Jobs/Vacancies / Death By Half A Million Cuts — South Africans Kiss Dstv Goodbye by faaz24: 8:47am On Nov 16, 2023
MultiChoice lost nearly half a million DStv subscribers in South Africa in the past year, according to the company’s latest interim results (1H FY2023).

As of the end of September 2023, the pay-TV broadcaster’s 90-day active subscribers in its country of origin stood at 8.629 million.

This was 486,000 less than the 9.115 million it had at the same point in 2022.

MultiChoice attributed most of its subscriber losses to a decision that ended pricing promotions it launched in 2022 to provide financial relief to customers amid load-shedding hardships.

“While the group has supported its subscribers with similar campaigns during challenging periods like the Covid-19 lockdowns, we can only do so for limited periods of time,” MultiChoice said.

This resulted in 311,000 non-revenue generating customers on its temporary “Surprise and Delight” offers being removed from DStv’s 90-day active subscriber base. These subscribers accounted for 3% of the total 5% decline.

DStv’s 90-day active subscriber base includes all customers with an active package for up to 90 days before 30 September 2023.

The active customer base — including subscribers who had valid packages on 30 September 2023 — also declined by 382,000 customers. This number dropped from 8.204 million to 7.822 million.

The other major factor MultiChoice blamed for its subscriber decline was increased load-shedding.

Premium is no longer the biggest headache
MultiChoice said “more stable” trends in its mid and upper customer segments, and inflation-linked average price increases of around 4%, helped limit the decline in monthly average revenue per user (ARPU) to 2%.

DStv divides its subscriber base into three main categories:

Premium segment — Premium and Compact Plus packages
Mid-market segment — Compact and Commercial packages
Mass market segment — Family, Access, and EasyView packages
The Premium package has been in decline for several years.

Customers with this package are most likely to be able to afford and have access to uncapped broadband packages and video streaming services, which have become a major rival for traditional TV services.

Surprisingly, MultiChoice said it recorded a 5% increase in subscribers on this package. It is possible that this was a temporary boost driven by sign-ups for the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

However, the Premium segment, which also includes Compact Plus, saw an overall decline of 5%.

Due to MultiChoice rounding its subscriber numbers — it is unclear exactly how many subscribers were lost in this segment, as the number remained 1.3 million.

The mid-market segment experienced a significant drop, with subscribers in this category declining 14% from 2.7 million to 2.3 million.

The damage was less severe in the mass market, where DStv lost 1% of its subscribers.

The graphics below from MultiChoice’s results presentation compare DStv’s subscriber base trends in South Africa from its interim results for the 2022 financial year (H1 FY2022) to H1 FY2023.

In the Rest of Africa (RoA), MultiChoice increased its 90-day active subscriber base by 70,000. Overall, its RoA subscriber numbers remained at just over 13 million.

However, the subscriber base measured on 30 September 2023 across the Rest of Africa declined by 25,000 customers — dropping from 8.906 million to 8.881 million.

Overall, DStv subscribers across all markets dropped from 17.110 million to 16.703 million

You ate on every thread making very senseless comments against the country. All the parties adopted their briefs today and you want the court to give judgement immediately without taking their time to study the original judgement and all the appeals, cross appeal and motion for new evidence.

Can’t you haters of Nigeria just keep your irrational opinion to yourself and allow the system to work as designed. Their lordships have reserved judgement and rightly so. They will give judgement before Nov 16 and justice will be done.

Thanks for this...

They know that Justice will be rightly served, they are intentionally been hypocritical about the expected outcome.

And they began to troll their ancestors thinking they were trolling me.

I want to ask them a very simple question.

"ARSENAL FANS HOW MARKET?"

Any youth below 40 years supporting Arsenals should be arrested for attempting suicide.

I saw an Arsenals fan who is within the age range of 18-21years already having a bard-head at his young age.

SMH.

Crime / Kaduna Judge Orders Ex Players Head Shaved For Smiling In Court by faaz24: 7:22pm On Jan 19, 2021
Drama as judge orders head of former Barcelona player Haruna Babangida to be shaved for smiling in court

Danladi Nafarko
January 16, 2021

There was a mild drama at a Kaduna court on Thursday when a judge ordered the shaving of the head of Haruna Babangida, a Nigerian former professional footballer who played for many European clubs including FC Barcelona.

Dateline Nigeria reports that Babangida, popularly known as Daddy, is a younger brother to two former Nigerian internationals Tijani Babangida and Ibrahim Babangida.

He went to the court in Magajin Gari area of Kaduna where he had earlier filed a case that was due for hearing. He was also spotting his trademark hairstyle.

“Daddy was apparently returning from a football field as he was in his training vest and apparel.

“When the case was called, Daddy being a jovial fellow, started smiling. The judge probably mistook that for disrespect.

“So he first ordered the detention of the former player in a cell, but later decided a barber to shave his head and made him to pay for it,” a source said.

Attempts to reach the ex-Barcelona player proved unsuccessful, but sources close to him said he has vowed to seek redress.

The case has been adjourned to January 27.

Politics / Governor Wike Talks Tough On IPOB by faaz24: 12:35am On Oct 24, 2020
A STATE-WIDE BROADCAST REINFORCING THE PROSCRIPTION IPOB IN RIVERS STATE

BY

GOVERNOR NYESOM WIKE, CON, GSSRS, POS
23rd OCTOBER 2020.

My Dear Good People of Rivers State,

2. The Rivers State Government views with serious concern the unending destructive activities of the outlawed Indigenous Peoples Organization of Biafra (IPOB) in Rivers State.

3. Recall that the IPOB was classified as a terrorist organization by the Federal High Court and subsequently proscribed in September 2017 by the Federal Government.

4. However, despite its ban, the group has continued to operate in parts of the country, including Rivers State in furtherance of its alien political objectives.

5. Since its proscription, the group has carried out intermittent processions in parts of Rivers State, especially in Oyigbo and some notorious suburbs in Port Harcourt Local Government Areas.

6. More often than not, these illegal processions have become regular occasions for armed IPOB members to disturb the peace of the State by unleashing violence and destruction on lives and property at will.

7. The Rivers State Government had severally pleaded, warned and even advised IPOB and its members to discontinue its insurrectional actions in Rivers State to no avail.

8. Instead, we were all witnesses to yet, another orgy of violence and destruction inflicted by IPOB at Oyigbo Local Government Area and some parts of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area on Tuesday 21st October 2020.

9. This evil, wicked and audacious action resulted in the unnecessary loss of scores of lives, including soldiers and police officers, and the destruction of both public and private properties, including police stations, court buildings and business premises.

10. Not done, they also visited physical violence on members of some targeted community which, but, for the quick intervention of the State Government and the security agencies, would have resulted in some form of internecine bloodbath in the State.

11. Today, IPOB continued with its devilish and destructive activities at Rumukwurushi, Iriebe and Oyigbo in open defiance of the State Government’s curfew on human movements.

12. Security intelligence and surveillance have revealed that IPOB has continued to expand its membership drive, holding meetings regularly, and expanding its logistical base, including the maintenance of illegal detention cells in Emenike and other parts of Diobu, Port Harcourt.

13. As a matter of fact, Oyigbo town has practically become the group’s main operational base in Rivers State, from which they’ve become notorious for launching premeditated violence and terror on the State, businesses and innocent citizens.

14. As a people, we have become very much unsettled by the terrorist acts and endured the continuing irritations, violence, destruction and provocations of IPOB in and against the people of Rivers State.

15. We agree that Rivers State is part of Nigeria and has always been a home for all Nigerians and will continue to be because this is our true character.

16. But it must also be understood that Rivers State belongs to the indigenous people of Rivers State.

17. As a stranger element with strange political ideology therefore, IPOB has no legal or moral right to invade Rivers State or any part therefore at its behest; to disturb public peace; and subject lives and property to violence or threat of destruction under any guise.

18. What is clear from this behaviour is that our love, accommodation and hospitality towards all are being mistaken for weakness by the banned IPOB.

19. This being so, the time has come for us to sound this notice of warning that: enough is enough!!! We can no longer tolerate this IPOB evil monster in Rivers State. Never.

20. As a Government, we owe our people and all residents the responsibility to protect their lives, property and wellbeing and to prevent trouble-makers of all shades and character from violating our collective peace, security and pursuit of happiness.

21. Therefore, in view of the fact that IPOB has since been proscribed throughout Nigeria; and

22. Having come to the firm conclusion that the activities of the banned IPOB are not just dangerous to lives and property but also constitute clear and present threat to the existential interest and aspirations of Rivers State and all our people;

23. We have decided to reinforce, implement and enforce the existing judicial and national ban on IPOB by putting a total and complete stop to its presence and or activities in Rivers State or any part thereof.

24. Accordingly, as from today 23rd October 2020, the Rivers State Government has:

(ii) Outlawed IPOB from existing and or operating in Rivers State or any part thereof in line with the proscription order of the Federal Court and the Federal Government.
(ii) No form of procession and or agitation by IPOB or any of its affiliates is allowed to take place in Rivers State or any part thereof, hence forth.

(iii) Security agencies are hereby directed to stop any form of procession or agitation by IPOB in Rivers State or any part thereof and arrest and prosecute any person or group that identifies with the membership or activities of IPOB in the State;

](iv) Government will issue an executive order to strengthen and ensure the effective enforcement of these measures;

(v) I will be meeting with all leaders of youth groups and community development committees in the State on Monday 26th October 2020 to take wholistic measures to counter and stop all IPOB activities in Rivers State;

(vi) Mr. Stanley Mgbere is hereby declared wanted for leading members of the banned IPOB to cause the recent violence and destruction of lives and property in Oyigbo Local Government Area; and

(vii) A ransom of N50,000,000.00 will be given to any person with useful information that would lead to the arrest and prosecution of the said Mr. Stanley Mgbere.

25. I wish to appeal to the people of Oyigbo Local Government Area to remain calm and not to take the laws into their hands despite the intense provocation as government has the capacity to deal with the challenge and ensure the safety of lives and property in the Local Government Area.

26. We will soon carry out on the spot inspection and assessment of the destruction they have suffered and take appropriate measures to mitigate the loss and damage caused to lives and property.

27. We hereby express our hearty sympathies to the families of all those that have either lost their loved ones or suffered damages to their properties from the destructive acts of IPOB in our State.

28. Be assured that they have not died in vain and we will do everything within our powers to give all the victims justice.

29. We appeal to leaders of the various ethnic groups residents in the State to ensure that their members respect the sensibilities of our people and refrain from provocations and acts of hooliganism that could breach peace and security in the State.

30. Finally, I wish to assure all Nigerians that Rivers State will continue to be the home for all tribes as we will not shirk in our responsibility to ensure the peace, security and happiness of all residents in Rivers State.

31. We cannot allow IPOB miscreants and other misguided similar groups to threaten our collective peace, security and wellbeing under whatever guise.

32. Thank you and may God continue to bless Rivers State.

Aguero has another one today...

Aguero Involved in CarAccident En Route Man City Training

Sergio Aguero was involved in a car accident on the way to Manchester City training on Wednesday morning.

The Argentinian forward was en route to the Etihad Campus facility centre when he was involved in the crash.

Aguero walked away unscathed from the accident, though the striker's Range Rover was not so lucky as the car had severe damage to the front right wheel.

The forward did not require any medical treatment following the crash, which was deemed to be nothing serious ahead of this weekend's match against Crystal Palace.

Wednesday's incident isn't the first involving Aguero and automobile accidents, with the forward having previously been involved in another accident two years ago.

Aguero was a passenger in a taxi in Amsterdam at the time before the vehicle struck a pole, causing broken ribs for the Manchester City star.
