Foreign Affairs / Catalonia Referendum: Madrid Court Fines Organisers by Emmanuelbruno: 9:00pm On Sep 21, 2017 |
There were protests outside a Barcelona court deciding whether to free pro-independence Catalan officials Spain's constitutional court has imposed daily fines of up to €12,000 (£10,600; $14,300) on top Catalan officials for every day they continue organising a banned referendum. Among those threatened is Josep Maria Jove, a top Catalan treasury official, who is being held on sedition charges. More than a dozen Catalan politicians arrested Wednesday are yet to appear in court in Barcelona. Separatist supporters have been protesting outside the court. The constitutional court says the vote is illegal but the region's vice-president said it would go ahead if possible. Oriol Junqueras admitted that police action on Wednesday to disrupt planning for the 1 October referendum, including seizing about 10 million voting slips from a warehouse, had "altered the state of play". But he said "everything is being done" to allow the vote to proceed. Spain plays cat and mouse as Catalan vote looms Does Catalonia want to leave Spain? Spain poised to seize Catalan finances Six senior officials face fines of up to €12,000, while a further 16 officials could be fined €6,000 per day, reported Efe news agency. Earlier, left-wing trade union CGT called for strikes in October after the scheduled referendum. Although the referendum itself now looks less likely to take place, the already hostile relationship between Catalonia and Madrid has been exacerbated, says the BBC's Guy Hedgecoe in Barcelona. Media captionCatalonia's separatist government is defying a Constitutional Court order to halt the 1 October vote Police searches on Wednesday in Barcelona, the Catalan capital, sparked mass street protests. Police said up to 40,000 people gathered outside the devolved government's economy ministry in the city, which was searched. Several hundred stayed on past midnight and some scuffles were reported and objects were thrown as police tried to exit the building. Meanwhile, comments by Catalan President Carles Puigdemont were denounced as "lying, cheating and manipulating" by a Madrid government official in Catalonia. Mr Puigdemont had accused the central government of effectively suspending devolution after it moved to seize control of regional finances to stop them being used to fund the referendum. Media captionThe referendum issue has been peaceful so far but police scuffled with Catalan demonstrators this week Separatist parties who control the Catalan parliament pushed through the referendum law earlier this month after unsuccessfully demanding for years the right to hold a free vote on self-determination. Catalonia, a wealthy region of 7.5 million people in north-eastern Spain, has its own language and culture but is not recognised as a separate nation by the Spanish state. http://www.bbc.com/news/ |
Politics / Why I Don't Believe In Biafra by Emmanuelbruno: 3:15pm On Sep 15, 2017 |
In every endeavour in life there is a limit. A red line that when you reach it you pause and reflect. You think about the outcome because a step further will not only redefine your future but also for the future of those around you. Nnamdi Kanu was approaching that line when he called Nigeria a zoo and threatened to unleash terror. He reached the line when he violated bail conditions and insulted the president and commander in chief of arm forces. He crossed the line when he declared no election in Anambra state and created his Biafra Secret Services (BSS). Now it does not matter what I think or who I stand with. But any man who is not willing to suffer or die for the course he created and believed in is a scam. If Kano is as half dedicated to his course as his IPOB followers he would have surrendered to the Nigeria army. But no Kanu loves his freedom, he loves his life so he is hiding under his bed while the Nigerian army uses his followers for target practice. No man worth my tears let alone my blood. In 1970, even before the war end, Ojukwu handed over to his deputy and ran away to Ivory coast after sending millions of Igbos to early grave because of his course. He came back few years after only to contest for a senator in a country he went to war with, a war that claim the lives of more than 3 million Igbos. That action alone is a betrayal to his course and an insult to the souls of those who lost their lives in the Biafra war. He lost the election to an unpopular candidate. After that he started again the Biafra agitation. In 1999 at the arrival of democracy, he abandoned Biafra agitation and contested for president. Of course he lost and resumes Biafra agitation. The same thing happened in 2003. That is selfishness. By and large, any Igbo man who believes that a change of territorial name, [ a region with no enough fertile land for agriculture and depend on food from other region for survival; a landlocked territory and an enclave inside Nigeria] will make his life better is delusional. Let’s demand a better life from our local government chairmen, our state house of representative members, our governors, our federal house of rep members and our senator. They are the ones closer to us. It is through our demand from these people for accountability that our region will be the way we want it. |

Foreign Affairs / President Trump's Daughter Ivanka To Get Office In White House by Emmanuelbruno: 10:15am On Mar 21, 2017 |
President Trump's daughter Ivanka to get White House office 21 March 2017 US & Canada President Trump's daughter Ivanka will get an office in the White House, an administration official has said. But she will not have an official title or salary when she works in the West Wing - the hub of US executive power. The official also confirmed media reports that the 35-year-old would have access to classified information. Her role will be to serve as Donald Trump's "eyes and ears" while providing broad-ranging advice, her attorney was quoted as saying by Politico. Ivanka, who has her own fashion brand, will be joining her husband Jared Kushner, who is a senior adviser to the president. The couple's reported influence on the president has raised questions about possible conflicts of interests. It has also triggered debates whether there are clear boundaries between the Trump family's political and business activities. Since Mr Trump's inauguration in January, Ivanka has been seen attending meetings with world leaders, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. |
Politics / BBC Explanation On The Current Fuel Scarcity by Emmanuelbruno: 5:55pm On Apr 07, 2016 |
Nigeria fuel crisis: Why is Africa's largest oil producer
short of petrol?
7 April 2016 Africa
Despite being one of the world's biggest oil producers,
Nigeria imports most of its fuel and is currently facing a
severe shortage.
It does not have enough oil refineries and even if the four it
has were running at full capacity, they would only supply a
quarter of the country's needs, says John Ashbourne, an
economist at the financial research firm Capital Economics.
To meet demands, the national oil company imports around
50% of its fuel needs. The remainder is then supposed to be
imported by private fuel distributors.
But for months these companies have been reducing their
imports leading to the current fuel shortages.
The BBC's Nigeria correspondent Martin Patience looks at
three reasons why:
1) Outstanding debts
For years, the Nigerian government paid a fuel subsidy to
make it cheaper at the pump. But it was hugely expensive
when the price of oil was high.
The current government, which came to power last May,
said it inherited massive debts from the previous
administration.
Fuel distributors were initially left out of pocket.
Finally, the government paid the bill in November. But by
that time, companies had already started slowing fuel
imports.
2) Currency crisis
The slump in global oil prices is hammering the Nigerian
economy.
It has led to a shortage of the US dollars needed to pay for
imports.
With the country facing a currency crisis, the distributors are
struggling to get their hands on dollars to pay for fuel
imports.
They say they are being forced to use the black market
where they pay a far higher rate.
3) Fuel subsidy dispute
In January, the government ended official fuel subsides
saying the cost of oil had fallen so much that they were no
longer required.
But the fuel distributors disagree.
In protest, some companies stopped selling fuel during this
dispute.
As the shortages increased, others hiked their prices above
the official government rate - leading to accusations of
profiteering.
Some analysts predict that until the fuel subsidy is
reintroduced or official retail rates are allowed to rise,
distributors will continue to limit the supply.
And for Nigerian motorists that could mean the long wait at
the pumps will go on.
