phantom:

how do you want doctors to fight Ebola without PPEs?
everybody is insulting the doctors but have you people ever asked whether the govt has done what its supposed to do?

You're probabably a doctor
and maybe a junior one if you are

Have you noticed that miltary heads do not complain of resources, only the junior men do

Look at this scenario from a Snr management point of view:
NMA calls an emergency meeting with FGN to temporarily suspend strike
they demand instant access to a couple of millions and explain why it is needed
They (not FGN) mobilize the resources into strategizing for PPEs
(not PPE's for everyone, but those on the front line)

They create heat maps of potential areas such as lagos and ensure that special units with all that is needed are spedily set up

Do you honsestly think that all Nigerians will not rally round the doctors to see that this small gesture is not acheived?

And besides, will you say that all Nigerian military men even those at home should have bullet proof vests and armoured cars?

I never finish yet o

4)
If you tell your spouse that you'll prepare eba for dinner
your spouse expects to see eba, soup and meat

If instead your spouse sees eba, rice, pounded yam, plantain, akamu,
all in the same measure on the table ... na confusion be that
no matter your good intentions you cant say that eba was for dinner

The strike by the NMA is too multi faceted plus money come even join am

Everybody could as well go on strike in Nigeria and say that condition, road, wife husband, light are the issues that should be resolved

.. I neva finish yet

You made your points. I agree with some and query some others
My family tree is laden with doctors, and I have lots of friends that are both doctors and other type of health professionals.
Make i join this matter small.

1)
the nigerian soldier whose neck was cut on youtube video was on a salary of 40K
...harzard of a unique kind

2)
When the ebola thing surfaced, some of us expected the strike to be temporarily called off
to adress the ebola challenge
this would have shown the other nigerians that the strike was driven by principles

At least NMA for negotiate with FGN to set up a small insurance pot for doctors and other health officials
just for the duration of the ebola issue
..but no, it looked like a good tool to blackmail the FGN, and unwittingly Nigerians
this is really, really worrying

3)
The good doctor is not being praised for risking her life in treating Patrick Sawyer
No,..she's being praised for being intelligent enough to restrict his movement thereby saving Nigeria
from what would have been a biological catastrophy

You notice that others are not being praised that much. It is not because they are 'lowly' nurses
,..its just that act of intelligence which saved us that is being praised

Now, if the NMA doctors had an emergency meeting and forsook their demands temporartily just for this
they would have been considered heroes too

Accepting that APC = PDP

When his anger had subsided
Ola had time to reflect
No matter what he thought of Ribadu, he couldnt in all honesty say that
Ribadu was a retrogressive while Tima Sylvia was a progressive ...Mbanu

You see,
humans are extremely simple beings in need of simple labels
he needed a new label for what was happening in the polity

BARGAIN AND ACCEPTANCE -Ola now resigned to the conclusion that APC = PDP

After accepting this new realization, Ola stopped his unpaid e-warrior taunts of PDP boys
he foccused more on the religious and romance section

Now that Ola is battle weary,
hopefully he'll be more susceptible to some reasoning
which I hope to share with him in the next thread

Pendulums are made to swing

Then the tide began to turn slowly
The 'progressively' baptised poiliticians such as FFK were decamping to the PDP
There were also grumbles from people such as Ikimi that Tinibu had a dictatorial proclitivity

..Ola was now begining to question silently the 'progressiveness' of APC

Then something strange happened
Ribadu, the poster boy for APCs "progressive' credential decamped to the retrogressive party PDP

ANGER -Ola couldn't belive it,
"Ribadu must be stupid",
"he cannot be trusted,
"he's got a fickle character"

The "new PDP" rebels soon decamped and moved into APC, Atiku followed closely behind
All colour of Politicians who had sank the Nigerian ship began to move in drove to rescue the same ship
this time, under the platform of APC
Ola pointed this out with spiteful glee to the PDP paid laptop gang and their unpaid minions

Haba Ola..
My mum once told me that if a Nigerian goat moves to America, it remains a goat
...But this time, an American goat

Ola did not buy this nonsense
DENIAL -Ola rationalised that that the 'retrogressive'stained governors had seen the light and were now 'progressives'

All hail the progressives

Ola was happy when APC came into existence from the merger of ACN and CPC
He considered ACN to be a progressive party and was happy to bestow the same consideration
on the APC which had subsumed it
He was constantly on Nairaland as an e-warrior sparring against the PDP Nairaland goons

When the party APC in its maiden visits consulted with IBB and Obasanjo
and emplored their help in rescuing the sinking ship called Nigeria

Ola was a little bit worried about the invitation of 'retrogressives' to the side of a 'progressives'
Ola pushed this aside

...DENIAL -APC was Ola's very progressive party

Introduction

I wrote an article here
https://www.nairaland.com/1864112/change-management-pdp-apc-terrorism

the article connects to this, and is an attempt to work my way through socio-political happenings
positing that although APC = PDP, yet they do have some distinct ideological fragments that can be pointed to

To keep it short and simmple without losing the meat, I'll create another thread to draw out some 'ideological' distinctions

I have used a character called Ola which is non-existent to draw out some points

The bottomline however is not to GIVE one's money anyhow to lazy, able bodied relations & friends who will enjoy (on owambes, parties, frolicking etc) the result of one's self-deprivation that resulted in the savings itself.
Better to channel it towards education and health initiatives for clearly under-privileged children towards a better society overall.

over the years
i've learnt not to advice people on the technicality of giving, except they seek such opinion
or I suspect that their actions are ruled by hypnotic fear from which they at least faintly desire to unlock themselves from

some folks actually feel fulfilled only when they hollow themselves out to others
some parents fry akara in order to give their teenage sons money to buy beer so the sons don't suffer from inferiority complex

ridimic1: i am intending msc student whose plan is to later settle in the us,i am also a staunch giver(didnt mean to brag ). from what i have gathered is that when you are living abroad ,ur spending is limited and are always proper. a dollar or pound is always meant for something..i also heard people hardly pay tithe and they pay little offerings and all these leading to stingyness..so im asking those in diaspora...will my coming abroad affecting my already built spending nigeria culture, those who are givers ,did it affect you ?becos i dnt wna loose d giving attitude while abroad..thanks

I'm not sure if your ascription of "GIVING" is:
1) meant soley within the christian tradition of church related giving
or
2) if it also encompasses your 'above average' generosity to all (both religious and others)

I'll assume is the second and make suggestions based on this.

You'll learn to be wiser with your money if in the UK...
so you can easilly continue with your giving if you are ready
to deprive yourself of some little comforts.

For example, you can walk instead of taking the bus or train, save on heating, cook always, avoid nigerian foods that are expensive, buy cheap basic clothing etc

But while doing this, avoid using your credit card to sponsor your genorosity.

Along the line, if you have a good source of income (either through God's reward, luck, or smartness) you can then afford to be both generous and spendthrift in luxury

Semi conclusion

The beauty of the change management model is that it helps us
in understanding where people are emotianlly positioned

when you understand this,
you are better placed in dealing with them appropriately
or exploiting them if you wish

I'll now try to create another thread
to give us a fresh perspective on APC vs PDP
drawing on the change management concept

As the bombings went on,
we began to consider how we could bargain with the Haramites
and like GEJ said,
We re now living with the knowledge that terrorism
is now part of our national ife

You can do a further search on the concept in google

Resistance to change

At first when Boko Haram started with their bombings and suicide bombing
the Nigerian government and people were in denial
"we love our lives so much" we said.
"we cant kill ourselves"

as the bombing went on, we got upset
"it must be those northerners that don't want a southerner to rule"
"it is the PDP"
"it is the APC"
"it is an islamic agenda"
"it is because GEJ is weak"

All of this anger whipped up sentiments and helped
in aligning us with the different political parties

stages of grief

In change management, there is a model we call the 4 (or 5) stages of grief.
It goes like this:

1) Denial
2) Anger
3) Bargaining
4) Depression
5) Acceptance

In summary, the model suggests that when there is a sudden change,
people first resist, then if they realise that they are helpless in stopping the change,
they try to make the best of the situation

The stages don't always come in that order.
And in some complicated scenario, you might find different stages running in parrallel

I'll give an example of this stages using Nigeria and Boko Haram

If it is our person that said "there is God" everywhere goes agog.

I don't know if the story is factual,
but I'll go ahead to recalibrate your thinking

the bolded statement when reasoned in English sound like a cry from one that previously doubted the existence of God
and so he planned
an built an iron dome that has done a lot of protection so far

however, when the protection failed
and doom lurked
something (luck, God, or whatever) stepped in
and saved the day
only then (after the miracle) did the commander cry out "there is a God"

...so if our person says "there is God", YES we will go agog
simply because we know that that means that if God delivers us from the first problem he expects us to deliver ourselves from the next
not to only eat fufu and and pray

I think those who shout their unrelenting love for this country in spite of the mess she is in are the real enemies we need to do away with if we ever hope to make this country great again.

I love my country and I hope to be her president one day but the fact remains that there is not much to be proud of yet.

THE DINOSUAR STORY

FATHER: "My son, I'll tell you a story. Listen attentively"

"By whatever fluke of nature
a prehistoric dinosaur egg hatched in the thick forrests of Africa

The lurch unchartted greens of the wild provided a nuturing canopy for the Dinosaur to grow undisturbed by man
With the passing of time, now standing over 10 foot, the dinosaur became obvious to the human eye

seeking some adventure, it wondered away from the wild into a village

When the villagers saw him they were first seized with fear
what manner of monster was this?

The villagers soon overcame fear, and all they could see was a massive meat on two legs
they banded together with clubs, stones and sticks
determined to make a carving off this new delicacy that must have been sent by the Gods

There was one in the village that had some knowledge
He recognised at once that this was a rare happening.
This beast standing before them was more valuable than being mere meat
he pleaded with them to stop and sought to share this nugget of information with them
the villagers would have none of this
...this was meat on two legs provided by the Gods for their contentment.

And so they killed the dinosaur, roasted and ate it
and with this, they roasted an oppurtunity to be in the annals of great kingdoms."

SON: "father, what does this story mean?"

FATHER: "Son, look around you. The villagers are armed with their clubs"

I look forward to being proud of Nigeria

Now I ask you,
If your mum was a known prostitute
Would you sincerely say that you are proud to be her son
No matter how you much you love her??,
.. I bet you wont

You'd only be proud of something that fills others with a glorious awe
For example, when you go to a Nigerian airport with your green passport,
and are harrased by your own Nigerian officials
while the queue with holders of British and American passports are treated with deference
Are you proud to be a Nigerian at that moment?
.....I doubt you are

So I repeat,
...i'm not proud to be a Nigerian
but I'm extremely proud to be someone who wishes my country Nigeria well

....as much as a dad will wish well for his erring son so that he can someday be proud of him

How we project Nigeria to the world

I'll move on to the Character of Nigeria
I'll avoid being intellectually gibberish here
I love my fellow Nigerians -whatever that means
I seek to bring out our best narratives in public spaces, especially foreign ones
but when I sit back to objectively appraise who we are,
or rather what the world says we are because of our extremely visible few I recoil
I'm not talking about the crooks -every country has them
I'm talking about our official representatives and their supporters

...I mean if a critical mass of our leaders are world reknown fraudsters
then that is our real character no matter how saintly you are.
I'll stop there to keep this short

And Our national vision is...

Let's start with its aspirations
the over-arching aspiration of Nigeria is plain:
"that the country remains one no matter the cost to its individuals"
The pursuit of our eternal unity is why each state produces a minister,
and why we have a federal character charter devoid of the need of a meritocratic character.

Obasanjo, IBB and other political elites might like that
..it serves their purpose
...it doesnt serve mine

Now, don't get me wrong. I do not wish for a disintegration
but, I'd rather that our primary aspirations be for values that are globally enduring
I mean there is a difference between marrying a wife for love and companionship
rather than the primal need for a cook.

Choose the second, and you'd be extremely lucky to get the first
choose the first, and the other things will be added unto you.
