The Ministry of interior has disclosed that at least 159 Nigerians renounced their citizenships in 2022 alone.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Shuaib Belgore, disclosed this at an event Abuja, on Thursday, January 26, 2023.
According to Belgore, 150 Nigerians renounced their citizenship between 2006 to 2021.
“We spoke earlier about those who are conferred with Nigeria citizenship by Mr President. In November last year, we had a total number of 286 new Nigerians, out of which 208 were by naturalisation while 78 were by registration, meaning spouses of Nigerian citizens who now have become Nigerians.

Parents of slain 4 Aliyu UNIPORT students ask Linda Ikeji to suspend premiere of ‘Dark October’

Aggrieved parents of the four students of the University of Port Harcourt, who were killed by a mob in the Aluu Community in 2012 have asked the popular blogger, Linda Ikeji and Netflix, to suspend the planned premiere of their movie, Dark October.
The movie centres on the murder of the students codenamed Aluu-4 in October 2012.
In a statement issued on Wednesday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, by Livingstone Wechie, the Executive Director of a human rights group, The Integrity Friends for Truth and Peace The initiative (TIFPI), the families of the slain students said they were consulted before the shooting of the movie which has been scheduled for premiere on February 3.

Just In: US government announces visa bans on some Nigerians
The United States government has announced visa restrictions on some Nigerians accused of undermining democracy, noting that this was part of the action to advance democracy and tackle corruption in Nigeria.
The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, January 25, 2023.
According to him, t the sanctioned individuals, whose name he did not reveal, would be ineligible for US visas.
The top-ranking diplomat also explained that some family members of those barred from the US may also be subjected to the same restriction.
He stated, ”We are committed to supporting and advancing democracy in Nigeria and around the world. Today, I am announcing visa restrictions on specific individuals in Nigeria for undermining the democratic process in a recent Nigerian election.

Pope Francis in a new interview criticized laws that criminalize homosexuality as “unjust,” saying God loves all his children just as they are and called on Catholic bishops who support the laws to welcome LGBTQ people into the church.
“Being homosexual isn’t a crime,” Father Francis Said during an interview.
Francis acknowledged that Catholic bishops in some parts of the world support laws that criminalize homosexuality or discriminate against the LGBTQ community, and he himself referred to the issue in terms of “sin.” But he attributed such attitudes to cultural backgrounds, and said bishops in particular need to undergo a process of change to recognize the dignity of everyone.
“These bishops have to have a process of conversion,” he said, adding that they should apply “tenderness, please, as God has for each one of us.”

The Bingham University in Nasarawa State in Nigeria has banned students from using smartphones.
This was disclosed in an Internal Memorandum released by the Registrar of the school, Dr Esther Dyaji.
“Following repeated abuse in the use of smartphones in contravention of section 5.14 subsection i, ii and iii of the students handbook, the use of smartphone is hereby prohibited with immediate effect. Violators of this would have their phones confiscated and face appropriate sanction,” the memo read.
A viral video recently captured a student of the school assaulting a fellow student.
In the video, the victim said to be a fresh student was being flogged with a whip by an older student.
The victim’s cousin, Jemima Nnadi, also a fresh student in the school, who shared the video, alleged that such inhuman treatment was being meted out to fresh students like them in the university.
