Xudur Somalia Market 1969, Nomads visit town. Guys in white are nomadic camel herders in town for market. You can tell them from the town folk by their distinctive afro hairstyles. |

Yemen was actually a colony of Ethiopia during the time before Prophet Muhammad. Its the reason why Yemen is culturally more like East Africa than the rest of the Arab world. If you go there you'll see they dress and act like Somalis rather than Arabs. Most people think this is Somalis copying Arab culture but its really the other way around. Its Yemenis that are still influenced by East African culture since they were a colony. 1 Like |

Ajuran: I dont like it. Especially onila's dangerous africanism shes pushing. Africa doesnt exist the way you people think it does. North Africa is much closer to arabia than subsaharan africa. The people in the Horn dont even view themselves as related to bantus. warya speak for yourself aniga waahaan ahaay nin Somali and have yet to meet another Somali who views themselves as anything but African and black. Plus most Somalis despise the Arabs more than anyone else. our people look like this and Arabs look like this outside of religion we got nothing else to do with them plus they are the most racist people in the world and hate black people more than anyone......and FYI they consider us black.......I can't tell you how many of my relatives have had horrible racist experiences in the Arab world 1 Like |

ayanle456: those people are somali bantus. notice the hair and face....they are not ethnically somali.... but his point still holds true because most ethnic Somalis also also dark skin here are some pics from Northern Somalia most somalis have dark skin and curly hair......the only real difference between us and bantus is we have slender rather than wide noses and less kinky hair but in the end we still have dark skin and curly hair......those are still features only found among black people in Africa and we still look more like black people than any other race |

yousuf12: Read the blurb below the first picture. Somalis used butter in their hair in the past. Afar are probably the closest to the Somali along with the Borana Oromo when it comes to culture. And if you look at the ONLF fighters, alot of them wear their hair in locks moreso than other Somalis. There are a number of old school pictures of Somalis wearing their hear in locks like the Afar. Just look at this. |

All of these pictures are either of the Somali and Afar. Shows a range of traditional hairstyles used be men, women, and children. First up the classic Afro. Can never really go wrong with this. Next curled locks. Very popular among the Afar and Ogaden Somali. Can't forget about the women. Surprising women only have their hair braided. In East Africa, hair grooming is more of a male activity. axum: You wish. At least let me know what tribe you are? And where do you live? I'm gonna guess you are Isaaq and live in Kenya or Uganda. I guessed Isaaq because you guys are the least loyal to Somalinimo and the most racist among Somali tribes. And I'm gonna guess you live in either Kenya/Uganda where you get picked on by Bantu kids so you use the internet to vent. I'm just a Somali who luckily didn't grow up around other Somalis, so I'm immune from the ignorance that comes from people like you. I got no reason to troll a Nigerian website to make myself feel better. |
Culture / Re: Are Cushitic People The Standards Of Beauty? by Garaad: 11:31pm On Oct 25, 2013 |
axum: somali society looks down on bantus, and one cannot be somali unless their parents are somali. As smallness is determined by clan affiliation since we are all one tribe or ethnicity. warya.....stop with the lies....unlike u who posts pictures of one or two Somalis......these are pictures from several northern Somali towns (wher there are no native Bantus)......if you think 80% Somalis have brown skin......then that isn't saying much since apparently most Africans have brown skin under your definition of brown 90% of Somalis have jet black or dark brown skin. Light skin is rare and the only reason some families have light skin members is because our ancestors (the original DARK SKIN Somalis) mixed with the lighter skin coastal populations that descended from Arabs/Persians/Indian traders. These populations still exists although in smaller numbers. That is the reason why you can have light skin members in a family where most are dark skin. The same phenomenon is present in African Americans families because of mixing with whites in the past. Stop acting like there is anything special about Somali skin tones. Its the same as any African country except maybe South Sudan where they got extra black skin. 1 Like |

EnlightenedSoul: Garaad is similar to boqor/king. Its a name given to the chief of the Dhulbahante clan. Kinda like a royal designation. So many of the Dhulbahante tribal chiefs have names like Garaad Heebel this Garaad Heebel that. Here is the current Garaad of the Dhulbahante clan (Garaad Jamaac Garaad Ali). |
Culture / Re: Somali Proverbs by Garaad: 10:48pm On Oct 25, 2013 |
axum: Doesn't Somali culture also denigrate other Somali tribes? Your acting like Somalis are hateful only toward other Africans as if its some unique feature. Somali culture by in large involves denigration of everyone and everything except Islam and the Prophet Muhammad. Other than that everyone is fair game. Somalis denigrate other ethnic Somalis like the Midgaan. Somalis denigrate the Habesha (aka Ethiopians). Somalis denigrate the Arabs (daag caas). Etc. Somali culture is moronic on many fronts. Not just racism against other Africans. But tribalism and xenophobia. The worst insults go not at the Bantu or Habesha but other Somali tribes. As Darood, I hear more insults hurled at the Hawiye and Isaaq than any Bantu/adoon in my life. |

Zairois: Wow a non ignorant Somali guy. For most non-Somalis it might seem weird but unfortunately Somali culture breeds this level of ignorance and stupidity. Remember we are the only country in Africa in which 99% of the people speak the same language, 99% have the same religion, and 90% are the same ethnicity, yet we live in anarchy, have famines that no other modern country does, and live under the threat of terrorism and piracy. If the Nigerian brothas and sistas here think its bad the way some Somalis think about other Africans. You don't want to know what we say about one another. The amount of ethnic vitriol among tribes who look indistinguishable from one another is 10x worse than anything Somalis have to say about any other Africans. Our entire culture is based on hating each other and fighting about stupid shit. Its the by product of living in a harsh environment for hundreds of years and having only your close family to depend on while being attacked at any moment by other tribes. |

axum: There is a difference between being Somali and being an ethnic Somali. I don't doubt the girl could be Somali. The bantu in Somalia are also Somali. So are the reer xamar and barwani. However, they are NOT ethnic Somali. And that is all my post was about. Ethnic Somalis don't look like her. And if she actually is part of the main Somali tribes, then she's obviously has alot of non-Somali heritage since I've never seen an ethnic Somali that looks like her. Most of our people look like this. And for those wondering all the pictures are from northern Somalia (mainly the town of Buuhoodle which is inhabited by the Dhulbahante clan which is a sub-clan of the most dominant clan in Somalia the Darood). Unlike some of ya'll here who are cherry picking which pics to post, I'm simply posting pictures of large groups of people in Somalia. No cherry picking or trying to find a certain person. I'm simply posting a picture of large groups of people that are congregating in a normal Somali town to show how the vast majority of our people look. We can argue semantics all day but no matter what most Somalis have dark skin. Very dark skin. And if you want to say that the color of most of these people is brown instead of black then so be it. All I know is that the girl he posted would stick out among these people. And if she would stick out. Then how can he claim she represents us? |

Ajuran: warya ajnabika been aa uu sheekin Is there a reason you chose not to post the last REAL president of Somalia? The great Siad Barre. Seeing as how you are obviously Hawiye (screen name Ajuran) I'm surprised you wouldn't want to post a picture of the President before last....Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed.....from YOUR tribe Is he a little too black for you? Are his lips to full? And nose too wide? I bet this clown looks just like him. I've noticed among Somalis that the ones who hate being considered black are usually the blackest and most negroid of us. Most light skin Somalis don't have this issue. Its the dark skin self-haters like this guy Ajuran that seem to have a problem with how most of our people look. And for the non-Somalis out there. Both these guys are from the two largest tribes in Somalia. The Darood and Hawiye. More than 50% of all Somalis belong to one of these two tribes and its the reason they have traded the spot of President the last 50 years. while he cherry picks pictures of some Somalis who have obvious non-African admixture. I choose instead to post pictures of what the vast majority of Somalis look like. And that is this: 2 Likes |

somalia11: miss nigeria vs miss somalia warya at least post gaabad Somali instead of this obvious barwani chick to the non-Somalis out there......FYI the woman he posted is definitely not an ethnic Somali.....there are a number of non-ethnic Somali communities that have lived in Somalia for hundreds of years and have mixed with us.....they mostly live near the coast in cities like Mogadishu and that are made up of descendants of Arab/Indian/Persian traders......we absorbed some of them into our tribes......hence the reason that there are light skin wavy hair Somalis who are part of the major tribes they are however not representative of most of our people here are some pics of members of my tribe.....the Dhulbahante.....we live in northern Somalia away from the coasts.....so there was less mixing with outsiders don't let this clown color your opinion of most Somalis.....whether he likes it or not most of the people from this tribe are black |
