Gurus in the house, I have a question that has been bugging my mind for a while now.
Sirs/mas, if I'm going to do a DPC ( pour concrete on a DPM), why then should I bother myself with all the partitions during the excavation of the foundation? Why not just get the external diameter, and make some partitions and leave the rest? For instance, instead of digging toilet, ante room, parlour dining, kitchen, store, all the rooms, etc. Why not just a selected few out of all those and then, do the full partitioning after the DPC has been done. I hope I'm understood. Thanks.

Thats is not good please, use a professional for your job. Nobody does that.

Pls House, can someone help me on how to treat my well water for drinking.
Note the well has been dug 2 yrs ago during my house foundation ,lid cover and ring has been provided, the well has been a blessing for the street but i want to make it more neater for drinking now. Am planning to move to my house soon.

Get a water treatment unit close to the well, connect your surface pump to the unit and then from the unit to your storage facility.

Thank you.

A soil test was done though, the result indicates that the immediate underlying soil is made of LOOSE GREYISH FINE GRAINED SANDS followed by SOFT DARK BROWNISH PEAT.

Is compaction really all that necessary with a pile foundation? i am just wondering, given that the superstructure will be supported by piles which are connected directly to the hard rock deep down. this is why i think the filing medium will not make that much difference. there will not be significant settlement (if any) to the structure whether you use sharp sand or not. i stand to be corrected.
for a two plots of land waterlogged seriously in excess of 1m, then you could easily be talking about over a million naira difference between this two choices of filling sand.

if it were a raft foundation, then the type of filling sand takes a greater significance.

I think the picture is clearer now. You are right about insignificant settlement with your adopted foundation (pile). settlement in deep foundations like yours is very infinitesimal. You can go with your choice of filling sand, but be mindful to compact fully in three layers and damp proof properly to eliminate permeability.......preferabely 'double layer' since according to you the site is water logged. Of course you and I kno this measure wil save the occupants the stress of running away during rainy season like most landlords and tenants in Lekki/Ajah

Sorry for the delayed response though and good luck in your project!!

There seem to be no consistent practice to this sand filling thing. tends to change depending on who you speak to, even the Engr/builders sometimes have different opinions.

Trying to sand fill a location for a project starting soon, max 3months, so they recommend sharp sand due to the short time. Then I find out there’s different sharp sand.

Questions:

(A) Can we use the white “sharp” sand being reclaimed from dredging activities? Since this may likely come cheaper, any downside? Will same settling be achieved with compaction?

(B) the other coloured coarse sharp sand. Is it true this soaks more water and therefore will require less volume to fill same area when compared to (a) above?

(C) Can both types of sharp sand be mixed? Can we use a combination of both? Any effect?
Since I understand sometimes clients can’t even tell the difference anyway, so might be happening a lot.

One thing I’ve agreed on is that the red filling sand is not an option due to the short period, but I’ll like clarity on the sharp sand characteristics and suitability.

Foundation type is Pile.

Thanks

Soil has varying engineering properties which are best determined in a soil labouratory. However from practice and experience, sharp sand is more densely packed. Which is a good 'property', compacting this to maximum dry density wil yield a very good result. U wil definitely achieve a uniform consolidation and settlement.

I recommend sharp sand. Plz in no way shud you consider mixing with another sand if ur aim is to achieve a uniform settlement.

However for question (B) ........the more the coarse the more volume you require. The soil will shrink considerably after compaction

Hello Architects and Builders in the house. Can 3 blocks of 4 bedroom Terrance duplex comfortably enter into a plot of 100ft by 60ft with enough packing space. The rooms must be standard room.
I need your advise.Thanks

You might want to consider 2 terraces instead. 3 will be crowded for your plot, depending on location some estates may not allow a built up area exceeding 70%. Which applies here with 3 terraces. Anyways with a good architect like mine you can achieve that.

My brother since you did not provide the layout (Architectural drawing you can only get a round up
U said ur land is dry so possibly your structural engineer may recommend isolated pad footing for ur foundations which is not pocket recking.

Budget close to 3m - 4.5m from ground zero to DPC

@OP, the solution to your problem is on the inside of you if you had those credentials you mentioned. I graduated with 2.2 in botany but I got a job in a redundant federal commission that reduces salaries without circular to why it happened. I had to start working on fiverr to keep my family together despite the 70+ I collect every month it doesn't solve my problem it only pay my monthly bills and food but I earn *2 of that from the little computing I learned myself. I can boast in God today that am better of than last year when I never started fiverr full time. I have USA clients that give me works on a rolling basis but no one would believe I studied botany- PLANT SCIENCE. If you can only think outside the box you will never look for a job again. I have a friend who studied the same course but a react.js professional, he just got a job of 125k today with no connection but just dexterity and a bit of passion to see outside what's outside the computer science curriculum. So THINK THINK AND THINK, That 20k for business may not come o walahi, been there before and I know what am saying, but you have a laptop (am sure of that), you have battery? you have small gen? what are you waiting for?

This will pass off for a good advice.

Most contractors wil quote ridiculously low just to get d job.The quotation is not all encompassing its kinda unprofessional and crappy!!

Available Drawing?

Iron bender labour 18k/ton, meanwhile you are buying the rings already price have to come down
Carpenter is high
block setting is N50/block
Setting out N10,000
Granite 20tons N110,000
Sand 20tons N50,000
2x3 N350each
Binding wire 10kg N3000

10k for setting out is not ok, I would rather you don't mislead the client. Is probably a one unit shop u can set out with that amount.

There is actually no need for a central support, all dat is needed is a properly designed column which will cater for d evenly distrbuted roof load.
I am tempted to believe dat the roof load was underestimated. And am sure the concrete grade used for d columns was smaller dan the designed fcu. I am pretty sure dat d percentage of steel choosen is quit small aswell

Dont get it twixted!!!!! for a project of this magnitude there must have been a supervising engineer!!!!!!! Engineer has LEVELS.

Sorry wasn't u I intended to quote........apologies

What are you saying?...are you a civil engineer?I guess you are not, cos of the terms you used? Steel roof systems are meant for long spans (they only need supports at their extreme ends), ie if it's properly designed by a professional and experienced civil/structural engineer. Steel sections are very efficient in performing that function, that was why timber wasn't used or ain't used for long spans. I know this cos I'm a civil engineer, and I have modeled, analysed and designed more complex steel roof systems, with much longer spans.

Now, from the pictures I have seen, the concrete quality is BAD! The columns were under reinforced, the steel roof lost stability due to poor connections between the members and between the trusses and the supporting columns, the diagonals' section sizes and also due to the fact that the columns meant to take horizontal thrust and moment failed in shear as a result of being poorly reinforced (the concrete columns where forced to take tension...concrete doesn't take tension, it.will shear). From the state of the construction site, quacks were in charge doing what to have absolutely no professional idea of.

There's no way they would have had some immediate signs of collapse, cos steel fails plastically(ie there are no warming signs), ie if it was even analysed and designed, which I firmly doubt!

May the souls of the dead rest in peace. AMEN.

U nailed it colleague!!!!!!! same were my analysis.

nne what has the load bearing capacity of the soil got to do with a collapsed roof that left the walls still standing? You wan show yasef abi?
This is probably due to wrong distribution of loads of the roof which created a point load at the centre. This was caused by gravitational force acting downwards from the king post undecided

Bro take it easy.........Lol!!!! but if u take a closer look you will also observe that the the contrator tried to bond the rafters directly to the concrete beam!!!! there was no H-beam, no bolted joints. connection was just zero member sizing was bad and probably concrete quality was equally poor.

The consultant has to produce the design n the contractor has to justify his construction method.

Well did anybody notice the member sizing? Those structural members looks kinder undersized from the pics. Could it have been poor member sizing supporting excess roof load coupled with poor construction method that ochestrated this collapse? Well we can only wait n see the outcome of the inquest.
