Don’t mind Leyqute. He knows ETH has the power and can do whatever he likes (including instilling team discipline). I guess he did it to the great Ronaldo, without the club’s backing, reason Ronaldo is still here infecting the other players with Pogba’s virus.
Ronaldo messed up, he was kicked out. Sancho did his own, he was kicked out. But but the manager wasn't backed, or he does not have the power to put any player in their place. I don't understand what else they need to happen to show that the manager is fully in control. These things happen in most other clubs too, so its not a Manchester United problem. Arteta sold some top players when they misbehaved or didn't agree with him. Pep pushed Cancelo out even when he was a top performer for the club because of some internal issues, not for footballing reasons. ETH didn't experience what others have not experienced before

Jaap Stam and Roy Keane had issues with SAF and they were shipped off almost immediately. Rio Ferdy said there was a time he complained about SAF’s tactics and he got an earful later on.

If you don’t stay in line, SAF would get rid of you. And he had the club’s backing (David Gill) to do so.

No manager had that kind of authority after he left. Mourinho o. Ole and ETH. That’s why Pogba, Sancho and Martial could do anyhow. The rottenness was allowed. If a player perceives the board doesn’t trust and respect the coach, anyhowness will happen.

How is this different from what happened under ETH? Were the players not shipped away? Sancho is currently hawked around Europe for a buyer. Which heaven has fallen under ETH when he got rid of Ronaldo and Sancho?

The point is that shiit shouldn’t have happened at all.

If players are afraid to do that rubbish during Fergie’s time, why should they be bold about doing it now?
During Fergie time, there were some incidents too, we just didn't have social media as we have noq. Maybe ETH should have just stoned Ronaldo boot like Fergie did

If ETH was well respected and all, the Ronaldo ish would never have gotten public. Also Sancho no go get mind dey post nonsense for social media. How many players have done that shiit, even in this modern age?

That all that ish became a prolonged media drama means he doesn’t have as much authority as he should. Cancelo took his disagreement over not starting personal and challenged Pep in the wrong manner. He was shipped out of the club in weeks.

Real Madrid has more stars than Utd but you’ll never see their players brazenly speak against their coach in public WHILE still at the club.

Nah. Let’s not tolerate rubbish from over pampered over pompous players.
The point is that ETH could have stamped on anybody and heaven won't fall He should have done what he needed to do to restore discipline if he felt the club was lacking discipline

I don’t know if the arrogant idiot will come good. We should never have given him that power in the first place. But because of the mess we’ve put ourselves in over the years and how he was the best candidate at the time we hired him, i can understand why we would succumb to his demands.

Now that foul yanshe has been exposed, the best way forward is to reduce his powers. He’ll have some say in who comes in but he won’t be in charge.

ETH is a terrible recruiter and talent identifier. There no doubt about that. However that’s not what we hired him for. There’s a good coach in there, based on his previous jobs. It would be a shame to sack a Physics teacher because he was terrible at teaching business studies.
We will find out soon.

Culture, rules, regulations etc, ETH had the power to do something about them. He fought off Ronaldo and the club took his side. He was not some helpless rookie coach with no power and just a figurehead

It’s not hard to identify a good player. If you know what qualities are important in what parts of the field, you’ll easily know who’s good and who’s not.

Also, it doesn’t matter how big or small a club is, a coach should not be allowed to be in full control of transfer decisions, especially in this age. It must be a joint effort. Look at Arsenal, City and other topr clubs. Things don change.
I agree with you. However ETH had the power. He asked for it and was trusted with it. He failed and now we are hoping when we give him the players he didn't recommend, he will come good?

I don’t have experience operating a football club so i can’t say I’m the best candidate to turn things around.

But if i were to correct the anomaly, I’d start with changing the environment first.

Culture. Rules. Regulations. Process. Procedures. Everything concerning both players and coach should be well defined and unambiguous.

Then I’ll ensure the players and coaches have the best equipment and operating schedules. How do they prepare for games, what can be done to improve it? To world standards. How is the coach approaching team harmony, tactics, and what not? What can be done to improve it? Do we need to get rid of some players who don’t fit in?

Once that is defined, you can move on to recruitment and what kinds of players you want to bring in.

That’s just a brief of how I’d approach it. It’s easier to hold people accountable for their jobs when they are given the best conditions to work in.
I agree with you but I must ask
Which of these can ETH fix?

If a coach’s ability doesn’t depend on the quality of their players..if they are judged purely on what they can do with brick and mortar, why are Brentford fans not dreaming of winning the league? Why did Burnley relegate despite beating almost everyone in the championship?

A good coach needs good players. That’s just the truth. If not, Klopp wouldn’t splash 70m on VVD.

The way we played was a consequence of the available players. It is tied to recruitment, culture, mentality and what not.

Else Mourinho, who has won several titles in several countries, wont say finishing second with Rashford and co is one of the biggest achievements of his coaching career.
A good coach needs good players, I agree. If not, ETH won't what he splashed on the players he has bought so far.

ETH's contract gave him a lot of power. What did he do with that power? Now I hear the solution is to take away the power from him. Then when players he didn't recommend are bought and don't deliver because of his rubbish style, some of you here will blame the board as usual

We both know buying lots of players isn’t the solution, else CheLSea would’ve won the league. It’s about buying the right players for the right style.

You have gone extreme. Even the coach was sacked

Of the 12 players bought in the last couple of years, how many of them would you term a good buy considering their age, technicality, ability and fit with the style?
They are good enough for ETH. Even Mctom is rated as a technical player under ETH

Like I said earlier, you’re taking a blanket approach to everything, including the two seasons. You can’t be objective if you keep doing that.
I'm open to seeing something positive. I asked twice and you have not mentioned one thing

So you mean after over a dozen transfers, we can't point at something positive in the way we play after 2 years under ETH?

You’ve decided to examine the two season as one. I’m choosing to take it on a one by one basis. Afterall, the two seasons were not glued together.

If you believe Rashford was the one bailing us out in his first season, covering ETH’s ineptitude, can we say the same thing about Bellingham and Ancelotti at Real Madrid? Or Rodri and Pep Guardiola?

You said injury doesn’t matter but Pep lost almost all his games when Rodri got injured. Injuries to core players are very impacting to team performance.

The game is the game.

Had things gone better in the league last season and we finished top 4/3, you won’t be this critical of the coach. You’d be asking InEos to get him more players instead.

Like I said, his first season was a step in the right direction. The last season was several steps taken backward.
If City was playing rubbish in Rodri absence, then Pep is rubbish. If RM played rubbish and Bellingham was bailing them, Ancelloti is rubbish too. I believe we both agree on that.

I'll still be critical even if we finished top 4 because we won't go far playing the way we played, and I don't just focus on the scoreline or results. If we managed to enter top 4, its not because we were good but because others were worse. What then happens when others become good, probably because they had a one off bad season? Where will we find ourselves?

INEOS will need to invest in the squad and team for the new coach- whoever they may be, to have any modicum of success.

If they don’t do it right away, they’ll be forced to do it when the same players who will play well at the beginning of the new coach’s tenure, down tools when things get a little though, or when they have a lil disagreement with him.

Several things need fixing at United- culture, player’s professionalism, mentality, environment and the entire medical and transfer department.
So we will be starting afresh?

Last season he had credits in the bank given how his first season was. Add to this the fact that we’ve been there before with other coaches- where players for no reason stop running and also gets injured anyhow. That’s why he should be cut some slack.

Next season he won’t have that much credit considering how his second season went, in addition to a good TW.
He has had two seasons to half the rot at least. But our best players regressed instead. Even the first season, Rashford picked form and was bailing the team for a long time. Some of us knew it was just a matter of time before everything come crashing down and it did last season. We will play nonsense and end up with a win, deceiving some people, not me.

Even the match where more than half of the players that started were players he bought, they played rubbish and we end up blaming injuries

You’re being intentionally harsh with your criticism and you know it.

How is the last two years a waste when, considering where we were, he made top 4 and won a title in his first year? How many teams in the last couple of years went from being out of top 4 to competing for the league in the whole of Europe over the last decade?

Ten Hag’s first year was a step in the right direction. The last season is not. End of.
Assuming he leaves today, what will the new coach build on exactly?

Have you considered if “the way he played” last season wasn’t exactly what he wanted to put out?

That’s by the way tho. He is responsible for the team’s performance. and This season is do or die. If we keep playing poorly and keep losing games, he’ll be out before December.

The hope is that INEOS don’t sit on their hands before it gets bad bad. Next season could be a another step in the wrong direction

You say my criticism is harsh and also expect him to be sacked half season if we keep playing poorly. If its that harsh should half season sack not be doing too much considering his first season and all the trophies he has won?

It’s a result-based game.

If ETH starts winning, most of the “crucify him” crooners here will keep quiet. A lot will change mouth immediately. Some will even say they supported him in the first place even when they were blaming him for pitch texture, VAR decisions, and wind density .

Failure has no friends.
One thing is sure. He can't "start winning" playing like he did last season. So if he can correct his head, and do the right thing, he will be cut some slack. But it just means he wasted two years

Pep has always credited the recruitment team at City for the signings even though he gets all the credit. He does not identify the players he will be consulted of course.

“The most important department is the scouting department, much more than manager and players,” he said. “When Txiki Begiristain and [others] choose well, 80% is done. When they don’t, you spend a lot of time and energy [trying to redress this]. That’s my feeling.”

Ilkay Gündogan, another brought in under Begiristain, has impressed in the holding role this season with Rodri injured and Fernandinho having to cover in central defence. The German did likewise towards the end of last season and Guardiola admitted to being wrong about Gündogan’s ability to operate there.
That's what we want to see from this transfer windows going forward. I will be more interested in the "Not Obvious" signings. This will be a testament of how good our scouting system can be. If I still read about us going after obvious signings, I just know those scouts are doing nothing

Unfortunately, this isn't what we are talking about in the UTD context...

If you check Patrick's post, he clearly stated that the DoF should sign players who are best fit for the pattern of play the club adopts... apparently for continuity and sustainability. In this regard it is the manager that has to "adapt", and not the other way round. With this, we can also assume that the DoF would literally be the one to also "pick" the coach that would be best suited to the club's football philosophy.

I actually agree that the DoF should identify and maybe recommend players to the manager....at least for a club that is still struggling to get back to its glory days...However, for the purpose of accountability, the gaffer's voice should still carry more weight -we all know who gets the heat when things go south
No the gaffer voice should not carry more weight. The coach is supposed to understand how the club wants to play and decide whether to accept or reject the contract
