Travel / Re: Many Die in Nigerian Plane Crash (Sosoliso) by galala: 11:49am On Dec 13, 2005
Why call the president an Idiot? |Since when does a tree make a forest? Is he the only one responsible for where nigeria is?
What about all those who have been in the aviation system for years and continue to make money in a crooked manner at the expense of others. Our problem is one of Avarice and lack of compassion. The airline operators have no regard for the lives of their own people. Money is what drives nigeria and so in all spheres we have a country that does not work and a people who are so corrupt that now it seems ironic that we dont want to accept that most of the people dragging nigeria down are our own kin. Who has relations in the aviation industry who condone this situation? or friends who win contracts to supply equipment which doesn't work? the proprietors of Sosoliso bellview and the other airlines who conspire against their people to bring flying molues into nigeria as airplanes? People should vent their anger on those people. maybe if some of them are treated like the scum they are then things will change.
These are people common nigerians know so why are we all waiting for the government in abuja.
Music/Radio / Re: Best Nigerian Musicians? by galala: 10:54am On Dec 07, 2005
I have read all the posts before mine carefully and have the following impression:
Music should uplift the soul. It should also contain coded information about the culture of the composer / performer.
It helps if the practitioners are serious about their craft and not aping the latest american fashion. I think the praises being heaped on the new artists is an insult to the memory of those artists who have created masterpieces that touch people all over the world. i have nothing against the new breed hip hop and soul artists like ruggedman and Tu face but please is one or two albums  enough to decide they are the best nigerian musicians. That is an insult to the geniuses who have done a lot of work over the years. As nigerians we tend to over praise our own. Well what that does is set them up for a big fall. winning kora and all that are actually baseless and have nothing to do with the cultural validity of music. I like what raregroove posted but again maybe we are of a different time. It seems the lack of knowledge and quality education forces us to make mediocre choices.
How many of these so called stars can read a note of music or even competently arrange their sounds. How many have paid their artistic dues. How many are doing music for the right reasons ..?
To get the best nigerian music you have to go back in time to the era of Fela Kuti Bala miller and Haruna Ishola.
Actually Chris Okotie the pastor and ex musician was better than any of the current so called stars in nigeria.
Music/Radio / Re: Beautiful Nubia: What do you know about him? by galala: 10:42am On Dec 07, 2005
He is an original artist. I like him as he seems to have a vision and pursues his art diligently.
Literature / Re: Best African Author: Wole Soyinka or Chinua Achebe? by galala: 1:54pm On Nov 29, 2005
it is interesting but i do not consider either of the two respected writers to be the best African author. Also may i advise that being a contentious issue we leave tribe politics and other non literary considerations behind. Regarding both writers they write differently and have different concerns. i must say i am a Yoruba but found i could relate to Achebe's characters especially Okonkwo who shared certain characteristics with my dad. Soyinka's auto biography's are accessible so it all depends rally on the context and what you want from their books..
Now to vote:
my favorite Nigerian Writer is Cyprian ekwensi. Jagua Nana People of the city etc
Favorite African Writer is Sony Tabou lansi of congo. Please read his book the anti people and wonder!
finally it is a Nigerian no American trait to judge things in terms of the best. can we not just continue appreciating them for what they have contributed to our country. How can you judge something as subjective as Art satisfactorily..
Sports / Re: BBC African Footballer of the Year 2005 by galala: 1:44pm On Nov 29, 2005
It has to be Samuel Eto'o Fils.
Fantastic footballer.he possesses the following aplenty: Pace , technique , Power and strength.
He is a devastating presence in any team in the world. He can walk into any of the top teams i.e Chelsea , Milan, Man U, juventus and will be guaranteed a starting place.
Also may i say that it is Nigeria's obsession with individual play and over the top flamboyance which kills us and informs our choice of football heroes. The trajectory of Okocha career does not do justice to the claims that he is Africa's best. We should not allow others to push us toward our own Harlem globetrotters .

Politics / Re: Nigerians Are the Most Corrupt People In the World? by galala: 11:45am On Oct 25, 2005
A part of the Nigerian problem is our self denial. In 1987 as a young lawyer in Lagos i had an argument with the female clerk in court who hissed at me because i did not leave her the change left over after paying court fees. Her attitude was like that of most people in both the public and private sector. Gross and perverse greed coupled with a lack of morals and respect for self. For our information there is the physical corruption we know involved in bribe taking and giving but what of the moral corruption which has meant that our people are living in a false world. where everyone is out to cheat the other , where husband and wife deceive each other while publicly professing their undying love for each other, where most girls have to sleep their way to economic survival and where we still think it is OK to have servants slaving over us. Burkina faso is one of the poorest countries in the world. Ditto Mali . yet crime is relatively rare in those countries. a people without dignity and pride in themselves who refuse to invest in their children will lose their wealth and their honour and finally their freedom.
Politics / Re: Who Should Be the Next President of Nigeria? by galala: 10:28am On Oct 14, 2005
i believe we should follow certain priciples in choosing the next president.
First it is implicit that there will be a shift across the niger so that excludes most southern aspirants. If they are really concerned about nigeria the country they would put personal ambition and egoistic attitudes away. The next point is now that we have to encourage the side of nigeria which is to produce the next president to give us a credible honest and reform minded leader who will have the interests of the entire federation at heart.
So far the current circus of opportunistic politicians are not allowing us to see clearly but i believe the we should exclude people with questionable wealth morals and character.
That would eliminate clearly messrs Atiku, Babangida and Marwa.
Sports / Re: Best Nigerian Footballer of All Time by galala: 10:12am On Oct 14, 2005
Finidi george. Why? Simple answer . the statistics speak volumes.
Top nigerian in Fifa list of world footballers as voted by football managers journalists and players.
First nigerian and i believe probably still the only nigerian player to be voted as footballer of the year in a european league (dutch eredivisie) not once but twice by both the players and managers as well as journalist.

The only nigerian player to have consistently in his career scored against the big european clubs during his career in europe. He once scored a hat trick for real betis of seville against
f c barcelona and scored against real madrid , chelsea , bayern munich (his goal against them was voted goal of the tournament in the 95 champions league campaign) many other top clubs .

A quiet man he went about his football with dignity and poise and was in my humble opinion the complete footballer as he proved while playing for the super eagles as either right winger, right midfielder or even as playmaker on occassion.

i choose him for his vision on the field of play his ability to switch play and his impact on our style of football from his first match for the nigerian national team against burkina faso (7-1) to his last match the 3rd place match against mali at the African cup of nations 2002.
Literature / Re: Which Books/Novels Are You Currently Reading? by galala: 2:10pm On Oct 13, 2005
I am currently reading tent of miracles a novel by the brazillian writer jorge amado. it is nice and along with Dona floor and her two husbands has a lot of references to afican culture which is the doinant social force in bahia brazil. Another nice book is the anti people by sony labou tansi the congoleese writer . I think we should try and read more african writers. i remember the african writers series with nostalgia.
Music/Radio / Ayetoro and Funsho Ogundipe by galala: 12:55pm On Oct 11, 2005
I have been following this group for some time.   Their new video and song Nigeria Blues Part 2 is being rotated on Silverbird TV and on Lagos Radio.

A lot of quality instrumentals and a nice vocal delivery mark him out.  I think they must have a few albums to their name i was impressed when I watched them in London five weeks ago as part of the Africa 05 Programme.Check out www.ayetoro.com
Music/Radio / Re: Let's Talk Jazz by galala: 12:39pm On Oct 11, 2005
Nigeria has had a tradition of jazz influenced players over the years and even in the 80's we had our own international jazz festivals where Dizzy was a guest of honour and Toshiko akiyoshi played with her big band.

Of all the musicians playing now both at home and abroad i think funsho ogundipe of ayetoro has been able to create a nigerian sound based on jazz . i remember his songs something dey from 98 and also the new one being played on lagos radio Naija blues pt2.
u can check out his band website
