European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / De Gea Warned Over Stolen Doughnut In A Restaurant by emersy: 2:23pm On Sep 30, 2011
Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has found himself in a sticky situation after being warned for allegedly eating a Krispy Kreme doughnut at a local shop without paying for it.
De Gea, who joined United this summer from Atletico Madrid, earns around £70,000-a-week but apparently decided that he wasn't willing to shell out £1.19 for the sugary treat and, according to the Sun, ate it in store, before attempting to leave.

The Spaniard was tackled by security staff, who showed him CCTV footage of the incident in the store's "stop and search" room.

A source told the paper: "They [De Gea and his two friends] weren't very subtle. They swaggered in chatting loudly in Spanish. The security guards who monitor the CCTV watched two of them take a doughnut each out of the Krispy Kreme cabinet. Incredibly, they then appeared to try to leave without paying - or buying anything else for that matter."

De Gea avoided a jam as he was given warning and police were not called to the scene. On Thursday night a Tesco spokesman said: "A customer was spoken to by our security team and the issue was resolved."

Celebrities / Spartacus Tv Actor Andy Whitfield Dies At 39 by emersy: 11:45am On Sep 12, 2011
Andy Whitfield, the British star of US TV drama Spartacus: Blood and Sand, has died at the age of 39.

Whitfield died on Sunday in Sydney, Australia, 18 months after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, his family and manager said.

His wife, Vashti, described him as "our beautiful young warrior".

Whitfield was born in North Wales and moved to Australia in 1999. Actor Liam McIntyre took over Whitfield's role in the TV series when he became ill.

"On a beautiful sunny Sydney spring morning, surrounded by his family, in the arms of his loving wife, our beautiful young warrior Andy Whitfield lost his 18-month battle with lymphoma cancer," his wife said in a statement.
'Courage and strength'

"He passed peacefully surrounded by love. Thank you to all his fans whose love and support have helped carry him to this point. He will be remembered as the inspiring, courageous and gentle man, father and husband he was."

Chris Albrecht, president and chief operating officer of US TV network Starz, said he was "deeply saddened" by Whitfield's loss.

"We were fortunate to have worked with Andy in Spartacus and came to know that the man who played a champion on-screen was also a champion in his own life," Albrecht said in a statement.

"Andy was an inspiration to all of us as he faced this very personal battle with courage, strength and grace," he added.

Whitfield played the title role in all 13 episodes of the first series, screened in 2010, and was about to shoot the second series when he was diagnosed with cancer.

Spartacus, which attracted media attention in the US for its graphic scenes of sex and violence, was first seen in the UK on the now defunct Bravo channel before moving to Sky One.

In an interview with the Deadline Hollywood website last year, Whitfield said having cancer had taught him some important lessons.

"After the initial shock - I was a healthy young man and had no idea this could happen - it was frustrating that the first season was ending on such a high note."

But he added he then found "time to heal, figure things out and spend time with my family. Stay in the now and enjoy every moment."

Whitfield's Spartacus co-star Lucy Lawless also paid tribute to the actor in a statement to EW:

"Andy Whitfield left an indelible mark on all of us in the Spartacus family," she said. "He was a gentle man who never said a bad word about anyone, a gifted photographer, engineer (no really!) and a brilliant actor.

"How lucky we were to have him grace all our lives. Godspeed, Andy!"

Education / Students’protest: Ibadan Poly Closed Indefinitely by emersy: 11:39am On Jun 01, 2011
The management of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, on Tuesday, closed the institution indefinitely following protests by the students.

The students had staged a protest to the seat of government, complaining about the high tuition fees which they wanted the new government of Senator Abiola Ajimobi to reduce.

Consequently, the school management, in a statement, issued and signed by its Registrar, Mr Tosho Ayanwale, disclosed that the institution had been closed down until further notice.

He said the closure was as a result of the lawless attitude of the students, who invaded the office of the state governor.

According to the statement, the school management has, consequently, directed all the students of the institution including those in Saki and Eruwa campuses to proceed to their various homes until further notice.

The management, therefore, advised parents and guardians "to make their wards to comply with the directive which takes immediate effect.”

During the protest, policemen had a hectic time trying to prevent a breakdown of law and order as the students chanted various songs, imploring the new government to slash down the high fees introduced by the outgone administration of Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala.

The state Commissioner of Police, Baba Adisa Bolanta, who confirmed the protest said they had been dispersed before they could cause any havoc.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State has condemned in very strong terms, the attack on students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan by security personnel attached to the state governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi.

The position of the party was contained in a statement signed by the state secretary of the party, Alhaji Bashir Akanbi, and made available to newsmen in Ibadan.

According to the statement, “ the Peoples Democratic Party and its leadership in the state condemn in very strong terms the social unrest and attack on innocent students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, who embarked on a peaceful march to the Governor’s Office to demand for the actualisation of the promise of the Action Congress of Nigeria-led administration.

Our father watching football in heaven,Utd be thy name. Thy double is coming. Thy will be done in Wembley as it is in Old Traford. Give us on Saturday our heroic Reds and forgive us for beating Chelsea as we don't forgive those who take points from us and lead us not into the mind of Guardiola but deliver us from his evil. For Old Traford is the kingdom, the power and the GLORY. For Ever and Ever. Amen
