Crime / Four Killed, 50 Injured, 20 Vehicles Destroyed As Hoodlums Clash In Lagos by eyezgal(f): 10:07am On Feb 29, 2012
Hell was let loose in Ejigbo and Mafoluku areas of Lagos State yesterday, as street urchins popularly called ‘Area Boys’ unleashed violence.

In the melee, four persons were feared killed and over 50 people injured. About 20 vehicles were vandalized during the clash by the factional gangs, who were fighting over toll collection at a plank bridge linking Ajao Estate with Ejigbo area of the state.

Over100 houses were also raided by the hoodlums during the free-for-all as they cashed in on the crisis to rob residents of the areas.
Lagos has recorded an upsurge of gang clashes in recent times, which had claimed about 50 lives. Affected areas include Lagos Island, Palmgrove, Iyana Ipaja and Obalende.

Trouble started on Monday night when a member of a faction of the street urchins, who was collecting N10 toll from pedestrians crossing from Ajao Estate to Ejigbo, had a disagreement with an Igbo man simply identified as Chukwuma.
Chukwuma was said to have given the Area boy N1, 000 note and was asked to come back to collect his balance of N990.

He was, however denied of his balance on his return, a development that made him raise the alarm.
His alarm was said to have attracted members of other faction of the Area boys, who claimed that it was their right to collect the toll. In the process, they engaged the other faction in a serious argument.
But angered by the action of Chukwuma, a member of the faction that was owing him N990 hit him with an object, which made him to slump and died instantly.

It was at this point that the two factions engaged themselves in a serious fight that later led to the death of one of them simply identified as Jamiu. Many others were said to have been injured.
The faction that lost Jamiu later regrouped and stormed the Mafoluku area for a reprisal attack at the wee hour of yesterday.

However, members of the opposing gang were said to have anticipated the reprisal and engaged their attackers, which led to the loss of another three lives.
Residents said dangerous weapons like guns, machetes, broken bottles and cudgels were freely used by the hoodlums. At the end of the clash, 20 vehicles were vandalized with over 100 houses raided by the hoodlums.
As at Press time, many residents of the areas have fled their homes for fear of fresh attack.
Few residents, who spoke with Daily Sun on condition of anonymity, pleaded with the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Yakubu Alkali and Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) to come to their aid as they were not sure of what would happen next.

A resident, who simply identified himself as Kabiru, appealed to the state government to sack the hoodlums from the pedestrian bridge, saying they have made life miserable to the people of the two areas.
Kabiru, who claimed he received a machete cut for refusing to open the door of his house to the hoodlums, who were making house-to-house raid, wondered why the police did not respond on time during the attack.
Police spokesman in the state, Mr. Jaiyeoba Joseph, confirmed the incident, but said only one person was killed. He said the police were on top of the situation as the areas have been taken over, urging residents to remain calm as the situation is under control.

NYSC / Nysc Members Serve As Tea Girls And Boys At National Assembly by eyezgal(f): 2:21pm On Feb 27, 2012
Some Youth Corpers serving at the National Assembly have complained about the disgraceful way they are treated by members of the legislature.

Investigations by Punch News on Saturday revealed that most of the NYSC members were upset after discovering that serving at the National Assembly was neither rosy nor challenging, contrary to their expectations.

“Many of us here are attached to committees but there isn’t much to do. The committees hardly allow us to carry out any serious assignments; officials just treat us like errand boys.

“They seize the slightest opportunity to shout at us during committee assignments. It can get really embarrassing.” An angry male corper said, adding that members of committees had little regard for them.

Investigation also revealed that the National Assembly, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Central Bank of Nigeria and commercial banks topped the list of “lucrative and challenging” institutions corps members posted to Abuja prefer to serve in.

Another youth corper serving as an aide to a legislator said that the reason why some corp members want to serve at the National Assembly was because of the opportunity to work directly as aides to Senators or members of the House.

“The disappointment sets in when they find out that the place offers no more than serving in committees and departments already congested by civil servants on the payroll of the National Assembly.

“In the committees, they will be largely redundant except during meetings when they can serve tea, kola nuts or sweets,” the corper said.

It is almost a hopeless case for fresh graduates aspiring to work as legislative aides to senators or representatives because the lawmakers had given out such jobs to their relatives or friends.

But the National Assembly’s Director of Information and Publications, Mr. Monima Daminabo, dismissed the claim of maltreatment of corps members.

“The civil service is a disciplined and rule-guided system. Most of them came in largely untrained in the working of the parliament; so they need the assistance of superior officers to put them through. We have no tradition of discrimination in the National Assembly.

“Also, the authorities of the NYSC that posted them here have never reported to us that they received complaints from their corps members. So, if such cases exist, the authorities of the NYSC should know,” Mr. Daminabo said.

Crime / A Female Worker Killed By Machine Five Days After Employment: by eyezgal(f): 12:54pm On Feb 09, 2012
Barely five days after she was employed, Miss Happiness Okon, a machine operator at IMPCO Company Limited on Fatai Atere Road, Mushin, Lagos, has been killed by the firm’s plastic moulding machine.

The 21-year-old girl came to Lagos in the last quarter of 2011 to work to raise money to pursue her long time ambition of studying Theatre Arts at university.

But her ambition was cut short when on January 23, 2012, Okon went to work but never returned. She was allegedly killed by the company’s moulding machine.

Her death on the fateful day has led to a dispute between the family and the company.

The family insisted that the company was economical with the truth about the real cause of the girl’s death.

The girl’s uncle, Mr. Effiong Nyah, told Metro that there was no iota of truth in the company’s claim that the girl walked into a machine and died in the process.

He said the way the company concealed the death from members of the family and their failure to allow them to check the machine which allegedly killed Okon made them to believe the company was culpable.

Nyah said, “I received a call from one of my brothers that Happiness (Okon) was dead and that a machine killed her. When I got to the company, I was not allowed into the premises even when I told them I was the guardian of the girl.

“After some time, a person who identified himself as the Personnel Manager came and said the company was sorry for what happened. I then asked him to allow me to see her corpse at least, he shouted at me, ‘to see what; to see what? It was then I knew something was amiss. I kept silent.

“Not long, a man came and introduced himself as a policeman. He came along with a photographer. Still, they did not allow me to go in with them. After some time, the policeman came out with the photographer. He now asked me to come with them to the office. When we got there, he showed me an industrial machine and said it was the machine that killed Happiness (Okon).

“I was stunned as there was no blood stain on it. I turned the machine around, no sign that anything happened there. I became suspicious and asked them to start the machine to know how it operates since I am a machine operator myself but they refused.

“Reluctantly, they took me to a hospital where her corpse had been taken to. When we got there, I saw that her head was broken and the skull came out. I broke down in tears. As I was crying, I was called outside to sign some papers to enable them to take her corpse to the mortuary. I signed all the papers. After signing the documents, the policeman told me the company had agreed to take care of the burial expenses but that the police asked them to wait until they finished their investigation.”

Nyah said from the officials’ body language, he was convinced that the company had hand in the death of the girl.

He said another reason for his suspicion was that he learnt that many staff had died in similar circumstances in the past and the matter was usually covered up.

But IMPCO, through its lawyers, Abel O. Osuji & Associates, said the girl died, when out of curiousity, she opened a blow-moulding machine, entered into it and the machine suddenly closed upon her head and severely injured her.

The Managing Partner, Abel Osuji & Associates, Abel Osuji, said the late Okon was a casual worker (packer) not a machine operator or technician.

Osuji said when the incident occurred the inbuilt alarm of the machine alerted other members of staff.

He said when other workers came, they found the deceased barely breathing, with head injuries in a pool of blood.

Osuji said the workers immediately alerted senior members of staff and Okon was rushed to a nearby hospital in Papa Ajao but she was certified dead at the hospital.

The letter by the company’s lawyer to the family’s lawyer, a copy of which is made available to our correspondent, reads in part, “Our client is aware of the danger posed by the machines to persons, and the costly damage that would be caused to the machines themselves if operated by novices. It is therefore inconceivable that our client would have assigned your client to operate the machine; especially when our client has well trained, qualified and experienced machine operators and technicians in its employ.

“Obviously, it would not be of any profit for our client to allow any of its members of staff to be killed. The incident is considered a grave loss to the company, also considering its effect on the staff morale and the image of the company. In fact, the company closed its operations for a day to observe a day of mourning in her honour.

“Note that our client has nothing to hide in this matter and has been taking all steps required by law. Our client made an immediate report to the nearest police station as they are required to. It is up to the police to transfer the case to any station or department they deem appropriate.”

However, the lawyer to the family of the deceased, Mr. Silas Udoh, said the reasons given by the company that the late Okon roamed into the machine were untenable.

Udoh said the company was culpable for assigning her a duty of machine operator when she had not been trained for such.

He also said it was illogical to believe that a worker who was barely five days old in the company was the only one left to operate a machine of the magnitude without supervisors, wondering where other workers were when she was trapped by the machine as claimed.

Silas said, “Our position in law is that we are not satisfied with the company’s report. We are highly embarrassed by the IMPCO lawyer’s use of the word ‘casual worker.’ That is the reason the company should be more liable. When life is involved, such a language is not supposed to arise whatsoever because it is clear in the 1999 Constitution that everybody resident in Nigeria has a right to life.

“The constitution does not categorise that life belongs to the rich or permanent worker. We are calling on the relevant authorities – the police, the Attorney-General of Lagos State to investigate the case, more so when the lady is the first child of the family.”

He, therefore, demanded the immediate prosecution of all the people allegedly involved in Okon’s death.

He said his firm would be suing for N200m compensation for the family.

Silas wondered why such a serious issue should be reported at a police station in Mushin, which the company knew was not competent to handle a murder case.

NYSC / Fg To Post Nysc Members To Rural Areas Only From Next Year. by eyezgal(f): 9:18am On Feb 02, 2012
Alhaji Bolaji Abdullai, the Minister of Youth Development has directed that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) should post NYSC members to rural areas only from next year.

He also added that there should be no provision for redeployment.

The Minister revealed this at the budged defence session with the House of Reps committee on youth development saying that “Corpers would no longer be posted to banks and other organizations where they are always being rejected.”

He also proposed to the committee a N3 billion for Youth Empowerment Programme (YEP) in 2012 saying that the Youth Empowerment Programme (YEP) was designed to train 250,000 Nigerian youths in the first year with the capacity to enlarge the figure to one million by the end of 2013. According to him, the programme would be executed with the collaboration of the private sector adding that the pilot programme would begin with the selection of 1000 youths from each state of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory for training in different vocations.
