Career / For Smokers: Tomatoes, Apples Can Repair Damaged Lungs by Francis59: 10:57pm On Dec 24, 2017
Smokers who quit smoking and live on a diet high in tomatoes and fruits, particularly apples, have better chances of restoring their lung functions impaired by smoking, a new study finds.

The study, published in the December issue of the European Respiratory Journal, said former smokers who eat more tomatoes and fresh fruits on a regular basis saw a slower natural decline in lung function over a 10-year period.

Tomatoes
The study was conducted by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

According to it, adults who on average ate more than two tomatoes or more than three portions of fresh fruits and vegetables a day had a slower decline in lung function, compared to those who ate less than one tomato or less than one portion of fruits, respectively, on a daily basis.

Chinese scientists developed fast charging aluminum-graphene battery
December 24, 2017 technology
A team of researchers from Zhejiang University have developed a new type of aluminum-graphene battery that can be charged in seconds, instead of hours.
The team, led by professor Gao Chao, from Department of Polymer Science and Engineering of Zhejiang University, designed a battery using graphene films as anode and metallic aluminum as cathode.
The battery could work well after quarter-million cycles and can be fully charged in seconds.
Experiments show that the battery retains 91 percent of its original capacity after 250,000 recharges, surpassing all the previous batteries in terms of cycle life.
In quick charge mode, the battery can be fully charged in 1.1 seconds, according to Gao. The finding was detailed in a paper recently published in Science Advances.

Education / Lybia Slave Trade by Francis59: 12:13am On Dec 20, 2017
By Ibrahim M.O. Progress.

Martin Luther Kings (Jr) envisioned a future were there will be absence of oppression of a race by another race. Will the dream becomes a reality or not? This 21st century slavery and oppression of the black has not been pronounced until the recent Lybia Slave trade. Modern Slavery is an economic slavery. It's a situation whereby certain groups of people are held hostage for the purpose of mentary exchange.

The Lybia slave trade occurs when Africans who are caught in the border of Lybia are held hostage by some citizens of Lybia. These African hostages are sold to highly placed people as slaves. Some will be forced to work in the farm, some will be used for medical purposes and some will be conscripted into terrorist groups.

Well, Africans that are being held as slaves in Lybia intends to travel to Europe. Travelling to Europe without a visa will require them to take an illegal routes. This illegal routes is the route that lead to Lybia and the Mediterranean sea. A large numbers of this illegal emigrants are from Africa such as Nigeria, Ghana, Togo etc. In their attempt to cross the Mediterranean sea sometimes many will get drawn. Unfortunately, many caught in the border of Lybia are apprehended and become commodity for slave trade.

Hello Ibadan, a US Judge born in your city just made history

The Judge who just stood up to Donald Trump was born in Ibadan. One more reason to cheer.

Judge Wendy Beetlestone of Pennsylvania (Charlotte Clymer)
An Ibadan born Judge has prevented US president, Donald Trump, from enforcing new rules with respect to Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act--otherwise called Obamacare.
If Trump had had his way, any employer would have been able to claim a religious or moral objection to Obama’s birth control mandate.

However, Judge Wendy Beetlestone ruled that the Commonwealth will suffer “irreparable and serious harm” from Trump’s proposal.

Politics / Dear I Go Dye, You Are Right, But We Can Fix Nigeria Together by Francis59: 2:50pm On Dec 08, 2017
Dear I Go Dye,
I read your post on Instagram. It was hard to miss it because it was on every major news website. I would like to say that you were mostly right. The questions you raised in your post are similar to the ones I have been asked by other young people on social media, so am replying this not just to you as a person, but to all young Nigerians who have asked similar questions.
Firstly, you are right. The Nigerian youth have often been taken for granted, and almost every leader in our history has taken young people for granted. But it’s important to point how this started – for people like me who saw Independence; our leadership was mostly driven by young people. Then came the coups, and the civil war, and then more coups. Nigeria ended up with long period of military dictatorship for many decades, in which time; those young leaders aged, but still remained leaders. Fela, Gani,

PARABLE OF ONIONS AND WHY MARK ZUCKERBERG IS RICHER THAN GHANA

Dr Mensa Otabil Founder of the International Central Gospel Church infected and provoked a mass of young entrepreneurs with yet another signature performance, a destiny changing motivational message that will linger in the minds of many, for many years to come. He was to give a keynote address at Albert Ocran's springboard convocation programme, but he did far more than that. He planted, watered and nurtured a seed of holy anger in the army of entrepreneurs, hoping that anger will eventually germinate into fruits that will reverse the backwardly suffocating systems, laws and policies in Ghana(Nigeria);

Business / Cassava Is Positively Impacting Mozambican Smallholder Farmers by Francis59: 11:12am On Nov 27, 2017
Judging by its brown bottle packaging, Mozambique’s Impala beer looks just like any other beer on the market. Not until you have smelt it, will you realise it has an unmistakably mysterious taste to it. Although it is brewed like a typical beer, Impala is made from cassava, a root vegetable that grows in tropical areas. There’s a quiet cassava revolution in Africa as organisations and governments realise the plant’s impact on empowering smallholder farmers and developing rural communities.
