Health / Burnt Teenager Sends S.o.s Over Hospital Bill.cal On Kind-heartd Nigerians 4help by foshola(m): 3:43am On Dec 01, 2008
Lying on her tummy in an hospital bed located in the densely populated Ajegunle area of Lagos, was 16-year-old Onyinye Tabowel. The teenager, no doubt ,was under excruciating pains as the pillow case on which she rested her head was wet with tears.

The tears, as was later discovered by Crime guard, was not just that of pains from the burns on her back. It was that of her mother’s inability to pay the hospital bill when she eventually becomes well.
She was brought to the hospital on October 28, 2008 after she was reportedly engaged in a fight with a co-tenant inside the commonly shared kitchen.

In the process, her opponent who is five years older, lifted a kettle filled with hot water from a lit stove and poured the contents on Onyinye. Her shout of help attracted other tenants in the face-me-I-face-you building, including her mother. Her ordeal heightened when she was first taken to one of the hospitals in the area only to be rejected because they could not deposit the N30,000 needed before the commencement of treatment.

All their entreaties and assurance that treatment should commence while they look for the money fell on deaf ears. At that point, Onyinye could no longer cry. She just stared blankly into space. At a point she managed to open her mouth and  whisper, informing her confused mother that she was running out of strength.

She was thereafter rushed to another hospital which stated same thing until the intervention of the policemen from Layeni division before treatment was administered on her.
Aside her pains, she expressed worry in this interview with Crime guard on the trauma her poor mother would be going through in order to get money requested for her treatment.

Excerpts:
“My worry now is not the pains I am feeling inside but the trouble my mum is presently going through because of it. Look at what Gladys(the tenant that poured the hot water) has put me through. My fault was that I went looking for our broom that morning.

When I woke up that fateful morning and could not find our broom, my mother said I should go to our neighbours to ask if it was with them. Usually we use each others things like broom, for instance, to sweep . But when I got to Mama Mose‘s room, she was angry saying I should not come to ask her such stupid question. I got same response when I got to Glady‘s room as well. In the process, we started arguing, leading to a fight during which we were separated.

My mother then called me to the room and said I should pour the cooked groundnut inside a basin before carrying it to our shop. At that point, I could not find the basin and as I made for the kitchen to get it, Gladys started insulting me again, saying she would teach me a lesson I  would leave to remember all my life. She landed me a slap across the face and I responded.

In the process, she just carried a kettle filled with hot water that was on a stove and poured it on me .   As I made to run, I slipped and fell giving her the opportunity to empty the whole content on me. That is all I can remember until I found myself in the hospital.”

21 -year-old Gladys, from Kwale, Delta state, on her part, admitted to the deed but said Onyinye started it all. According to her, “ I was just sitting on my own when she came out and started abusing me. It resulted in a fight during which I mistakenly lifted a kettle on the fire with an intention to hit her with it only for the hot water in it to pour on her back”.

Meanwhile, the case as gathered, has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba where detectives said the case would be taken to court after investigations.

Politics / Jos Mayhem Army Takes Over by foshola(m): 3:27am On Dec 01, 2008
Monday, December 1, 2008

The Nigerian Army on Sunday took over security in Jos, the Plateau State capital, two days after riots broke out in the city.
Chief of Army Staff, General Abdulrahman Dambazza, on Sunday personally led fully armed troops to take over security in the Plataeu State capital where hundreds have lost their lives since riots broke out in the city on Friday.

The police had earlier dispatched an Assistant Inspector General of Police, Mr. Richard Chime, to assist in quelling the riots, but when security reports became alarming, Dambazzau had to be moved to Jos.

The announcement last Friday of the results of the local council polls result, which sparked the riots did not help matters as tempers rose to the highest level and the situation would have gone out of hand, but for the intervention of the soldiers.

Dambazza arrived the tin city on Saturday and personally supervised the deployment of soldiers to hot spots around the state early Sunday morning, amidst sounds of sporadic gunshots. He also led his men in patrolling the streets of the troubled state capital. He also visited displaced persons and assured them of relief materials.

Soldiers mounted checkpoints in parts of the city and patrolled the streets in jeeps and on foot. Passers-by were ordered to raise up their hands while passing even as the soldiers continued to enforce the dusk to dawn curfew imposed on the city by the state government.
Army spokesman, Brig. General Emeka Onwamaegbu told AFP on Sunday that the crisis was gradually abating.

"The situation is gradually returning to normal. There’s not been any cases this morning," he said.
About 400 people are believed to have lost their lives in the mayhem, even as property worth hundreds of millions has been razed.
Plateau State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Nuhu Gagara, told journalists on Sunday that hoodlums from neighbouring states unleashed fresh mayhem on the city at the weekend after Friday’s carnage had been successfully curtailed. He maintained that the riots and the subsequent destruction were pre planned as the elections had been concluded before some hoodlums decided to unleash mayhem on the state.

He expressed the state government’s regrets on the crisis and said a search and rescue committee put in place by the government was already working to locate the dead and the injured.
Contrary to reports that nearly 400 souls might have perished in the crisis, the commissioner said about 200 people died.

At the town’s Central Mosque, the Aid Group of the Ja’amatu Nasril Islam was preparing mass burial for the victims whose identities could not be ascertained.
Murtala Sani Hashim, who registered the dead as they were brought to the mosque, told Reuters on Sunday that 367 bodies had been brought in so far.
The Red Cross said about 7,000 people have fled their homes and had taken refuge in government buildings, army barracks and religious homes.

A spokesman for the Imam at the Jos Central Mosque, Samaila Abdullahi Mohammed, accused the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state of fuelling the crisis.
"The PDP provided an all Christian ticket. They started the trouble because they couldn’t win," he observed. He accused policemen and troops deployed to quell the riots of "heavy-handed tactics." "As far as we are concerned, we have stopped the violence, but the police have not," he further said.
Meanwhile, the Abia State government has been appealing to people in the state to remain calm following the destruction in Jos. In a message continuously run on electronic media in the state since the Jos crisis commenced, the government urged the people not to embark on reprisal killings following the situation in the Plateau State capital.

Also in Anambra State, the situation remained calm on Sunday even as the government appealed to the people not to embark on violent attacks over the Jos crisis.
At the Vatican on Sunday, Catholic Pontiff, Pope Benedict XVI, prayed for the victims of the Jos mayhem. He urged the world to express horror and disapproval at the senseless violence.
Executive Director of the Christian Foundation for Social Justice and Equity, (CFSJES), Mr. Joseph Sangosanya, described the situation as "genocide."

The CFSJES director said the state government mismanaged the whole situation because it allegedly ignored security reports about in-flow of people into Jos.
Sangosanya dismissed as untrue, the assertion by the commissioner for information that there was no security reports, stressing that "the letters written by the civil society to the security agencies that they should beef up security in Jos and its environs were ignored by the government.
"The information system by all the government agencies was not properly managed. Late deployment of soldiers contributed to the mass killings, which we see as genocide and the process of the election itself, which was not credible, led to the mayhem.

"And we see the aggressors as the few individuals who want to perpetuate their expansionist tendencies and we ask that the government should immediately set up a judicial commission of inquiry to unravel the immediate and remote cause(s) of the carnage and those arrested should be charged to court immediately.

The CFSJES director called on the government to, as a matter of urgency, release all the past reports of all the commissions of inquiry into the Jos crises.
He urged the state government to arrest those indicted by those past reports no matter how highly placed so that it could serve as a deterrent.

Health / 2008 World Aids Day by foshola(m): 3:17am On Dec 01, 2008
Today is World AIDS Day. It is a day set aside by health ministers around the world to engender a spirit of social tolerance and greater awareness of Human Immuno-deficiency Virus and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) on an international scale.

It is also to draw the attention of world leaders and remind them to keep commitments they have made to fight the deadly disease. The theme of this year’s event is “Leadership”, with the slogan “Stop AIDS: Keep the Promise.”

The theme, no doubt, is a challenge to individuals, organisations and governments to lead in the response to the disease. Since the inception of this commemoration in 1988, it has been marked with fanfare, seminars and other activities aimed at halting the spread of the pandemic, globally.

While the spread of the disease can be said to have considerably reduced in Europe and America, the same cannot, however, be said of Africa where it has remained the leading cause of death in the population. Ever since the 1980s when the disease gained global attention till now, it has ceased to be a death sentence as pharmaceutical companies have developed drugs that could effectively reduce the viral load in affected people and enable them lead normal lives. Research efforts are also being intensified to find a possible cure for the disease in future.

But in sub-Saharan Africa, where the disease is still on rampage, there is, regrettably, slow progress in the march to halt its spread. Apart from the inefficient national health systems in Africa, there is still a lot of superstition and ignorance about the pandemic as well as stigmatization of those already down with the condition. While a lot of funds from donor agencies are deployed into AIDS awareness campaigns, little is dedicated to giving care and treatment to those living with the disease. The situation is not helped by the unnecessary stigmatization of people living with HIV/AIDS. This stigmatization could be responsible for the reluctance to disclose their status by persons living with HIV/AIDS.

Also, the apathy of some citizens in many African countries for counselling and HIV tests to know their status is perhaps making it difficult to actually ascertain the number of people living with the virus on the continent. According to the figures released last year by the World Health Organization (WHO), there are now 33.2 million people living with HIV. And, out of this, 2.5 million were newly infected with the virus. About eight countries in sub-Saharan Africa now accounts for almost one-third of all new infections and AIDS deaths in the world.

In Nigeria, available statistics show that the disease is decreasing. A survey conducted among women attending antenatal clinics in various parts of the country recently showed that the incidence of the disease has reduced from 5.8 percent in 2003 to 4.4 percent in 2005. This is further buttressed by the claim by the National Agency for the Control of AIDS in Nigeria (NACA) and other organisations which work in the field of HIV/AIDS in the country that the prevalence rate has further been reduced to 3.6 percent across various sections of Nigeria’s population.
In spite of the reduction, the country still has over 250,000 positive persons on Anti-Retroviral Treatment (ART) and almost 12,300 positive mothers receiving treatment to prevent transmission of the infection to their babies.

Let us use this occasion to scale up treatment, care and prevention services to ensure a comprehensive and sustainable response to HIV/AIDS. We call on all tiers of government to work in concert to ensure that the pandemic is given the utmost priority in the nation’s health systems. Persons living with the condition should not be discriminated against in whatever form. Let all HIV/AIDS information be presented in ways that do not reinforce stigma while employers of labour should educate their employees about the prevention of HIV/AIDS in the workplace.

, laments man accused of beating his wife to death

Homicide detectives at the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos are battling to unearth the circumstances surrounding the sudden death of a middle-aged housewife and mother, Justina Mebele of Number 2, Oremeji Street, Oshodi, Lagos.

The death of the housewife is more intriguing as a result of allegations that it was her husband, John Mebele that beat her to death inside their room on November 17, 2008. The report made at the Police station after the woman gave up the ghost was that the couple had a disagreement over feeding allowance and during the struggle that ensued, her husband started beating her.

The beating allegedly continued unabated in spite of passionate pleas from neighbours until the woman collapsed and died later in a hospital. She was said to have kept on vomiting blood after the husband who fought with her left their compound. Reports said, their neighbours did not pick up the courage to rush her to hospital until some of her relations were contacted and they rushed her to hospital. Unfortunately, efforts by a team of doctors to save her life failed as a result of the quantity of blood she lost after the beating by her husband.

After she was confirmed dead, the family members reportedly brought her corpse back to their house and dumped it there for the husband. It was gathered that as soon as her husband was summoned to rush back home, he came only to be told that the wife he was fighting with few minutes ago had died. He was said to have disappeared to an unknown place prompting police to declare him wanted. However, few days later, he was picked up and is presently being detained at SCID Panti while investigations into the case continues.

In this encounter with the embattled husband of the dead woman, he stated categorically that his wife has been sick for a long time and that they only disagreed over the provision of money for feeding. The Delta state born husband of the woman who is from Abia State gave vivid details of what took place before his wife died.to Crime Guard;

“I have been married for five years and we have one child aged a year and six months. On Saturday one of my brothers came to my house and gave N1000 to my wife and I was there when he gave her the money. He gave the money because he knew our condition. My wife has been suffering from pneumonia for about five months and her family knows about it. I informed her elder brother when she went for test that cost N1,500 and we got drugs that helped stop the coughing of blood. She coughs and urinates blood and that is why she wears pads.

“Somebody directed us to a woman who claims to be a specialist on pneumonia. When we contacted her, she told us that the drugs were very expensive but we should start with those we can afford so I asked her not to use the money my brother gave her on any other thing but for the drugs. Later around 5 pm, I instructed her to take the money to the woman which she did immediately. Around 7pm, she returned with bad news that the woman lost her brother, but that she collected her numbers from her children. When we called her, she told us that she was with the rest of her family at Ajangbadi and they are meeting over her brother‘s death but promised to stop over at our house while coming home. However, we waited for her but she did not come.

“On Sunday we went to church. My wife did not go with us. She went to Chosen with our neighbours who worships there. On Monday when I wanted to leave the house, she asked me for money but I told her that I only have N60 with me and I asked her to take N40 for our son’s breakfast assuring that when I return later in the day, I will get more money for food. After my pleadings, she refused to listen to me but rather blocked my way insisting that I must give her more money. At that stage, I had no option than to push her out of my way because I had to go out and find how to get money for them. I have been unemployed for two years now I must go for jobs on time to be able to get something for all of us. As I was going out, one of our neighbours who heard when we were arguing came to intervene but I left him with my wife.

“ Few minutes later while I was with a friend at Oshodi, I received a call from a woman who told me that my wife had fainted. I took a bike home only to be told that she had been taken to Ikeja General Hospital. I went straight to the hospital and when I got there, they said she was not there and I went back home. The next thing I saw was the police. They said I murdered my wife”.

The visibly shaken husband who could not control his tears lamented to Crime Guard, “Why must I beat my wife to death?. Who will look after my small son? It was a minor disagreement and you know women, she wanted to vent her anger on me but I rather insisted on going out to get what we will eat for the day. If I had known that the whole thing will end like this, I would have quietly left her alone and stayed in the house because I know that when she starts feeling hungry, she would definitely get out of my way. What kind of devil caused this. She must have died because of her state of health and not as a result of the push I gave her”.
