Dubious, dodgy, olodos in just one post. Haba, on to say people come study for UK? Nobody deserves all these demeaning name calling, except you have personal vendetta against them or you can prove they are here illegally.

But then, I'm not surprised, because even Emily Carver earlier in the week couldn't but look stupid after being confronted with facts. In her attempt to defend the policy, she had said on national TV that international are coming with their "grannies".

Even on these forum, I've seen someone said they're coming with their entire village. Really?

What comments like yours and those other ones show is that many people only read headlines and are too sentimental.

If I may remind you, no international student has stayed beyond their studies without the government's approval. No international student can have a Visa without the government issuing CAS to them. And same goes for their dependents.

So, if you think their degrees are dubious, they're olodos, and are dodgy and migrating through backdoor, perhaps your anger should be directed to the govt who implemented those Visa rules, accredited those courses and gave continuous stay to foreign students and their dependents after the completion of their studies.

Well clearly, the govt is doing something about it. You and ur Ilk are the ones crying about the change in policy. I have explained why I see nothing wrong with it. I don’t understand why genuine Nigerian students in the UK should be tarnished by those who have other agendas.

Olodos, dubious etc… didn’t call anyone these but if the shoe fits, wear it well.

I find many of your statements those of self hate, ignorant and insulting.

Some facts-

1. Brilliance is not a function of age

2. Educational attainments e.g college, masters e.t.c is what we all engage in to better ourselves and encounter better opportunities.

3. Being a student is not a function of age or a function of the size of ones family

4. As a Nigerian, I don't see a hierarchy of my countrymen consisting of those who are 'suitable' for the UK and those less suitable and fit to remain in Nigeria. If the UK is able to scrape our your young and bright doctors, then there is certainly room for masters students and their families.

5. The UK needs much of immigration more the immigrants need the UK.

6. By most studies released, the UK economy is a significant bet beneficiary of the masters system as currently structured and even immigration as a whole.

Just like the pillaging of Africa over centuries, on this, the UK gets the better deal by a long stretch. I will not further that by creating a caste system and sorting which Nigerians are 'worthy' enough to be in the UK.

1. Never said it was. I just used 'brilliance' as a descriptor of many young Nigerian students in the UK of which there are.

2. But realistically, a mature man or woman who has already lived a good proportion of this life deciding to sell everything to move to a different country on a student visa for a dubious master's degree on the chance of settling permanently is only setting themselves up for a fall and a life of complaining about how they were 'tricked' into coming.

3. Disagree. The younger brain is more adaptable to learning. Most traditional undergrad students are also aged 18-25 unmarried with no dependents..a reason why most universities only offer single dwellings for their students and not family homes. Masters degree students on average are aged about 30.

4. You are conflating issues. The discussion is about student visas and not any other immigration visa. If one chooses to immigrate then they should use the right visa to do so. Don't try to have a party in a bucket...in short don't into the UK on the restrictive student visa with 5 dependents, no funds and then complain when you are not allowed to work more than 20 hours a week to support said family.

5. Is that so? Then why the outcry over the ban on dependents for student visas? The Other visas are not impacted so why can't Nigerians just use the correct visa to enter the country with their dependents? The fact that people are crying over this and calling for the head of Emdee over what he said just shows who needs who.

6. No cast system here. I see no reason why the UK Government should risk the reputation of their educational establishments and world university rankings by just allowing all sorts of olodos to use the student visa route to enter the UK when it is clear that such people have another agenda.

As I said, there have seen many and are still many many brilliant intelligent Nigerian students regardless of background...fresh from Nigeria in studying places like Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, Imperial etc doing great things getting distinctions and first class honours in worthwhile high value degress which will yield high paying jobs.

This is typical of the Nigerian student worthy of a UK student visa and it has always been the case since time immemorial.

This new influx of dodgy Nigerian students with their countless of dependents and who are clearly using the system as a back door are not the type I will ever support sorry.

I have been avoiding this conversation but...

The nursery, schools, NHS, etc. are funded by the Tax paid by workers (dependents, citizens, etc) so it's not necessarily a free meal. These guys are working really hard and paying their Taxes legally.

It depends..Dependents don't pay council tax

Income tax is dependent on how much you earn.

Someone earning £25k a year is only going to pay around £4500 in income tax and National Insurance. £4500 is not enough to cover the place of a primiary school child so an sponsor /dependent with school aged children who has only been in the country for a year shouldn't be so loud with "I paid for this" because they haven't really been here long enough to make a significant contribution.

My thing is most are acting like they are actualling physically bringing money into the country when they aren't. They are working in the UK and the money they earn, they use to pay taxes which is a legal obligation.

UK govt cannot have their cake and eat it. Students coming in pay fees, they pay IHS, they have no recourse to public funds. They inject so much hard cash into the system at once. What is the government and their systems doing with all that funds?
All that money should have been invested into improving all these services you talked about. Nothing like that was done, so you can't blame legal immigrants for the problems.
Let them change the rules like they did pre-PBS, Nigerians will switch to other locations, the UK will still be worse off at the end of the day.

No recourse to public funds has become a bit of a misnomer, when Students are allowed to bring in 4-5 dependents including school age children.

As education is free for all children regardless of immigration status, the UK government spends at least £5500 per child in school..the child will have access to free books, sports facilities and other amenities. Technically, these are public funds which International students use.
International Students also do not pay income or council tax and their partners pay no council tax either but they are entitled to the services that council tax pays for such as bin collection, street lighting, roads sweeping etc.

Exactly 💯

Undergraduates are not allowed dependents and they study for 3-4 years. They make up more than half of the overseas student population and pay tens of thousands of pounds over the duration of their course, so why is no one advocating for them to be able to bring in dependents if they wish to?I had some mature students (as they were called) on my degree course who had families, so it's not only postgrads that have families.

Students are still very welcome, all the govt is saying is that they do not have the resources to accommodate the hundreds of thousands of dependents that are now coming along.

The policy is strategically aimed at those who come in for a 1 year Masters course. The Master's option is the route that is being abused most as universities allow payments in installments..so very easy for some to pay part of the course and then come in to the UK to work to pay off the rest or simply pay to switch their visas.

Undergraduates will not be impacted because most times that are aged between 19-25 and are single with no dependents. As mentioned above most of these undergraduates come in as genuine students, real proof of funds with their fees already paid. I see plenty of these Nigerian students in Central London at University of London, Birkbeck College which is near my gym and office

As I said lets encourage the genuine students and not some of these 40-50 year old papas and mamas with full families who are giving Nigerians a bad name by using student visas for "Masters' to enter the Uk when their intentions are not genuine.

The work visa is there for those types to use but because most have no skill and unable to acquire such. However they prefer to use the student visa route and then complain about not having enough hours to pay for their course and make a living because the "UK is not good". or the "UK is bad" or "They used us" ..when they know good and well that not only could they not find work in Nigeria because of the same lack of employable skills and they also used ojoro to show fake proof of funds in their account to get the student visa.

The UK can tighten its laws in whatever they like but to demonise people using the education route to migrate is a joke. All over the world, people use the education route to migrate especially if they are highly skilled. If the Uk wants to be sincere, they should give us the data of dependents that now have high-skill jobs and it will be shocking what the data will reveal.

The conservatives are desperate to remain in power and I don't have a problem with that but to continue to profile Nigerians deliberately is hypocritical, yes our people are foolish but for the sake of many hardworking Nigerians especially the highly skilled ones, we don't deserve all these insults.

I don't believe Nigerians has been targeted as the manifesto clearly stated "International" students. Nigerians are clearly triggered because we are honest a good majority of students are not highly skilled.

Yes there are many brilliant intelligent bright stars from Nigeria in the UK.

However, most of them are solo, aged around 20-30 and are ready to explore what life has to offer. However those packing up shop in Nigeria, selling houses and looking to immigrate to the UK when they are already close to 40 with their entire families are not genuine students. There is no way such people who have already lived a life, embark on a serious course of study worthy of professional employment..1.age is not on their side and they will be competing with younger proactive graduates who are ready to take on the world and 2. Before they use time to gain experience, they will be close to retirement age...lets be honest.

Such people should just apply for standard work visas where they may be allowed to bring family and stop using the student visa as a ploy to enter in UK...or just stay in Nigeria and make lemonade out of lemons.

This new policy will attract the best, the brightest intelligent academic students from Nigeria. As mentioned, there are many of these genuine Nigerian students here who come in with real proof of funds so that they do not spend time worrying about only 20 hours a week work and more time being a full time student. These are the Nigerians we should be highlighting, encouraging and supporting and not the ones who we all know are taking the p.

majority of prospective students from Nigeria are approaching 40 and wants to travel with their family. This is exactly why they will look at other countries.... The arrangement use to be a win win for both parties, if the UK decided to change it overnight, i ttust my people to look elsewhere.

Btw it is those (atleast a large number of them) who are approaching 40 that can afford this study route because atleast one (if not both) of the couples must have been working for years and must have saved some reasonable amout of money

There are lots of young promising brilliant Nigerian students in the UK studying valuable courses like Cyber Security, Data, Software engineering and finance etc. These students are aged 20-30, come solo and are serious about studying. These are the people the UK want to encourage.

Not the ones who wake up at 40, after marriage and kids, sell all their possessions and decide they want to do MSc in Flower arranging or Social SCiences and want to pack all of their family to the UK. Yes those types should go elsewhere as the UK only wants serious students who will be a credit to the institution they attend and not the ones who will drop out after a term to switch their Tier 4 visas.

Your attachment is an analysis spanning btw 2019-2022. Can't you see it clearly Nigeria comes a distant second to India??

Because we are still in 2023 and there is incomplete data for this year.

You misunderstood the graph obviously or you no sabi read?

Figure 3 shows that Nigeria had the highest number of dependants (60,923) of sponsored study visa holders in 2022, increasing from 1,586 in 2019. Indian nationals had the second highest number of dependants, increasing from 3,135 to 38,990. There were almost 120,000 dependant visas granted to the top 5 nationalities (Nigeria, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka) in 2022.

When looking at the proportional change in visa grants to dependants, by nationality, Nigeria saw a large increase in the proportion of sponsored study related visas granted to dependants, from 19% in 2019, to 51% in 2022. Indian nationals also saw an increase in the proportion of dependants, from 8% to 22%.

Outside of the top 5 nationalities, the increase in proportion was more modest (from 4% to 6%).

I'll say this again. Genuine students are not approaching 40 sell everything in their home land and move with 4-5 family members to another country.
Those who genuinely want to study at a UK unversity which are among the best in the world will still come solo. The Indians and Chinese students aren't crying about this new change in policy even though they make up the majoirty of international students because most of them come solo.

Some young ladies dress skimpily to draw attention to themselves and nothing more.

She was trying to get her name into the Guiness World record books which is an internationally recognised factbook which lists high achievements.

Being a Guinness World Record holder does not have any monetary benefits, but it may have some other benefits such as: Recognition: The Guinness World Record certificate is accepted globally and the holders of this certificate are known all around the world

Hilda has since been featured on CNN, BBC and in other foreign press. It is all about leveraging this new found fame to game more sponsorships, high profile jobs etc.

If I were her manager I would be pitching a shows like Nigerian Masterchef, Nigeria's Best Baker, Nigeria Kitchen Nightmares, The Great Nigerian Bake off, Iron Chef Nigeria (All soin-offs from already internationally recognised shows) with her as a Presenter.

Now everyone knows her name she could even start a ready meals company distributed globally...like if I see Hilda Baci Suya rice or Okra Soup in my local Sainsburys in London, I no go buy? of course!

Anyway, the world is her oyster and the possibilities are numerous. She just needs to pay her cards right and leverage her new found fame with sense.

I don't understand how we think sometimes, why are we making this too much of a big deal? Hilda baci did an amazing job no doubt... She got her message out there too.. she showed the world that there are still positive things about Nigeria, She showed the world the Naija vibes and how supportive Nigerians can be. So we are proud of her... I'm personally proud of her.

But guys please stop overreacting. I don't know exactly what you guys think she did.

Na only cook she cook it's not like she just discovered the cure for cancer!

Mek we just dey calm down a

Yeah she did well. But I do feel she could have even done better by highlighting a worth cause like a charity for domestic violence, homelessness or orphanages etc. She also could have invited children from impoverished communities to come and eat for free..probably would have set another world record for cooking and feeding the most children in one sitting...She try sha.

Was there any arrangement for this
would he get this lifelong treatment? As required by UK law and did the Ekweremadu enter an agreement to pay for that? Or were they going to use and dump him
Let m me make one thing clear the UK WERE NEVER going to let him remain in their country and pay for lifetime healthcare. He would have to return to Nigeria.
The doctor who interviewed was right to judge that he had no means to look after himself if he returned to Nigeria with one kidney. That should highlight to you the wickedness of the whole enterprise
Was he told that if his other kidney fails he too might need a transplant?
I don't know and it is wrong to judge without hearing him

Reading some of the comments from some Nigerians really made me think that some of us indeed lack critical thinking skills...all thise "he agreed", "he gave his consent", 'He was not forced" as if they are talking about someone agreeing to borrow another a pair of shoes and not a critical body organ of which the lack of could reduce the quality of life or end it completely. I tire.

I just hope this case also serves to educate Nigerians about organ donation, the restrictions and the consequences and health implications that are involved as well as world of human trafficking for the purpose of illegally procuring organs for the rich.
