luxembourg, Moldova, San Marino, Azerbaijan, Faroe Islands, Malta, Kosovo, FYR Macedonia, Armenia, Liechtenstein, Gibraltar

WHY ARE THERE DIFFERENT GROUPS IN THE LEAGUES?

The 12, or 16 teams in each league are now drawn into 4 groups, so in League A, there is group 1,2,3,4, same with league B, league C and league D.

France, Germany and Netherlands are in group 1 of league A, while Estonia, Finland, Greece and Hungary are in group 2 of league C

All the teams in the various groups play each other on a home and away basis, so each country in each group would play four matches or six matches depending on how many they are in their group (some groups have four teams, while others have three).

Group A1: Germany, France, Netherlands
Group A2: Belgium, Switzerland, Iceland
Group A3: Portugal, Italy, Poland
Group A4: Spain, England, Croatia

Group B1: Slovakia, Ukraine, Czech Republic
Group B2: Russia, Sweden, Turkey
Group B3: Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Northern Ireland
Group B4: Wales, Republic of Ireland, Denmark

Group C1: Scotland, Albania, Israel
Group C2: Hungary, Greece, Finland, Estonia
Group C3: Slovenia, Norway, Bulgaria, Cyprus
Group C4: Romania, Serbia, Montenegro, Lithuania

Group D1: Georgia, Latvia, Kazakhstan, Andorra
Group D2: Belarus, Luxembourg, Moldova, San Marino
Group D3: Azerbaijan, Faroe Islands, Malta, Kosovo
Group D4: FYR Macedonia, Armenia, Liechtenstein, Gibraltar

Points are awarded the same way as usual, 3 for a win and 1 for a draw.

During FIFA's November international window, the group stage for the Nations League would have ended, and winners in each group would have been decided.

THE NATIONS LEAGUE CHAMPION

The winners from the four groups of League A (the best of the 'big boys') would qualify for the 'Final Four' playoffs. Semifinal, then a final, with the winner being the first ever Nations League Champion.

PROMOTION AND RELEGATION?

For the remaining countries, there is promotion and relegation.

The lowest team in each group gets relegated to the lower league, and replaced by the highest from the lower league. For example, if England finishes bottom of group 4 in league A, they are relegated to league B and replaced by Denmark who finished top of group 4 in league B.

WILL TEAMS QUALIFY FOR EURO 2020 FROM THE NATIONS LEAGUE?

Yes four teams would qualify for EURO 2020 through the Nations League

As for Euro qualification, there are 20 spots from the regular Euro qualifiers, and four spots from the UEFA Nations League.

The top two teams in the normal 10 Euro qualifiers groups (separate from the Nations League) will qualify automatically for 20 spots, while the remaining four spots would come from the Nations League.

HOW ARE THE FOUR SPOTS FROM THE NATIONS LEAGUE DECIDED?

The four group winners (Nations League) in each league qualifies for a playoff to decide the team that would qualify for the Euro.

So for example, if Israel, Estonia, Cyprus and Lithuania finish tops of group 1,2,3,4 respectively in League C, they would all qualify for a playoff, where they will face each other to decide one team that would represent League C at the Euros, same with Andorra, San Marino, Kosovo, Gibraltar in League D.

DOES THE NATIONS LEAGUE AFFECT THE FIFA CALENDAR?

No it doesn't, all the matches are played within FIFA international breaks.

This is a timeline of how everything would look

September - November 2018: Nations League group stage are played, with group winners emerging.

March - November 2019: Normal qualifiers for Euro 2020 takes place to decide 20 qualified teams.

June 2019: Final Four between group winners of league A (to decide Nations League champion) takes place.

March 2020: Nations League Playoffs for Euro 2020 among group winners of all leagues takes place to decide remaining four spots.

My name is Elvis the Pundit, and I'm here to change the game in football analysis.
