Can you explain what you mean by not "guaranteed"? As in total loss?
You don't have to talk about stocks or crypto. I know those already.
In Canada apart from real estate, main stream investments are kind of limited to stuff like bonds, stocks, ETFs ,segregated funds, mutual funds etc your risk tolerance should determine where that money goes. What I mean by not guaranteed is no one can tell you for certain how well an investment will do but for investment like segregated funds, the company can give a minimum guarantee on maturity so not total loss

Most investment that will amount to anything isn't guaranteed for example look at what is happening in the market now or what happened during covid. But historically the market will correct itself. But if you want guaranteed investments like what the banks offer, just know you will make next to nothing because the on going rate for most banks are between 0.9 to 2% depending on the bank. So your risk tolerance will determine where you put your money. So except you want to put your money in things like GIC's every investment comes a level of risk.

use it as down payment in alberta or new brumswick, rent out the basement or use for airbnb, or rent out the whole house if you no like those provinces. Investing in this country is limited to maybe some stocks and crypto. Shitty rates everywhere

And also put into account Taxes, just TFSA's and investments through insurance can be tax exempt. All other investments may be subject to Taxes at one point.

hello everybody, please i landed in Canada last month in Toronto as a new PR holder but i need advice on how best to save or invest and not just keep money in bank account and losing it to inflation ....i need advice on how best utilize or invest 30k usadollars that is not urgently needed .i will appreciate any suggestion or contribution ..thank you

Investing is Canada is dependent on a number of factors cos returns on investments are mostly not "guaranteed"
So you may want to take into consideration factors such as your risk appetite, purpose of investing, how long you want to stay invested for e.t.c This would help make an informed decision on where to put the funds
So it will be better to sit with an Advisor to explore your options.
I am a licensed Financial Advisor so feel free to send me a DM and we can talk more

Thank you so much. Please, can I mail your for more information?

You can if you want to, but UBA should be your best bet. Got the card in 2018 so hopefully it is still a service they offer. And also make sure you ask all the questions to ensure the card can still do all I mentioned especially With all this changing policies.

Okay. Thank you. Will I be given a dollar card for the Dom account? Is there any other way to go around making payments before one travels?

I don't know if it's still available but I got a UBA AFRI card. It acts like a credit card but you have to preload it with dollars. Used it to pay for different stuff before we landed. U don't have to have an account with them. And you can still use the card in Canada if you still have money in it. It helped because when we arrived we didn't have Canadian dollars, so paid for stuff with it till we got settled

Please I need your advice!!
Which is the best way and time to book for flight for person coming in August for September intake in order to get it cheaper?
Is it booking directly from the airline company or using agent company e.g wakanow, travelbeta. Which is cheaper one is way cheaper and reliable. Your suggestions please.

It's cheaper to book directly with their app if you want to use Egypt air or Ethiopian air, booking on the app is cheaper than even on their website site. Not sure if it's still thesame but Saved closed to 200k when we came.

you guys were not truthful and it has caught up with you. Just wait for madam to finish school get a good job or pr shikena. Providing for 3 kids on a temporary visa is not child’s play.

Your advice may be the best way forward for this situation. But we can give advice without rubbing salt to injury. Let's just be abit kinder. Some times it's not that ppl are not truthful, it may be just be them following the advice of someone they trust or circumstance change.

This is story story story. Stew and source have been added to the original story. Social media story grin
Even illegals don't get deported like that, they go through some lengthy process and sometimes a judge can overturn the deportation order.
I'm not advocating breaking quarantine requirements but this story is definitely false.

My brother, I saw and thought to share to warn others o. My bad I should have done my due diligence first. Make I delet am sef.

story never happened. Canada is not that fast in processing deportation orders. Before cbsa gets to process deportation it takes a while after appeals. No one should break the law tho as they risk fines.

Oh really, saw it on my group and thought to share to warn others.

Thank you to everyone who has been contributing to this thread, it's been very helpful.
I have a question and will appreciate if the seniors can give insights.
I recently got a job offer in St John's NL for CAD85k, the company will process lmia and all. Will this salary be sustainable for I, my spouse and an infant in that province?

Your take home after tax will be about 60+k meaning about 5k a month. This is enough to manage ur life well. This is my opinion, I have never lived in NL. my family of 3 lived on about 2500 per month in edmonton when we arrived .

Canada is cold oh, but we are not sleeping outside. Most people also work indoors. Homes, cars, buses, offices, schools, malls, train stations are all heated. There is bus schedules to know when ur bus is coming (though they can delay some times) so it's not as if people can't function during winter. This cold issue was one of my fears before coming , but now I can boldly say it's not as bad as you think. I survived my first winter without a car and I was going to work everyday.

Long post alert
Landing story (pardon any mistakes)
I didn't start packing early as advised, I thought I was super woman multitasker hmmmm ... Let's leave that story for another day; if you know, you know. On the D day my parents and half of my clans people came to see us off to the airport, na so we carry convoy enter airport o, am sure some people thought we were VIP until they saw all the Ghana must go we were dragging around. It was really an emotional farewell especially with my mom she started crying o na so I join her and I think I saw my dad wiping his eyes too, as we no wan finish again, na so one of my cousins come say " this kind cry were you the cry, e be like say you go just cancel this journey remain with us abi" na so I say get behind me Satan o, I clean my eye, about turn face immigration.
We got there, on searching, this wicked evil people collected all my palm oil and still took 2500 for 3 bags containing food stuff, no wahala I leave them for my God.
Got to check in. I thought I had read on their site that we could pack with excess luggage of up to 39kg and pay $60, so I and my husband decided to pack two bags to 39 kg willing to part with $120. Na so we put first bag, the guy say " we can't take this, the maximum allowed is 32kg", ehn!!! Na so I confuse this was already about 11am and our flight was for 1:30. I thought we had time to spare because we had checked in online. The airport was full Soo we were running out of time. Nobody tell me to commot my wrapper tie my daughter for back, na so we start to rearrange o. In the end we now had Four bags we had to pay for. Long story short we finally boarded about 15 minutes to take off.
Journey to Addis Ababa was so smooth, my daughter loved the way the toilets on the plane flushed so she asked to wee like 7 times before we landed, I was forced to put a diaper on her.
At Addis during lay over na so my pikin go catch friend with one pikin na so them begin the run around. Before I know my pikin don vomit. Which kind wahala be dis one now, well cleaned her up and we boarded the plane to Toronto. Also very smooth flight, my madam slept almost through out.
We had just abt 2 hr to catch our connecting flight to Edmonton, so was quite happy when we got to Toronto earlier than expected, na so oga hurry us up finished our landing formalities in less than 20 minutes, did not have time to savour the experience sef. Oga did muscle work got our bags, we rushed to check in at air Canada still had an hour to go, flight was to be by 10 am. Na so we reach wia oyibo lady say our flight has been cancelled and we had been rescheduled for 6:55 pm. As I no cry for here, I no sure say I go cry again. I was so frustrated, we had to wait for close to 10 hrs , air Canada say no be their issue say them inform Ethiopian airline since about the change. After going back and forth I just told oga I am tired let's just wait we go mail them later.
Met up with a very nice Nigerian that kept us company, his gist made time fly a bit.
Time reached, we got on the 4 hours flight to Edmonton and this flight was not smooth unlike the first two.
Got to Edmonton on the 21st in one piece, took a taxi to our hosts place arrived at about 10:30pm, ate better rice took our bath and slept only for sun to start shining by 5am. Which kin wahala be dis.
So far so good, finished all our documentations and job hunt is on. So any referral will be appreciated.

Oakville19:

You process it personally either from Nigeria or I think a Nigerian embassy in Canada.

NDLEA Uncovers How Airport Staff Smuggled Drugs into Passangers Luggage.

https://dailypost.ng/2019/04/24/ndlea-uncovers-airport-cartel-planting-hard-drugs-passengers-luggage/

Soulbroda shared these audios by an airport staff about how one can be extra vigilant but it's in yoruba.

someone translated it and had this to say "The guy appears to be an airline agent who checks in passengers and is shares his experience on some related incidents he has witnessed".

There are 2 ways they generally plant these substances on people.

1. They look out for people who do not check in their maximum luggage pieces i.e. you check in 1 bag as against your 2-luggage allowance. So they check in a 2nd luggage in your name in collabo with airline staff. The way to mitigate this is to ensure you are only given one luggage claim tag. In the event that you find yourself in such circumstance, your evidence is your claim tag which should have 1/23 written clearly on it (1 piece of luggage weighing 23kg)"

"The 2nd one is the most deadly- usually perpetrated by luggage handlers. They allow you complete your check-in and simply open and insert the item into your bag...for this one there is no remedy yet as airlines are still fighting with nahco to install cctv cameras in the hall where luggage handlers sort

This is so heart breaking y will ppl be so heartless. Maybe the solution is to padlock your bags and use thread and needles to say short the outter pockets. God save us from evil people

Please house would like to ask question, please forgive it it has been asked before. A friend had a child when we where much younger, she should be about 16 plus now. She doesn't Know the where about of her daughter's dad. How possible will it be for her to apply for express entry with her daughter. It's kind of complicated as her daughter bears her surname since she wasn't accepted by her father n his family.
