Crime / Cook Absconds With Employer’s N68million by eyezgal(f): 1:48pm On Mar 16, 2012
A Togolese cook, Alex Flole Timo, has absconded with his employer’s $425,000, equivalent of N68 million.

The incident occurred at Femi Okunu Estate, in Lekki, Eti-Osa, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria.

When all efforts to locate the fleeing suspect proved abortive, his guarantors identified as Iredia Reuben, a security guard and Favour Ezekiel, were arrested by the police.

They were arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court on a 2-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

The police at Maroko Division, Lekki, Lagos, alleged in their charge sheet that the accused were arrested following complaints by Felicia Omueti that her cook, Alex Flole Timo, stole her husband’s USD425,000 entrusted in her care and escaped.

All efforts by her and the two guarantors to locate his whereabouts proved futile.

She further stated that on the fateful day, 29 February, 2012, she left Alex at home and before her return, he was no where to be found.

She later discovered that the money belonging to her husband in her care had been stolen and that she suspected the guarantors to have connived with him to steal the money.

The police arrested the guarantors and took them to the station. During interrogation the duo allegedly admitted introducing the cook to the woman, but claimed that they didn’t know the whereabouts of the suspect and the missing money.

After investigation, the guarantors were charged to court for conspiracy and stealing; an offence the prosecutor Sergeant Babatunde Julius, claimed contravenes Section 409 and 285 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.

One of the counts read: “That you Iredia Reuben, 32 and Favour, 28 and two others now at large on the same date, time and place in the aforesaid Magisterial District, did steal the sum of USD425,000.”

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges when it was read to them in the open court, and the presiding magistrate, Mr. W. B. Balogun admitted them to bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties each in like sum who must show proof of tax payment to the Lagos State government.

He adjourned the matter till 9 April 2012 for mention.

When the accused could not perfect their bail conditions in good time, they were moved to Ikoyi and Kirikiri Prisons.

Politics / Illegal Checkpoints: Eight Arrested In Abia by eyezgal(f): 4:27pm On Mar 05, 2012
Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Abubakar had directed that all police check points be dismantled.

The suspects were arrested for flouting the Acting IGP’s directive.

Commissioner of Police Bala Hassan told reporters in Umuahia that they would go through orderly-room trial.

Hassan said Abubakar has set up a team of policemen to monitor compliance to his directive .

The Police Comissioner said the command has also set up a monitoring team to ensure compliance.

Hassan said the suspects mounted illegal checkpoints early in the morning and late at night.

He said: “The Acting IGP’s team will also assess the condition of those detained in police cells. I have directed that all police cells be decongested.

“The command has been complying with the Acting IGP’s directive, except for check points on the boundaries with sister states. They will remain so for security reasons.

“The directive does not mean that policemen should be off the road entirely, but that they should be patrolling the highways and state roads without stopping commuters and disturbing the free flow of traffic.”

Hassan said policemen still have the right to stop and search cars suspected to be carrying something illegal.

He said the HighWay Patrol team has been directed to stop checking vehicle particulars and face the job of ensuring accident-free highways.

He said the command has mapped out strategies to curb crime.

Nairaland / General / Police Use Tree Shade As Area Office by eyezgal(f): 4:22pm On Mar 02, 2012
Police officers at the recently created Area ‘M’ Police Command, Idimu, Lagos State now perform office activities under the shade of a Nim tree (popularly known as Dongonyaro) because there are no offices for them.

Some of the departments located under the tree include Juvenile, Human Rights and Anti-robbery sections as well as other administrative desks.

Each department set its tables and chairs under the tree to obtain statements from both the complainants and suspects.

It was also gathered that the police authorities and members of the Police Community Relations Committee, PCRC, committee are yet to build offices for them as promised since the command was commissioned.

Investigation by P.M.NEWS revealed that the command has about 19 departments, but many of the offices are located under the tree. And there is no cell to detain suspects.

Some residents expressed doubt about the state of the police command.

“If the authorities were not ready to make the place a command, why did they hasten to commission it?” one resident asked.

When contacted, the Lagos State Police Command Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Supol Joseph Jaiyeoba, said Area ‘M’ Police Command, Idimu, is new and as such the authorities expect the police officers in the command to be patient until offices are provided for them.

He said they cannot compare themselves with area commands that have been in existence for many years.

When asked how soon the situation will be normalised, Jaiyeoba said:

“The Lagos State government promised to build offices for all the five newly created police area commands including Area ‘M’ Police Command in Idimu. We hope this will be done very soon.”

Crime / Pakistani & Anambra Man Nabbed With N120 Million Heroin By Ndlea by eyezgal(f): 3:11pm On Mar 02, 2012
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has prevented the perilous incursion of a Pakistani drug cartel into Nigeria with 13 kilogrammes of high grade heroin. Operatives of the anti-drug Agency at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos aborted the plot with the prompt arrest of a 35 year-old Pakistani with the parcels of brownish powdery substances that tested positive for heroin hidden inside his hand luggage. Officials described the heroin as high grade with an estimated street value of about 120 million naira.

According to the NDLEA Airport commander, Mr. Hamza Umar, the suspect, Syed Waseem Ahmed Buhari with Pakistani international passport number BT3347071 arrived aboard a Qatar Airways flight. “A 35 year old Pakistani was apprehended following the discovery of 13 kilogrammes of high grade heroin in his hand luggage. A Nigerian clearing and forwarding agent by name Okereke Benjamin Chukwudi, 42, who is suspected to be an accomplice have also been arrested and investigation had commenced” Hamza stated.

Syed, an electrical engineer who hails from Karachi is believed to be working for a Pakistani based drug cartel. He was found to have travelled from Karachi to Abu Dhabi aboard Pakistan Airline flight before taking Qatar airways flight through Doha to Lagos. The suspected Nigerian accomplice, Okereke Benjamin Chukwudi who hails from Ekulobia, Anambra State is cooperating with narcotic investigators.

NDLEA boss added that the arrest of the Pakistani few days after three Bolivians were caught in a suspected case of methamphetamine production is a demonstration of the Agency’s resolve to bring drug traffickers to justice. “The anti-drug crusade is total and must be pursued with determination. While working hard to prevent the involvement of our citizens in drug trafficking, the Agency will resist attempt by foreigners to smuggle drugs into the country. The NDLEA Act applies to all culprits. We shall yet be more vigilant and ensure that illicit drugs are intercepted in our country”Giade stated.

The NDLEA boss commended the officers for the arrest and urged them to remain dedicated to duty at all times. Both suspects will be charged to court soon.

MAIDUGURI— Joint Task Force, JTF, spokesman, Lt.-Col. Hassan Mohammed, said yesterday in Maiduguri, that JTF killed four suspected members of Jamaatu Ahlil Sunna lidawati wal Jihad, aka Boko Haram.

He said this while parading the corpses of the sect members at the spot where they were killed at Bayan-Quarters in the metropolis.

The suspects were reportedly driving a Volkswagen Golf saloon car painted in taxi colour at 6:30pm, Wednesday, when they were accosted by JTF members.

Nairaland / General / Police Arrest Man For Grandmother’s Kidnap by eyezgal(f): 10:43am On Mar 02, 2012
BENIN—A 28-year-old man, Kelvin Osagie, who allegedly masterminded the kidnap of his grandmother, Madam Victor Aiwerioghene, has been arrested by men from the Intelligence Unit of Zone 5 Command of the Nigeria Police, Benin, Edo State.

According to police sources, Omoruyi was said to have confessed to the crime, insisting that it was Osagie who contacted him and another suspect, now at large, to execute the plot.

According to a statement: “The police went after the said Kelvin Osagie, got him arrested and will charge him to court after investigation had been concluded.”

Religion / Holy Spirit Instructed Me To Remove Object From Her Mouth by eyezgal(f): 11:35am On Mar 01, 2012
This could pass for one of the wonders of the world. It is a strange but true life story of a 22-year lady, Chinyere Alegu, who dragged her cousin’s daughter, Chioma Edukwu, 5, to a nearby bush, inserted her fingers in her mouth and pulled out her tongue . The victim died as a result of the wicked act.

The incident took place at Ndi Duma Ekpaomaka village, in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
According to a source, the suspect allegedly committed the crime under the influence of some unseen forces.

He narrated how the suspect behaved strangely, each time the spirit came upon her. But despite that, Chinyere was said to have taken her Christian life seriously and even became a ‘prayer warrior.’
Crimewatch was also told that the suspect, who was described by many as a very quiet person, usually saw vision and received revelations ‘anytime she was in spirit’.

One day, she told her relatives how she dreamt and the spirit directed her to pull out an object from an elderly woman’s mouth. However, when she woke up from sleep, she traveled to her cousin’s village, Ishiekke Igbubuikwo and told him she wanted to train his daughter, Chioma. Monday Edukwu was said to have granted her request and asked Chioma to go with her.
Chinyere was said to have taken the little girl to her elder sister’s house at Ekpaomaka where they slept in the same room.

At about 1.30a.m., Chinyere claimed she was directed to go and pray for an elderly woman and to pull out an object from her mouth but she decided to go along with the victim.
But instead of going to the woman’s house as she claimed, she dragged the little girl to a bush, which was a kilometre away from her sister’s house, allegedly pushed her to the ground and started praying for her.
As the prayer was going on, she allegedly inserted her fingers in the girl’s mouth and pulled out her tongue. And when the suspect came back to her senses, she realised that it was Chioma, and not the elderly woman from whose mout.hhe ‘removed the object’ .

Realising the implication of what she did, she raised the alarm and beckoned on a hunter, that was passing by for assistance. Crimewatch gathered that the girl died before help could come her way.
The news of the incident spread like wildfire and attracted the villagers to the scene. They reported the matter at Ikwo Police Station while policemen went to the bush where they arrested Chinyere and recovered a copy of Holy Bible.
The suspect, who spoke to Crimewatch, said: “ I am a hair dresser by profession. I love to evangelise and attend churches and where they hold rallies and preach the gospel of Jesus Christ.

I was sleeping when the Holy Spirit instructed me to go and pull out an object from an elderly woman’s mouth. I dreamt again before I took Chioma to the bush for prayer and while there, I used my hands to remove her tongue.
“Having realised what I did, I raised the alarm and appealed to people to come and help me revive her. I used my right hand to remove her tongue. Sometimes, Holy Spirit visit me. I can pray in the house for three to four hours. I don’t know what to say but to beg my cousin to forgive me,” she lamented.

The deceased’s father told the reporter that he was surprised that Chinyere killed his daughter. “She came to me to request that my daughter stayed with her. Two days later, information got to us that Chioma, my first daughter, was found dead in the bush. I saw my daughter’s tongue on the ground and was later told that Chinyere removed it. I want law to take its course, I want justice to be done. I don’t know what came over her. I know her to be a Christian, a prayer warrior,” the grieving father said.

The Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adeola Adeniji, said the suspect had been arrested and would be tried for murder. He said: “We didn’t see any object on her apart from the Bible.”

Nairaland / General / Petrol Subsidy: Fg Sacks 98 Importers by eyezgal(f): 10:58am On Mar 01, 2012
Amid the ongoing investigation into the management of petrol subsidy, the Federal Government has removed 98 companies from the list of importers of the product into the country.

A total of 140 companies were discovered by the House of Representatives to have imported petrol in 2011, for which more than N1.7tn had been paid as subsidy claims.

The Federal Government’s action implies that only 42 companies will benefit from the N656bn provided in the 2012 budget for subsidy payment.

The spokesman of the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency, Dr. Wole Adamolekun, confirmed the removal of the fuel importers from the 2012 operations in an interview with our correspondent in Abuja.

He, however, said PPPRA had only 125 fuel importers on its list before the government’s action.

The House of Representatives’ Ad-hoc Committee on the Subsidy Regime led by Mr. Farouk Lawan, had discovered that 49 companies imported fuel in the first quarter of 2011, but the number dramatically increased to 140 at the end of the year.

“As far back as December 2011, we had on our own reduced the number of importers from 125 to 42,” Adamolekun, however, explained.

He said the new PPPRA management led by the Executive Secretary, Mr. Reginald Stanley, did so without any prompting from outside.

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, had recently hinted that the PPPRA and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources would trim the number of importers.

She had explained that the trimming was to ensure proper monitoring, as the administration of the subsidy regime would not continue the way it had been run.

Despite the reduction of the number of importers, Adamolekun said the only way to sanitise the oil industry was through the passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill into law by the National Assembly.

He decried the fact that many oil firms in the upstream sub-sector had refineries in other parts of the world, but had not considered it necessary to establish any in Nigeria.

The PPPRA, however, could neither oblige THE PUNCH’s request for the names of the 42 companies, nor disclose the criteria used to trim the number of importers.

However, it insisted that ownership of retail outlets and storage facilities were conditions that must be met before an importer could be granted a licence.

But the House of Representatives’ panel discovered that many firms did not meet this requirement.

Stanley had said during the demonstration that followed the withdrawal of subsidy by the Federal Government, “There will be a final appraisal of quarter four on the March 31, 2012 and companies that did not perform up to expectation will not only be sanctioned, but will be dropped in subsequent quarters.”

Autos / Senate Stops Frsc’s New Number Plates, Licences by eyezgal(f): 8:38am On Mar 01, 2012
The Senate has directed the Federal Road Safety Commission to suspend immediately the implementation of the new driving licence and vehicle number plates on the grounds that the innovation is creating further hardship for Nigerians.

It also mandated its Committee on Federal Character and Intergovernmental Affairs to conduct a public hearing on the new scheme, with a view to ascertaining its desirability or otherwise.

The resolutions were reached after members debated the motion on the new FRSC scheme brought by Senator Aweisu Kuta.

Moving the motion, Kuta said the Federal Road Safety Act empowered the commission to prevent and minimise accidents on the federal highways and not as a revenue generating agency for the government.

He argued that the commission was also given the mandate to clear obstruction on the highways and educate drivers, motorists and other members of the public on the proper use of the highways.

Kuta said, “The commission in recent times has embarked on frequent and arbitrary introduction and re-introduction of vehicle number plates and driver’s licenses.”

According to him, the commission is likely to generate about N2bn annually as its own share of the new scheme, following the increase in the cost of production of licences and number plates.

He said the scheme was generating a public outrage at the moment, given that Nigerians are generally financially incapable of meeting the requirements of the new scheme due to the harsh economic realities.

“Also the August 31, 2012 dateline issued by the commission for the enforcement of the new scheme is not feasible because the current demand for vehicle license surpasses supply and thereby forces applicants to wait for as long as three months after payment before receiving number plates.

“The scheme has encouraged the activities of touts and middlemen which has further heightened the increases,” Kuta said.

Senator Barnabas Gemade, argued that the move on the part of the FRSC was controversial as the VIO had taken the commission to court on the matter and the court had restrained the commission from going ahead on the matter.

Smart Adeyemi, who heads the Senate Committee on FCT, said, “It is clear that the FRSC has gone beyond its mandate. It is our responsibility to call this commission to order. They should work within the framework of the law. The cost of procuring the number plates is too high for the common man.”
