As much as Fola practically heard his heart shatter beneath
his skin after the phone call, he felt a huge weight lift off
him. He threw his Samsung Galaxy Note 4 on the couch as
he threw his head back trying so hard to blank out the
beautiful memories he had with her. Khadijah, he had loved
her like he’d never loved any other woman. Their bond had
been beautiful and unspeakably amazing before things went
to the wire. It had all been sudden and it’d been a
nightmare for him. He broke up with her…cos he felt he had
to, he knew he had to. He smiled a pained smile as he
drifted his thoughts further back thinking about all he’d
been through. Maybe he was meant to be alone, he thought.
A self-made man with one of the best fashion outfits in the
country, good looks that ranked him as one of the most
good-looking bachelors under thirty and a more-than-
amiable personality, he just didn’t have that stroke of luck
with that part of him…which happens to be his most
important aspect of his life. He smiled as he picked up a
magazine he was going through earlier, his face staring up
at him from the magazine. He had been earmarked as one
of the speakers at an International Conference in Dubai. He
silently hoped he gets into the right frame of mind before
then. His phone rang and snapped him out of his daydream.
He smiled as he saw the caller ID…just who he would have
wanted to talk to at this moment
“Yarinya” he said as he picked the call
“How you dey?” His childhood friend Fatima replied. She
was the only woman he spoke in pidgin to.
“I dey oo” Fola replied “this one that you remembered me
today”
“See who’s talking” Fatty said “you forgot your niggress
now…how have you been?”
“Been good…very good” Fola said slowly
“Out with it…what’s up” Fatty asked…she sure could read
him perfectly
“I’m all alone…again” he replied trying to be nonchalant
about it
“No Fola…I thought we talked about this Haba” Fatty said
feeling bad for him
“Yeah we did” Fola said laughing “I just had to”
Fatty sighed “where are you?” She asked
“I’m home oo…are you in town?” Fola asked
“Yeah I am…when you’ll not check on me…” Fatty replied
still sounding hurt “I’ll check you up in a bit”
“I really could do with company” Fola said “don’t come
empty-handed though”
“Agbaya” Fatty laughed “see you soon”
“Alright dear” he replied and the line went dead. Why can’t
all women just be like Fatty, he thought and smiled. Well, if
they’d dated, it definitely would have gone the same way,
he thought. He stood up and dragged himself to the kitchen
to see what he could mix up for his guest

“But I really am thinking about adoption Fatty” Fola said as
he sipped on a glass of juice
“Shut up…how many crazy experiences have you even had
that you’re giving up already” Fatty laughed trying to cheer
him up
“You don’t want me to start counting” Fola laughed “I’m
just tired you know, plus I don’t want another woman to
suffer for what she knows nothing about”
“So you’ve lost your humanity huh?” Fatty said mockingly
“Naaa I can’t do that…but over time, experiences just make
you build a heart of steel” Fola said
“I know actually but knowing you for as long as I’ve known
you, you’ll find someone” Fatty said
“That’s where the problem is…I don’t want anybody, some
of us are sent to the world as philanthropists you know,
adopt a couple of kids, make their lives better and live a
healthy, fulfilled life” Fola said
“Now I see that KD has taken a large chunk of your brain
with her…but permit me to say, screw that girl mehn” Fatty
said
“Haba” Fola laughed
“Her loss I must say” Fatty said
“She’s still a good person you know” Fola said
“Maybe that is your problem Fola, its a good thing but it
could also be your achilles heel” Fatty said
“What’s that?” Fola asked
“Always wanting to see the good in people…I’m pretty sure
she dropped so many hints along the way that you CHOSE
to ignore” Fatty said
“Well, I don’t see that as a bad quality though…but let’s just
let her gist slide please, we made really beautiful memories
but well, it just happened” Fola said with a smile that
looked sad and charming at the same time “so how’s your
fiance, haven’t you guys picked a date?”
“Still on the matter oo…even if I’m sure you’re asking
because of wedding outfits you want to take care of” Fatty
said arching her eyebrow
“Haba you’re just something else…l want to see my
sweetpea get hooked to the man she loves” Fola said
“And I’m gon see you get hooked to the woman who
deserves you” Fatty said sweetly
“Your optimism’s a good thing…let it keep your heart warm”
Fola said
“And I’ll poke your nose and say “I told you so”” Fatty said
“Why did we never date?” Fola asked laughing
“Cos our parents deceived us into believing we were
siblings” Fatty laughed “and you actually deserve someone
less crazy”
“It turned out to be a good thing though” Fola said “I love
you dear”
“I love you wayyyy more Fola…and yes, the special
someone’s waiting” Fatty smiled
“But I’m not” Fola replied
“Just shut up and believe” Fatima replied and as he had
expected, he felt a lot better
