Nairaland / General / Robert Martins Eze Shares Insights On Sustainability With Abuja's Environmental by gannetng(m): 9:57am On Nov 08, 2023
Abuja, November 6, 2023: The Environmental Protection Club in Abuja had the privilege of hosting Mr. Robert Martins Eze, a prominent environmental and social safeguard expert based in Abuja, during a recent parley held in the club's office. The event provided a valuable platform for an exchange of ideas and experiences in the realm of environmental sustainability and safeguarding.

Mr. Robert was warmly welcomed to the clubhouse by the members of the club, who were eager to tap into his wealth of knowledge. The parley was a remarkable experience-sharing session, highlighting the importance of collective efforts in safeguarding the environment for future generations.

During the gathering, Robert Martins Eze emphasized the critical role that each individual plays in environmental protection. He stated, "Environmental protection is everyone's business. We cannot jeopardize the future for the sake of our current needs. We must strike a balance, and this is where sustainable development comes into play."

Mr. Robert's insights resonated with the audience, underscoring the importance of taking proactive measures to preserve the environment. He shed light on the various aspects of environmental safeguarding, including sustainable practices, responsible resource management, and the need to mitigate environmental degradation.

Following the parley, Robert Martins Eze addressed press members, reiterating his commitment to advancing environmental causes. He encouraged others to join the movement, emphasizing that environmental protection is a shared responsibility.

Dr. Kristie Hart, the President of the Environmental Protection Club, expressed her gratitude to Mr. Robert for accepting the club's invitation. She praised his dedication to environmental causes and willingness to share his insights with the club's members. Dr. Hart also unveiled an ambitious plan for the club to expand its reach by introducing branches in secondary schools across Abuja.

"In the last year," Dr. Hart noted, "our club has made it a tradition to host renowned environmentalists, and Mr. Robert's presence today has been truly enlightening. We believe that by extending our club to secondary schools, we can instill a sense of environmental responsibility in the younger generation and foster a culture of sustainability."

The parley with Robert served as a reminder that protecting the environment requires a collective effort and a long-term commitment. As the club continues its mission to champion environmental causes, it is clear that the insights shared by Mr. Robert will serve as a valuable guide for their future endeavours.

Politics / ESIA For The Port Harcourt - Maiduguri Railway Commences by gannetng(m): 7:35am On Nov 20, 2020
Environmental Social and Impact Assessment (ESIA) for the Port Harcourt - Maiduguri railway commences

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) recently gave approval for the rehabilitation and construction of the existing 1443km Port Harcourt - Maiduguri narrow gauge railway and its accessories, including new branch lines from the proposed Bonny Deep Sea Port, through Onne, Elelenwo, to the proposed Industrial Park at Ubima, and finally to Owerri. Another new branch line of 216km will link Goniri to Damaturu and Gashua in Yobe State. Two new transshipment stations are proposed for Asa in Abia State and Rigachikun in Kaduna. The project will traverse about 250 communities, 71 LGAs, in 13 states.

In compliance with national and international environmental and social safeguards requirements, the Federal Ministry of Transportation through its contractor, CCECC Nigeria Limited, engaged three environmental consulting firms – PGM Nigeria Limited, Sahel Consulting Limited and Escholes Integrated Services Resources Limited to carry out the Environmental Social and Impact Assessments (ESIAs) of the proposed projects.

The Lead Environmental and Social Safeguards Consultant, Dr. Bassey Uzodinma, at the stakeholders’ engagement meeting which took place at the Bridge Water Hotel, Garden Avenue, Enugu, gave a description of the proposed project and outlined the importance of carrying out the ESIA prior to the commencement of the project, to critically assess its impacts on the soil, air, water, and other environmental components, with a view to mitigating the adverse impacts and enhancing the positive ones; and developing robust environmental and social management plans for the proposed projects.

In attendance at the stakeholders’ engagement meeting are Honourable Minister of Environment, represented by Mr. Ogar Awah, and his Transportation counterpart, represented by Engr. Bridget Damjor. Also, in attendance were the representatives of the Enugu and Ebonyi State governments, representatives of the States Ministries for Environment, Transport, Health, Gender Affairs, Information, and Urban Development. Others present were representatives of the affected communities, the Nigerian Police, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Federal Road Safety Corps, and the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Clement-Glory Foundation (an NGO), the press, among others.

Key concerns expressed at the meeting included the intention to rehabilitate the existing the narrow-gauge railway instead of standard gauge railway with catenary infrastructure, using automated rail crossings instead of overpasses and underpasses, and potential security breakdown from failure to adequately compensate current land users who will suffer physical and/or economic displacement along the railway rights-of-way.

The ESIA team departs Enugu for Benue, Nasarawa, Kaduna, Plateau, Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe, Borno, Abia, Rivers and Imo States, to continue with the engagement of relevant stakeholders, among other activities, as part of the ESIA process.

We must bequeath our culture and Traditions to the next generation. -Robert Martins Eze

The rich culture of our land is gradually being eroded by western and foreign cultures, and this must be checked urgently. This assertion was made by Robert Martins Eze during the end of the year cum new yam festival of the people of Ozuitem in Bende LGA, Abia State, residing in Abuja.

Robert Martins Eze who as the chairman of the occasion adviced the present generation not to allow the culture of History, Dance, forklore, music etc of the land to die with them but to ensure it is bequeathed to the coming generation.

He used the opportunity to thank God for sparing the lives of the members of the community in Abuja through out 2018 and pray God to continue to bless them.

Another illustrious Son of the Community Barr. Azubuko Joel Udah, Deputy Inspector General of Police (RTD) on his part charged the people to continue to be good ambassadors of Ozuitem and also urge them all to get involved politically in order to attract development to the area.

Speaking further, Sen. Mao Ohuabuwa Senator Representing the Area in the Red Chambers described Ozuitem as his second home and promised to attract more development if elected for another term.

The highlight of the event was the display of the rich cultural heritage of the Ozuitem people via cutting of yam and cultural dance led by Chief James Ijioma (Arusi)

The event was well attended by all sons and daughters of Ozuitem extraction within Abuja and neighbouring states.
