Politics / Nairaland Poll On Tinubu's Ministers. by emkz: 1:10pm On May 11
Dear Nairalanders,

Imran Muhammad on Twitter started an opinion poll on to ask Tweeps which Ministers in Tinubu's cabinet can stay or leave.

Why don't we vote here too?

For those we like to be leave the cabinet/disprove of, we can vote with a "like", and for those we like to remain/approve of, we can vote with a "share".

We can also put comments on the ministers we think can improve or reassigned.

Our opinions should help the Special Adviser to the President on Project Coordination access the public mood on the ministers.

Please no insults.

It should be a fun game.

Politics / Re: Has Anyone Seen President Tinubu In Public Space Since He Came Back by emkz: 12:19pm On May 11
He was shown in a video walking to his office.

He was shown in a meeting with Bosun Tijani and one other guy.

He received letters of credence from three ambassadors.

Many of you chose not to believe. But you believed Buhari was dead and was replaced with a clone called Jubril from Sudan.

You also believe that someone who came 3rd in an election came 1st.

My worry is that out of hate, many ate waiting for the worst to happen. That is wicked. You lots are just hateful.

Those who lost lost. The best to do is to wish he works for our collective success as a people.

If Tinubu wins for Nigeria, Nigeria wins. Sadly, many of you go online to call him all sorts of names, curse him, curse those who follow him and support him and even curse the land.

How can you curse a land and expect to prosper in it?

Romance / Re: Man Holds Traditional Marriage Just To Sleep With 'Hard To Get' Lady, Dumps Her by emkz: 11:01am On May 10
This is silly.

I wonder if sex is so special that people go to disgraceful extents for it.

Now that he has succeeded in sleeping with her and trying to mess her up, what has he gained for himself? Whatever he gains, the pleasure of "victory" is temporary.

What I have learned in life is that satisfaction hardly comes from the things we crave for. After the things, what next?

As for the woman and other woman and even men, pay attention to the unspoken words. There is no one so sweet that he'd be able to conceal evil behaviour or plans for long.

Obidients will claim it is an old video. They'd say Nuhu Ribadu is in his village in Adamawa after his brother's death and has not resumed.

Obidients know what the rest of us don't, but they don't know how Aisha Yesufu spent all the money they donated. They also could not compile results and tell us how they won the election they claimed they won.

Politics / Peter Obi Reacts To Poor UTME Scores by emkz: 4:41pm On May 09
The Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election took to Twitter to lament the poor performance of candidates in UTME.

The recent revelation regarding the JAMB UTME 2024 results and percentages has sparked deep concern about the state of education in our country. These statistics paint a troubling picture that demands urgent national attention and discussion.

The distribution of scores is alarming, with only 0.5% of candidates reportedly scoring 300 (75%) and above, while a staggering 76% scored below 200 (below 50%). This highlights a systemic issue within our education sector indicating a significant lack of attention to this
very critical contributor to national development. This brings to limelight an obvious gap in the quality of education provided nationwide. Education remains a critical determinant of a nation's progress on the Human Development Index (HDI).

Unfortunately, Nigeria has continued to lag behind in education, reflected by its low HDI ranking of 164 out of the 191 countries measured. This places Nigeria far below other comparable nations like Iran, Egypt, Indonesia, Bangladesh and the Philippines which are within medium and high HDI. Though we claim as a nation that our literacy rate is above 50 percent, which is far below the global average of about 80% and continues to lag behind other comparable countries like Iran, Egypt, Indonesia, Bangladesh and the Philippines with literacy rates of above 70%. This again, underscores the systemic challenge in access to quality education, particularly in rural areas.

One of the consequences of the reported general poor performance in UTME is that with our population of over 200 million, Nigeria can only boast of about 2 million full-time students in different universities, while Iran with a population of over 89 million has over 8.2 million students in one University alone, Islamic Azad University, Bangladesh with a population of about 173 million boasts of over 2 million enrolled undergraduates in the National University of Bangladesh.

This underscores the urgency of the attention needed in our education sector. In solving this challenge, we must prioritise education as a key driver of development by aggressively investing in education, enhancing teacher training programs, and implementing inclusive policies.

A new Nigeria is indeed POssible! -PO

Travel / Re: Nigerian ‘Community’ Abroad is Toxic. by emkz: 4:07pm On May 09
This is too generic.

My reading of it applies to Nigerians and everyone else everywhere.

Most people are looking after their own interests. Once you find out their interests would require too much sacrifice from you, why not stay away?

There are pastors who claim they were called and collect money from struggling Nigerians both in Nigeria and abroad who follow them.

There are some Nigerians who get close and start getting jealous of you: wanting what you have including your network, your money, your wife and even your life. Why do you keep such relationships if something is not wrong with you?

Then there are Nigerians too. Professionals who always show up for one another. They help each other genuinely. When I was abroad many years ago, there was one. A woman. She showed me the way to settle and held my hand to avoid pitfalls. I returned the favour to others.

Pass it on.

Avoid needless competition. It is exhausting. Cooperate to advance each other. That is how the Indians and Chinese get ahead of blacks.

We must learn to punish bad behaviour in Nigeria to deter others.

Here is a business owner admitting he had to count his losses.

On the contrary, we saw someone who arrogated public land to himself. He lied about his worth of investments being demolished. He claimed what he built in 6 years, was demolished in six hours and he miraculously rebuilt in 6 days.

What is 666 again?

When he arrogated public land to himself, some Nigerians took his side against public interest.

Now that it became clear he lied about the worth of what was demolished, we all move on and he said he is open for business.

He did not apologize. He is not accountable. And we move on.

He misled the public. He ought to be arrested or fined to serve as a warning.

Politics / Re: First News Apologises To Gbajabiamila Over Alleged $30 Billion Fraud Story by emkz: 10:06am On May 09
This is a post I made about a broadcast media. The practice has been common among the print media over the years.

Recently, a media house popular among the GenZs has been doing what was done hush hush in media circles in the past, i.e., when journalists are PR consultants to some wealthy but shady businessmen, companies, and politicians. Some of them are used to plant stories in the media or used to kill stories that may potentially embarrass their paymasters.

Some of the journalists who write lengthy columns in their newspapers sometime sell those columns to the highest bidder, where they write to promote the paymaster or demonize the paymaster's enemies sometimes.

If you see someone writing castigating someone, be rest assured that the writer may have been paid heavily for that hatchet job.

Senior journalists know what I am talking about and won't deny this. Some senior journalists opened companies to get PR contracts from shady businessmen.

It is a multi-million naira business.

If you open any newspaper and you see a company getting some favourable press, the company paid for it.

Trust me, if not for the advent of online journalism with Fisayo Soyombo's Foundation for Investigative Journalism and Sahara Reporters, Yahaya Bello's case would not have made it to the press. Nor IBD Dende.

Another trick is that when you see a media house consistently attack someone, they want the person to come and settle.

Above is the business model of one of the controversial TV stations in Nigeria. But they now carry out their media assassination in full glare of all of us.

They repeat a lie consistently until it becomes gospel truth to buffoons. What sort of journalism is that?

If they didn't receive PR consulting contracts, why was one television station consistent in attacking the candidate of the APC while giving positive press to the candidates of PDP and LP? It was so bad that the media proprietor of the said media house launched a direct attack on the candidate of the APC.

That had never happened in the history of Nigerian politics.

Now, why is the same media house discrediting the coastal road project? Did Landmark retain them for PR? Remember that this same media house never interviewed anyone or gave rigorous coverage to the Emefiele trial as they did the cases they had an interest towards protecting.

What I explained above was drawn from a petition written by a dismissed editor of PUNCH newspapers against a former director of the newspaper some ten years ago, and from my own observation of the media business. It was common in the print media; it is now being brought to the fore in the broadcast media by the same controversial television station.

It is shameful.

Ladies and gentlemen, while it is sensible to seek information and entertainment from the media, never forget that it is a business and the highest bidder receives the best press coverage.

They are not after your interest.

Congratulations to her.
But I have Question:
How come Nigerians are very United when they are outside Nigeria. But when they are in Nigeria they are very divided?

The environment abroad limits hatred and competition among Nigerians. The true Nigerian spirit of mutual help and support is a survival tactic.

A Nigerian woman died and for several days, her neighbours did not know. It was a Nigerian from chruch who did not see her in church that raised alarm.

A competitive Nigerian who does not have the thinking of the greater good of all Nigerians but himself would most likely not have other Nigerians around him.

I live in US. Fund transfer is free. Completely free. You have options. You can use zelle, venmo or cashapps and same day delayed bank to bank transactions with no fees. Don't say what you don't know. You only have fees for wire transfer which is normal. What you have is a monthly payment of $1 - $10 to operate an account and that is for some certain account which is fast fading off. Banks now offer you extra money say 1% for using their debit cards to buy anything. Stop providing people with misinformation!

As seen in Quora. I won't disclose how I found out about it.

Bank transfers in the US can be relatively expensive compared to some other countries for a few reasons:

Interchange fees: When money is transferred between different banks, they may charge interchange fees to cover the costs of processing the transaction. These fees can vary between banks and can add to the overall cost of the transfer.

Wire transfer fees: Wire transfers, which are one method of transferring money between banks, can be particularly expensive in the US. Banks often charge fees for both outgoing and incoming wire transfers, which can range from $20 to $30 or more per transfer. These fees can add up, especially for international transfers.

Regulatory requirements: Banks in the US are subject to various regulations designed to prevent money laundering and fraud. Compliance with these regulations can add costs to the process of transferring money, which may be passed on to consumers in the form of higher fees.

Lack of competition: The US banking system is dominated by a relatively small number of large banks, which may have less incentive to offer lower transfer fees due to limited competition. In some other countries with more competitive banking sectors, transfer fees may be lower as banks compete for customers.

Legacy systems: Some banks in the US still rely on older, legacy systems for processing payments, which can be less efficient and more costly than newer technologies used in other countries.

Different types of transfers: Different types of transfers have different costs associated with them. For example, ACH (Automated Clearing House) transfers are generally cheaper than wire transfers but can take longer to process.

Overall, a combination of factors such as interchange fees, wire transfer fees, regulatory requirements, competition, legacy systems, and the types of transfers used can contribute to the relatively higher cost of bank transfers in the US compared to some other countries.

Who signed that law? Do they know what is 0.5%? If you transfer 100million, you have to pay 500k to FG. They are taking money from Capital not interest. Money from physical money. You don't tax physical money. You tax trade. That means when you move your money around, you end up losing millions to gov? You can do a business of 100m and not make 500k as profit. Why are people still sitting at home?

Banks in the US charge money for funds transfers. They call it fees.

My take is that extensive consultations be done before rolling out these things.

Like I said, we have a revenue problem. Attempts to improve the revenue standing are welcome. I only ask that some initial measures be taken to plug leakages before rolling out these long-term measures.

I also think it may be useful to capture the unbanked population first instead of scaring them away.
