Politics / Orji Kalu Plays The Ethnic Game Card By James Ubadike by Emekanews(m): 5:17pm On Aug 15, 2013 |
By James Ubadike Like most Nigerian politicians who resort to playing the ethnic card when cornered in a tight situation, Orji Uzor Kalu, the controversial immediate past governor of Abia State, has now alleged that his new mansion in the high brow Park View Estate in Ikoyi, Lagos State, has been sealed off by the state Land Use Charge Office, a parastatal of the Ministry of Finance, for his recent public criticism of the government for the relocation of 14 destitute individuals to Anambra State. Kalu’s residence was sealed off yesterday by the agency for Kalu’s refusal to pay the land use charge after three notices have been sent to him in the last three months. But in an attempt to give the state government an ethnic colouration, Kalu instructed his publicity consultant, Emeka Obasi who served as his Commissioner for Information, to issue a statement on his behalf alleging that the Lagos state government is persecuting him for not only criticizing the government’s relocation of the beggars from Anambra State but also for threatening to sue the authorities after a seven-day notice. Though Governor Babatunde Fashola directed that Kalu’s eye-popping property be de-sealed on hearing of the action of the parastatal, his special adviser on the media, Hakeem Bello, has dismissed the allegation that the state government is punishing the former governor for the threat to sue the Fashola administration. “Mr Fashola is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, so he is not afraid of law suits”, he said to correspondents last night on the phone. “In fact, litigation is a civilized way of resolving disputes, rather than allowing people to take the law into their hands.” Bello said that no one who knows Kalu “very well would have taken the threat seriously. He was merely grandstanding just to receive an applause from those who did not know him. The only court he goes to is the one in his village of Igbere which he established when he was a governor. “At the end of his so-called ultimatum, he laughably said that he backed down because unnamed Yoruba people were on their knees begging him not to press the so-called charges”. Bello accused accused the ex governor of playing to the gallery by attempting to rush to the media and shouting victimisation so that he would be projected as a victim of government hard tactics. “But he knows that he is a land use charge defaulter, and the law does not smile at those who deliberately run foul of it. Let him tell Nigerians how much land charge he has paid after paying hundreds of millions of naira to acquire the building”. The Park View Estate property is one of the known capital assets acquired by the erstwhile governor since he became the Abia State chief executive in 1999. He moved into the place from his residence on Samuel Adedoyin Street in Victoria Island where he was living before becoming governor. Kalu’s house in Potomac Park, Maryland, United States, is one of the biggest in this estate which is among the most expensive areas of the United States inhabited by the likes of General Colin Powell, the first African American Secretary of State who also made history when he became the first black to serve as the National Security Adviser under Ronald Reagan and later became the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under George Bush Snr and Bill Clinton. Kalu put the Potomac Park property on sale last year after his divorcee female friend, Chinwe Masi, died mysteriously in it in August, 2010. “He had begun to find it pretty difficult to maintain the palatial because money is no longer flowing as it when he was a governor”, disclosed an online report in 2011. While serving as governor, Kalu established the SLOK Airline but the licence was withdrawn by the aviation authorities after a series of serious sharp practices were discovered. Kalu shifted the airline to the Gambia but it has since collapsed. Another major asset he acquired while working as governor is The Sun newspapers based in Lagos. His earlier periodical newspaper which he set up as a private businessman in Apapa before his sojourn into the lucrative Nigerian politics, Every Woman, failed due to poor management and a lack of financial resources. Though Kalu always asks his spin doctors like Emeka Obasi to cast him in the image of an Igbo fighter for political purposes, he has always opposed popular moves by the Igbo people. He led the Abia State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) delegates to vote against the former highly respected vice president, Dr Alex Ekwueme, in the PDP primaries in Jos in 1999 and in Abuja in 2003. In fact, he still boasts of how he donated N100m to General Olusegun Obasanjo in 1998 to ensure Ekwueme’s defeat, even though this was the brightest chance the Igbo had to produce Nigeria’s president since the end of the Nigerian civil war in 1970. Kalu is one of the erstwhile governors standing trial by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for monumental corruption. http://www.africa.openleech.org/index.php/component/k2/item/59229-orji-kalu-plays-the-ethnic-game-card-by-james-ubadike |
Politics / Epidemic Looms In Imo As Heaps Of Refuse Litter Streets by Emekanews(m): 5:16pm On Aug 11, 2013 |
Heaps of refuse at School Road Market, Ama Hausa, World Bank Market and Old Okigwe road all in Owerri Residents of Owerri, the Imo State capital, are in for imminent outbreak of epidemic following the littering of streets and markets in the capital city with heaps of refuse. According to checks by our reporter in Owerri, major streets and markets in the city are now replete with repulsive and overpowering stench of rotten heaps of over-stayed refuse. Our checks reveal that at Umezuruike Street by Royce Road, Ama Hausa, Egbeada Road, Item/Mbari streets in Ikenegbu, Orji and Egbu Roads, heaps of refuse have since taken over the roads and streets. The situation is worse in such markets as Relief, World Bank, New Market, Eke Onunwa and School Road Markets where some traders display their wares including edible items while those allergic to such odours, abandoned their stalls waiting till when the officials of Imo State Environmental Transformation Commission (ENTRACO) come to evacuate the dirt. It is even worst any day the citizens decide to embark on general sanitation by scooping out dirts. The roads would be impassable for days. As a result of this, residents and traders are no longer finding it comfortable doing business around the affected streets and markets. For instance, shop and stall owners on Umezuruike Street and Old Okigwe Road have packed up since one week. Speaking to 247ureports.com a resident at Egbu, Mr Iyke Ozurumba expressed deep concern that Owerri which was once reputed for being the cleanest city in Nigeria, has turned to stinking place. Mr Ozurumba wondered why the Rochas Okorocha-led government should allow such ugly sites that were capable of causing epidemic in the state to exist unattended to. ‘My brother, the entire situation is an eyesore. From my residence at Egbu to Ama Hausa and inside all the markets in the metropolis, the site you behold is a very dirty capital city. It’s very unfortunate. ‘I must tell you that since this government came into being, Owerri has not remained the same again in terms of cleanliness’, he lamented. Another resident, Chika Nwaiche who resides on Royce Road, could not understand why the state government should pay lip service to environmental sanitation, saying for about two years now, the state capital had consistently remained ‘putrid with heaps of dirt’. ‘You can imagine our predicaments here. When my friends visit me from Aba, which is known for dirt, they complain that Owerri is becoming like Aba in terms of dirt and bad odours’, Nwaiche lamented. They blamed the state government for leaving the evacuation of refuse in the hands of contractors without adequately monitoring their operations. Information reaching 247ureports.com has it that the immediate past administration of Chief Ikedi Ohakim was spending about N125million monthly to keep the capital city clean by organising monthly sanitation exercise. But the Okorocha-led administration stopped the exercise and reduced it to N70million and has not been able to achieve much in terms of keeping the city clean. According to our findings, most of the individuals who got the contract of refuse disposal in the state, lacked the capacity and experience to do the job, and as a result, had to sublet the jobs to foreign firm who was said to have deviced a means of evacuating the refuse at their convenience. Thus, instead of daily evacuation of the refuse, the contractors now allow the dumpsites to heavily overflow to the roads and the streets two weeks before coming to evacuate them. However, ENTRACO officials who pleaded anonymity accused Governor Okorocha of being the architect of the whole problem. According to them, because of the amount involved, the governor decided to sideline ENTRACO officials and awarded the job to his relatives who, as it were, had messed up the job. ‘It is very painful to recall that during Ohakim’s era, we were fully involved in supervising the daily evacuation of refuse in Owerri, Orlu and Okigwe and we never failed. But these days, job seekers bypass ENTRACO to secure the contracts only to hire tippers and waste disposal equipment at day pay in order to maximise profits’, said of the Entraco officials. They appealed to journalists to inform the governor to address the situation before a major outbreak of epidemic which is looming within the state capital. All efforts made to reach the general manager of ENTRACO, Mr. Henry Ike proved abortive as calls and sms put through to his gsm line were not responded to http://www.spyghana.com/epidemic-looms-in-imo-as-heaps-of-refuse-litter-streets-markets/ |

Culture / 200 Years Of Yoruba In Ghana: Culture, Honour, History Take Centre-stage In Accr by Emekanews(m): 4:44pm On Aug 11, 2013 |
The Yoruba Community in Ghana in a rare showcase of culture is set to mark the 200th year of the Yoruba in Ghana with a book that captures the sojourn. Plans have been concluded to celebrate 200 years of Yoruba in Ghana. This special display of culture and heritage of the Yoruba people of South West Nigeria is being put together by a committee constituted by the various Yoruba communities in the ten regions of Ghana. Slated for the National Theatre, Accra on September 24, 2013 the event is expected to attract not only the members of the Yoruba Community numbering 500,000 but also members of other Nigerian groups alongside top players in the Ghanaian economy. Explaining the series of events that have been lined up to make this event as grand as possible, the leader of the Organising Committee, Joshua Bola Olalere said in an interview that it would be weeklong: The 200 years of Yoruba in Ghana will start with a press conference where the leadership of the Yoruba Community will announce to the world our intention to celebrate and why we should celebrate. There shall be courtesy visits to the Nigerian Embassy and some Obas of the Yoruba across the regions in Ghana. We have ten regions in Ghana and the Yoruba Community has functioning executives in all these regions and Obas. On the third day, there will be charity visit to some childrens homes where items shall be donated to the less-privileged children in the society. On Thursday, there shall be novelty football match between the Yoruba youths from Accra and Kumasi. There shall be Jumat service on Friday and on Saturday shall be the main day for award , dinner and the grand reception for some Yoruba leaders who have made us proud as Yoruba people. Some of these awardees are Group Managing Director of Energy Group, Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim, the Governors of Oyo, Osun and Ogun states; Abiola Ajimobi, Rauf Aregbesola and Ibikunle Amosun as well as Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. Others are Adebayo Salami, Chief Mrs. Toyin Kolade, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, Alagba Adebayo Faleti and Gani Adams. The Yoruba Cultural Centre shall come alive for the public presentation of the book: Exploits of Migrant Community: 200 Years of Yoruba in Ghana. At the end of the day, the book would have proven so much to our host country that we have indeed contributing massively to the allround development of Ghana. It will also serve as reference material for the future generation because to live without any form of record is to live without any form of history; many efforts of our past heroes have gone uncelebrated because it was not properly documented. The book shall chronicle the earliest migration of Yoruba people from Nigeria since about 200 years ago. It shall highlight their influences, impacts and their challenges in their sojourn in a foreign land and as well celebrate their successes. The book will also help some of the Yoruba born and raised in Ghana to know more about Yoruba culture and home. This event, according to the Organising Committee would not only announce the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba but also bring respect and honour to the entire Nigerian nation country. At the end of this programme, Ghanaians will have more respect for Nigerians and more importantly, the Yoruba because we are part of the builders of the modern Ghana, Olalere said. Highpoint of the celebration would be the Yoruba Heritage Award which will be recognising some illustrious sons of Yoruba land as the members of the Yoruba Community roll out the drums to celebrate them in an atmosphere of conviviality. One of the honourees is celebrated entrepreneur, Dr. Ibrahim, whose vast interests in sectors such as banking, insurance, education, media and hospitality, has rubbed off positively and immensely on the image of the Nigerian nation in Ghana. According to the leader of the Organising Committee, Dr. Ibrahim was unanimously decided to be honoured by the Yoruba Community for his untiring role in putting the African continent on the map of the top World Corporate entities, judging from the performance of his Energy Group in just ten years. Olalere said: The case of Dr. Ibrahim is spectacular. The Energy Bank Ghana has added to the pride of Nigerians in Ghana as one of the successful Nigerian businesses in the country. The entire Yoruba are very happy and proud that one of us has come to Ghana to own a bank 100% and so far so good, the bank has provided employment for several Ghanaians, buttressing our point that we did not come to Ghana to take. We are also providing and contributing to the economy of Ghana. When Air Nigeria was flying, it was the most preferred on Lagos-Accra route and we cannot wait for it to be back in the sky. http://mobile.nationalmirroronline.net/read.php?index=3914 |

Politics / Bad Roads: MASSOB Curses Abia Government Officials by Emekanews(m): 11:15pm On Aug 10, 2013 |
The Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has invoked the wrath of God on Abia State Government officials who lie and deceive the public about the state of roads in Aba, the commercial town. Reacting to a live TV programme, where former Abia State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Eze Chikamnanyo, stated that most roads in Aba, including Ngwa, had been rehabilitated by the state government, MASSOB said the statement was ridiculous and untrue. Speaking through its Director of Information, Aba region, Mr. Sunny Okereafor, MASSOB said that based on the former commissioner’s claim, his organization had assessed the roads and found out that it was false and deceitful, adding that the residents are living in squalor. MASSOB described as baffling, the rate at which government officials allegedly dish out lies, especially on the state of roads in the city, which it said were in terrible condition. He stated, “which of the roads in Aba do we take for good in the real sense? Are they Ohanku, Ngwa, Ikot Ekpene, Port Harcourt or Faulks, which leads to Ariaria International Market, all of which were claimed to have been rehabilitated? Who is fooling who? “We know that some of these officials and agents either want to remain in their posts or be re-appointed. Inasmuch as there was nothing wrong in that, it should not be achieved through barefaced lies and at the expense of the suffering masses. “People should come to Aba and see the roads somebody went on television to tell the world they had been rehabilitated. This is mere deceit. Take Ngwa Road, for instance. That road is not only impassable, but people there are living in squalor. “If these government officials and agents think they can go ahead telling lies and deceiving people, the wrath of God, which we have invoked, is awaiting them and there is no escape route,” MASSOB said. http://www.codewit.com/nigeria-news/10607-bad-roads-massob-curses-abia-government-officials |

Politics / Despite Frequent Raiding, Enugu Baby Factories Boom by Emekanews(m): 1:48pm On Aug 05, 2013 |
Enugu — It seems there is no end, at least in the nearest future, to the booming baby business in Enugu State. The illegal business is believed to have existed for many decades undiscovered. In spite of frequent raiding, arrest and detention, and sometimes prosecution of suspects by security agencies, those behind it appear unrepentant. Last Wednesday, men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps ( NSCDC) in Enugu State, clamped down on a clinic said to be a "business empire" for the sale of newborn babies to anxious buyers. This clinic, our reporter was reliably informed, has been in this illicit business for the past 10 years. It was gathered that the proprietor of the clinic, Dr. Ben Agbo, had had several encounters with the police, but would, however, wriggle out of the hook. But speaking to Sunday Trust, he said, "I had one case at the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID); and that was the only case I have had with the law. I have been doing my business without disturbance." Located at 61, Agbani Road, by Abagana Street in the Coal Camp area of Enugu metropolis, "Moonlight Maternity Home," is in a rather ancient, and not very well maintained bungalow, apparently to conceal the business from the prying eyes of passersby and neighbours. The 74-year-old founder of the "maternity home," who was arrested alongside a nurse, Mrs. Agnes Nweke, however, said that, as part of the humanitarian service of the clinic, he had been selling babies to people in need of them for the past 10 years. Officers of the NSCDC equally rescued a 3-day-old baby about to be handed over to a prospective buyer. They also arrested a certain Mr. Joseph Eze, 37, a commercial bus driver who resides in the same premises. They, however, said he would serve as a witness during the prosecution of Dr. Agbo. Eze told reporters that he had seen some pregnant teenage girls in the clinic, but wondered why they patronised the doctor in that manner. "I am not part of them; I live in a house behind the maternity. I am a bus driver. The doctor has testified before all that I am not part of his maternity. Sometime last year, I asked a former nurse with them how they managed to get those babies they sell and the mothers that delivered them. Her reply was that their mothers were young teenagers and singles who are victims of unwanted pregnancy. Instead of abortion, they choose to deliver for adoption. Recently, I have seen about three of those young girls in the maternity," Eze said. "I am not really impressed with this type of case I am having now; but I take it as temptation. My business is not all that illegal; but if it is said to be illegal, that's okay," Dr Agbo told reporters. Asked about the whereabouts of the mother of the 3-day-old baby found in his clinic, he said she went to seek for assistance. He continued, "The baby was delivered in my hospital last Saturday. I am not usually in the hospital on weekends, but the nurse who assisted in the delivery told me that the baby's mother said she would come back to claim the baby. Since then I haven't seen her. The mother's name is Mrs. Mercy. I don't know her surname. The fact is that she is not our patient, she just came in. She is an outpatient. "I have not paid the mother yet. If she comes back and requires payment, I will pay her. And she will pay the hospital bill when she comes back to claim the baby." He added that his charges were between N100, 000 and N120, 000 per child. He explained that his action was informed by the fact that he was against abortion and dumping of unwanted babies; adding that such practice by young girls was a "big sin," and he would not part of it. But his nurse, Mrs. Agnes Nweke contradicted her boss's claim of being against abortion. She said, "Initially, we started with inpatient, outpatient, and after that he started to do abortion." "When he had a case with the police and "Social Mother;" and the welfare organisation wanted to take us to court, we "settled" the police and we were bailed. The hospital was shut down by the Ministry of Health sometime last year and we had to do the normal registration. Then I was on leave to treat my injured leg. It was just last week that I resumed work. The doctor had advised me not to overwork myself lest my blood pressure rise. That had been the nature of work here. I don't normally come to work on Saturdays and Sundays, so I know nothing about the baby and her mother." Married to a police officer, who she said worked with the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command; Mrs. Nweke said she was not sure if her husband knew the type of business they did in her place of work. She was also not sure if the business is legal or illegal, saying, "I can't tell whether it is legal or not. I am an employee." State commander of the NSCDC, Nathaniel Ubong, who paraded the suspects before reporters, said they were arrested following a tip-off and after a tedious surveillance by his men around the said maternity home. Ubong added that his men recovered some vital documents relating to previous transactions in the clinic. According to him, some of the documents recovered include files that contained records of previous transactions, as well as pending applications from prospective buyers of new born babies. Some of the handwritten applications and other records of transaction made available to reporters showed that some babies were sold at N500, 000. There were also some records where Dr. Agbo's clients deposited up to N200, 000 for a baby boy, promising to pay the balance when the child was handed over to them. Ubong said the proprietor would be prosecuted after investigation. Furthermore, on Tuesday, May 14, 2013, operatives of the anti-kidnapping unit of the Enugu State Police Command arrested six pregnant young girls who were haboured in a house at the Ogui area of Enugu metropolis. The girls were kept in a hideout by members of a syndicate who specialise in this business. They have, however, been at large since the bubble burst. Also, the police recently rescued a 12-day-old baby, reportedly stolen from his mother and subsequently sold to a childless couple. Right now, four suspects, including the sellers and the couple who were said to have bought the baby, are being interrogated by detectives. Confirming the arrest of the six pregnant girls, the public relations officer, Enugu State police command, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, said in a statement that the girls were arrested at No. 7, Anyansi Lane, Ogui, in Enugu North Local Government Area of the state. Amaraizu said the girls, whose ages ranged between 16 and 17, had negotiated with people that would buy their babies after delivery. But it could not be ascertained at press time, how the girls were put in the family way. Amaraizu also confirmed the arrest of three other persons in connection with the crime, saying that investigations into the matter are ongoing. According to him, the three persons arrested include Lami Lasu, Isha Musa and Anthony Chigbo. Similarly, one Mercel Agu and his wife, Callista, have been picked up by the police for allegedly stealing a 12-day-old male baby from its mother, Chika Nwokolo, after delivery at an unnamed maternity home on Ebony Paint Road, Awkunanaw, Enugu South Local Government Area of the state. The spokesman of the police said the arrest of the couple led to the subsequent arrest of two others: Mrs. Stella Nebo and one Patrick Ugwu, said to be linked with the crime. http://allafrica.com/stories/201308051423.html?page=3 |
