Business / Business Lessons Nigerians Can Learn From Late Ikea Founder, Ingvar Kamprad by Fashionlover: 4:38am On Jan 31, 2018
http://www.bossheights.com/2018/01/business-lessons-young-nigerian.html

When news broke that the founder of furniture company, Ikea, Ingvar Kamprad had died, many people remembered him for not just changing the face of the furniture business in Europe, he was also one of the richest and most successful businessmen on the continent.

Reading through his life I learnt some things that were instrumental to the success of his business, that can still be replicated by Nigerians, Africans and businessmen around the world.

1) You can start Small

By small, I mean starting at a young age and starting with very little capital. According to his story, he started when he was very little. Reports have it that
he actually started at age 5. He sold matchboxes ( what we call matches in Nigeria) to neighbours.
His capital was very little; I'm guessing he started with savings from his piggy bank. Parents should realize it is ok to encourage their kids to develop their entrepreneurial drive early.

2)Give the best quality at the cheapest rate

Even at a young age, he knew profit meant a lot to the survival of a business and the price of the product determined that. It wasn't enough for him to sell matchboxes to neighbours.

His first clients were probably neighbors who wanted to buy from the lil kid next door (who wouldn't want to help a lil kid?). But he knew if he wanted to retain them as customers and get new ones, he had to match the competition's price point.
To crush the competition, he had to sell at a cheaper rate, hence his journey to Stockholm, where he is said to have bought the matchboxes in bulk and sold them at a cheaper rate than most of his competitors, to customers.

3)There is money in the "Necessity Goods Market"
I have noticed that most businesses set up by Nigerian millennials target the luxury market. They figure there is alot of money to be made at a swoop with a sale. But the truth is that, you may make a alot with a sale, but when will your next sale be? Is that business sustainable?
The biggest market in Africa (and indeed the world) is the necessity goods market. Through out his life,Ingvar Kamprad offered affordable products for sale and he made alot of money from it.
He ended up being one of the richest men in Europe.

4)Outgrow and Diversify.......

From selling matchboxes, he expanded his business to sell office stationary, which grew and expanded into Ikea. While he was selling his products, he still looked for new terrains to make money. His starting small with the sale of the matchboxes, didn't mean he would remain there. He was able to expand and diversify into other things.

5) Be Innovative

He is said to have founded the Ikea company in 1950, buying furniture from local artisans and marketing it to families.

It is not until 1956, when he started the assembling, and deassembling, minimalist design, that he became a household name and started making money.

Reports have it that, when an employee was trying to load a piece of furniture (I think a chair) and he couldn't, he suggested they remove the legs, so it could enter the vehicle easily. That is when the idea of flat back designs popped to him. It is said that this new design and their price point, appealed to the emerging middle class market in Europe at the time.
He also took advantage of snag, most furniture companies in Europe then, took time with their deliveries. He made his deliveries fast and easy to his clients.

6)Stay in Trend

Ikea may be an old brand, but it has stayed true to their core, minimalist design, but not without a modern and sometimes youthful touch. It's designs are simple, modern but with that youthful vibe.

It not only stayed in trend aesthetically, it also stayed in trend technologically. They took advantage of social media app, Instagram, to reach out to a new target market; the upwardly mobile, youthful demographic. Another core market they parleyed with were beauty gurus and vloggers. I actually got to know about them last year (or last two years, can't really remember) when I was admiring the setting of a beauty vlogger.

7)Be Frugal

It is said that Mr Invgar wore clothes from thrift stores, drove an ageing Volvo, flew coach, stayed in affordable hotels and regularly used his supermarket loyalty card. He famously admitted to living the frugal life on live TV in 2016.....
If you look at me, I think I do not wear anything that was not bought at a flea market, I want to show a good example.
Obsessive much, some people might say, especially considering the fact that he was worth billions of Dollars while he was alive, but I'm sure being frugal is a trait that he developed early, which led to the survival of his business.

The "wise old woman" always told me that if you ate up all your profit in business, you are eating up your business on the long run. It is not just enough starting a new business. You have to be frugal with your spending habits.

The first few years should see you ploughing back most of your profit into the business so it won't die. It is true that in Nigeria, perception is everything when conducting business, but what is the point looking rich at the expense of the survival of your business?

Business / World Bank And FG To Provide Stable And Affordable Electricity To Nigerians by Fashionlover: 8:55pm On Jan 12, 2018
The Rocky Mountain Institute may have cracked the problem with their partners, the Nigerian Rural Electrification Agency and the World Bank.

At a recent summit in Nigeria, the organisations released an independent investment brief that touts Nigeria as the nation which can now unlock the nascent mini-grid market in Africa in 2018. Nigeria is the biggest and most attractive off-grid opportunity in Africa. It has the largest economy in Sub-Saharan Africa (GDP of $405 billion), a population of 180 million people, and flourishing growth (15 per cent a year since 2000).

A significant amount of the economy is already powered largely by small-scale generators (10–15 GW) and almost 50 per cent of the population have limited or no access to the grid. As a result, Nigerians and their businesses spend almost $14 billion annually on inefficient, polluting and noisy generation that is expensive, and suffers from poor quality.

Developing off-grid alternatives to complement the grid could create a $9.2B/year market opportunity for mini-grids and solar home systems that will save $4.4B/year for Nigerian homes and businesses. And there is large potential for scaling - installing 10,000 mini-grids of 100 kW each can occur for 10 years and only meet 30 per cent of anticipated demand.

The combination of large revenue opportunity (USD $9.2 billion per year), a supportive government, and a dynamic entrepreneurial environment unite to make Nigeria the ideal location. If you are an impact investor that wants to make a difference in energy access next year, I’d suggest a trip to Nigeria.

Business / Your Customer Is King; Negative Effects Of Bad Customer Service by Fashionlover: 6:02am On Jan 10, 2018
The Internet was on fire a few days back when OAP and vlogger, Toke Makinwa revealed she was treated shabbily at a restaurant in Lagos.

The summary of what happened according to her is that she was treated shabbily because a fellow diner, obviously with more clout than her, asked that she should not be attended to.

Her story reminded me of what happened when I visited a saloon some years back.

They were attending to me. We agreed on a style and they had started doing the cornrows for the weave and in enters a lady. I noticed

immediately she entered, my hair dresser left my hair, without any explanation.

I wasn't happy with this behaviour, but i excused it, thinking they wanted to go through some things real quick with her.

I waited patiently for about 20 minutes and she still did not get back to me. At that point I protested. I protested because I noticed they had started doing the woman's hair, leaving me in the process.

The hair dresser said she was coming, she wanted to quickly do "her madam's hair" that I should wait.

Oh!! The woman owned the place? I thought to myself, "the woman should have opened the place for herself then and not for the public".

At this point, I was angry. I got up to leave. The girl at this point was confused. She ran to my meet me outside as I got into my car, apologising.

But it was too late. I drove with my untidy hair (they had not finished with the cornrows. Any woman knows this look is very embarrassing) and vowed never to step foot there.

Oh!! Did I add that it was my first time there? Did I also tell you that the saloon owner ignored me the whole time?Yes she did.

Nigerian companies and companies around the world should take customer service seriously.

To me, next to finance, it is the backbone of any company.

If this is a segment of your business you haven't taken seriously all along, believing because Simbi knelt down to greet you when you conducted question and answer session with her interviewed her, then she would be courteous to your customers, then you are in denial.

The following effects are reason enough for you to conduct periodic training on how to handle customers for your staff and even you, the business owner.

Bad Customer Service Leads to Bad Reviews

Word of mouth is the best type of advertising money can not buy. It is even better than paid adverts on the long run. Bad customer service usually leads to low patronage due to bad reviews.

Toke Makinwa told her story and most people were unhappy with the way she was treated. Most revealed they won't be spending their money there.

In my own case, I not only vowed not to ever step there, when I got home, they saw my hair and I told my family the story, they all vowed not to go to the saloon.

When a friend that relocated asked for a good saloon, I suggested some. When she specifically asked about that one(the saloon was pretty popular as it was exclusive and upscale), I told her what happened to me. She looked me dead in the eye and told me "I would have caused small wahala before leaving" .

I had a bad review to give, she has a bad review in turn to give when asked about the place and just like that, the bad review travels.

Bad Customer Service is Often a Reflection of Attitude the Owner to Customers

When your staff treats customers shabbily, it reflects on the personality of the owner. People will leave your place with the belief that the staff had the guts to misbehave because "Oga" behaves like that so they can't get fired. This behaviour is prevalent among sole proprietor businesses aka "One man business".

Great Customer Service grows your customer base

When you have great customer service, you not only retain existing customers, you also get new customers to become loyal to your brand.

They will defend your brand. If you have any slight issue with service delivery or sales, they will be willing to let it go or even help out (depending on the relationship you have built with them).

Your Business is not too "Fly" for Your Customers

I have noticed, most businesses in Nigeria profile their customers. Let me explain.

If two people enter a place for business, there is the likelihood that they would attend to the seemingly richer one first. They would even be more courteous to the person.

I wonder why this happens because they would both pay the same amount. Even though the other party can't afford the service, politely offer a lesser option if available. If you feel the customer is being unreasonable with demands, handle the situation politely.

Experience has shown that the customer who you feel can not afford a service, ends up disappointing you by making purchases and usually ends up becoming a faithful customer. He would never forget how he/she was treated like royalty.

Bad Customer Service Often Leads to Shut Down of Businesses

With bad customer service comes bad reputation via negative reviews. Negative reviews leads to loss of customers. Loss of customers leads to low patronage. Low Patronage leads to the ultimate death and invariably shut down of the business.

Did I also add in my lil gist that the saloon closed down a few years later? I can't say I am shocked though.

In conclusion, even though you spend a whole lot of money on adverts, if you have a reputation for treating your customers shabbily, your business will most likely shut down after a while.

I'm going to leave you with one of my favourite quotes .......

"It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you'll do things differently."

Business / Jumia 2017 Black Friday Is A Scam!!!! They Scammed Me ....don't Be A Mugu by Fashionlover: 8:32pm On Nov 22, 2017
Hey guys. I'm sure you have all heard about Jumia's black friday and how they are doing "massive sales" on their products (massive sales ni, massive sales kor. That one is gist for another day).

Well let me share my story. I placed an order for a television set on the very first day of their black Friday promo. As a matter of fact, I placed the order in the very early hours of that day.....around 1 and 2 in the morning.

I got a mail confirming my order. There were 2 items in the order. They canceled one of the items. This raised a red flag. I called and they apologised that they ran out of stock on the item.
My initial reaction in my head was how come the order went through if it was actually out of stock. They apologized. I asked if they would cancel the other item in the cart as I have not received any update on that one. They told me no.

I called their customer care line on Monday this week and I was assured they were on it that the item is on it's way.

I called this morning and I was told the same thing. I even noticed some disparity in the figures which I sorted out with the customer care rep.

So you can imagine my shock when I got both a text and an email that my order for the item; a television set had been canceled because it was out of stock. As at Monday this week, the item was still in stock, so how could this be?

This would never happen in a sane society but nah naija, so they feel anything goes. It is not enough spending millions on campaigns. Treat your customers with RESPECT.

And did I add that they initially gave free delivery on orders above N15,000 but it did not reflect. When people complained, they stylishly removed it from their website. I guess I would have known from the start. This is what I call "corporate 419".

If you want to buy anything from them, do it at your own risk or atleast, use the pay on delivery option so you won't hear stories that touch about your money.
