biina:

and some people dont know what it means to make a reasonable argument within context.
Going about dragging definitions of race does not change the context of the debate, and under that context (like you admitted), 'Igbo' is not a race!
In a different context, feel free to define yourself as race of your own. undecided

I never said that Igbo was not a race. I said that Igbo would be classified as an ethnic group (interchangeable with race) under US demographic classifications. I only sought to correct those people ( yourself included) who made a bold statement that Igbo was not a race "regardless of the intentions" as someone put it.

biina:

but asking people to check both boxes will only make them appear as semi illiterates who dont know the definition of 'race'.

biina:

and you must be the great scholar that thinks his/her family are a race of their own undecided

You did not know that Igbo was a race regardless of the context until today, why don't you admit ? I bet you wish you consulted google before your gaffe. The posts above show that context was not an issue with you when you made your statements.

I know you are quite energetic when it comes to making long post, even when you don't understand what you are talking about, but I am not going to be sucked into that. Bye Bye.

Richy, thanx for providing the dictionary definitions of race again but some people would rather die in ignorance than accept correction.

I couldn't have said that better. Like I said in the past, some people resort to google to argue about everything under the sun (from electricity to solar energy to making gari) even when they are talking rubbish, but the simple things in life elude their comprehension.
Politics / Re: Be Counted As Igbo In The U S 2010 Census Now On-going (deadline Is April 1) by FACE(m): 9:23am On Mar 19, 2010
All those saying that Igbo is not a race should get some education. The word "RACE" has various definitions including:

1.a group of persons related by common descent or heredity.
2.a population so related.
3.Anthropology.
a.any of the traditional divisions of humankind, the commonest being the Caucasian, Mongoloid, and Negro, characterized by supposedly distinctive and universal physical characteristics: no longer in technical use.
b.an arbitrary classification of modern humans, sometimes, esp. formerly, based on any or a combination of various physical characteristics, as skin color, facial form, or eye shape, and now frequently based on such genetic markers as blood groups.
c.a human population partially isolated reproductively from other populations, whose members share a greater degree of physical and genetic similarity with one another than with other humans.
4.a group of tribes or peoples forming an ethnic stock: the Slavic race.
5.any people united by common history, language, cultural traits, etc.: the Dutch race. (dictionary.com)

Igbo can't be classified as a race in US census but an ethnic minority, not because Igbo is not a race but because of the context in which "RACE" is used in US census.

Some of you fellas dash off to google to become experts in business, electricity, nuclear weapons, religion and everything under the sun but would not even know the simplest of things or consult google as usual because you think you know.

Ignorance is not really a problem but the refusal to learn, accept corrections and sticking to a position regardless of facts is simply pathetic.

asha 80, you are giving me too much credit.  When JTF is posted to a prticular region for example, he  makes publicized visits to the top politicians in the region, from governor to influencial local government officials. A cynic would say that during those visits, "I wash your back, you wash my back" kind of operations take place and that Jang did not wash someone's back appropriately.  The endemic corruption within the system is a major part of the problem - it is a very real problem.

At the root of these catfights is a bunch of naira.

By your reasoning, Governor Jang is the guilty and corrupt party because he did not hand state's money to Maina and Bali is silly for pointing out the ineptitude of the GOC while your Maina is whiter than snow.

Hmmm, O.K
Politics / Re: Gen Domkat Bali Speaks On GoC Jos by FACE(m): 5:46pm On Mar 14, 2010
Ndu-Chuks, I am disappointed that you think that relationship between Jang and Maina should determine the level of the later's commitment to his call of duty.

You even blamed Jang for not establishing a corrupt relationship with the GOC. However, I will cut you some slack on this occasion and assume that that was a light hearted attempt to joke about our egunje culture.

The relationship between them should be  professional at all times regardless of how they view each other and there should always be an open communication chanel between the governor of a state and all the security bodies in the state.

What hour should a court be opened up to? How many judgements have been passed in the dead of the night? You want to talk facts, then please answer my question. I believe that it was an unusual judgement; obtained so late for obvious reasons. If you are able to furnish me with the details of judgements that were delivered in the middle of the night, then I will accept your argument.

The onus is on you to provide evidence that he opened the court room in the middle of the night, sat on the judges chair and awarded himself an injunction.

You are missing the point, which is that he exercised his rights and took his grievance to that place that we are all advised to take our grievances to i.e court. The timing of his lawsuit was also his prerogative and was probably a well calculated tactics. You can not take those away from him.

Your grievances should be towards the judge who granted the injunction, Babangida who annulled the election, Shonekan who readily accepted to be President and CIC armed forces who was power drunk himself or indecisive and failed to release the results, Kingigbe his running mate who accepted to serve in the folowing administration.

I also hate military governments and do not want to see them 200 miles of Aso Rock, but if I want to blame someone for a crime, I would readily have facts to back me up.

Look at my previous posts and you will understand that I don't do merry go round arguements and as such I am out of this one unless you can prove that it is illegal to go to court to present your case.

Katsumoto:

Please what was that democratic right? Also, why get judgement in the middle of the night? Stop trying to be clever. I guess we have to agree to disagree.

Sorry I limited his rights to voice his opinion to democracy. Let me rephrase that :

His has inalienable rightsto speak his mind as long as he does not defame others, incite hatred or endanger lives. If he went to court in the middle of the night and obtained an injunction, it means that the court was open for business in the middle of the night and you can't blame him for that.

Everyone, except you understands that the court is the right place to take your grievances to and he did just that, so how can you hate him for that and not hate the preciding judge or Babangida or Shonekun or Kingigbe ?

Your anger is misguided and without any reasonable foundation. I may not approve of someone, but I can't take away his fundamental rights from him. When I hate on him, I would have a reason to do so without sentiments. If I were you, I would argue with facts and not sentiments.

I am well aware of his pre-june 12 infamy; he just took it to another level. smiley

He had the right to call for the annulment of that election. Everyone has a right to voice their opinion as long as it does not include defamation of another, incitement of hate and goading others to kill.

He did not annul the election, he went to court and the court granted his plea. Babangida annulled the election and Nzeribe smiled with satisfaction period.

Babangida is the man you want to hold responsible for June 12. You also have to blame those that accepted positions in the "step aside government" for conniving to scuttle democracy and not a man who exercised his democratic rights and went to court and did not bear arms against a democratically elected government, anything else is misguided.

Eziachi, My point is very simple, you can not call other people traitors (I don't mean you specifically) and then lionise the likes of 'maverick arthur' - who sold arms to the FG knowing it was to be used to kill his kith and kin.

Did he really sell arms to Nigeria during the war or is that another urban myth ? I don't argue about what I do not know but I always seek to know in the event that I do not know. Yes, if he sold to Nigeria, it was very immoral eventhough legitimate.

Dede Eziachi, you have so much wisdom. Do you know if he sold weapons to Nigeria during the war ?

I knew he was heavily involved with Angola and Congo and I know that he was stupendously wealthy when he first campaigned in 1983. He had helicopters and private jets then. His private jets were seized by the FG for a short period after the coup.

Military leadership is a type of leadership and he has the rights to call for it if he desires that type of leadership, but it is up to the rest of us to shoot him down on that and continue to demand for true democracy.
Politics / Re: Nzeribe At It Again; Calls On Military To Take Over! by FACE(m): 11:40pm On Mar 11, 2010
The military have had billions of years to rule and make things good for the common man and they blew their chances, so how are they going to be different next time around ? No way !

However, we cannot continue as we are at the moment. The govt needs to be overhauled but who will bell the cat ? Not the senators or the house of rep members, so who then ?

Regional government is the answer, but how do we achieve that ? Sovereign national conference is the peaceful way, but outright revolution and militancy will suffice.

It is unacceptable that we have so many lawmakers and such a large government with nearly $1 billion per annum going in way of wages and allowances i.e legal expenditure, add all the corner-corner money and you wonder why we can never move forward.

If it was upto me, the lawmakers would be trimmed to  just  2 or a maximum of 3 from each state or 12 from each region.  The state assembly redused to a maximum of 9 representatives. No local governement chairmen, but lower statehouse comprising  a maximum of 3 members from each local goverment. The function of the lower state house members would be to present their local issues to the house for debate/approval, but they would have the full right to vote on any issue in the state house.

It is absolutely outrageous that we have to foot the bill of loafers!

Regarding Nzeribe, a man has the rights to sell arms to anyone he choses to if that is his line of business. However, a man should also be bound by good ethics in business. If he sold weapons to Nigeria during the war, then he has more guilt  than the Russians and the Brits and the Egyptians because his own kith and kins were at the receiving end of his business and such a man deserves to be paid in bad coins.

No. it shows that the average Nigerian cannot see beyond the bridge of his nose.
Our diversity is not our problem, but that we focus and amplify our differences, instead of consolidating the things we have in common, and using our variation to complement each other.
This is difficult when each feels he is the goose laying the golden egg, and that he would be better off on his own.
One should look at the Europeans and their bid to come together to present a common front competing against the US and the asian heavy weights. Yet, here we are in Nigeria, Africa, and the black race, still self perpetuating divide and rule mentality.

Quite rich coming from someone who delights in bigotory. A little introspection may be useful here, but then your holier than thou attitude may prevent any form of introspection.

"Even though your kinsman executed our leaders, he is still our hero. As for thee his kinsmen, womenfolks and sibblings, we shall blame his actions on you and kill you in your thousands."

My take: the offender cannot be a hero while the innocent brother  at home is regarded as the villain.

If he was your hero, why did you embark on killing those that you thought were related to him ?

You have finally confessed. You embarked on your progrom out of envy and the Nzeogwu coup was only an excuse for you to let blood. The same false provocation was used as an excuse in modern day Nigeria when the same envy drove you to kill again because of a cartoon in far away Denmark.

Yes, Chukwuma Nzeogwu is not Igbo and he is your hero when it suits you. He is also an Igbo representing an Igbo agenda when it suits you.

Make up your mind. Was he Igbo or not ? If you say that he was Igbo, is he still your hero ? If he is still your hero for his actions on Jan 15 1966, which you regard as good and heroic deeds, can you now explain why you continue to justify the killing of innocent easterners based on the good deeds of your hero ?

hahaha. . . my friend, dont lie to us. . . so it is only in August 2009 that you noticed you had lost money after 18 solid months of bull run under Soludo. . . this is the funniest sh@t I've heard this month.

What was the marketcap of the NSE All share Index in 2006 and what was the market cap in April 2009.

I will tell you. . . April 2009 was lower than Jan 2006.

Should we laud "boom and bust" policies if they only bring us back to where we originally started?

Did you mean a Bear (negative) run ?  Mid 2008 - April 2009 was a calamity for the stock market worldwide, so if there was a bear market in NSE during that period, it was only a reflection of the global picture.

Most, if not all markets in the world are still below their April 2006 level talkless of the peak in 2007, so it not perculiar to NSE. By the way the stock market has other components in addition to the banking sector and the downturn was general, eventhough it was triggered by the banks.

I posit that those loans were handed out for economically-useless activities such as procurement of Government contracts (which will be carried out anyway, whether or not those loans are given) rather than real industry.

Financing government contracts with bank loans is not useless to the economy. Infact, that's the way it should be. Major contracts that have effect on the economy should have a solid backing from a solid bank or consortium of banks.

Government contracts are massive all over the world and Nigeria in particular since most things in Nigeria are run by the government. Now that brings another issue to the fore. A lot of banks are owed a lot of bad money because government refused to pay a lot of their contractors for contracts awarded and executed.

(2.) During Soludo's tenure, the rate of growth of manufacturing in Nigeria continued to fall year on year, despite the so-called confidence and loans given out by the banks.

Everyone knows that the continuous decline of the manufaturing sector is as a result of the inability to compete with the imported goods as a result of the following culprits:

1. No reliable power supply
2. No cheap transportation caused by bad roads and fuel scarcity
3. Lack of security
4. Lack of reliable water supply.

So, I really think you are hitting below the belt when you insinuate that Soludo was to blame in any way for the decline in the manufaturing sector, unless I misunderstood your point.

At topic, Sanusi is now calling the shots and he has his supporters and the opposition alike. Even though I prefer bullish financial managers to conservative ones, I would give him the chance to chart the course he wants to follow and to show which direction he is heading to. I am yet to have a strong opinion as to where he is heading and how he plans to get there, but one thing I am sure of is that disparaging Soludo won't take us any where.

What role did the Yoruba's played in the civil war?Obasanjo as the last commander of the Nigerian forces, lead the largest and final attack on the Biafran Army.Thousands of lives were lost .The same OBJ contested for 1999 elections and won with huge votes in all eastern states while he lost in his ward, village, contituency and state.

I think the biafrans cant read within the line.Yorubas love and accommodate everybody.Biafras problem is BIAFRA itself.

So what ? You want to tell easterners who to vote for or what ?

In 1999 PDP lost in all SW states.OBJ got majority vote in East and North.Because of that ineptitude,Nigeria is today 10 years backwards.

You must be living in a fool's paradise.Awolowo(like  many politicians of his era )did nothing to worsen Biafra's case.
Can you please tell me anything Awolowo did against you fools.

And what did the AD state governors achieve after their victory ? PDP was simply the better and more inclusive party than the AD in 1999 . There is no evidence to suggest that Olu Falae would have been better than Obj if he had won. He lost fair and square.

Nobody owes you any explanation or apology for voting PDP in 1999 by the way.

Onlytruth, OBJ won fair and square in the east. Those that feel agrieved that Olu Falae lost in the east should go jump into a lake.

my dozie:

i think Gowon is truly sorry 4 his past and should be 4given.What i look at is the state of mind of one.Gowon has been a very good man i must say but in those days he truly had bad advisers who misguided him in his numerous decisions. But ordinarily,he's a kind-hearted man like Shehu Shagari and should be 4given.

I have a similar opinion as well.  Some people installed Gowon  in the first place and I think that his hands were somehow tied, but I believe that the civil war would have been averted if he had stopped the killing of innocent civilians from the east, following the the counter coup and the cleansing in the armed forces.

At a time when northern civilians in the east were given military escort back to the north, the easterners were ambushed and killed even on their way home.

The war itself was mass-killing-sanctioned.

My mum escaped death on two occasions. The technique of Nigerian pilots were to bomb and strafe every occupied area regardless of whether they were occupied by civilians or not.

On the first occasion, a bomb was dropped in our compound in Umuahia but it failed to detonate by God's grace. The Biafran forces were called to remove the unexploded bomb.

On the second occasion, she was at the market when the strafing started. She hid behind a huge oji (iroko) which took some of the machinegun bullets and shrapnels from the bomb. Many died that day.

My dad was on admission in Aba General Hospital when it was bombed. Many people died that day as well.

After the war, many northern soldiers left with human trophies. Yes, they forcefully took some people as "WOW", wives of war.

Although Gowon was in charge of the war that oversaw the mass murder of innocent people, I believe that Rwanda would have been like a tea party if  Murtala Muhammed or Awolowo was the Head of State.

Even when Gowon declared "No victor, No vanquished" Awolowo launched an economic offensive when he seized Igbo money in the bank and gave them no more than £20 regardless of how much they had in the banks.

I will advise my Igbo brethren to forgive Gowon as he has apologised in his own way.

As for Ojukwu refusing £600,000 in aid from Britain, I stand shoulder to shoulder with him on that. If Britain meant well, they should have stopped supplying arms to Nigeria.

Again, I do not blame Britain for having an ally in Nigeria at that time, but to turn around and offer food to victims of their alliance was disgraceful. Ojukwu's message was simple, "you can't be my friend and foe at the same time" No need for crocodile sympathy.

To all those that gloat, you may have won the war but you sure did not win the battle. Our bouncebackability will continue to astound you. Our braveness; dishearten you. Our success; your envy.

Many years after total destruction, we have self-helped and rebuilt. Nearly all our villages are electrified through self-help and they receive electricity when Nepa gives it. Yes, that is why we troop to the east en masse during xmas to help develop our villages.

When they tried to keep us down by classifying us as educationally advantaged, we built the first two state universities to cater for our needs. Like hydra, we grew other heads where one head was chopped.

We need no apology from anyone. You fought for what you believed in and employed the tactics you felt were good for you and we defended our own. What we don't need is barefaced lies.

As for me, Biafra was well worth it and the loss was minimal compared to what would have happened to former Biafrans if they did not stand to fight.

No regrets there, the battle was well fought and we did not lose in shame.

To our fallen heroes from Umuahia, Enugu, Calabar, Port-Harcourt, Ikot Ekpene, Owerri, Yenagoa, Onitsha (Former eastern region), may your souls rest in peace.
