Politics / Re: Kashim Shettima: Tinubu Subsidised Cost Of 2024 Hajj With N90 Billion by emkz: 5:16pm On May 15
Condemnable.

As I reprimanded the Jigawa state government for wasting public money on Ramadan feeding and northern governors for subsidizing hajj and mass weddings, the same comment applies to the FG.

Hajj is personal and anyone who cannot pay for it by himself does not have to go.
emkz:
One of the greatest anomalies in northern Nigeria is the misappropriation of resources on matters that have no developmental value to those states, for example:

(1) Ramadan feeding
(2) Hajj subsidy and outright payment
(3) Mass weddings.

Internally generated revenue in some of the states doing these things are extremely poor. They include: Sokoto, Kebbi, Jigawa, and Kano. The quality of life of the population is also disturbing, yet they invest in things that cannot improve the lives of their citizens. For example, do all these states have good drinking water? Are their citizens gainfully employed? Are their children in school? Is infrastructure in top shape?

Okay, the funds allocated for Ramadan feeding: are the included in the budget? If not, how will the funds be accounted for? After Ramadan, will the people not eat again? Is it the responsibility of state governments to feed citizens during Ramadan? Do the governments of Qatar and Saudi Arabia feed their citizens with public funds during Ramadan?

Then to the issue of Hajj sponsorship: when the sponsored return from Hajj, would they return to an eldorado state of affairs or they return to an endemic poor state of affairs?

Northern governors must separate personal spiritual pursuits from public funds. Public funds belong to the public and should be geared towards public good and not fund people's private spiritual pursuits.

As for the Jigawa State Commissioner for Commerce suspended for alleged mismanagement of iftar feeding programme funds, I think the state government and entire cabinet ought to suspend themselves too for misappropriation of public funds to a feeding programme unknown to the state's appropriation bill.

Yemi Cardoso, if you are reading this, there is one thing you are missing.

Most of the attempts to curb the naira slide are missing a key component.

WHY EXACTLY DOES THR CBN SELL DOLLARS TO THE PUBLIC THROUGH BDCS? All the dollars you put into the system, what have they been used for? Who bought them?

The last I checked, only those travelling out of the country need fx for PTA/BTA, importers, businesses who need to repatriate profits, and those who need to pay school fees abroad. Now, you have been selling fx to BDCs to sell to the public. This doesn't make sense.

It seems politicians are the same set of persons mopping up fx.

You must track all fx sales. The only people who need physical fx are those needing PTA/BTA, and even that can be done electronically.

Cardi B, whilst carrying out measures like delisting naira from Binance or Kucoin, STOP THE PRACTICE OF SELLING FX TO THE PUBLIC.

THEY DON'T NEED IT.

Politics / Re: Oluwatoyin Madein: Tax Now Highest Revenue Source To Federation by emkz: 10:05am On May 15
This is great. In countries like the UK, US ans Canada, taxes contribute to government revenue and are channeled to public use.

Another thing that must be done is bringing back tollgates. In most advanced countries I have visited, major roads are tolled. Apart from revenue, such funds are used to maintain such assets for public good. For example, if you are entering any state, you pay your toll. For states with large local government areas, you can toll each local government area's entrance.

One question that arose during the presidential campaigns was revenue generation and addressing the debt burden.

Previous administrations never defaulted in honouring debt obligations. The revenue drive by the Tinubu administration is also sensible.

May I also suggest the Ministry of Finance looks into some government assets that are not income generating or expensive to maintain and sell them off or lease them? For example, Federal Secretariat in Lagos can be bought by the Lagos State Government or private partners and convert it to profitable use like block of apartments? Also, we do not know why NNPC and FG still hold on to refineries. Might be useful to sell them off.

How about Ajaokuta Steel Mill? Can't someone like Adenuga or Dangote buy it off and make it productive? Our wealthy men are looking for where to put their money. The FG needs to open the space for them.

Our banks are profitable. There are critical sectors of the economy they can pour funds into.

When the economy is moving, foreign investors would want to come since their motivation is not charity but profit.

Politics / Re: Structure Of Criminality: Sowore Slams Peter Obi For Meeting Former VP Atiku by emkz: 9:43pm On May 14
Peter Obi did gragra thinking he could go all the way alone.

He has learnt his lessons.

Atiku saw himself as the president and underestimated other persons like Obi, Kwankwaso, Wike and Tinubu. Atiku doesn't seem to have learnt a thing.

Historically, no one becomes Nigeria's president on his own. In 1999, Obasanjo was installed by the military. In 2007, Obasanjo helped Yar'adua. In 2011, Jonathan was helped by most Nigerians who did not appreciate the way he was treated. In 2015, Buhari was helped by Tinubu, Amaechi, et al. In 2023, Kwankwaso, Atiku and Obi helped Tinubu win by splitting their votes.

Now, some people are shouting themselves hoarse that Tinubu bribed INEC and never won the election.

If Obi or Atiku believe this, they would ensure no one bribes INEC and still try to win from different parties. That they want to align is an indication that they realized their disunity cost them the election.

It must be recalled that Atiku in his last ill-fated press conference had called on Obi and Kwankwaso to join him in opposition. Obi seems to be heeding the call.

Dear Obidients, has Peter Obi even explained to you people why he made that visit? Would you still support him if he deputizes Atiku?

Politics / Highlights of FEC Meeting Held 13th - 14th May 2024 by emkz: 8:03pm On May 14
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE FEDERAL EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MEETINGS HELD ON 13TH AND 14TH MAY, 2024
The Federal Executive Council concluded its meeting that started yesterday today, Tuesday May 14, 2024.

After exhaustive deliberations, the council approved a number of policies and projects that will further boost the economy, facilitate investments and promote the ease of doing business in the country. The under-listed are the major highlights:

1. Council supported a series of initiatives set to be launched that will revolutionize Nigeria's Infrastructure and Housing sector through Public-Private Partnerships

The initiatives which can unlock about N2 trillion are aimed at transforming the nation's infrastructure and housing mortgage sector, meet the urgent demand for critical infrastructure and affordable homeownership, fostering job creation, inclusive growth, and long-term productivity enhancement.

Inspired by the 1970s era, the government envisions a future where ordinary Nigerians can access 25-year mortgages at low-interest rates to realise their dream of owning a home. By collaborating with private institutional investors, the government seeks to replicate past successes and address current challenges effectively.

This strategic partnership aims to leverage the expertise and capital of private investors to accelerate the delivery of vital projects, driving sustainable development and economic progress for all Nigerians.

2. FEC approved that all users of Federal airports all over the country must now pay tolls at the gates. No one is excluded. The President and Vice President of Nigeria will also pay the toll.

3. The council announced a ban on sand dredging 10 kms from all Federal bridges throughout the country.

4. Council annouced a 4-week deadline for review of visa policy to enable tourists, business people, and creative professionals visit Nigeria. The ease of doing business, the council agreed cannot materialise if prospective visitors face a herculean problem getting our country’s visa. Part of the review envisaged is that visa applicants can apply for the visa online and get one within 48 hours. Also visas may be waived for holders of visas of some countries.

5. The council granted approval for the supply, installation and training of operators of disabled aircraft recovery system at Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos. The contract will cost N4.2 billion. Similar contract was awarded in 2021 for Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in 2021.

6. Council approved Special Purpose Vehicle to be created on a PPP basis to develop 90,000 kilometres of fibre optic cable to increase Nigeria’s internet connectivity by 60-70 percent. The SPV intends to copy the NLNG model.

7. Council approved a consultancy service for the reconciliation and expansion of the remittances to NITDA.

8. Council approved the request of the Ministry of Communications to convert the property at 324 Jackson Street, San Francisco, USA into a Nigerian Digital Technology Exchange Programme Hub. Property owned by the Nigerian government is valued at close to $7million.

9. The Federal Executive Council also approved the award of contract for the building of bus terminals and other transport facilities in the Federal Capital, Abuja. Terminals will be built within 15 months at Kugbo, Abuja Central Business District and Mabushi. The whole project will cost N51 billion and will be executed by Planet Projects Nigeria Limited, which did similar contracts in Lagos and Oyo states.

10. Council approved the award of contract to Messrs El & Matt Nigeria Limited to upgrade Kwaita-Yebu Road in Kuala Area Council of Abuja at a cost of N7.6 billion. Completion time is 18 months.

11. Council approved contract for the building of the Court of Appeal Abuja Division at a cost of N37.2 billion. Project will be executed by Messrs Visible Construction Limited.

12. The Council awarded contract at a cost of N412million for street lights on Bill Clinton Drive, Airport Expressway. The job includes the procurement of 8 back-up generators, which will be powered by Compressed Natural Gas( CNG) or Solar, in line with government’s decision about migrating from fossil fuel to renewable energy. The council discussed extensively the need for this energy transition, as it is climate friendly, because of low emissions and also because it will reduce cost of transportation and inflation.

13. Council approved the request by Nigeria Customs Service to buy 200 Toyota Land Cruiser Buffalo V6 at a cost of N12.5 billion. All the vehicles will be CNG powered. Government also approved insurance cover for the vehicles at a cost of N522 million. The cover will be provided by NEM.

14. Messrs Yuan Resources Limited was awarded the concession to deploy a revenue assurance platform under PPP arrangement in the lottery and gaming sector. The concession which will be for 15 years, will be done via DFBOT option, which means Design, Finance, Build, Operate and Transfer.

15. Before the Monday meeting was adjourned till Tuesday, council approved several road projects. Among them was the reconstruction of Iseyin-Okeho-Iganna Road in Oyo State.

16. Council approved Section 2 of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Superhighway for construction, at a cost of N1.6 trillion.

17. Approval was granted for the award of contract for reconstruction of Koton-Karfe -Abaji Road (Abuja bound), along Abuja-Lokoja Route in Kogi state at a cost of N89 billion.

18. On Day 2 of the FEC meeting, approval was given for the award of contract for the equalisation of Lokoja-Benin Road, Okpela Section, Lokoja-Benin, Dualised Auchi Section -Uromi Link Road and Lokoja-Benin Road, Ekpoma Section. It was on this road that a fuel tanker fell into high water recently, with villagers having to swim to rescue the occupants of the tanker. The reconstruction will be financed by BUA Cement at a cost of N120 Billion under the tax credit scheme.

19. Council approved contracts to various contractors to build roads and bridges in Kaima-Tesse, Kwara State, Benin-Agbor, BeninByepass and Ngaski-Wara in Kebbi State. All the four contracts will cost N546 billion.

20. Messrs CCECC was awarded contract at N230 billion to build Kano Bypass. The road which is 37kms long will include bridges and several flyovers. The company has 36 months to complete the work.

21. The Council approved for procurement the Sokoto-Illela-Badagry superhighway, which is meant to join the Lagos-Calabar Coastal superhighway. The road was first awarded in 1976 and then abandoned.

I see what Tinubu's administration is trying to do.

Through SPVs from PPPs like we have with NLNG, which has consistently returned profits to the Nigerian state, Tinubu wants to simultaneously launch several ambitious projects nationwide.

We have seen this with the 2 proposed coastal road projects and now the building of fibre optic cable.

I also hear NIPOST may be restructured to become a profit-making agency.

1. NIPOST Properties & Development Company Limited.

2. NIPOST Transport & Services Limited; -NIPOST E- Commerce Services Limited.

3. NIPOST Financial & Digital Services Limited.

4. NIPOST Microfinance Bank Limited; -NIPOST E-Government Service.

This is according to one @OpeBee on Twitter.

May the Tinubu administration and Nigeria succeed.

Politics / Nigeria To Build Additional 90,000km Fibre Optic Cable by emkz: 3:53pm On May 14
The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, took to his twitter handle to announce that the Federal Executive Council had given approval for a special purpose vehicle to add 90,000km to Nigeria's fibre optic cable infrastructure. This is towards boosting Nigeria's internet connectivity.

After today's Federal Executive Council meetings, we have secured 2 approvals that offer significant opportunities for Nigerians in general, but also specifically for our digital startup ecosystem.

The first is the launch of a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) that will support the delivery of an additional 90,000km of fibre optic cable to complement our existing connectivity infrastructure and deliver a stronger national backbone for universal access to the internet across Nigeria.

Over the last few months, we have put in extensive groundwork to set up this SPV which will be modelled in governance and operations similarly to some of the best Public-Private Partnership setups in Nigeria, such as NIBSS and NLNG.

Working with partners and stakeholders from the government and private sector, this SPV will build the additional fibre optic coverage required to take Nigeria’s connectivity backbone to a minimum of 125,000km, from the current coverage of about 35,000km. Upon delivery, this will become Africa’s 3rd longest terrestial fibre optic backbone, after Egypt and South Africa.

This extensive coverage will enable us optimise the unique benefit of having 8 submarine cables already landed in Nigeria and therefore drive an uptake of the data capacity that the cables offer, beyond the current usage level of 10%.

Building on our existing work with the Broadband Alliance, this increased connectivity will help plug the current non-consumption gap by connecting over 200,000 educational, healthcare and social institutions across Nigeria, ensuring that a larger section of our society can be included in the benefits of internet connectivity.

Some of these immediate benefits include:

1.Increasing internet penetration in Nigeria to over 70%
2.Potential reduction of the cost of access to internet by over 60%
3.Inclusion of at least 50% of the 33 million Nigerians currently excluded from access to the internet
4.Delivering up to 1.5% of GDP growth per capita raising GDP from $472.6 billion (2022) to $502 billion over the next 4 year

Politics / Re: Nairaland Poll On Tinubu's Ministers. by emkz: 4:02pm On May 11
Kukutente23:

I'm glad you mentioned Sunak's approval and not his ministers. The public have no business with assessing a minister they did not employ. That's diversionary and cheap populism.

If Ms Hadiza is now asking the public to do her job for her, then I suggest we should start by assessing her cause I remember Tinubu said clearly that her job is to assess ministers based on set target and milestones. If she has failed in her assignment, it is disingenuous to push it to the public. She should just resign!

Let me give you an example. The public perception against the minister for power is strongly negative based on mispeaks. While it is true that his ministry has performed poorly since he took office, his sector has been impacted more by the unavailability of gas which has affected power generation capacity. Meanwhile we have a state minister for gas who has been sleeping with both eyes close while the minister for power has been taking the flack. Also, cooking gas prices has soared by over 50% when same minister took office but no one is calling him out. So in the eyes of the public, the minister for power is a failure while the state minister for gas gets a pass.

The APC as a party has not been able to organise itself into a veritable, policy and administration vehicle of governance since it took power 9 years ago. It is not just about this administration. APC is far worse than its predecessor in terms of governance. They excel in political brinkmanship and gamesmanship than actual governance. Tell me one policy or concept that APC has birthed in its 9 years successfully. The social welfare that became its signature has been riddled with corruption and inefficiency. So it's not just about a bunch of men. It's about the driving principle of the party. The leaders in the party need to sit down and decide what is really important for them. Is it the retention of political power or governance for public good?

If you read to comprehend, you'd see where I mentioned that Rishi Sunak was also assessed as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Look at the link below to see that Conservative MPs working as government officials are also assessed.

https://yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/explore/public_figure/Kemi_Badenoch

You mentioned that Hadiza Bala Usman wants us to do her job for her. I think your comment on her is hateful and false. Data from the public is one of many metrics to use to assess the ministers. And there is nothing wrong if such data are gathered from various sources, including Twitter polls, nairaland, Facebook or dedicated websites.

Then you claim that one of the issues bedeviling the power sector is unavailability of gas. Are you even aware that the biggest problem is transmission? Are you aware that we can't wheel the whole gamut of what we generate? As for the gas issues you mentioned, I do not have any comments as I am not sufficiently informed on it.

Then your last paragraph is needless. Elections are over. It is myopic to continue to lament over what you cannot change. The current problems can be traced from the PDP days, and the people in PDP or APC or LP are the same Nigerians.

So if you have suggestions to help those there today, make them and see it gain traction.

We can all gather to condemn. Preferring solutions is when people's intellectual limitations become exposed.

Putindbutt:
Nairaland is full of illiterates and half baked graduates, the fact that most of these ministers are not in the media making noise does not mean they are not working.

For some ministers, we can directly feel their impact, while for others, their ministries are very specific. For example, Minister of Special Duties has to deal with national awards and lottery regulations. So for those not directly involved in that, they won't be able to access him directly.

But there are ministries that ought to be engines of this administration. Agriculture, Environment, Water Resources, Creative Economy, Blue Economy, Digital Economy, Finance, Humanitarian Affairs, Education, Energy, Justice and Defence. I do not see any reason why NNPC is holding on to refineries when it is clear NNPC cannot maintain them.

Sadly, some of these ministers have not found their footing or come up with reasonable plans.

Like I had recommended to ALL of them late last year, they should gather subject matter experts, do two weeks of brainstorming, study the party manifesto and come up with their strategic plans.

I can give them two months to plan. Once planning is done and water-tight, implementation is easy.

My reading is that some of the ministers are overwhelmed. They need help.

1. The most incompetent minister who needs to leave the administration like yesterday is the minister for petroleum. He managed to botch the fuel subsidy removal agenda and now we're even queueing for fuel. The PH refinery is still not working while fuel theft is yet to be curbed. But for reasons only known to the Op, he finds it convenient to excuse that failure of a minister in his unsolicited jamboree. Perhaps he is one of the minister's die- hard minions which will make this thread nothing more than barefaced hypocrisy.

2. The exercise this thread is expected to achieve is a charade. Ministers are employees of the president and they serve at his pleasure. It is he who sets the agenda and assignment for them and is thus most qualified to assess them with his own parameters. It is a frivolous exercise to assess ministers based on likes and shares when those doing the assessment have close to no knowledge on the expectation from the principal for each official. The best you'll get is media visibility and perception which most times is a ruse. The official directly employed by the good people of nairaland is none other than the president himself. It is he we are most qualified to judge with our likes and shares cause we have direct expectations from him based on the job we gave him. A thread on his performance is more meaningful than a thread on the performance of his subjects. For example, from this thread, only 2 of his ministers will survive the axe while no questions will be asked of the man who put them there to fail abysmally. But I suspect the Op won't dare touch the big elephant cause he's one of the glorified hallelujah boys who go about in borrowed togas of public commentators with jaundiced and half-baked opinion.

The thread is meaningless and a waste!!

In societies that understand the usefulness of data, people set up opinion polls to measure public mood. For example, in the UK, a cross-section of the population is assessed to give opinions about the government of the day and their policies. Through this, some members of the Conservative Party are already indicating they won't stand for the next elections as public perception is skewed against the Sunak government. Through these polls, Sunak's approval ratings have dropped to the lowest as they were when he resigned as Chancellor of the Exchequer.

The Adviser to the President on Policy coordination had set up a scheme for the public to send feedback on the ministers.

Because we need data, we can use the best means available on Nairaland to measure the perception of the ministers. There are 3.1 million nairaland members. That is a source for useful data.

You can suspend your hate for once and allow others make meaningful contributions. You can also set up your own assessment scheme you feel is best and share the link here so that we can vote.

It is quite disturbing that you always read suspicions to everything that is done here. Everything is not fight and to have a loud voice as the most vocal hater of those in power. It is also curious that you are quick to refer to others as minions or paid hands or pursuing some agenda. Perhaps, these are pointers that you probably have some personal unresolved issues. If you are asked to prove any of your accusations, you can't, but you keep at it.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Minister of Petroleum Resources.

Do you think the Ministry needs a substantive minister or the president can remain as minister?

Kashim Shettima, Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He is an elected official and a member of the cabinet. Our rating is more of an approval or disapproval rating.
