Politics / 'why I Came To Nigeria To Steal" - Ghanian Citizen Makes Shocking Confession! by Fetnet: 8:23pm On Nov 14, 2014 |
A Ghanian citizen resident in Nigeria, Israel Nana has confessed that his mission to Nigeria was to dispose people of their valuable properties and become rich before going back to his country. The 30-year old Nana said he nearly accomplished his mission and was preparing to return to Ghana when he was arrested. Nana said he came to Nigeria five years ago and had been busy stealing and making money but nemesis however caught up with him. He said he was a well known criminal in his home town in Kumasi, Ghana and because of his renowned notorious activities, he decided to relocate to Nigeria to continue his criminal activities. On how he came to Nigeria, he said his friend who lives in Nigeria helped him secure passage into the country, adding that, immediately he got into Nigeria, he began stealing and later graduated to car snatching. He said since he came to Nigeria, he had lived in four cities in four states namely, Abuja, Lagos, Edo and Rivers. He said he settled for car snatching because “you don’t need sophisticated weapon such as guns, pistol bullets etc to carry out the operation and it was easy to dispose the cars because a buyer was already ready to pay the money”. On the choice of cars he specialize in stealing, he said the demand are Toyota Cars especially Camry but Honda, Nissan Jeeps and others were also in high demand. He said he was arrested in Rivers State after one Alhaji who buys stolen cars from him was arrested in Abuja a fortnight ago. He said he was still surprised on what was happening to him because he never thought he would be arrested. Nana is a member of the five-man gang car syndicate arrested by the Lagos State Anti-Robbery Squad for car snatching in Nigeria. They were paraded by the Lagos State Commissioner of police, Mr Kayode Aderanti at Ikeja, Lagos. Some of the vehicles stolen were also recovered across cities in Nigeria. |
Politics / Nigerian Passengers Cancel US, Europe Trips Over Ebola! by Fetnet: 1:21pm On Oct 09, 2014 |
The spread of the Ebola Virus Disease to the United States and some European countries has forced many Nigerian travellers to cancel their flights to some of the affected countries. This is even as health and immigration officials at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos have been ordered to properly screen passengers coming into the country from the affected countries. The European countries of Spain and Norway have recorded cases of Ebola, with medical workers outside a hospital in Spain protesting over suspected cases of the disease. Investigation by our correspondent revealed that some passengers billed to travel from Nigeria had been cancelling their flights over renewed fears of the deadly disease. Mrs. Tope Philips, who was booked to travel on Delta Air flight to the US on Monday, cancelled the booking and opted to go to a Far East country for her vacation. “Ebola is very deadly and it is better to stay away and prevent it as much as possible. I will go to the Far East, maybe Jordan or Qatar, for my annual vacation and visit the US maybe next year. It is too dicey to take a risk now,” she said. Another passenger, Mr. Wilson Johnson, a Nigerian based in Ghana, said he had postponed his business trip to the US till December. “Thank God I am in a position to shelve the meeting. I cannot go now because my wife also called me from Accra, advising me not to go to the US now. They may not be as serious there as the Nigerian government that took charge of the Ebola situation,” Johnson said. An official of Delta Airlines, who gave her name as Marylyn Thomas, told our correspondent that since Ebola hit the US, some passengers had rescheduled or cancelled their flights. “It is becoming a serious issue and I think everyone is trying to be careful since the news broke out. Already, some passengers are showing serious concerns and some have gone as far as cancelling or rescheduling their flights,” Thomas said. Sources at the Aviation ministry and the Port Health Authority told our correspondent on Wednesday that officials had been told to intensify the screening process of people arriving from countries with reported cases of the EVD. An official of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, who did not want to be quoted, confirmed the development and told our correspondent that it was important not to take chances in the light of current happenings in the United States, Spain and Norway. “We just have to be careful to prevent any possible spillover since people come in from all parts of the world. We are battle ready to intensify screening and prevent any case in Lagos and Nigeria generally,” he said. An official of the Port Health Authority, who gave her name as Mrs. Esther Awoyemi, said officials had been kept on alert and that checks had been intensified since the fresh case of the EVD was reported in the US. She said, “As you are aware, the confirmed patient in US is dead. We have been instructed to take special care, especially with incoming passengers from the affected countries; and now, we are to be cautious of European and US passengers. “The ministry does not want a reoccurrence of what happened here a few months back; some countries are beginning to look up to us for strategies on how to contain the disease; so, we have to do everything to ensure that we do not have fresh cases.” http://www.punchng.com/business/business-economy/nigerian-passengers-cancel-us-europe-trips-over-ebola/ |
Politics / Texas Ebola Patient Dies!!!! by Fetnet: 5:17pm On Oct 08, 2014 |
(CNN) -- Thomas Eric Duncan, a man with Ebola who traveled to the United States from Liberia, died Wednesday morning at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, the hospital said. He had been in critical condition after being diagnosed with the virus in mid-September. People who have had contact with the Liberian national are being monitored for symptoms. It has just been a little over a week since Duncan began receiving treatment for the virus, and those days have spelled an "enormous test of our health system," said Dr. David Lakey, the commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services. "For one family it has been far more personal," he said in a statement. "Today they lost a dear member of their family. They have our sincere condolences, and we are keeping them in our thoughts." Did Duncan know he had Ebola? U.S. to check travelers for fevers He vowed that health care workers will continue to try to stop the spread of the virus "and protect people from this threat." The Ebola virus can live in dead bodies, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says, and it can be transmitted after death if the body is cut, body fluids are splashed, or if the body is handled. Only personnel trained in handling infected human remains, wearing protective gear, should touch or move Ebola-infected remains, the agency says. An autopsy should be avoided, it says, but if one is necessary, the CDC should be consulted. Airport screenings News of the death of the first Ebola patient diagnosed in the U.S. comes as a federal official told CNN that airports in the United States will begin taking the temperatures of arriving passengers who have flight itineraries originating from West African countries where Ebola is concentrated. The screenings will begin this weekend or next week, according to the source who has direct knowledge of the screenings. Among the countries considered to be in the so-called Ebola zone are Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria. The new measures at U.S. airports come a day after Dr. Thomas Frieden, the director of the CDC, told reporters that devising travel guidelines was in the works but nothing had yet been finalized enough to announce. Can you catch Ebola on a plane? The Ebola virus can spread through contact with bodily fluids -- blood, sweat, feces, vomit, semen and saliva -- and only by someone who is showing symptoms, according to the CDC. People with Ebola may not be symptomatic for up to 21 days. Symptoms generally occur abruptly eight to 10 days after infection, though that period can range from two to 21 days, health officials say. Air travelers must keep in mind that Ebola is not transmitted through the air, said Dr. Marty Cetron, director of the CDC's Division of Global Migration and Quarantine. "There needs to be direct contact frequently with body fluids or blood," he stressed. Cases in Europe Meanwhile, Frederic Vincent, a spokesman for the European Commission, told CNN on Wednesday that there have been eight confirmed cases of Ebola in European countries. There is one case in the United Kingdom that has been treated and the person has recovered; one case in France like that; two cases in Germany in which patients are receiving treatment; and three cases in Spain: two deceased Spanish missionaries and a nurse's assistant who is being treated. There is also a case in which a Norwegian staffer with Doctors Without Borders is being treated, he said. Also in Spain, health officials said four more potential Ebola cases -- in addition to the nurse's assistant -- are under observation. The nurse's assistant said that she had no idea how she had contracted the virus, but a doctor treating her said that she may have been exposed while she removed her protective suit. Dr. German Ramirez said the assistant, who is in isolation at Madrid's Carlos III Hospital, had told him it was possible that a part of the suit -- possibly the gloves -- touched her face. Cases in West Africa The globe's largest outbreak of Ebola has killed more than 3,400 people in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Since March, more than 7,400 people have contracted Ebola in those nations, according to the World Health Organization. The CDC is tracking the latest cases in the region. NBC News freelance cameraman Ashoka Mukpo was diagnosed with Ebola in Liberia on Thursday. He left Liberia on a specially equipped plane Sunday and was headed to Nebraska, the network reported. Frieden said Tuesday that battling the virus will be a "long, hard fight." "The virus is spreading so fast," he said, "that it's hard to keep up." |

Politics / Ghana Is Too Poor To Be Called A Country!! by Fetnet: 1:20pm On Sep 04, 2014 |
Ghana learnt it lesson during the 1980s and 1970s when its citizens were a disgrace all over west Africa and it economy was a basket case and it had many numerious military coup and military Government that wiped out its leadership and almost half of Ghana left for other countries like Nigeria, Ivory coast, Togo etc. Ghana has been able to be making progress in democracy and good governanc in the last 10 years but please Ghana should not jubilate too much because when Ghana is surrounded by almost 300 million people and other countries and people in unstable region in West Africa. Things can really go wrong in a minute. It is really for Ghana interest and Ghana should work for it in West Africa like President Akufor is doing in Nigeria now to help and Kofi Anan is doing in Ivory coast now, and Ghana has to use its diplomatic effort to help secure peace in West Africa because if not Ghana can go down in a minute. South Africa is going through the same thing thinking that poor and unstable people will not come. it is now tearing south Africa with peopel from Zimbabwe, Angola, Ruwanda, Somalia, Ethiopia and immigration laws cannot stop too many refugees. Remeber Ivory coast claim to be stable and surrounded by 300 million unstable nations and what happend and Ivory coast was alone in a bubble enjoying its small wealth, and what happended Refugees and problems from its neigbhours destroyes it, same with liberia, same sierra leaone, same with Kenya, Same with Zimbabwe, Same with Uganda, Same with congo, Same with Ruwanda So it is for Ghana to use its success by talking and engagement to help other wise 300 million unstable and mostly poor people will destroy Ghana no matter your immigration policy. Remember liberia is around the corner, ivory coast is around the corner, Nigeria is a stone throw, Niger, Chad, Burkina faso, Guinea. Finally,Ghana is the 3rd larges economy in West Africa and by many miles far from Nigeria economy and ivory coast the second largest After Nigeria . Ghana has a population of only 22 million people with GDP worth a country (Ghanas total worth) only 30 billion dollars.Ghana is a very poor country Ivory coast 2nd largest economy in West Afrcia with a population of 25 million people with GDP(ivory coast total worth) worth of 35 Billion dollars. Very poor country. Nigeria with a population of almost 170 million people has a GDP (total Worth of Nigeria) is almost 400 billion dolars (four hundred billion dolllars). second largest economy in Africa After South Africa and it has the population and potential to be bigger and double its economy in a minute if well manged to world standard The are seven States in Nigeria that are richer than Ghana and Ivory coast Nigeria 6 region each is richer than Ghana and ivory coast combined Look the are too many rich people and many dollars billionaires in Nigeria that have the money and resources to be war lords and cause havoc and creat their own private army and take over many countries in West Africa. Just imagine the havoc war lord Charles Taylor of Liberia and Konteh of Sierra leane cause with little money and few men few years ago. Lets pray that Nigeria does not have war otherwise everybody in West Africa is toast and in trouble because refugees from Nigeria will overwhelm every boddy. Ghana will get 50 million Nigerians in one month and Ghana will be toast and you cannot control that amount of people and they will head to Ghana and i assure you, another 30 million will head to Cameroon, and another 20 will head to Togo, another 20 will head to Benin Republic etc and no amount of force will stop them, because many of them will have money too fight and do all kind of thing and cause problems. So Ghana with its stablitity needs to work with Nigeria to make West Africa stable, because Nigeria problem is also Ghana problem so dont jubilate. http://www.modernghana.com/news/325853/1/ghana-best-in-the-region-but-ghana-too-poor-and-no.html ; ; 1 Like

Foreign Affairs / Ghana Economy Is A Mess!!!! by Fetnet: 11:00am On Sep 04, 2014 |
(Reuters) - Rising bond yields, mounting inflation and a weakening currency have taken the shine off Ghana, a country until recently hailed as a model for African growth. An oil boom helped fuel five years of GDP growth above 8 percent making Ghana an emerging market star, a stable democracy whose population of 25 million was moving steadily into middle income status. It is now, however, paying a steep price for not coming through with a new tranche of fiscal reforms. Political consensus is stymied, the public is dismayed by rising costs and the dream of new wealth is on hold. Analysts put the immediate difficulty down to a delay in announcing reforms, saying it makes it harder for the government to meet its 2014 economic targets and has increased the chance it will eventually need a bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). It has also created a perception of policy drift at a time of economic trouble rather than decisive action to shore up gains made during the boom years in which the gold and cocoa exporter started pumping oil. "The situation is becoming quite critical. There has been a chronic underestimation of the seriousness of the problem by the authorities," said Angus Downie, head of economic research at Ecobank. In May, faced with worsening economic indicators and rising calls for action, the government of President John Mahama said it would adopt a "home grown" stabilisation policy rather than resort to an IMF financial assistance programme. Such a policy would necessarily include spending cuts, steps for increasing revenue and an answer to costly public sector wages, the single biggest contributor to the rise of the deficit in 2012 to 11.8 percent. The government held a strategic planning meeting last month but is yet to announce new reforms. Instead, it is urging patience and pointing to measures to tighten foreign exchange rules and raise rates, coupled with subsidy cuts last year. Officials also say a Eurobond to be issued in U.S. dollars in July will lower debt costs, while seasonal cocoa inflows will steady a currency that has fallen 28 percent this year, the steepest decline in Africa. They also say that Ghana's mid-term prospects remain strong. PRINTING MONEY In the meantime, ordinary people are feeling the pinch, particularly with inflation running at 14.8 percent. Anastancia Bokpe, who operates a restaurant in the east Legon suburb of the capital, said she has been forced to nearly double the price of her popular goat soup. As a result, she fears losing the custom of the office workers, builders and civil servants who patronise her business because they too are under financial pressure. "Prices of ingredients in the market have been changing almost every month .... The only way I could still remain in business is to pass on a fraction of the price hikes to the consumer," she told Reuters. "We are already in a severe hardship and things are rather getting worse." For their part, economists lament what they say is government indecision dating back to November's annual budget. "There have been no fiscal reforms that suggest the deficit will narrow significantly this year," said Yvonne Mhango of Renaissance Capital in Johannesburg. Authorities aborted two auctions of longer-dated bonds due to high yields and concerns of risk-averse portfolio investors. Yields on the weekly auction are at a three-year high. Central bank governor Henry Kofi Wampah said the bank was funding the deficit but that the amounts fell within the allowed limit of 10 percent of revenue collection and any excess would be redressed by the end of the year. "We know the government is about to issue a Eurobond soon which we can use to replace the financing we have made, so it's not out of the ordinary or abnormal for us to provide the government’s financing needs at this time," Wampah told Reuters. Carmen Altenkirch, director of Africa ratings at Fitch, said money printing to fund the deficit would only raise pressure on inflation and a currency that has fallen 28 percent this year. The risk is that the government is forced to defend the currency with still higher rates, causing inflation and a spiral that will blunt growth projected to slow to 4.5 percent in 2014. As a result, there are few easy options. "The debt situation may now be so grave that the policy priority above almost everything else should be to contain it," said Razia Khan, head of Africa research at Standard Chartered. Mild inflation growth might be a better policy option, she said. POLITICAL PRESSURE One impediment to reform is stiff competition between the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition. Governments in Ghana, unlike in many other African states, are regularly ejected by voters at elections. The peaceful transitions are a source of national strength and pride but they also make governments more vulnerable to voter sentiment. The next election is not until 2016 but politicians say austerity is unpopular with voters, especially given expectations of a bonanza when oil came onstream in 2010. Ironically, each election year also tends to see a weakening of the fiscal position, as it does in many countries, so the window for restoring fiscal balance is closing fast ahead of 2016. The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) only narrowly lost the last presidential election and this week it stepped up its criticism of what it said was government economic mismanagement. At the same time, party supporters took to the streets in its stronghold city of Kumasi on Tuesday to protest against hardship. "I would want to see the government under an IMF programme because on their own they haven't shown the commitment to do the right things," said NPP finance spokesman Mark Assibey-Yeboah. Some commentators have called for a national consensus over fiscal policy given the situation. But they acknowledge this is unlikely in the political climate. http://uk.reuters.com/article/2014/06/13/uk-ghana-economy-analysis-idUKKBN0EO0L320140613 5 Likes 2 Shares |
Politics / South Korean Restaurant Institutes “no Africans Allowed” Policy 'cos Of Ebola by Fetnet: 12:30pm On Aug 19, 2014 |
Ebola is the new reason racists will use to justify their disgusting behaviour! The Korea Times is reporting that a restaurant in Seoul has instituted a “No Africans allowed” policy for fear of contracting the Ebola virus. Two signs displayed at JR Pub read, “We apologize, but due to Ebola Virus, we are not accepting Africans at the moment.” Since the restaurant doesn’t have a sure fire way of identifying Africans, I guess pretty much anyone that is black will not be served and allowed into the restaurant. This stinks of RACISM! No difference between this and “No Blacks Allowed” in Apartheid South Africa! As Africa’s largest economy Nigeria should make a move to ban all South Korean businesses operating in the country. This rubbish needs to stop! The last place someone that is suffering from Ebola will go to is a restaurant, especially as one of the early symptoms of the disease is lack of appetite! Two weeks ago, a South Korean university rescinded its invite to three Nigerian students , the reason given was that they were coming from an “Ebola region” WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF THE RESTAURANT’S DECISION TO BAN ALL AFRICANS BECAUSE OF EBOLA?
